It's a wonderful song. All of the originals on the album are great. If the record company wasn't so greedy they would have had more time to write more songs and they wouldn't have sounded so tired and cranky in the performances.

I've never thought of it as a very strong song. But then Yes covered it on their first album (long before 'Roundabout' etc). And made it a showcase for their guitar player, Peter Banks. Might not be to everyone's taste, but does prove that Lennon/McCartney could be counted on for a strong foundation, no matter what the finished product sounded like.

Yes indeed , Agree on it's greatness and how it is overlooked or dismissed. They used innovative recording methods such as the Timpani/kettle drums and the piano combination to make a cool percussion effect during the chorus along with the tasteful 12 string guitar accent parts. It shows their advancement as songwriter recording artists utilizing new ideas.

"Beatles for Sale" is definitely in my top five favorite Beatles albums. The vocals are raw and emotive, capturing the band's weariness during this transitional phase. Each member brought something unique to the table, and their harmonies blend together beautifully. The instrumentation, those jangly guitars and driving rhythms, just adds to the overall vibe. I can really feel the emotion in every note, reflecting both the thrill of fame and the fatigue that comes with it. It has this perfect mix of passion and authenticity that makes me love this album even more!

Great overview Andrew. As an American, I was “gobsmacked” when I found and brought home a UK copy of Rubber Soul as a 14-year old, in 1974. I was just so impressed at how much better everything seemed - the quality, the extra tracks, everything. So I took a chance at taking the “address” for EMI on the rear panel (EMI Records Ltd., Hayes, Middlesex, England) and sent a letter requesting a list of Beatles LPs in print, prices and shipping costs (I also asked for a Beach Boys and Hollies list, for good measure). Despite the overwhelming odds of my not getting any reply, what do you know? The kind people at EMI handed off my letter to an HMV shop in London who sent me a list! I collected up my summer job money, went to the post office to get an international money order in pounds sterling and sent it off. Getting that box of brand new UK Beatles records (and a blue label German Odeon of “The Beatles Beat”) just had me ecstatic. And it was “Beatles For Sale” that impressed me most on those first listens. In fact, I remember the first play - No Reply somehow sounded incredible to me, unlike the way I’d always heard it before. So much better (stereo mix, of course). In the decades since, I think Beatles For Sale is probably my second most played Beatles album, after Rubber Soul. I’ve always associated it with Rubber Soul as it sounds like its precursor with the variety of styles you hear on it. The highs on Help! are higher, sure, but I think Beatles For Sale is a better album to my ears. I think I have more copies of Beatles For Sale than their other albums: a UK Parlophone Y&B stereo, a UK EMI one-box, a stereo from the UK blue box that’s still sealed, a still sealed Australian stereo (probably a 70s or 80s orange label), a Japan 1986 Odeon mono, a 2014 mono, the American cousin in the form of the new US Beatles ’65 mono and, still, if a new all analog remaster ever comes out I’ll likely get that too. Love it. Guess that’s obvious.

The way this album opens up with “no reply” and John’s one the verge… , incredible song writing . “I don’t want to spoil the party” hauntingly beautiful, well rounded perfect song. John’s vocals have so much despair and George’s perfect well rounded exulted guitar solo fits so well within the melody and theme of the song. Most people don’t fully digest this album to begin with.

I grew up in the 80’s and 90’s. I started collecting and listening to music seriously around 1988. The Beatles were well known to me because of the radio always on at my house and also my mother who is a first generation fan. I didn’t pay much attention to them early on. I thought they were weak. Fast forward to the cold and endless winter of 1994. Every other day was either snow or rain which would then freeze and turn to ice. On one cold night I was out with a friend driving around to visit a girl I was sweet on. She had a boyfriend and we were just friends. We stopped at her house. She lived with her parents. Her car was there. Her parents let my friend and me in. She was upstairs with her boyfriend. Wouldn’t come downstairs. We left. We go to another friend of mine who was a Beatle fan. We go inside his house and he was listening to No Reply. It was at that moment that I got into the Beatles. The next day I found A Hard Day’s Night and Beatles for Sale on CD. They have been in rotation ever since. I remember trying to play along on the guitar to No Reply. I also remember my mother singing along to Honey Don’t. So the album doesn’t have Ticket To Ride or She Loves You. It is in my opinion a collection of deep tracks.

