- Young Zach has been healthy and quick-learning, until he becomes a year old, when his right eye appears turned in. He has a lazy eye and needs glasses, but his corrective lenses don't help. His walking and talking abilities begin to deteriorate, and he develops issues with his immune system, yet doctors fail to find out the cause, until one learns that he has unusually high levels of iron in his brain. It turns out that Zach has been suffering from an extremely rare condition called Infantile Neuroaxonal Dystrophy (INAD).

Zach's case was one of the few times I don't blame the doctor's for not being able to diagnose him correctly. They did try. And bravo to his parents, especially his mother, for not being complacent throughout his illness. I'm sorry for the family's loss.
Everyone is always so quick to judge the doctors. They can't test for every disease on earth that it could be, or it would cost them and the families a fortune for all the times it is a common condition! These shows are great, but they always make it biased so the doctors seem to be at fault. Yes, occasionally doctors make mistakes. They aren't robots. But the protocol they follow isn't flawed, it saves lives in the most efficient way possible, and they are constantly finding new conditions, along with new treatments and cures.
So stop blaming them everyone.

There's absolutely no possible way they can know everything..
There are still so many things left to be discovered, treated, and cured.
The most important thing is having providers who listen to the patient, and truly care about their concerns as they are being expressed.
Zachary West lived for almost 13 years. He passed away May 11, 2013. I’m so glad his parents were able to have these years to love this very special boy.
Zach may not have been able to speak, but there's no doubt, from the look in his eyes, that he loved his parents! What a handsome young fellow. Rest in peace Zach.

I came to.the comments to check his progress and your comment hit me hard. You should have announced it better. Many people would not have known that he died .
Some disorders are so rare that most physicians have never heard of them NAD was only identified two years prior to Zach's mysterious symptoms. His mom was the key to finding the answer. Parents are the ones who love their children enough to be their advocates and to persevere until there is an answer.
I hear and feel for you,I suffer aswell,I left my home for a 3day trip,my eldest daughter spent a night as I was away.She said my house stank soo! Bad.I left out a cup of rue: flour and water,rotted and had a foul odor,maggots swarming.I asked what's up with the odor ?.

Over the years dealing with medical issues myself and with my family members i've realized that while doctors mean the best, they truly do not know as much as we think they do. My cousin has been sick for about four years now, to the point that she almost had to institutionalized due to her mental and physical issues. It took 4 years, so much money and like a hundred doctors to discover that she had mold poisoning and brain damage from a concussion. The brain damage let the mold past the protective barrier and into her brain, which combined with the brain damage, caused a host of problems. She is finally getting better and it's all thanks to both the doctors and perseverance on my family's part.
This show should be called “Mommy Diagnosis” the amount of mother’s that solve the problems is higher than doctors.
The power of a mothers love is unstoppable. Moms are the real superhero’s out there.
Our pediatrician asked me questions stating that I knew the baby, he didn't see the changes etc.
Non doctors are afforded much more time to search for answers. She is trying to solve one childs symptoms not 500 children at the same time. Doctors are up against a wall working 60+ hours per week, caring for hundreds of ill people.

I have Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome and it was my friend, who also has the condition, who gave me something to take to a doctor. I was diagnosed about 18 months later when I saw a geneticist.
The drs at our hospital called me "Dr. Mom" bc i told them which tests to run, and which diagnosis they would come to. 100% accuracy!🤔
Zach’s case was one of the hardest cases i have ever saw, no doubt. It is so heart breaking to see this. And his parents deserve a standing ovation for their efforts.

I knew a kid that had the same problem in primary school and he smelled like he pooped his pants, kids picked on him for it too. The teacher had to explain to us what was wrong with him so kids would stop picking on him. He was a really nice kid though and I felt sorry for him.

It must be totally heartbreaking to watch your child deteriorate like that. I really felt for his parents.
Cheryl & her husband are a great couple & what a strong woman she is, to have gone through that for so long. Now they know what causes it at least she can reduce the smell by watching her diet.
That last video of him walking is absolutely heart wrenching.

