I have no regrets and I will do it all over again. But HaShem are aged everything that I started my Jewish journey when my parents were both niftir. I'm an outsider (not Jewish) and I don't mind being called a goy, but I know it's a word I shouldn't use for myself because a certain evil group of people call themselves that. It is a word I don't think a lot of non-Jewish people know. As a half-Indigenous person whose family lost their language generations ago through assimilation, Riki Rose, please continue to celebrate and protect Yiddish in song and in casual speech. It's a beautiful language and your confident, beautiful voice displays it so well.

It really added a lot of color and texture to what she spoke about, especially when it came to her grandparents' struggles and storytelling after the Holocaust and the suppression she faced as a young woman with a voice within a community that wanted her to be small and quiet.
I can relate to a large family in a tiny apartment in Brooklyn. I never had my own bed let alone a bedroom. We were poor but as a little kid I didn’t know any better. At times I would go to my grandmothers apartment to sleep at night. Kids are very resilient I think.
I think if there’s love, friendship and poverty, children don’t really feel it the way it seems from the outside. I didn’t grow up anything on that level of poverty but I didn’t feel I was lacking for never having a room to myself.

Yes! There’s a university to women and the experiences we have especially in our teen years. I think you can see how full of life and mischief Hasidic girls are too, even though in the media they are often painted as so flat and two dimensional. I love how complex and human Riki’s story feels.

My grandparents spoke fluent Yiddish, but I was never taught to speak it. I don't understand the words, but I really like her voice. I enjoy learning from my fellow Jews. My grandparents were Orthodox and they raised my dad and his 2 brothers in Newark New Jersey back when it was mostly Jewish. This was a wonderful interview. 2 very talented Jewish women sharing stories and songs. Thank you!

@@qwaleteeI'm wondering what time period also because I'm born and raised in Newark and I don't recall it ever having any type of Jewish population, I recall it being mostly Italian... 🤔 Now it is mostly black and Hispanic so idk when the Jewish transition occurred but it has to be only in the last 10 years or less. I never saw a real Jewish person a day in my life until I moved to NY and that was only 14 years ago.
During one of Frieda’s previous episodes (about Hasidic girls) I wrote in the comments that over 50 years ago when I was 14 or 15 I had a “flirtation” with a Hasidic Satmar girl in Williamsburg. For a few months her friends and my friends (Catholic boys) would chat after they got out of school. She and I would step away to talk privately leaving the other two boys and two girls a few feet away. (Soooo bad. LOL). She was very pretty and precocious. She was as interested in my life as I was in hers. It lasted a short period of time but it was cute. The commenters said it would have been impossible and that there was no way such a rebellious and adventurous Hasidic girl could exist. But, as a teenager, Riki seems to have been such a rebellious girl. I’m convinced more than ever that this memory is real and not a figment of my imagination. LOL
People can leave such weird comments. Sounds like a totally believable story to me! Sometimes people buy into a very binary view: they're all saints or all sinners. We're humans, so some people go hard at the rules, others are always dreaming of ways to break them. I hope you cherish your lovely memories.

Got goosebumps listening to Riki sing. Such a talent! As a child, my biggest fear was the return of Jesus and it was so interesting to hear that I’m not alone in that. I always felt guilty because I was supposed to be happy about that but I wanted to get to live my life. Seems that too is something Judaism and Catholicism have in common. 😂

A beautiful interview. One difference is that Riki seems to have the support of her sisters and her mother. Many of the religious who leave the fold, don’t seem to have the backing of a family. Most of all Riki is respectful of the traditions she was brought up with.
We actually had the same song about Columbus in 1492. Lol. Btw, Riki, I lived right on top of your brother and you used to come babysit or maybe just to hang out sometimes and I remember you holding this giant guitar case. You were very sweet even then.
What a character, a true "Funny Girl". How delightful Riki Rose is with her closet full of bright colors and patterns and her beautiful voice. Besides the voice, her personality is so vibrant-so full of confidence, honesty, humor. Listening to Riki reminds me of what I imagine the people were like who gave birth to Broadway and Hollywood. What a wonderful interview, so delightful to hear you both reminisce and laugh together. Riki Rose is a very good singer using her lower register. Has she listened to recordings of Karen Carpenter? Karen achieved great success and fame by singing in her lower register, evidently her higher range was nothing special. But that lower range, wow!

But she'd have to move to Sydney. I listen to her and I think, no I feel, I want to know more. She's a delight and I hope her tateh has come to terms with the gift from Heaven she is.

He was born in a small village, Kozhan Gorodok, Russian Empire, and raised in a nearby village, Davyd-Haradok, Belarus (then Poland). He survived the Holocaust in Samarkand, Soviet Union. Later, he moved to Williamsburg, Brooklyn, New York."

