Two things I really like about Eric Burdon: (1) He always seems authentic to me--that grit, with underlying vulnerability, feels real, and not a pose; and (2) I once read an interview where he described his politics as "to the left of the red," which I thought was great.

Hilton Valentine wrote the iconic guitar riff for the Animal's version, and never got a penny for it. Until he passed a few years ago, he lived in Wallingford CT, the next town over from where I lived, and he used to play solo shows in local pubs, where he'd do folk, old rock 'n' roll and skiffle tunes with his band Skiffledog. And of course some Animals songs. He couldn't have been a nicer guy, and was always a pleasure to talk to.

A band that I never heard of until recently called Frijid Pink made a psychedelic cover of this back in 1970 and had a hit with it, and the story behind that cover is quite interesting (if you guys are interesting in reading it) These guys an album and had a single out that didn't take off, during the time they were doing that record, they had some spare time left in the studio, so they recorded "House of the Rising Sun" just to use that time up, and they nothing of it. Meanwhile, the drummer was dating this girl whose father was a music director for this radio station at a local radio station, so he showed his band’s tape to him, there was no tracks that interested the girlfriend's father, and when the tape was almost over, this cover comes on and the drummer immediately turns it off because this wasn’t a track he wanted the girlfriend's father to hear, but the father insists he plays it and he did and the father loved the track, and the record label was about to release another song as the single, but the girlfriend's father said "Tell the label to drop that one and go with "House of the Rising Sun.’ A few weeks later, the drummer and his girlfriend were parked in the Cannon’s driveway after a date, sharing a few kisses, when her father tapped on the window. and the drummer thought he was in in when her father was tapping the window. Nope, what happened was, the father tapped and said‘Come in the house, I got something I want you to hear.’ The drummer inside and ‘House of the Rising Sun’ was blaring out of the radio, and that cover was a big hit for them, and sadly, their only hit, it's an interesting story, never heard of that cover till recently, hope you guys (and the Professor) enjoyed reading this. (Hope I'm not taken over your job Professor, You're good at what you do, keeping the music alive)

Its amazing the amount of content you have. I really like this story. Our garage band played played several of the Animals songs back in the 1960s.

Eric Burdon's biggest enemy was Eric Burdon. Everything he touched musically was gold.

I remember when my husband at the time and I saw an original vid of this song and saw Eric Burden - we couldn't believe this voice came out of some guy that looked so innocent and highschoolish! His vocals are just INCREDIBLE!
I am glad you did this interview - But when I lived in New Orleans (NOLA for those of us that lived there) I always heard it was written by a woman but about a male prison and that the prisoners called it the House of the Rising Dun because of the main window to the prison - faced the East and the sun would burn brightly through those windows! I am glad to hear the different theories!. Again another great vid about history and great music!
YES I love that great bass riff from We Got To GEt Out of this Place!

The Animals were always in my collections. When i heard them, i was amazed, and to this day, i still am. There is no one who sounds like them. I was also a big fan of "WAR," another great band, and the common denominator, of course, Eric Burdon. It's that voice, and it drew me in like no one else at the time. Fantastic Bands.

'60 were a times of great transformation.. from a child to a man. The music was epic in it's unique approach to telling stories about the times, about life. Eric Burton, one of my top singers and the Animals were a great band. Thanks for sharing, prof. ;o)

Very cool! I used to play “House of the rising sun” in a band I was in back in the 1980’s! The triplets on the ride cymbal was awesome! Towards the end of the song we were really jamming hard! Awesome band! Eric seems to be a really nice and a cool guy! Great interview! 😋🤘🤘🤘

One of the best singers ever. I first heard "House Of The Rising Sun" when I was a kid back in the 1970s. Been in love with it ever since.
As for "We Gotta Get Out Of This Place". There's something about the bass guitar that's always turned me on. The way it reaches into my soul and won't let go. Any song with a strong bass will always grab my attention. ❤❤❤❤❤❤

I absolutely love Eric Burton! He is the best at taking a song and interpreting it with his style and feeling to make it something different than anyone before or since, capturing a unique feel. I saw him perform live and it was hands down one of my absolute favorite shows ever. Also love when you get interviews in the artists personal space at home, I try to get a vibe on who they are. I'm jealous because I would love to sit down with Eric and talk about his music.

Rising Sun...the reason I started playing guitar. I've loved The Animals from my earliest teenage years and still listen to them today. (Fave song: Don't Bring Me Down). Should've asked Eric how he feels being The Eggman (from I Am The Walrus). Hahaha.

The Animals had an impact that is easy for teenagers to identify with. They presented one of the essential strains of the rock and roll counterculture and Eric Burden’s singing was both subtle and powerful. “We got to get out of this place” reflected the feeling of being trapped that many teens felt whether locked into poverty or locked into the educational path to wealth. As teens often felt misunderstood by their parents and the older generation we clamored for understanding. The value of these songs was the larger influence on the listener than might have been expected. Eric Burden ranks right up there with the best rock and roll singer/songwriters.

I was late today, and so was the Professor?
Eric Burton might be the most underrated voice in rock history, along with Dan Fogelberg. 🤷
Maybe the "house of ill repute" was a prison? Just a thought.
    Thanks Professor!

One of my favorite Animals songs is a not so well known hit called "Shake". Very upbeat and "makes you wanna" dance song. Very old school rock n roll song.
One thing I've never known about Eric Burton is how did he end up singing with War, a funk band? The combination worked! But it was an odd marriage of genres. War is a classic band too.

I was 5 or 6 when The Animals released Rising Sun. It took a few years before l understood what the house was. But sometime in the late 60's or early 70's the local radio station played Joan Baez's cover. That was a shocking outlook! Have always loved it too.

Kudos for mentioning Frijid Pink. Their version of this song is by far my favorite. To me it's definitive, even though they cut a verse off the end. I don't know why classic rock streamers and radio have ignored it almost completely.
