One of our hamsters, Flash was a very large Syrian male, to the point we got a lot of people asking if he was a guinea pig lol. He was almost 9 inches long and absolutely beautiful bless his heart, he was very chilled for a hamster and loved having snuggles
Totally agree with pretty much everything you listed in the video. Currently I have 8 guinea pigs and I also had 3 hamsters in the past and it's really weird that people confuse them, they are so obviously different animals with different needs, diets and absolutely need different enclosures! You should do a video where you make hamster cages on a budget. It would be good for people who only want to spend a certain amount of money on a cage but want to get the best toys and hideouts possible. BTW, im getting a hamster in a few weeks and your videos have helped me get the stuff I need and helped me know what to expect, thank you so much!

Also the clips you added are amazing! I tend to see clips of guinea pigs even on animal shows that have piggies alone in terribly small spaces. I always get upset when people stick pigs into tiny tales enclosures

But it isn't like their size are similiar.... the bigger one is GP, thr kinda smaller one is a syrian hamster, the even smaller one is a dwarf hamster. Or roborovski What if one mistakes a stripey house cat for a grown ass tiger that'd be funny

dude i had to chase my guinea pig before cuz i let him on the floor and i smashed the window and my entire arm was bleeding, his name was chase which was funny, but he passed a year ago :(
A year ago, my neighbor came seeking advice on guinea pigs because she knows I have HAMSTERS . I told her almost the same info in this video...just because over 2 years ago I wanted guineapigs or hamsters and did some prior research. I decided for hamsters because GP need to be in groups, basically only eat hay (expensive and hard to find where I live) and have longer life spans and if one dies I would have to replace it ASAP to have the other happy...and it felt like a never ending circle. Unluckily for her guinea pigs, she only fed them bread and apples and put them in a fish tank with discarded pine wood chips from a carpenter... I told her a million times not to because it was dangerous and toxic...I even gave her printed information and a list of exotic vets around... Like 2 weeks later her male GP bloated she took him to the cheapest dog vet around , he gave him human cold medication (the gp was not even coughing nor had he wet eyes/nose) this killed him within an hour. She got a female and exactly the same happened to her. There is a reason why GP or any kond of pet should stick to their diets ... feeding only apples gives too much water, sugar (risk of diabetes) and ...ahhh the vet explained me they just can't digest it well and it ferments in a bad way in their digestive system, bloat them and kill them and of course they should not get human cold medication. Thats why they should eat 80% hay, but this woman seems to be really stingy . Poor GP Well... if some reads my long text, please remember to do your research before getting your pet and give them the BEST care, because they are part of your family and they deserve it. And save lots of money for the exotic vet , avoid dog vets

Would love to hear more about verbal hamsters because I do t think it’s talked about much. My hamster Zeus (RIP) was very vocal and made chirping noises like a little bird for the first half of his life. He was especially noisy when exploring new things. But he got quieter and quieter as he became an adult and then old man. I never knew they could be vocal and it freaked me out at first- so if you can share more about it, please do! 💕

I got a hamster on Wednesday, he is living in a ikea detolf and loving it! His name is wasabi and he is a Russian campels dwarf hamster (most likely a hybrid) he is just starting to burrow! He is not aggressive, he actually loves climbing into my hand and isn’t scared! This is my first hamster and I would say I got pretty lucky.
Also one difference are their molar teeth hamster molars are rooted and do not grow,also they are bunodont (like round,adapted to a varied diet) and guinea pig have hypsodont and unrooted molars that do grows,also they are lophodont (completely flat,adapted to a strict herbivore diet)
I’ve owned all 3 in my lifetime, in my opinion, Guinea pigs are the best little animals. Their noises alone and sweet temperaments make them an awesome pet to have.
Yes, hamster will escape whenever wants to - once Ive had a hamster baby/pup that has managed to find a weaker point of bars, which looked solid... So yeah...
Hello Victoria, I just wanted to thank you for teaching me all about hamsters! I’ve never owned a pet, I ride horses but never fortunate enough to own one so I have always wanted a small pet (eg hamster or guinea pig) my mum doesn’t really like animals so I wasn’t allowed a pet for years until I asked my parents one day for a hamster. They said no, but I was expecting this, so I made a PowerPoint presentation and it actually worked! Since then I have been teaching my parents about correct hamster care and even made a cage today! I linked two storage bins together (about 700sq inches) wouldn’t recommend takes so much time and it would be easier to make a wooden one, but anywho we made it and it’s now stable in my room with bedding in and toys! All I need now is an 11 inch wheel, sand bath and food! Thank you Tori, you made this happen ❤️ Edit: also I think what also convinced my mum was I took my class hamster home for two weeks and she saw how easy it was for me to look after it :)

