    The wheel actually did work and was supposed to work. This building was intended for a new international institute of technology in early 2010s but a new government never finished the work because it was started by the previous one. After being there untouched for a few years they finally sold the building. My engineering lecturer has ridden with the wheel with other very few guys.

    Also, while you're in Adjara, you should visit Petra castle and Asparos (Gonio) castle. If you want to see what Georgia has to offer, other than post-Soviet and modern monstrocities. Our Ancient culture is much more fascinating, than Soviet blocks, that you can see in dozens of countries.
    p.s. if you decide to go in rural areas (which are amazing, btw) and someone tells you about waterfall, just don't. They always mean makhuntseti waterfall that is very cringe. Go to Mirveti waterfall, where while waterfall itself far from impressive, the surrounding forrest is something out of fantasy. And Gvara castle nearby is cool too.

      @@Kzummo yup. It's sad that for post-Soviet people it's only interesting to see our take on USSR, however we have 2+ millenias of history before USSR, which, sadly, is often overlooked. But being in places, that humans built 1-2 thousand years ago, see the remnants of their deeds and almost feel their silent presence - is a feeling you can't beat. For me it's much more surreal, since those were my ancestors, people, whose blood is probably in me, and it makes me think how do i compare to them, will my deeds be carved in history, as their? Or will i simply vanish, with no trace? Something to think and meditate about in those places.

    That hotel which u showed earlier, was supposed to be a University. Batumi Technological University specifically. The concept of "Reading a book while on the wheel" was of Mikheil Saakashvili, the previous President. He built it right before his government changed. So, unfortunately the new government did not move forward with this idea of University over this building and now it is a ... hotel as i see :d

    6:32 it's a tuned mass damper. It's basically a huge weight fitted to a lot of very tall buildings that might sway during strong wind or during earthquakes etc. The weight can also swing about, counteracting the force, damping out frequencies that might do structural damage. So it stabilizes the building.

      To me it looks like it should have had been zoned less and mixed better. Like don't just plop high rises one right next to the other, just space them out, plop down lil gardens and shit, leave an odd traditional building down there. But i also like variety in general.
      But then i'm speaking as a random person who's not a Georgian, just looking from outside in, not having the history of the place be part of my life, just seeing how it turned out. The cities i grew up in, there's some (most) traditional bits, i'd throw a bloody fit if they razed them for a skyscraper. So i get you lot. I also think skyscrapers shouldn't be very tall, like maybe up to maybe 20 floors tops, but just super slender, so they don't just make a lot of shadow or occlusion around themselves, and have barely any usable space, just break up the skyline just that little bit. They can still be prestige signs for the businesses that occupy them. My fave skyscraper worldwide has to be the HVB Tower, but it could have been a little slimmer, would have been an improvement honestly.

    • @verified_tinker1818
      @verified_tinker1818 2 роки тому +1

      @@SianaGearz No, I completely agree (as a Georgian). I don't mind the occasional "futuristic" skyscraper, so long as it's placed right and complements the old city. The way the city's laid out now, the taller buildings block the smaller ones, ruin views, and as the taxi driver said, ruin the climate, too.
      And don't even get me started on the hotels. They're propping up left and right with no concern as to what they're doing to the city. That's a bubble I expect to burst, especially if and when the influx of Russians post-Ukraine-war leave. They're the main reason the city's so crowded this year, and the new hotels that are built in response will be left empty and derelict.

The nearest eastern euro store nearby is Bulgarian, and it's quite a ways out of the way, odds of them stocking that aren't looking too great either, but i might just check. If there was a Polish one nearby, it would be full of Kvass. The nearest mainstream supermarket is actually run by a Bosnian guy i think, should chat him up, maybe he can get us some Ukrainian Kvass in here, he's been pretty proactive at getting in Ukrainian food brands this year, but that can be a little tough for companies which don't have a subsidiary within EU to certify the stuff.
