They used 2 beleive before the big budgets crushed everyone at the mellenium turn. 161 laps was a chance weather or not you had grid 33 or grid 3. The key was to script a finish.
Bathurst 1999 my ex wife and i were there! Trackside on pit straight. Seeing the race on TV is one thing but to actually be there is something else! We went up on top of the mountain on a practise day, you do not realize watching it on TV they are probably doing 200kph+++ across the top of the mountain. Car 18 DJR Ford Falcon was Fast all weekend, you could hear when it went past that thing REALLY wanted to GO! It led a good part of the race, about 10 laps before the end Radisdich car 18 leading, then a front tire let go going up mountain straight ( heading back up the mountain ) next we see Paul on the side of the track, feeding the horses in the paddock, FUCK MAN I WAS GUTTED!!!! ( Greg Murphy Kmart Commodore won ) Yes i am a Ford fan, always liked DJR! AWESOME trip! We had a rental car a Ford Falcon Forte, base model, but hey it was alright, we stayed at Lithgow, i think ALL the hotels/motels were all Bathurst goers! We tried Fish and Chips one night, they were BLOODY AWEFUL! Straight in the bin for them. We got the rental car back without a mark on it, given driving in a strange country ( ie not where i am used to ) i was quite proud to return the car in the same condition as when we started.
@@RunningOn7CylindersYT Super2 could possibly work, but Super3 would never happen since they were built to different regulations. They'd never be deemed safe enough.
Skaife hasn't aged much either, nor has lowndesy. Mark Skaife is in his early 50s I believe and still looks like a champion. Craig Lowndes is the same. He'd only be in his mid 40s perhaps or a bit younger. Steven Richards would probably be in the same age group as Craig Lowndes. Both still look great for their age. Craig Lowndes is pretty well retired from full time driving although he still does drives at the Bathurst 1000. He also competed in this year's Bathurst 12 hour. He's also now an ambassador of the Australian Road Safety Foundation.
This was the year the Shell Fords were untouchable in a straight line. But the gods of Mt Panorama don't give a toss about who has the fastest car in any given year. As they say, that's motor racing.
Yes, especially car 18, i was there at the track watching live in 1999, it was like thunder when car 18 came by, it was quick, very quick, less than 10 laps from finish car 18 leading, tire blew, race OVER, man i was GUTTED!! Murphy won.
THe Shell car should have won this year, like always though Holden get all the luck at Bathurst even though they are not the fastest car most of the time.
I agree I remember this bathurst very well those shell cars were way quicker than any other car buy a mile would have loved to see dick jhonson win this year he drove brilliantly that day he wasn't a well man in 99 he had alot of health problems for a bloke of 54 years young drove brilliantly this is coming from a holden fan and peter brock fan
mark brock Seems like you have 1 eyed opinion on that point you made, i have a more honest opinion as far as the luck thing goes in what your claiming, i'd like to think the luck factor is more like 50.50, and a little ''sour grapes' on your part. if you go back to the very first bathurst 1000 you would know that. Peace
These big grids were terrific. 'Unsafe' be damned, they need to let the support category cars drive in the main event again instead of giving them they're own race on the Saturday. For the moaning drivers in the main game who like to run up the arse of these fellas whilst 'coming through the field' we need to reinforce the FACT that no matter how fast you are the objective should be to go AROUND the cars in front of you..........
Yes. Agree. Even mark oastler had a great voice. Can't quite top Barry Sheen's voice. I remember an incident at the Clipsal Adelaide 500 (I think) I saw on tv where a wheel had dislodged itself from one of the cars and was bouncing around the place and ended up landing in top of the tyre bundle as if it was meant to be there, even so it pretty well made itself a part of the tyre bundle. Barry Sheen was one of the commentators and maybe mark oastler was commentating as well. They both commentated as it happened and when the tyre landed atop the tyre bundle, mark oastler said something along the lines of "that's a perfect landing" or "a perfect ten" and then they both laughed about it and then the replay was shown and Barry Sheen then said "that's what you call a control tyre"! Couldn't help but laugh at the whole thing. V8 supercars had not long started racing at that track at that time.
Didgeree Media, I have a USB stick that I plug into my DVR. And I record these episodes on TV here in Australia. RPM is a show on Network Ten that is about Motorsport news and previews. In this episode they showcased past Bathurst races in a highlights reel.
Because it's no longer a battle of manufacturers, but a battle of drivers. There's no advantages, just pure skill. In my opinion, that makes for some of the best racing in the world.
So glad I’ve found the highlights of the 1999 race , I was there at Bathurst that day , the sound of 55 V8 super cars was awesome
Shame we don't have privateers anymore in the sport.
Watching 55 SuperCars driving Bathurst all at once looks crazy. We only have 26 cars in 2018, 1999 was DOUBLE the size of the grid!

Just meet him yesterday he's a mad lad
We miss you Barry Sheen
What happened to Barry Sheen? Sounds like he was a good commentator.
Imagine 55 v8 supercars in 2018
Broady Taylor shame there isn’t enough current spec cars (counting the Super2’s) to make a 55 car field 😔

That Wynn's car probably what got me into Supercars that year, that and Gran Turismo.
Wow, working of both team cars at the same time in the pits, each with their own little bays. What a busy pit lane.
I really wish this never stopped . Today's Supercars are crap,in comparison .
Best Bathurst Ever. And the best V8 Supercars race ever.
That run by Lowndes at the start is sublime. Perfect example of how to capitalise on a chance...
"We're hearing reports now the car is on fire" "No worries" 😂
The flames on the monitors aren't sufficient evidence apparently, the commentators must wait for a 'report'.
Ritcho just won this years great race with Lowndes, and he looks exactly the same lol

Wow, the Wynns car certainly had a different exhaust note to it. Broken header or was that just the sound?
10 times the excitement of a Grand Prix

True. Look at last year’s race, Reynolds clearly had the fastest car but since he had those leg cramps late in the race, he ended losing the race.

22 classified as finished, but only 7 on the lead lap, and a few who were a huge number of laps down.
bartonez123 wow, a lot of DNF’s and not many contenders at the end of the race.

Because we use V8s not 2litre class and hard fast driving and skill that's why they were the best.
