Shout out to whichever patron requested this reaction! This song was my introduction to Poets of the Fall back while I was still in high school, almost 10 years ago, and they’ve been among my favorite bands ever since. Dave, if you enjoyed this, I’d also recommend taking a look at their Alexander Theater Sessions version of this song. Also, just to let you know, the band is from Finland.
ditto... this song is also one of my favorite songs and the video Dave showed at the bottom on left hand side corner, is actually the original video i remember seeing it when i was in my 12th grade..... and also i still sing this song as one of my karaoke/ videoke (since some people think that the real "karaoke" is when you sing a particular song without the words shown on the screen, while others think that videoke is the same thing except that you get to see the words of the song that you are singing, on the screen...... but well, to me, personally, Karaoke and Videoke is just one and the same.... but i still thought that i would put this in the comment because i always though that the stuff i sang with my cousins always Karaoke and that karaoke always had words on screen, until i say one comment from an old timer who actually just said "THIS IS NOT WHAT YOU CALL KARAOKE! KARAOKE IS SUNG BY HEART" )...
To me the carnival in this song symbolises an illusion, fake facades, a superficial life. And the singer is yearning for a true meaningful relationship instead. Thanks for great intelligent reactions, subbed after watching your Home Free Sea Shanty Medley. 😊
Met them when they were in India and interviewed them and gifted them mementos n they signed stuff for our team. Such amazing human beings Marko and Ollie and their manager were.
Underrated doesn't even begin to describe this band. Since you enjoyed this, yes the rabbit hole is deep but also yes its worth exploring for sure. And yes POTF's videos always have an artistic touch in some way or another to enamour you and draw your attention. This song is old enough, there are multiple interpretations and that's the beauty of music you are allowed to interpret the meaning your way, the way you feel it. Also, they made a few songs from the Alan Wake soundtrack as well which I find so cool.
this band i heard long time ago when i heard late goodbye in radio,i think first that this come usa. this band start that song to them video games journey, late good bye was max payne game, then come music alan wake and now latest game in control. this band have great music videos and singer marko can truly sing amazing live or studio no matter. thanx to great analyze reaction and have great weekend there.
Also at the end of song from that box where Marko is (the singer). Comes out the ticket that has Latin words "Cor Cordis". I think that really ties the whole song together.
What a brilliant reaction to one of my favourite songs. Poets of the Fall have some very interesting lyrics in their entire discography, they certainly live up to their name. If you enjoy good wordplay then might I suggest another track by them called 'The Game' which I honestly think has some of their best lyrics. As for Carnival of Rust, I've always had this association with 'Vanity Fair' from John Bunyan's Pilgrims Progress, possibly because the two names are very similar in meaning. To the best of my knowledge Poets are not in any way a religious band, but when listened to with that perspective, it isn't hard to hear a very cohesive and very different meaning through many of their songs. Thanks for making this video and if you did decide to cover this band again, (and there are so many songs of theirs to choose - I honestly can't say any of them are bad) I would very much be interested in hearing more of your thoughts.
Usually you feed the fire. But a melancholy person won't identify with fire, rather rain. If you choose to get together, it's feeding the rain. Calling one self "a carnival of rust", but still hoping for a companion, having some hope, that's just beautiful in a tragic way.
Loved your reaction! Everything I’ve read about the band indicates that they’re not religious but it’s difficult to ignore all the religious idioms and symbolism present in the song. Plus, at the end, only in the very last line, despite the written lyrics saying “Oh, when the heart is yearning,” he is unmistakably singing “lord, when the heart is yearning.” He annunciates the “L” and the “D” quite clearly.
There's much occult symbolism and images in their lyrics and videos (Tarot cards for eg). Perhaps they are religious but not one of the mainstream religions, not Christian for sure.
This reaction video deserves more views. The most underrated reaction to a perfect song. I love how your thought process organically tries to decipher the truth behind the word play. More power to you, brother!