Kudos to Zach's mom. My son was also misdiagnosed several times and I researched and told doctors they were wrong. Finally found the right doctor and got a diagnosis that fit. Moms know their children better than anyone. Oh and one doc wanted to diagnose ME with Munchhausens by proxy!!!

With Zach, I can understand why they didn’t diagnose him for years. His condition wasn’t even known until a few years in, and even then there were only ten in the WORLD. I was sad to learn that he passed away though.

Ahhh poor little guy! I feel so sad for the mom. She knows if her child dies, he’ll be in a better place, but she just wants to keep him around for a long time.

My son went threw the exact same changes and he was diagnosed with adrenoleukystrophy. He got a transplant but he is now bed ridden has a trach can't support his head can't talk or eat 😖. Its so sad you get to meet this perfect child then little by little they get taken away.

So sorry. Have you tried Lorenzo's Oil. It shows promise, but isn't tested and expensive. Though it has said it helps manage symptoms in later cases such as your son's, but unfortunately will not stop disease progression past a certain point.

People just does not realize how painful it can be living with some kind of problem with sweating. I have the opposite, practically no sweat at all instead I get the fever. People does not want to stand close to me, not because of the smell, but because of the heat. I do smell nice all the time, yay, but I am like a walking heater and ofcourse it is not good for my RA, I am funny red and so on. People around are so hateful.

@@Kayleigh2002 Lol, it does, but I got you. I was also always cold, due to low blood pressure, but since I am on high dosage of antidepressants it´s all gone. My doctor said they work on the whole system and whole brain. I feel lot better now, only those sweat glance, I have them on my face, neck elbows and knees, that´s where I sweat. Face is most uncomfortable, but not as much as the fever. Still human being gets used to everything. If the low blood pressure is your case, you can try add bit more salt into your food or tea from white mistletoe, but be careful with it herbs are not called drugs for nothing and this one might be dangerous, not more than 2 cups a day. You take small pot about a mug size ( bit more, you need to finish with mug of tea, 1 full teaspoon of the drug (dry- flat when fresh) cover and boil for 20 mnt. You add the drug when the water boils and take the heat down, you do not need huge bubbles. Than decant and drink before it´s cold. Cold it´s terrible and always prepare fresh brew, you are not suppose to add sugar, but you can bit of honey. You can do 6 weeks, rest for month or another 6 and repeat. Do not make it stronger, if the taste is way too much for you add strawberry or raspberry leaf.

The fact she had to tell him that she had this problem probably means either he wasn't able to pick up on the odour or he found it pleasant.

When the specialist suggested a spinal tap I thought about why no other doctor thought to do that
spinal taps are painful and can be traumatic for kids, and are not risk free. You don't do them without a reason
Because it's very risky and drastic. They don't do them unless they are looking specifically for something in the spine they already have solid case to suspect it.

As for the lovely lady who suffered so much, My Husband best friend Dad had the same problem, This was many years ago, He showered 4 times a day, Nothing helped, He died never knowing why this was happening, People can be so cruel & my heart hurt for her, Those Nurses should be ashamed of themselves, We don't need those kind of nurses! Cheryle your a wonderful lady & far stronger than you know, You also have a fabulous husband who loved you for whom you was & are.
Man, I remember in year 8 when my anxiety was horrific I would be in a cold sweat every moment of every day. I too would feel like I was having a panic attack every time I got to the school gates. I tried all kinds of deodorants to cover it up to no avail. And I remember my "friends" of the time humiliating me over it and ending up sitting alone. It was horrible... Eventually I made friends in the year above and my anxiety became more manageable which stopped the excessive sweating. But for at least a year I had to deal with it and that was horrible. I also have a long history of being bullied before that so I can imagine how horrible she's been made to feel over the years :/
Years ago when I lived with my parents my mother would stress me out and my sweat would smell like onions. I was going through a lot of hormonal changes. I was in my 20's. Everything was fine until when my mom would get get into it over something. Just as soon as I would the smell would come back. I had to move out. The smell of onions made her sick.
After I wasn't so stessed the smell left. I haven't had the problem since.

