When i see the title of the vid I suddenly remember my little brother Ryland whos been diagnosed with PANDAS. I still remember the time when Im 13 and hes 10.He acting weird like this and sometimes he go into my room and just stare at me like a demon just possessed him for 10 mins, and then go back to his room and do it again and again every single day. My mom and my dad literally so concerned about him and every single night they cry About 7 months after taking a lot of medication,tears and concerned he come back normal like theres NOTHING has happening to him.He didn’t even remember anything from the time he has PANDAS.Thank god. Right now Ryland is 22 and one of my great models and a successful person.I love him so much

Frustrating how these doctors and psychologists just stay with their own expertise and not look further. What happened to doing blood tests and basic care. Just give them meds without understanding. She should have taken him to regular Drs as well. Once the pediatrician got to him, finally there was the answer. Would have rained hell on the psych for not doing due diligence.
Yes and no - The psychologist and psychiatrist were operating within their bounds, and acted based on the symptoms that were presented to them. A psychologist can't order blood tests, and it's impossible to know what went down in their sessions without being there. I can't imagine how frustrated and helpless the mother and Sammy must have felt, it's such a blessing that they found that specialist!
Nona Cee yes I’d agree the psychologist isn’t ideal for medical diagnosis but the psychiatrist should have been more vigilant they are trained medical physicians. However in my experience they rarely think outside the mind and look for underlying disorders I would be seeking to get that shrink retrained. I had very negative experience with a psychiatrist telling me my child had ADHD and give him Ritalin and failing to diagnose his autism which of course doesn’t respond to stimulants

The mother must’ve paid them an absolute fortune! Imagine a family that didn’t have the financial means to get help; the outlook would be terrible! I live in England, and we have a national health service. It’s far from perfect, but nobody dies for want of money to pay for medical treatment.

My daughter has O C D, and Autism many of her behaviours were so similar to this kid and worse! She's on meds now which helps, now she is 19 and past puberty she has calmed down a lot.
In the uk we first go to our GP, family dr, he refers you a specialist appropriate to your symptoms, if The specialist decides you need to see another consultant, all blood works will have been done on your first hospital visit, medications for young, or elderly or those suffering from a chronic life threatening disease like diabetes are free, if not in these categories there is a standard charge. This darn NHS, no wonder America isn't interested, (joke). Save our NHS.
Totally agree, I think we are so lucky to have our NHS, I can't believe how I hear so many people complain about it but I have only ever been treated really well and with care, if I'm ever I'll then all I have to do is go across the road and my family GP is right there and then if he thinks I need to see anyone else then we get refered by him we are very lucky in England

I love the NHS they help me keep my thyroid hormones in control. As I have a life long disease I get a medical exemption certificate that means I get all prescriptions for free.

I empathise with Linda. I suffered from chronic idiopathic urticaria for eight years. I was on corticosteroids the entire eight years. They saved my life but also produced the most awful side effects. The cause of my urticaria was eventually discovered, not by the vast numbers of doctors, specialists and tests over the years and the tens of thousands spent but by an iridologist who didn’t charge me a cent. He saved my life. I was symptom free a month later and 12 years later I still am. Doctors don’t know everything
Yeah I don't get how they investigated allergies and left it at that. It seemed like a clear-cut diagnosis to me. Anaphylactic shocks in association with a non-contact dermatitis immediately point to an auto-immune component. The link with the menstrual cycle points to an auto-immune reaction against hormones. You don't just keep a patient on steroids if the condition persists, cause steroids are no joke. You keep investigating.

A cardiac specialist will find some some cardiovascular explanation. And not one of them will make use of their colleagues! Until you finally get the ONE decent doctor who isn't controlled by arrogance. (And BTW that's likely to be a woman - have you noticed these cases are almost always solved by women?)

