Parker Hitt and American Cryptology in WWI
Between 1914-1917, communications technology, and the way to secure or intercept this kind of traffic, progressed dramatically. When the United States entered WWI in April 1917, it had to quickly catch up in these areas. Remarkably, the Americans made considerable progress by 1918. This success was partly due to Parker Hitt, an innovative Army officer who designed modifications for machine guns but truly excelled at cryptology and at bridging the divide between civilian industry and the Army. To discuss the contributions of Parker Hitt, the World War I Podcast hosted Betsy Rohaly Smoot, author of Parker Hitt: The Father of American Military Cryptology.

When the United States declared war in April 1917, it was unprepared to actually fight a war in Europe. The regular army was small and American industry needed time to produce war materials on a massive scale. It also needed time to train and transport troops. States would play an important role in mobilization - both in terms of manpower and in terms of the resources and industry. The 48 state...
Jack Downey's Cold War

On November 29, 1952, a 22-year-old CIA operative named Jack Downey was shot down over China while taking part in an air drop. Four successive Administrations refused to acknowledge his connection to the CIA. Without this acknowledgement, Downey spent 21 years as a POW - the longest-held POW in American history. His treatment in prison was largely dictated by the events of the Korean War and th...
Hitler's World War I Service

Like many leaders during WWII, Adolf Hitler served in World War I. It was an important part of his identity, and, prior to his rise to power in Germany, he even went to court to defend his service record. His detractors claimed he was a “rear area hog.” They argued he had dodged service in the Austro-Hungarian army and then spent WWI in the German army in the relative safety of his regimental H...

Agent of the Iron Cross

In 1918, German secret agent, Lothar Witzke, entered the United States via the southern border. His mission was to conduct a campaign of terror and sabotage. This included the destruction of American factories making war materials, the assassination of American officials, and fomenting racial unrest. To explore this little-known chapter in WWI history, the World War I Podcast hosted Bill Mills,...
Tenth Army Commander

On June 18, 1945, one month shy of his 59th birthday, Lieutenant General Simon Bolivar Buckner Jr. became the most senior US military officer to be killed by enemy fire in World War II. At the time, he was leading the Tenth Army on Okinawa. Buckner kept a diary from January 1, 1944, to June 17, 1945. That diary has only recently been fully published. It is an important addition to our understan...

Environmental Impact of World War I on North Sea Fishing
Переглядів 1773 місяці тому
The North Sea was one of the most relevant naval theatres of the war. It was also home to important fishing grounds. By 1914 a combination of technology, markets, and demand was leading to overfishing in the region. World War I reversed this, but it was a temporary respite. To discuss the short- and long-term impact of World War I on the North Sea, the World War I Podcast hosted Dr. Ingo Heidbr...

The Occupation of Japan after World War II is often considered a masterclass in civil affairs. It was not perfect, but it was successful. General Douglas MacArthur’s primary mission was to demilitarize Japan. Before he even arrived in Japan however, he was convinced that a sustainable peace would require significant legal and social changes - particularly in terms of the status of Japanese wome...