Fun Facts: The feedback occurred during the recording of Eight Days A Week. The harmonic note it creates is an A note. As it so happened, this A note is the '5th' note in Johns D major chord that starts I Feel Fine. This would not have worked if the Beatles didn't shift the original key of I Feel Fine from A major down to G major. This key shift down 1 whole step made I Feel Fine easier for John to sing AND made the edit of the feedback on the songs intro fit so seamlessly. Such was the charmed life of the Beatles in late 1964. I believe I Feel Fine was the crest of Beatlemania. Certainly, Shea Stadium was a massive cultural event. But 1965 saw the arrival of so many new bands competing with the Beatles for airplay and record sales. Lastly, had George not played such an unbelievably feeble guitar solo on Leave My Kitten Alone, I believe it would have made the final cut for Beatles for Sale. Instead of the much-maligned Mr. Moonlight. Excellent dissertation Andrew. I really enjoyed it. Cheers, RNB

Adding to what you said about George's excellent break on, "I Don't Want To Spoil The Party", a highly effective feature is the vocals lines swapping between verse and chorus. With Paul singing a dark-sounding lower part from the start, John's voice stands out so plaintively and - brilliantly - makes the chorus all the more defiant as Paul's upper line shines bravely over John's urgent underpinning. There can't be many three minute pop songs that are this simple in story line, while so accomplished in performance. It's also the best-recorded overall on the album, to my ears, having bite and immediacy that is lacking in some other tracks.

I knew this LP as the American versions, "Beatles '65" and "Beatles VI" which were my father's records. I first heard of "Beatles for Sale" when I heard the German version (without the gatefold cover) when I was living in Geneva, Switzerland, in 1977, (where I also discovered the "Beatles Beat" LP which has easily the best international cover that I'd ever seen). It was a revelation for me, there are other Beatles LPs all over the world? I was hooked on collecting Beatles LPs from that moment.

I enjoy the album. I like 'Mr. Moonlight' regardless how other listeners feel about the song. You are correct on 'Honey Don't', very lackluster performance by Ringo, although I find it humorous when Ringo tells George to rock on for him! And yes, John's version on the BBC is more energetic than Ringo's by a mile. I did read 'Rock and Roll Music' and 'Kansas City' was knocked out in one take. Being played since their Hamburg days, it was an easy recording for them to do.
Having a world tour and traveling all over the world, I'm surprised they had time to even record an album, let alone having originals on the album.

Beatles 65 was given to me by my sister in law( along with Something New and Magical Mystery Tour around '69..my older siblings had given me their Beatle stash up until Revolver..65 was and still is a very exciting collection..my younger siblings and I used to get in big trouble for scream singing along with Babs in Black..what fun..! That said I finally copped Beatles for Sale sometime in the '80s when searching out the original song sequences for the Beatle albums..it was delightfully overwhelming, with more trax than our Capitol versions..and absolutely , the liner notes from one of my fave 5th Beatle are a total joy!!.. thank you for the excellent video!

I think that Beatles 65/Beatles VI were also equally under appreciated here in the US. Regardless, Beatles For Sale is a still very good album in spite of so many covers.
While I’m sure your assessment of Mr. Moonlight is accurate as far as popularity (or lack thereof) in the catalog of songs, Lennon’s killer vocal opening is worth the price of admission on that track IMO. Keep the great videos coming !

I always thought the organ was out of place, but maybe the Beatles were having a little fun poking at the crooners by using the organ for that exaggerated effect. John's vocals were incredible, though. The Hammond organ would play a role in other Beatles recordings, such as Paul's I'm Looking Through You and Get Back, which were much better suited.

Why was "Beatles for sale" ever maligned? The band at the time were the hardest working musicians in the World. Under constant scrutiny and having to record, play and appear at press conferences and concerts, their workload was relentless. In the light of that situation this album was an excellent achievement. I still enjoy the Lennon/ McCartney compositions to this day and can certainly forgive them for some of the cover versions. Thanks for your research and excellent presentation, Andrew. 👍🎸😁😎

It gets a bit maligned for a couple of reasons. For one, it contains more covers than on albums immediately before and after it. And one of those covers, Mr. Moonlight, is especially weak and dated.
Of course, most acts would have loved to have an album at Beatles For Sale level, and it does contain some wonderful songs. But the album as a whole is not as sharp or inspired as the ones before and after it, hence its general pick as the least of their albums. It's not a bad album in any case.

      Easy. Their next album.
The whole of the first side is classic, cool Beatles.
Beatles for Sale is the sound of a band that are suffering from being viewed as children. Help is the sound of a group growing up. It's more autobiographical, better produced, more spacious and better written. It is catchy, has sunshine and depth. Babys in Black is a good song for example. Obviously it's a good song.
