  • Rousimar Palhares is one of, if not, the most controversial fighter to have ever fought in professional grappling and MMA. His ability to get to his desired leg lock positions, coupled with his tendencies to keep cranking after the tap, made him one of the most feared fighters in the circuit.

one thing i heard, i don't know how accurate, is that Palhares is dumb as a brick, and he's too dumb to know to let go. The knockout loss to Nate Marquart was hilarious. You just show the very end of it here but he had Nate's leg and Nate was able to pull his leg away from Palhares. Palhares pointed at Nate's leg and said something (probably about Nate being greased, as no one really pulled away from Palhares when he was nearing that heel hook position). Palhares then looked at the ref and began to complain that Nate's legs must be greased. Nate, not giving a fuck about what Palhares was saying and realizing the fight was still going on, dove in and knocked Palhares the fuck out. It was very satisfying for those of us watching MMA at the time. Palhares always tried to damage people with submissions and many of us wanted to see him get some karma back.

There shouldn't be rules that specifically benefit one style by intentionally forcing the other person to be defenseless in that situation. You could disallow a specific leg submission if you want though, that seems fine, but I think that just makes fights a little less interesting as great wrestlers then have 1 less thing to be scared of and ground/pound increases.

If a guy like that was around in today’s world he would have been gone out of the gym the same day, doing reckless shit and probably shot as well by some irate student, I’m surprised the same thing didn’t happen to Palhares tbh, his actions were def tell tale that he was begging to be retaliated on.

The answer to this is quite simple, know your own body and the signals sent when being touched in any manner. Generally speaking, it seems that most fighters wait for the referee to end the match, so they don't notice the "tap out" due to concentrating on the effort itself. This in fact, is putting the referee before the fighter, which is wrong. It is the safety of BOTH fighters that is the issue in this matter, therefore they as fighters or competitors have the FIRST RESPONSIBILITY to recognize a tap out when it is executed, and cease the effort to force a tap out, knowing such can result in a serious injury if not stopped in time.

Tim Silva got his arm snapped up because he wouldnt tap and tried to slam out of an armbar. Silvia even tried to continue the fight and said his arm wasnt broken when we all saw it snap live on the PPV. Noguera got HIS arm snapped up in an Americana (iirc) because he would NOT tap. Not even close to the same thing, not in the same universe.