@@kittenmimi5326 yeah… it seems to be doing ok, it’s in a 350sq inch cage which I don’t agree with but I’m to scared to ask my teacher to change it. It does lowkey stress me out when other children try to temp her out of her nest while she is sleeping. Like just let her sleep!! She also has a flying saucer wheel which isn’t great for her back and I even saw her be thrown off it when she was at my house! My teacher has had other hamsters before so I don’t want to just become the know it all that says everything is wrong :(
My local animal shelter(adoption shelter) just took in about 31 guinea pigs who were living on shoe boxes .it breaks my heart to see them suffer. They also have many dogs and cats and i hope i can adopt one of them when i am ready for it

I had guinea pigs once had 4 they were so sweet and loving, although there cages smelled so bad. Also I had the all living things cage size large ( 2 pigs in each )and then I found out I was allergic to them and then we went to pet expo and surrendered them. On the chewy app under small animals they used to have a photo of a hamster for the Guinea pig section I’m so glad they changed it but they still have A gerbil photo for the mouse section 🤦♀️

Oh. They look very different to me so I never confuse the two. It was fun to learn a little more of the two as a mouse owner. Hamsters are illegal here where I live but not guinea pigs. My brother owned two guinea pigs one time. They were really cute and made a lot of these noises, but they never liked me lol.

I got a hamster and It was between guinea pigs , I done my research for the hamster so I got the hamster although although wish I looked into guinea pigs as now I think guinea pigs as I think they would fit my lifestyles alot better so I hope to get guinea pigs some time in the next year !

I just saw Lenny wiggle his nose. He's very cute when he moves his nose and whiskers. The brown guinea pig looked cute wiggling its nose while getting its hair brushed. I noticed that rabbits and rodents of different species do wiggle their noses and whiskers and this is so cute.

Hi, I have a question. My hamster Barney has never been much of a vocal hamster, but for the last few months he has been making squeaking noises a few minutes after he wakes up. I was just wondering if this is normal, as none of my other hamsters have ever done it, or if he might be trying to tell me that something is wrong. ❤️🐹
It depends on the situation I think. I’m guessing everything else is fine and there hasn’t been a change like in the environment. Maybe you can share this exact information on hamster forums hamster hideout and hamster central. It could be sign to see a vet that’s qualified to treat hamsters, a sign that he is stressed/distressed or just doing it for the sake of it / a nightmare but if it’s only the last few months idk. Also theorise they may be more confident to do it once they’ve settled and just feel like it.
hmmm.... If it's only happening around when he wakes up, it's likely not anything to be too concerned about. Does it happen every day? If it's not daily, it could be something like nightmares or if you're doing something in the room his cage is in, he could be expressing displeasure at being woken up/ disturbed. Beyond the squeaking, is his behaviour and actions the same? Things like lower activity levels, spending more time sleeping, eating/drinking less, constipation or diarrhoea and weight loss can indicate something else is wrong. If anything listed above or other concerns show up, it would be a good idea to take him to the vet.