Riki, I am of Jewish descent in Hungary. I sang a lot and attended a choir school. I've always been very interested in Yiddish music and have been searching for a female performer (in my voice range too). I never found one-until now. @@qwaleteeI'm wondering what time period also because I'm born and raised in Newark and I don't recall it ever having any type of Jewish population, I recall it being mostly Italian... 🤔 Now it is mostly black and Hispanic so idk when the Jewish transition occurred but it has to be only in the last 10 years or less. I never saw a real Jewish person a day in my life until I moved to NY and that was only 14 years ago.

During one of Frieda’s previous episodes (about Hasidic girls) I wrote in the comments that over 50 years ago when I was 14 or 15 I had a “flirtation” with a Hasidic Satmar girl in Williamsburg. For a few months her friends and my friends (Catholic boys) would chat after they got out of school. She and I would step away to talk privately leaving the other two boys and two girls a few feet away. (Soooo bad. LOL). She was very pretty and precocious. She was as interested in my life as I was in hers. It lasted a short period of time but it was cute. The commenters said it would have been impossible and that there was no way such a rebellious and adventurous Hasidic girl could exist. But, as a teenager, Riki seems to have been such a rebellious girl. I’m convinced more than ever that this memory is real and not a figment of my imagination. LOL
People can leave such weird comments. Sounds like a totally believable story to me! Sometimes people buy into a very binary view: they're all saints or all sinners. We're humans, so some people go hard at the rules, others are always dreaming of ways to break them. I hope you cherish your lovely memories.

I can imagine. It's hard to sum up this channel succinctly. If I was explaining your channel to someone who'd never seen it before, I'd struggle, ha! I'd want to note you left the Hasidic community, but still care deeply about it. Like every other community, it has advantages and disadvantages, universally enriching cultural practices and potentially damaging ones. You want to share what makes it unique and highlight its many beautiful characteristics and traditions, while still exploring the objectively correct, understandable reasons you left. See? Clear as mud, ha!

Got goosebumps listening to Riki sing. Such a talent! As a child, my biggest fear was the return of Jesus and it was so interesting to hear that I’m not alone in that. I always felt guilty because I was supposed to be happy about that but I wanted to get to live my life. Seems that too is something Judaism and Catholicism have in common. 😂
I really enjoyed this video so much! Thank you. The music. Rikki's beautiful singing. The memories! Although I grew up in more open minded Boro Park, I literally had many of the same experiences... Including the exposure to Taylor Swift & Hannah Montana in the 99 cents store and Telco. And I hung around a while too.... and knew so many of the hot sings from there😅. A beautiful interview. One difference is that Riki seems to have the support of her sisters and her mother. Many of the religious who leave the fold, don’t seem to have the backing of a family. Most of all Riki is respectful of the traditions she was brought up with.

What a character, a true "Funny Girl". How delightful Riki Rose is with her closet full of bright colors and patterns and her beautiful voice. Besides the voice, her personality is so vibrant-so full of confidence, honesty, humor. Listening to Riki reminds me of what I imagine the people were like who gave birth to Broadway and Hollywood. Riki Rose is a very good singer using her lower register. Has she listened to recordings of Karen Carpenter? Karen achieved great success and fame by singing in her lower register, evidently her higher range was nothing special. But that lower range, wow!
You’ve intrigued me of Karen Carpenter.
It’s great to have the many diverse backgrounds and cultures in the Jewish community and bringing all the good from each of them! How I wish the great Rabbis of our generation could just get together to become more united on all the topics that truly matter!

Sydney is a long way from New York. I have a sticker on my fridge: Australia, what a schlep! But I'm just now learning about the great Hungarian presence there, which I didn't realize before.

When Yom-Tov Ehrlich sang his own songs, it was often hard for Satmars to understand his different Yiddish dialect. Only later were new recordings made by others using the pronunciation of the community.
"Rabbi Yom-Tov Ehrlich (Hebrew: יום-טוב עהרליך) (1914-1990) was a renowned Hasidic musician, composer, lyricist, recording artist, and popular entertainer known for his popular Yiddish music albums. He was born in a small village, Kozhan Gorodok, Russian Empire, and raised in a nearby village, Davyd-Haradok, Belarus (then Poland). He survived the Holocaust in Samarkand, Soviet Union. Later, he moved to Williamsburg, Brooklyn, New York."

Riki, I am of Jewish descent in Hungary. I sang a lot and attended a choir school. I've always been very interested in Yiddish music and have been searching for a female performer (in my voice range too). I never found one-until now. And now, I want an album! :D

What a stunning voice that Riki has! She reminds me of a Yiddish version of Regina Spektor! Although the second song reminds me of Portuguese fado - a lament. It is hauntingly beautiful. Riki is incredibly talented.
