I clean my car engine bays every time I change oil (every 10K miles). I sold my mk4 Golf with just shy of 400K miles on it, and the new owner was blown away by how clean the engine bay was. A little care can go a long way!
@@thatguypal5660 In VAG car manuals I have seen it is recommended to change oil every 15000km so 10k miles is a little bit over it but not that much. if those 10k miles where driven mostly extra urban and quality oil were used I think its no problem at all. But this depends on the engine also.
@@thatguypal5660 That was the recommended interval. I changed the oil 39 times in 393K miles. It still ran perfectly when I sold it. The car looked really damn good for being 18 years old too.
You clean your engine bay every 16k km? I normally clean mine AT LEAST once a month. But of course with our 5 month and counting lockdown I've become a bit lazy. So the show car's engine bay got cleaned maybe 3 times, and the other car doesn't really count since the engine bay is in pieces right now (getting everything painted/polished, and a full engine rebuild). By the way, I only use a garden hose (no HP cleaner) when there's oil to remove. So normally just a wet microfibre wipe down to remove dust, followed by silicone spray to make everything nice and shiny (I like that, as long s it's not streaky).
Me personally, I wouldn't never ever wash my engine bay by using a high pressure water. SORRY not risking any electrical component such as alternator ect..
Or even if you have loose reservoir caps/lids or dip stick housing because they can get tricky…also check pumps and master cylinder for leaks because they can also get pretty brutal
The beauty is that there is a lot less water. I get more nervous when I see folk spray away with the garden hose. The pressure washer actually gives you a lot more control and I think it's less risky. If you are talking classic cars it's an entirely different story though. Even a weak pressure washer can have enough power to compromise seals, get into the ignition, intake etc.

Some of the connections in engine bay not designed to be water tight!! Same good job can be done with low pressure water hose!! Even though they say they never had a problem...corrosion in electric contact doesn't progress fast.....so owner of the car might now even know that cause of the problem is engine bay detailing!!
You shouldn’t need to use one though. A hose and a cheap nozzle works just as good. Without worrying if you turned down pressure so it won’t destroy any ELECTRICAL components like small wires.
As an auto electrician , one small point, i have sorted so many, one quick jet wash under the bonnet and half a day trying to coax life back in a dead engine . Get water in a alternater, reconnect battery big bang . Do not do it , stay well stay safe .
Please note, you should always remove the earth lead first on the battery because if your spanner or ratchet had hit a piece of metal on engine or body you would get a serious short.
I have had bitter experience with cleaning engine bay with pressure washer, it was a diesel car, so i assumed there is nothing that could go wrong and blasted the engine bay with pressure washer for quite sometime without doing any of the safety procedure. When everything was done i went to crank the car, all i heard was click and it didnt crank at all. After trying to push start the car for 20mins are so, when i was about to give up the car came into life, drove it around for a while then never touched the engine bay. If at all i decide to clean it, i pick up a damp rag and just wipe off the dust.
I clean mine once a month. I find doing it that often makes it easier to clean. A lot of time just a quick wipe down is all it takes. I work on my own car, or makes it nice to fix something and not have it covered in grease. Great video as always!
it does, Stauffer Garage messed up alot in this video. You also should never wash the belt the one with the engine. I cringed alot watching this video.
you will not damage a alternator as all the components are sealed and the copper windings are coated , you may cause corrosion on soldered joints but not likely and the rectifier is sealed too but the bearings would not like the high pressure wash
Just don’t directly spray it, water gets in your engine bay and I’ve had my jeeps alternator completely underwater almost a few times😂 they’ll be okay as long as they don’t just sit in the water
I leave the car running while cleaning engine bays. Dries way quicker so you know water isn’t staying in unwanted places longer than it should. Been cleaning them over 10 years and have never had one problem. Great job on this one!
instead of convenience, its better to make sure you have carefully cleaned it even if it takes max 2 hours. Also the water can cause the metal in the engine bay to crack or be damaged.
As far as the battery not getting the love it deserves if your battery is dirty enough it can actually cause a draw across the terminals causing it die even with nothing on in the car by the way I actually do know that from experience and being certified in automotive electronics ps love the videos keep up the great work 💙💜💚
I had seen my uncle clean engine bays all the time so one day I thought I could give it a go. Ended up getting water into a sensor in my aunt's Chevy Tahoe. Luckily it was still under warranty. 😱🤦
Inside a sensor? What sensor was it? Usually if it starts acting up its most likely water in the connector pins of the sensor. Just dry them and good to go.
7:47 I also like to use 303 Protectant after cleaning the engine compartment . I liberally spray it all over the engine compartment and let it soak in for a few hours . No wiping or anything else and it dries without any issue . As the purpose to protect any and all , plastic and rubber components from the heat of the engine .
See this then I see A mechanic who works beside me . Came to my car wash to clean his engine bay a week ago. Didn't take the battery outeft his engine running. Then pressure washed it. Mad man.
All fine and dandy till later on when electrical stuff starts messing up because of the water that was possibly pushed up in the connections and corrodes the connections. Least that's my opinion. Some might get lucky and it never happen but it most likely will sooner or later
I have a dodge with the same dipstick for the trans and they don’t seal well and on any car I recommend putting a bag over the dipsticks to make sure no water mixes with the oil.
Question- with the newer cars, have you ever had a car that when the battery was disconnected, there was a loss of codes in the computer of that vehicle? Like for instance radio codes or other more modern functions. These new cars have more computer components making them basically a mini data center on wheels. Just curious! It's definitely rewarding! Even if you don't use a pressure washer you can achieve good results by taking your time to get to all the nooks and crannies.
Just take your time, and it will eventually come clean. That's how I do it, and I'm used to cleaning 30+ year old engine bays. Obviously for a very dirty engine bay you'll want to degrease and rinse at first, but my preferred method is a slow but steady hand cleaning, with as little water as possible. It can definitely be done. EDIT: Obviously for such old cars as I mentioned you'll want to cover the distributor and then clean it by hand (or face nasty misfires until all the water in it evaporates). But that's not an issue on modern distributorless engines.
Check with the place you bought it and see exactly what should be covered. My understanding is the newer vehicles it is fine to use low pressure to clean them out and also let it either air dry for a good 5 or more hours or blow it and let it air dry for a few more hours before starting. Also I check the air filter when doing this it is the #1 maintenance thing people forget to do.
You should use dry ice blasting... way better results..and you save the enviroment. There is no danger for electric stuff through the water. You save time and money. Best ive ever did to my car