11th Airborne: Angels Against the Sun
Going back for many decades, leftists have attacked the use of the atomic bombs as being unnecessary and immoral for all kinds of reasons. The Japanese were on the verge of surrendering anyway, it was primarily a demonstration against the Soviet Union, a blockade would have produced a surrender and many other claims, many addressed in the questions of the video. This is of a piece with what leftists ALWAYS do in my experience. They imagine their theories based on no or very little evidence ---and ANY theory is worth advancing if it attacks the United States. And when they are eventually proven wrong they NEVER admit they were wrong or, heaven forfend, say, "I'm sorry" for the calumnies they disperse as widely as possible, And the news media joyfully repeats these calumnies ad infinitum.
So like his MOH and LBJ’s silver star , participation trophies for flag officers
MacArthur was a coward . He abandoned his men
United States Presidential Candidates in WH including Waltz = related
Uncle Himmler
Cousin Adolf Hitler
Uncle Erwin Rommel
Uncle George S. Patton
Uncle Douglas MacArthur, Sir.
I'm a 3 star general, so 1/2 way to 6 stars
MacArthur knew about the Lizzid people, you see.
MacArthur a megalomaniacal and egomaniacal overrated General. Against President Hoover’s wishes he crushed the bonus Army with his troops a very unpopular move which blackened Hoover’s presidency. He was totally unprepared in the Japanese Invasion of the Philippines, constantly in contention with Admiral Nimitz in the Pacific theater. ignored intelligence that said China was about to invade across the Yalu River and played the victim when he ignored his Commander in Chief’s (Harry Truman) orders and was fired. He then played the victim. Hopefully he will get his just due for being an all around bad general that he so much deserves.
A lot of this is untrue. Watch the other videos by this great channel.
Second and I wonder if you can do a response to "Why General MacArthur Is Overrated ft. The Fat Electrician | Unsubscribe Clips" not to praise him but correct the errors made. A lot of people watch that and it may be useful to debunk the myths about his command.
They have already done a great job debunking all the lies about MacArthur. Why should they have to do a direct reply to that basement dweller? And why are you obsessed with negative hate videos against MacArthur? The Left are obsessed with glorifying Truman. MacArthur is their scapegoat for everything.
Why don't you do it? You seem to be pro-MacArthur and can use the resources given by Amanda and Jim throughout many years (decades even). The MacArthur Memorial defended MacArthur recently against slander regarding the age of Isobel Cooper, his Filipina girlfriend. Some West Point alumni were trying to "cancel" MacArthur until the Memorial proved with evidence that Cooper was 18 years old when she and Mac first met.
@@nogoodnameleft I am Pro-MacArthur but I am not a rabid fanatic (In the sense I recognise his flaws.). He made mistakes however the video is putting out lies which have been debunked almost 50 years ago. It is also absurd in it's interpretation as everyone believes that obeying orders is wrong and that the best thing soldiers do is disobey them. They also compare his handling of the Bonus Marchers in 1932 as if it was comparable to no no Germany. This does not even make sense to me!
@@johnnotrealname8168 Fair enough and well said. You have to realize that that garbage video and the other anti-Mac videos have such extreme anti-Mac people who upload those videos that they DELETE all pro-Mac comments and replies in order to artificially make it look like there are hundreds or thousands of comments and make it look like they all 100% hate MacArthur, which is ridiculous. I commented numerous times on those videos and my comments always get removed and I know there are a bunch of Americans, Filipinos, Japanese, and South Koreans who strongly defend him but, nope, the owners of those videos wipe clean all comments from MacArthur fans. I also believe that most of those comments are bots and not even real humans writing them. They all seem to miraculously have an uncle or grandfather who "served directly under Mac" and saw the "horrible things" that Mac did with their own eyes. Yeah...so believable (rolling eyes). When you become a great person of historical significance you end up sadly having to make enemies out of a lot of different types of people. Look at all the other famous Americans. They trigger such extreme vitriol against them from a certain small minority of the population. Those angry comments on UA-cam videos make up maybe 1% of the population. Most people either don't care about history or like MacArthur. The USMC has never forgiven MacArthur for rejecting USMC ground forces to be used in the liberation of both New Guinea island and the whole Philippines. The very fact that they keep screaming about how much they hate MacArthur means that most people still like him and they are angry that not everybody agrees with them. They are simply jealous and bitter that their favorite military servicemember does/did not have the same legendary resume as MacArthur.
Airborne All The Way 2/504 82nd Airborne Division Veteran!!!🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸💪
Shame MacArthur couldn't get Patton a position in the Pacific theater of WWII. The Japanese called MacArthur Gaijin Shogun (Foreign Generalissimo), imagine if Blood and Guts was leading his men taking Iwo Jima, Okinawa before setting foot on Tokyo.
Congratulations to 2 of my favorite people at the MacArthur Memorial!!! Great video!
Congratulations to you both! And a fine and facinating presentation (as usual)! Thank you both!
General Douglas MacArthur could have been President of the USA if he had wanted to but he did not. He was that popular. We got Eisenhower instead but OK.
One day it would be fitting to give the Australians some credit in these battles ,it was the Australians after heavy casualties stop then turned back the Japanese on the kokoda track ,the us air support was vital in the battles back over the mountains it was the only way to get supplied, also it must be said the troops Australian militia were untrained in combat and suffered terribly the us troops from the national guards were also not combat troops anyway as i said the Aussies deserve a fair go in these histories.