No I don't think that's the case at all. They aren't trained in blood work or viruses, nor can they do those kinds of tests, so they acted on the symptoms that were presented to them (which are very close to those of OCD and Tourettes). There were no standard symptoms of strep, so it was well outside their area of specialty. Most psychologists and psychiatrists are reluctant to prescribe medications unless symptoms are affecting day to day life, in which case it becomes necessary. People also respond differently to medications, so trying medications over the course of six months or so is pretty standard. There's no lack of people seeking assistance with their mental health, and keeping them on for a very long time would deter people from seeing those specialists, so it would be a very ineffective way to operate... Are there bad eggs? Absolutely, as there are in any area of work. Were these people bad? No, I don't think so.

Nowadays, there are very important factors such as neuroscientific and imaging methods that are studied in depth. And I do mean registered Psychologists.

In the comment section of these videos we can see „hindsight bias“ at work: If you know the eventual outcome already, you tend to judge everything that has lead up to it with that outcome in mind, regardless of the data and information available at the time of the incident as well as any other personal backgrounds. But it really is annoying, suddenly everyone in the comments is a doctor that is aware of the existence of these extremely rare diseases 🤔 Like in one episode a girl experienced hair loss and the doctors turned it away due to stress. So many people in the comments were questioning the doctors credibility.... but seriously? Alopecia is a really common hair loss disease that is caused by stress, if they attributed such a symptom to an extreme disease such as what it was (I can’t remember what it was) then there’d be a lot of misdiagnosis and an expense of lots of money and resources... smh
I have bletheritis. It started when I was 12 because it usually flares up because of hormone changes. Being a woman, I literally can get an eye infection more than once a month. I have to put steroid eye drops 4 times a day and hot flannels 2 times a day. My eyesight is extremely bad. I would give anything to get my life back.
I really feel I have to add some information about OCD as here the information gives a false idea. I myself was a severe case of OCD and did behavioral therapy over a year. There are medication that help you defeat your urges to do this behaviors. BUT you need to do behavioral therapy! you can just take medication and it goes. OCD is learned behaviour you need to understand what happens in your brain and what happens if you resist the urges. The therapie is basically learning and understanding, the medicin is just a help in the progress. If someone is suffering of OCD syptoms please go to a specialis for OCD! The behavioral therapy is crucial. You can defeat it with the right help! The right help is not just medication...
my daughter is also diagnosed with OCD. she’s been attending occupational therapy for years. but because of the pandemic we have to stop her therapy because occupational therapy is so expensive😔

People that have commented on the way the NHS works. Quite often our gp's are so overworked, or sometimes just plain arrogant, they have little time to consider diagnosis outside their immediate knowledge. Pandas does not always show up in blood-work as easy as this case. So the gp would probably have referred them to CAMHS (Children's and Adolescents Mental Health Service or Community paed, depending on your area this can take anything from a few months to a few years. My daughter is diagnosed (ASD) when we moved our paed tried to refer my daughter on as transference of care. In my new area CAMHS deals with this stuff. Six months we are still to even get an appointment, when we do it will prob take a few months to see them. My own GP commented "lets face it we don't have a service". Our friends have children with Pandas, unfortunately the answer isn't always as straightforward as it was in this case either. I have heard of one woman who when she suggested to GP PANDAS and presented lots of evidence and research the doctor said yes I know all about PANDAS they live in forests and eat bamboo. The neurologists who deal with PANDAS in the uk still do not seem as forward thinking as in the US and are not willing to try the same medications. AS much as I am truly grateful for a free health service it really isnt working for millions of people
Sammy is lucky to be cured. There are so many special needs kids out there with OCD, Autism, Tourettes etc who can't be cured and have to live the symptoms for the rest of their lives.
Autism isn't something you can cure... OCD and Tourettes are also things that can't be cured but treated with medication and a psychiatrist. People learn how to work with it and can live a normal life through medication and therapy.
I thought psychiatrists are medically trained. Even if they didn't know what it was, I think they should have referred him to a neurologist, especially since the meds they prescribed didn't work. I'm quite shocked they kept telling the mother to wait and even to "ignore" his odd behaviours... how could she? 😲
A psychiatrist is a doctor, I think you’re confusing a psychiatrist with a psychologist. Psychiatry is a medical field, they can administer medications, do tests, refer to other specialists and diagnose, just like other doctors. Their specialization is just psychiatric disorders.