Just dip em in some low voc mineral spirits and spray em with compressed air. I normally just spray everything down with that using my siphon wand anyway.
It is a jeep I do not think there are problems with water since the components are hermetic but I am concerned about the issue that with pressurized water there is a problem

fully wash the car after you’re done with that get a bucket add water and soap then get a clean microfiber drench it in the soapy water then completely cover the panel you’re about to do and clay bar as you go, then when you think your done get the microfiber and drench it on the panel and make sure it’s soft on every little spot you did, after that spray off with regular water, using the soapy water still gives you the lubricant you need in order not to burn your paint but faster than spraying a whole bunch of spray wax and needing a new bottle every time you clay, hope this helps

U would never catch me w a hose washing a customers engine. I sure don't want to replace half the components.not sure why people don't use common sence all u need is a portable steamer and some of that amorall waterless shine that comes in a aresol can and microfiber towl to get 20x better results w no harm to engine or electrical.
In terms of electrical components, steam is significantly more dangerous to use than water because steam can get into small crevices and then cause condensation on the insides of the connectors and switches. That's why you're not supposed to shower with a water resistant phone because steam can still get inside and damage it even if water can't

I don’t typically have any squeal because I rinse thoroughly. Air drying with the blower and in the sun helps ensure water in all spots is practically non existent
A recommendation... you should water protect the battery terminal cables with a glove or something... the cables ends shouldn't get water on them to prevent rust or corrosion.. the cables are bare metal..

Steel wool. 0000, or the finest you can get make an amazing job. From dead bugs to polish the glass surface it work marvelously! Use it dry, no chem products needed. No pressure needed in fact rub it very lightly. All will come out and leave an impeccable finish. Beside it's reusable and dirty cheap. What more can you ask for? ;-) BTW keep the steel wool dry or next time you need it will be rusted. Simple. Cheers

try the carpro perl for the engine bay... i use it on my engine bay aswell on my wheels cause u just spray it on the wet surface and i let it dry over the course of the day....
I'm personally not comfortable with HP cleaning an engine bay, but if you don't use pressure then you don't need to cover it. As a general rule, just don't force water into the alternator or electric/electronic connections. Remember, the engine does get a bit of water if you drive in the rain. I don't even disconnect the battery. But like I said, I don't use pressure. And I don't direct a stream of water at the battery, I clean that by hand with a damp microfibre.
Only a little bit, as long as you don't soak it on purpose. If it's really dirty you can just dampen a microfibre towel and use that to clean is as much as you can
The wax under the hood won’t last with the heat from the engine. You should try some Angel Wax products they are amazing and super easy to work with. Great material on your channel lad 👍🏼

How do I know what and where in my car engine are the parts sensitive to water and would need to be covered?
Most things are water tight even connectors but I would cover the ECM, dipstick tubes thats probably about it.

Try using Meguiars Detailer All Purpose cleaner and Meguiars Detailer degreaser. They come in gallon containers and they can be diluted

Steel wool. 0000, or the finest you can get make an amazing job. From dead bugs to polish the glass surface it work marvelously! Use it dry, no chem products needed. No pressure needed in fact rub it very lightly. All will come out and leave an impeccable finish. Beside it's reusable and dirty cheap. What more can you ask for? ;-)
BTW keep the steel wool dry or next time you need it will be rusted. Simple.

try the carpro perl for the engine bay... i use it on my engine bay aswell on my wheels cause u just spray it on the wet surface and i let it dry over the course of the day....

I'm personally not comfortable with HP cleaning an engine bay, but if you don't use pressure then you don't need to cover it. As a general rule, just don't force water into the alternator or electric/electronic connections. Remember, the engine does get a bit of water if you drive in the rain.
I don't even disconnect the battery. But like I said, I don't use pressure. And I don't direct a stream of water at the battery, I clean that by hand with a damp microfibre.

Is it ok to wet the alternator?
Only a little bit, as long as you don't soak it on purpose. If it's really dirty you can just dampen a microfibre towel and use that to clean is as much as you can
in Turkey engine water does not wash special spray chemical spray cloth air cleaned together water disrupts cable and system my opinion..
Does your engine bay detail not include the oil pan etc?
No I consider that underbody. Plus if I started that my ocd would just move to the suspension lol

The wax under the hood won’t last with the heat from the engine. You should try some Angel Wax products they are amazing and super easy to work with. Great material on your channel lad 👍🏼