These days, the best way for that to happen is via movies. BUT don't look to Hollywood for help. The reason is Hollywood's #1 rule: Will the movie be PROFITABLE IN CHINA? You have to understand that MacArthur is a villain in Chinese history and portraying him positively is not allowed. Therefore, Hollywood won't won't go there. (I know people in Hollywood). So the solution is to make independently produced movies about it.
Congratulations to both of you❤ your both really good at what you do, I hope it continues 🙈
Congratulations to both of you!
Truman was right to fire MacArthur. His insubordination and attempts to divide the government were horrific.
MacArthur abandoned his men in the Philippines
HELL TO BREAKFAST !
Fascinating!
my father was in the army in the korean war. all this bs about who's to blame for the chinese coming in. that war was planned in moscow. stalin was behind everything that happened in that war. boris yeltsin released all those soviet records in the 1990's. so who's to blame? the communists they were all in it together thats who.
all nuclear weapons during the korean war were in okinawa and could only be used on direct orders of the president whether it was truman and then eisenhower. okinawa was not under macarthur's command.
what are the facts here. first congress promised the bonus and congress in reality reneged. the president ordered macarthur and the army to clear the bonus army shanty town out. macarthur followed orders of the president. end of story. blame congress they sucked then and their even worse now.
Like her husband, Jean, with her unwavering support, was also a hero.
Hi there James and Samantha many thanks, keep it going!
it only shows that Gen MacArthur is not a Politician he is a man of words and actions. My family and I were a true fan of the General. Thank you for the freedom that we’ve enjoyed today.
I had no idea, so interesting, thank you
A side light to his story is how a dedicated employee at CIA headquarters looked out for Downey and Fecteau's future after release. He made sure that they received generous and regular raises. Their accrued wages grew in special CIA investment funds (the kind that benefited from all of the inside information that the CIA could gather). Upon Downey's return he also saw to it that Downey was credited with all of his missed vacations so that he could cruise into retirement. Downey then went to Harvard Law School. After that the State of Connecticut took over. The state made sure that Downey had responsible legal jobs. After 10 years of practicing law for the State, he was appointed a judge, a position he held for the rest of his life.
Judge Downey became a learned and respected jurist. He was unfailingly courteous to counsel and litigants. He spent much of his judicial career dealing with the legal problems of the young, with great patience and understanding. The New Haven juvenile courthouse is named after him. He is buried a few dozen yards from Choate.
What would General MacArthur make of Donald J Trump?
Great job Amanda
Well done as usual!
Thank you appearing in person, it’s so much more interesting. Well done and thank you😊
thank you for lettings us know where you got that shirt from! lol
Halsey stated that when Rear Adm. Robert B. Carney, his chief of staff, was asked by King, "Do you want to make a London out of Manila?" Carney replied, "No, sir. I want to make an England out of Luzon.
Thank you both for yet another excellent, informative presentation. 🤗
Thank you for such a great and informative presentation. Maybe this will clear up some of the misconceptions, especially with the Navy.
Hey maybe get In touch with me, my grandfather took a picture on one of those days…
and the marines? is there a 5 star ranking too?
Thank you so much for this beautiful video! My grandfather proudly served abort this ship. Charles R Conrad, Baker third class. He would tell us stories when we were young boys about some of his experiences on the Nashville. I remember one particular story where he told us about watching the bombers launch off of the USS hornet. He would tell us how choppy the Pacific was that day and how they watched them time the launches of the bombers with the waves as they would come off of the deck of the hornet. He was also on board for the Kamikaze attack. Thankfully he survived it and was not injured. The story he told us matches your description to a t. Again, I can't thank you enough for doing this video. You have no idea what it means to me. I have some pictures of his in a photo album in the basement from his time on the ship, and a journal that he kept. I also have several souvenirs that he purchased when they were on Liberty in Australia. I would love to visit your museum someday!
Whoopee cushions had printing that included “Bronx cheer”. Mad Magazine may have also referred to it.
Why you omit general pattern alsofive star general
To paraphrase if I may. It was common knowledge that the US would end up in Europe at some point. Although the Allis, England would always keep their interests in mind, always has and always will thats why they are a happy country. Rosevelt said step back church those are my tanks, planes and shells, there is no way any of my boy's would salute Montey. Church said yes, he is real pain and does march to his own drums, and is not the second coming like he thinks he is IE. Market Garden. Ike was the man for the job. The other guys had more combat experience. They were like a beagle on a rabbit, their job was to kill, and kill and they did it well, but had blinders on. Ike was a great pentagon Gen and he could see the big picture, as he was not tied down with his own ARMY. I swear Mccarther and Patton were like energizer bunnies. They would have kept going meeting in Moscow take a break then talk about how to best cleanup the reds in China.
Im a filipino, so you know how much we admire macarthur and consider him a national hero.
I lived on Leyte for over a year. In more than one home, I saw a photo or other image of MacArthur on the wall right next to the alter displaying a nativity scene.
@@warrenmatha3424 looking past how he fairly treated the filipinos during his assignment here in the philippines, the most impressive was how he managed the occupation of japan. While the allies fumbled with Germany, Mcarthur kept the allies out of japan and managed the recovery of the country putting into practice what he and his father learned of their tour of the country and asia earlier in the century. Japan and US were mortal enemies during the war but became strong allies after.