I find that really odd. In Australia you have to go to a gp doctor before you can see any other doctors or specialists.

PANDAS is such a cute name for a disease, but I felt so bad for Sammy. He seemed to be so hurt when he had the disease

And of course with all the information present it is easy to point fingers and call people incompetent.

Like in one episode a girl experienced hair loss and the doctors turned it away due to stress. So many people in the comments were questioning the doctors credibility.... but seriously? Alopecia is a really common hair loss disease that is caused by stress, if they attributed such a symptom to an extreme disease such as what it was (I can’t remember what it was) then there’d be a lot of misdiagnosis and an expense of lots of money and resources... smh
I have bletheritis. It started when I was 12 because it usually flares up because of hormone changes. Being a woman, I literally can get an eye infection more than once a month. I have to put steroid eye drops 4 times a day and hot flannels 2 times a day. My eyesight is extremely bad. I would give anything to get my life back.

I really feel I have to add some information about OCD as here the information gives a false idea. I myself was a severe case of OCD and did behavioral therapy over a year. There are medication that help you defeat your urges to do this behaviors. BUT you need to do behavioral therapy! you can just take medication and it goes. OCD is learned behaviour you need to understand what happens in your brain and what happens if you resist the urges. The therapie is basically learning and understanding, the medicin is just a help in the progress.
If someone is suffering of OCD syptoms please go to a specialis for OCD! The behavioral therapy is crucial. You can defeat it with the right help!
The right help is not just medication...
my daughter is also diagnosed with OCD. she’s been attending occupational therapy for years. but because of the pandemic we have to stop
her therapy because occupational therapy is so expensive😔

People that have commented on the way the NHS works. Quite often our gp's are so overworked, or sometimes just plain arrogant, they have little time to consider diagnosis outside their immediate knowledge. Pandas does not always show up in blood-work as easy as this case. So the gp would probably have referred them to CAMHS (Children's and Adolescents Mental Health Service or Community paed, depending on your area this can take anything from a few months to a few years. My daughter is diagnosed (ASD) when we moved our paed tried to refer my daughter on as transference of care. In my new area CAMHS deals with this stuff. Six months we are still to even get an appointment, when we do it will prob take a few months to see them. My own GP commented "lets face it we don't have a service". Our friends have children with Pandas, unfortunately the answer isn't always as straightforward as it was in this case either. I have heard of one woman who when she suggested to GP PANDAS and presented lots of evidence and research the doctor said yes I know all about PANDAS they live in forests and eat bamboo. The neurologists who deal with PANDAS in the uk still do not seem as forward thinking as in the US and are not willing to try the same medications. AS much as I am truly grateful for a free health service it really isnt working for millions of people

Strep infection caused me Rheumatoid arthritis when i was kid.
The onset in the first case was so rapid that it couldn’t be just a psycological disorder.
I often consider this, that so much is unknown or rare about human health, and what gets treated as mental illness, is really a physical pathology.

This sounds like rheumatic fever which is quite serious. You should see your doctor because repeated episodes can cause heart valve damage.
Sammy is lucky to be cured. There are so many special needs kids out there with OCD, Autism, Tourettes etc who can't be cured and have to live the symptoms for the rest of their lives.
Autism isn't something you can cure... OCD and Tourettes are also things that can't be cured but treated with medication and a psychiatrist.
People learn how to work with it and can live a normal life through medication and therapy.
You can't cure Autism

I thought psychiatrists are medically trained. Even if they didn't know what it was, I think they should have referred him to a neurologist, especially since the meds they prescribed didn't work. I'm quite shocked they kept telling the mother to wait and even to "ignore" his odd behaviours... how could she? 😲
Psychiatrists are physicians specialties in psychiatry, psychologists are not physicians. At least in Germany.

A psychiatrist is a doctor, I think you’re confusing a psychiatrist with a psychologist. Psychiatry is a medical field, they can administer medications, do tests, refer to other specialists and diagnose, just like other doctors. Their specialization is just psychiatric disorders.