-Second should of paid attention to her daughter, I know she said her mom was a single-mom but still. "Pretty sure you can not prescribe, let alone perform a surgery on a minor without parental consent."
It's in canada though so probably healthcare laws are different.

There's something angelic about Zach, like he's been 'lent' to Rachele for a short time.What a wonderful mother she was.
Poor Cheryl, I know how she feels. I have axillary hyperhydrosis and it’s so humiliating. the sweat goes cold so quickly making it really disgusting and uncomfortable. I have to get new tops or wear a jacket. I tried these awful prescription deodorants. I already take anti cholinergics for allergies. I’m waiting to see a dermatologist... still. i haven’t got the money to see a specialist privately.
It’s so uncomfortable and itchy. I get a rash and red spots under my arms. I don’t shave or wax, it bothers my skin too much and I don’t have the spoons to do it anyway due to disability. I use powder deodorant now from Lush as it causes the least irritation.
Do a liver cleanse this help me considerably decrease the smell

I knew Zach’s case was INAD, it was the first thing that popped up into my head, it’s crazy to think that back then it had only just been discovered. Such a horrible disease and I do hope they find a cure some day, RIP Zach 💔
His doctor was more close than any of those other specialists. At least she mentioned the word dystrophy. If they checked for all sorts of dystrophys I wonder if he could have been saved by delaying different outcomes and different treatments. Maybe drastically delayed other symptoms etc...

My husband worked with a guy (in the Air Force back in the 80s) who stank like rotting fish. Everyone wanted him to wash; he said it was a glandular issue. He had his own chair which no one else touched. Yes, apparently he had this disorder where he could not metabolize trimethyamine.
Fun fact: Shakespeare in The Tempest, Act 2, Scene 2, seems to be referring to someone with this disorder. Keep in mind that folks didn't wash much in Elizabethan times.

My boyfriend has a very similar condition that i forgot the name of, but he is extremely sensitive to any medication and his immune system is very weak, so when he had a vaccine at 6 months old it paralyzed him from the neck down. He's in a wheelchair but he isn't paralyzed anymore, but cant walk because of the lack of muscles in his legs. He's never been able to walk, but he's such a strong and determined soul and never lets it hold him back. He doesn't let it stop him from being his energetic and social self.

Our school had a kid that stunk no matter what he did as it was a medical condition. But since it was a distraction they kicked him out of school and he was forced to be homeschooled.

I also feel Cherol with her oder Problem, children can be mean, because no one can understand why she smells like this. I also don't understand why her mum didn't supported her in any way, this is a very hard life for her daughter to cope with her smell and her mum has done absolutely nothing, and even more I don't understand her colleagues when she was working at the hospital, ignorant people of doctors, terrible behaviour to have for another doctor, you don't do something like that. Viola Gentsch our teachers always taught us to respect others but kids were still cruel. It isn’t the responsibility of the teachers. Kids take on traits of their parents and other family members as well.

There was a woman friend of mine who had this same disorder in the odor department and the smell was just unidurable. I don't think she knew how treat it. It left a lingering smell in air and you wanted to hold your breath while being around her or get out of the room because if you inhaled it nearly took your breath, and you could taste it in your mouth. 😝🙁. It was really tough being around her.

Me and others that hang around one another. We use to tell others if we was musty or not . I said it don't bother me cause I've been that way before. Everyone will say they been musty before too. If they ain't been musty before it is something wrong with them .

Amy Jo Michael In this case, the progressive disease slowly destroyed parts of his brain. It got worse because the damaged parts built up over time.

Bearing in mind there is no socialised medicine in the USA like in the UK how do the parents pay for this very expensive treatment? Insurance? Or is it free?

A long-time friend had trimethylaminuria (TMAU). I suspected that it was caused by the food he ate as I knew that certain foods made me stink. His smell totally disappeared when he went on various weight-loss plans. Unfortunately, he was never able to remain on a plan for any significant amount of time so he spent most of his life with an offensive odor. In my case, anything with high levels of B12 and garlic makes me stink so I avoid those foods if I know I'm going to be around people.
