Near where I grew up in Birmingham, AL, there is an old Catholic church and currently the priest there is a Vietnamese man who became a priest in Vietnam and was transferred to the US by the Catholic leaders when the old priest passed away. I got to meet him when the company I worked for was installing some new speakers to replace the old ones from like 1970. He has such a fascinating story of how he ended up moving to the US and is one of the nicest people I've ever met.

I don't have a nightlife, so staying at one of the hotels in Bui Vien Walking Street posed as a challenge to my sleep in my five days' stay there. Out of all the cuisines in SE Asia, which are almost entirely rice-and-noodle-based, they definitely have the best dishes centered around *bread.*

Looks like you had a blast!!
Surprisingly, the cuisine that seems the closest to Korean is none of their immediate neighboring countries, but rather its tropical/bayou cousin down south. O_O

I am from North Eastern part of India(the melting pot Headquarter of Indo-Aryan, Chinese and South East Asian culture in Asia) Mainland Indians always confuse us for Chinese,Vietnamese or Thai. The region has three Christian majority states (Sino-Tibetan group) and 1 Christian majority state belonging to the Mon-Khmer group and the other three states that are Hindu and Buddhist East Asian and Indo-European looking people. Come visit when you can, you will be surprised I tell you.

Hey Barbs, I hope you get to visit Kuching in Sarawak, Malaysia Borneo anytime in the future. I remembered watching your Malaysia episode in the past and it'd be fun if you explore the local food and culture and visit Borneo Cultural Museum or The Rainforest World Music Festival in June which is held every year.

I first discovered Vietnamese food in Minnesota in the early 1980s, when a Vietnamese family - very newly arrived to the US - moved in across the street from us. I met them as they were moving in. There were three generations in the family and the kids were approximately my age, and spoke English well. They invited me for dinner not long afterwards and I had my first taste of Vietnamese food. I WAS IN HEAVEN. Good GRIEF, the flavors were so unlike what I was used to. Very soon, numerous Vietnamese restaurants opened around my area, and we are all the better for it! This was over 40 years ago and Vietnamese is still one of my favorite cuisines. I'm so lucky to live in an area with amazing Asian restaurants. If you are ever in the Twin Cities area, check out Eat Street in Minneapolis and Little Mekong in St. Paul (oh and we also have several good Korean restaurants around here too, Barbs!) 😄