I got my first hamster in 2019 who had a small cage :( I did a lot more research and told my mum she didnt see the point until i showed her ur videos and she finally said i could upgrade my cage! I got him an alaska cage he was so much happier :) All thanks to you i have 3 hamsters right now adopting another tmr! They all have proper care so tysm for all the help! X

Buddy was struggling to eat, we took them to the vet and the vet gave me 2 options: put them down or see them suffer, since I had only had buddy since January I didn’t want to but I decided it was for he best as I didn’t want to see a pet in my care suffer, Victoria thank you so much for educating me on hamster because if I didn’t find this channel I would be lost! I know for you, it must be like "what? How can anybody think these 2 are alike?" But for somebody that knows nothing about a hamster or guinea pig, it's very understandable. Thank you for the breakdown explanation of the differences between the two. Now we are more knowledgeable thanks to you taking the time to educate us.
But it isn't like their size are similiar.... the bigger one is GP, thr kinda smaller one is a syrian hamster, the even smaller one is a dwarf hamster. Or roborovski

dude i had to chase my guinea pig before cuz i let him on the floor and i smashed the window and my entire arm was bleeding, his name was chase which was funny, but he passed a year ago :(
A year ago, my neighbor came seeking advice on guinea pigs because she knows I have HAMSTERS . I told her almost the same info in this video...just because over 2 years ago I wanted guineapigs or hamsters and did some prior research.
I decided for hamsters because GP need to be in groups, basically only eat hay (expensive and hard to find where I live) and have longer life spans and if one dies I would have to replace it ASAP to have the other happy...and it felt like a never ending circle.
Unluckily for her guinea pigs, she only fed them bread and apples and put them in a fish tank with discarded pine wood chips from a carpenter... I told her a million times not to because it was dangerous and toxic...I even gave her printed information and a list of exotic vets around...
Like 2 weeks later her male GP bloated she took him to the cheapest dog vet around , he gave him human cold medication (the gp was not even coughing nor had he wet eyes/nose) this killed him within an hour. She got a female and exactly the same happened to her.
There is a reason why GP or any kond of pet should stick to their diets ... feeding only apples gives too much water, sugar (risk of diabetes) and ...ahhh the vet explained me they just can't digest it well and it ferments in a bad way in their digestive system, bloat them and kill them and of course they should not get human cold medication.
Thats why they should eat 80% hay, but this woman seems to be really stingy . Poor GP
Well... if some reads my long text, please remember to do your research before getting your pet and give them the BEST care, because they are part of your family and they deserve it. And save lots of money for the exotic vet , avoid dog vets

Would love to hear more about verbal hamsters because I do t think it’s talked about much. My hamster Zeus (RIP) was very vocal and made chirping noises like a little bird for the first half of his life. He was especially noisy when exploring new things. But he got quieter and quieter as he became an adult and then old man. I never knew they could be vocal and it freaked me out at first- so if you can share more about it, please do! 💕
I've personally never had a vocal hamster so it's not something I can speak on personally!

I got a hamster on Wednesday, he is living in a ikea detolf and loving it! His name is wasabi and he is a Russian campels dwarf hamster (most likely a hybrid) he is just starting to burrow! He is not aggressive, he actually loves climbing into my hand and isn’t scared! This is my first hamster and I would say I got pretty lucky.

Also one difference are their molar teeth hamster molars are rooted and do not grow,also they are bunodont (like round,adapted to a varied diet) and guinea pig have hypsodont and unrooted molars that do grows,also they are lophodont (completely flat,adapted to a strict herbivore diet)
My husband uses the names interchangeable. I’m like “how?!” Also I’ve had hamsters before so maybe that’s why I know the difference. 🤷🏻♀️
I’ve owned all 3 in my lifetime, in my opinion, Guinea pigs are the best little animals. Their noises alone and sweet temperaments make them an awesome pet to have.

Hello Victoria, I just wanted to thank you for teaching me all about hamsters! I’ve never owned a pet, I ride horses but never fortunate enough to own one so I have always wanted a small pet (eg hamster or guinea pig) my mum doesn’t really like animals so I wasn’t allowed a pet for years until I asked my parents one day for a hamster. They said no, but I was expecting this, so I made a PowerPoint presentation and it actually worked! Since then I have been teaching my parents about correct hamster care and even made a cage today! I linked two storage bins together (about 700sq inches) wouldn’t recommend takes so much time and it would be easier to make a wooden one, but anywho we made it and it’s now stable in my room with bedding in and toys! All I need now is an 11 inch wheel, sand bath and food! Thank you Tori, you made this happen ❤️
Edit: also I think what also convinced my mum was I took my class hamster home for two weeks and she saw how easy it was for me to look after it :)

