  • Here's more (mostly) useless trivia, this time about the 1969 heist classic, The Italian Job. My favorite nuggets... I had no idea how many ways The Italian Job has impacted pop culture, from books to music and even to video games. Let's blow the bloody doors off of this one!

    I saw this film when I was about six years old, in the theater. I loved it, then I grew up but the movie stayed with me, or at least bits and pieces did. I especially remember the bringing the minis up the ramp into the bus and when they threw them back out. I also remembered a scene where someone, and by then I had forgotten the actors, threw a bicycle into an electrical substation and knocked out the power. Beyond that I knew so little. And I couldn't find out any more and I searched through Leonard Maltin's annual guide for years trying to find this movie, I had no name for it, and I honestly thought Dean Jones was in it(because in 1969 when I saw it I was six, every movie I saw, mostly Disney, had Dean Jones in it). Jump ahead to 1998 and finally by putting in a few elements I remember into IMDB I found it. I ran right out and found a VHS of it at a local video store and since then I have watched it periodically, updating to DVD when I could. I love this feature, which has told me so much more about a movie I have loved for many years. Thank you.

      I’d recommend watching it with the director’s commentary on the DVD. Apparently Peter Collinson was the one waving the Minis up the ramp because they were told it was too dangerous and nobody was allowed to, so he just did it anyway

    the land rover tow truck was an actual tow truck which belonged to the father of the actor who plays the character "dominic" in the film, the landrover was his fathers garage buisness tow vehicle which was enhanced by the prop guys with mesh window covers and jerrycans, otherwise it was as used by the garage...it was last uk road registered in 1992.....he also owned the jaguars, the thames 400e crewbus and the ambassadors daimler...the alfa police car does not appear in the sewer scene as it was filmed in the uk..look carefully in the film and one can see the police car chasing the minis in the sewer has three grille mounted spotlamps....its a mini with a police light on the roof!!

  • @franl155
    @franl155 2 роки тому +4

    Somehow I can't imagine Robert Redford saying "You're only supposed to blow the bloody doors off!"
    I didn't work out the weight of the gold, but if they stole half a ton and divided it between three cars, then each would have to carry 1/6th of a ton - those cars should have stood up on their rear ends during the rooftop jump.
    Apparently Collinson did the "waving the cars aboard the bus" becaues no stuntman would take it on, thinking it too dangerous.
    Ah, yes, Crime Does Not Pay. The first film I ever saw where they get away with it was Kelly's Heroes; right up to the last second I was waiting for something to go wrong, because something always did, and then the credits started rolling and it was a shock to realise that they DID get away with it.

And the Aston as you say didn't go over the edge, it was substituted with an equally lovely Lancia Flaminia two-door convertible in very similar colours - that should have annoyed the Italian classic car fraternity...Long live Michael Caine!

    I was wondering a while back, how come I kept humming Days like these from the intro? I hadn't seen The Italian Job for ages or even thought about it. Went on for weeks, then one afternoon I went for a pint in my local pub. I heard that theme tune. The one armed bandit slot machine was Italian job based, had all the lines from the film I knew, but today nobody was in the pub and when nobody was playing the machine it quietly kicked into that theme song. You made my day saying those amazing cars survived, it's always depressed me to think they were destroyed. Micheal Caine was asked bout those cars, he said he hated cars and driving.

    A very good collection of curious facts. However...
    The Mini DID have a differential. All cars (apart from ancient chain-drive monsters) have a differential.
    And... Even back in the day, people who raced and rallied Minis had trouble with the differential. So... It makes sense that a gang of thieves who have been ragging Coopers to practise their moves would have to work on the diffs and gearboxes.

    • @martinkaye6397
      @martinkaye6397 Рік тому

      the mini differentials were at the front.

    • @BanjoLuke1
      @BanjoLuke1 Рік тому

      @@martinkaye6397 Indeed... But on the film he doesn't say "rear diff". That is only a distinction when 4wd was used.... and vehicles had a front and a rear diff.... and sometimes a centre diff. But in the film he only says "differential". Although the mechanic seems to be sliding under from the rear of the car, once a Mini is off the ground, that is not a bad place to slide on from. It is a very, very small motor car.

  • @assessor1276
    @assessor1276 20 днів тому +1

    Sorry, but Minis - and ALL cars in fact - certainly does have a differential. This is the component that enables the drive wheels to turn at different speeds while cornering. In the Mini, the “diff” is housed inside the front-mounted transaxle and not, as you stated, in the middle of a rear axle.

    the license plates on the minis were genuine mini license plates, the links to the letters as claimed in this video are an urban myth.....none of the original movie minis exist, tho all their license plates were held on retention and sold at an auction in the early 2000s in the UK, all the movie license plates, once licensed to original minis, are now on replica italian job minis.,the bus survived the movie and was sold to a small bus company in scotland in the 1970s who welded the back doors together and reused the vehicle as a school bus until it was scrapped in the 1980s.., the pakistani ambassadors car also doubles for HMP1 the prison transport of mr bridger.. when the e type gets crushed, caine mouths the words "youve just lost him his no claims bonous", but, it was overdubbed for the americans to "youve just lost him his insurance bonous".

    The winning solution - with the smashed windows and ballast rocks etc. - is actually pretty good, apart from one element: it's not that easy to "drain" the fuel tank of a bus unless you really know what you are doing. It involves either siphoning it off (time-consuming and disgusting) or drilling holes in the right places (time-consuming and involves equipment).
    Apart from that, jolly good.

    You mention the rear differential as being a problem in the script/movie as the cars were fwd. But even in the clip you've included the character says 'rossa is having trouble with his differential'. You even quote them as such. No one says 'rear'. Yet your criticism is that fwd cars don't have a rear differential, which they don't. But they *DO* have a differential at the front. So the script makes perfect sense.
    The script only has a problem if you say *rear* diff, but as no one does I don't understand why you raise it like there is a problem.

    So for the gold part, you don’t want to be calculating the weight of the gold by the price of it during 1969, yeah ok $4m is a nice figure but look at the picture. Gold bars are a standard weight and size, and they weight 14kg or approx 28 pounds each. Now have a look at the picture and work out how many bars you can see. I’m pretty certain that amount of gold would weight more than the figure you’ve given.

    And Hazel Collinson worked a few desks down from me In the office I worked at in the late 90s. I spoke to her a few times but never knew who she was until years later when an ex-colleague told me. Now I remember her face of course.
    And they filmed in Turin because Turin is a ‘factory’ town, Fiat pumps millions into the city and they were happy for the production to occur there because of the publicity.
    And the ‘machina’ story is well documented to be a misunderstanding
    This commentary is so full of holes.