@@kittenmimi5326 yeah… it seems to be doing ok, it’s in a 350sq inch cage which I don’t agree with but I’m to scared to ask my teacher to change it. It does lowkey stress me out when other children try to temp her out of her nest while she is sleeping. Like just let her sleep!! She also has a flying saucer wheel which isn’t great for her back and I even saw her be thrown off it when she was at my house! My teacher has had other hamsters before so I don’t want to just become the know it all that says everything is wrong :(
My local animal shelter(adoption shelter) just took in about 31 guinea pigs who were living on shoe boxes .it breaks my heart to see them suffer. They also have many dogs and cats and i hope i can adopt one of them when i am ready for it
This video was soo helpful, thank you Victoria! Quick question, my Syrian hamster is 1.5 years old and does not usually squeak, scream, ect. However my hamster has been recently screaming for no reason while in his wooden house (aka his bed) and we bring him out to see what’s wrong but nothing seems to have changed. Do you know what this could been and/or how to react? 💕
Thanks for watching! Hamsters are capable of having nightmares/dreams and sometimes that can cause them to twitch or squeak or scream in their sleep!

I had guinea pigs once had 4 they were so sweet and loving, although there cages smelled so bad. Also I had the all living things cage size large ( 2 pigs in each )and then I found out I was allergic to them and then we went to pet expo and surrendered them. I still miss them even though I only had them less then a. Year I also found out after I didn’t have them that the cages were to small :(

On the chewy app under small animals they used to have a photo of a hamster for the Guinea pig section I’m so glad they changed it but they still have A gerbil photo for the mouse section 🤦♀️
We also use fleece for guinea pigs cause it provides more warmth and lots of paper bedding and things can cause respiratory infections

I got a hamster and It was between guinea pigs , I done my research for the hamster so I got the hamster although although wish I looked into guinea pigs as now I think guinea pigs as I think they would fit my lifestyles alot better so I hope to get guinea pigs some time in the next year !

I just saw Lenny wiggle his nose. He's very cute when he moves his nose and whiskers. The brown guinea pig looked cute wiggling its nose while getting its hair brushed. I noticed that rabbits and rodents of different species do wiggle their noses and whiskers and this is so cute.

Hi, I have a question. My hamster Barney has never been much of a vocal hamster, but for the last few months he has been making squeaking noises a few minutes after he wakes up. I was just wondering if this is normal, as none of my other hamsters have ever done it, or if he might be trying to tell me that something is wrong. ❤️🐹
It depends on the situation I think. I’m guessing everything else is fine and there hasn’t been a change like in the environment. Maybe you can share this exact information on hamster forums hamster hideout and hamster central. It could be sign to see a vet that’s qualified to treat hamsters, a sign that he is stressed/distressed or just doing it for the sake of it
/ a nightmare but if it’s only the last few months idk. Also theorise they may be more confident to do it once they’ve settled and just feel like it.
Mm is it possible to go to a vet just to make sure? He's probably fine but ya never know
hmmm.... If it's only happening around when he wakes up, it's likely not anything to be too concerned about. Does it happen every day? If it's not daily, it could be something like nightmares or if you're doing something in the room his cage is in, he could be expressing displeasure at being woken up/ disturbed. Beyond the squeaking, is his behaviour and actions the same? Things like lower activity levels, spending more time sleeping, eating/drinking less, constipation or diarrhoea and weight loss can indicate something else is wrong. If anything listed above or other concerns show up, it would be a good idea to take him to the vet.

I just want to say thank you so much for what you do! I got my first hamster in 2019 who had a small cage :( I did a lot more research and told my mum she didnt see the point until i showed her ur videos and she finally said i could upgrade my cage! I got him an alaska cage he was so much happier :) All thanks to you i have 3 hamsters right now adopting another tmr! They all have proper care so tysm for all the help! X

Hi, I’m gonna write this comment again because I used the wrong pronouns the last time.
Buddy was struggling to eat, we took them to the vet and the vet gave me 2 options: put them down or see them suffer, since I had only had buddy since January I didn’t want to but I decided it was for he best as I didn’t want to see a pet in my care suffer, Victoria thank you so much for educating me on hamster because if I didn’t find this channel I would be lost!