Hi Dave! The music is of course from these talented musicians but the rather excellent lyrics come from our education where English is the most appreciated( most selected foreign language in our primary school ). On top of that we have two official languages as obligatory( Finnish and Swedish ) and also one more official language Sami language which is different from both those main languages. I'm glad you enjoyed this band! Take care!
Great Song! I really Love them. You are also pretty cool. You have such an "normal" attitude. You are not a overreacting, screaming man-child. I like it. I have seen you did reactions to anime Videos. Let me recommend to you some really great, well made amvs. I ship it and Anime got Talent Also great: John the hellhound an FMA AMV
Love his voice and this song never gets old, as for interpreting the video, it's based on tarot cards there are signs through out, at the start and end it's the moon that's deception
Check out Old Gods of Asgard! It’s the name that the Poets go by in the games Alan Wake and Control, and while it’s definitely a different experience in terms of genre (think 70s/80s metal), it’s definitely something that makes you appreciate them more.
Very interesting! I also interpreted it as a Relationship... but one that ran its course. The obvious stuff out of the way, it seems like the relationship was based upon lust instead of affection and that something like love came "later" - "Beneath the skies of Lust" At least one of the people here is very sad about it and crying most likely Automaton Guy - "Feed the Rain" Looking at the Cello... both Players are quite literally merely going through the motions, no substance, no actual outcome. They just do what is expected/known, without actual contact or thought. The game is about freedom and the Gasmask-Lady absolutely nails the targets, she wanted out. Free herself from this. The Lollipop is more like something She is given, that is meant to be sweet and thoughtful but is ultimately useless and thoughtless to her... she can't eat it, the mask is in the way. The title itself is just that... a Carnival that is old and rusty... something that once meant joy, fun and brought good memories now lies forgotten and uncared for... rusting away, empty... The Person in the Machine, the automaton, I interpret as being imprisoned by something, be it their own mind or something external but they can't do what they think they want. Of course the end makes it very clear... the Lady just leaves, possibly due to a last "big fight", "the world is burning", but Automaton still 'loves' her and is broken up about it. The spirals are commonly about mind stuff, control or hypnosis... so either or both just convinced themselves or "was convinced" by the other that this whole thing was a good idea and the other "guests" are just other perceived suitors.
Not sure if you're still following posts after nine months, but I just watched this video over at Brad & Lex, they just did this song. As far as the video goes, the tarot cards seldom get a good look, but they are subtly telling the story. The singer is a mechanical Fortune Teller, and the flanking panels are the tarot cards he uses to tell fortunes. If you can read the tarot cards, a very simple explanation of the video and the cards appears. I posted this over at Brad & Lex, and I'll post here for you. The Star: This is the default card, it's HIS card, not her card, as it's already there. It represents inspiration or hope, in this case, it's certainly hope. Her first card is... 9 of Swords: Represents anxiety and worry, being unsure, which leads to... The High Priestess: Inner reflection, a choice that needs to be made. She's in the spiraling roller coaster of her mind. 8 of Cups: She's choosing a new path, walking from the Fortune Teller, breaking away, leaving a relationship and moving on. She shatters the plates with the first pitch, breaking away. 9 of Wands: Feeling backed into a corner, facing challenges, resolve. Ace of Wands: A new opportunity, but not exactly an obvious one. She starts walking away. Is the new opportunity something that takes her away from him... or is this opportunity a second chance? The choice is up to her to take it, whichever it proves to be. The Magician: Taking control. She is determined now, walking more steady, it's her life and she's taking control. Strength: Courage or patience to endure. The courage to walk away, or the patience to give him another chance? Ace of Cups: A new (or renewed) love. A very important relationship. She stops... 9 of Swords: Back to anxiety, worry... and she looks back. Will she give him another chance or move on? The Star: He's said his peace, he winds down. It returns to his card. Hope. His final message as she looks back is "Cor Cordis", heart of the heart. He's expressing that she is his heart, and he can't live without her as he winds down.
If you want to do a deep dive to the symbolism of this excellent music video, watch "Carnival Of Rust | Song meaning and symbolism | Music video explained bit by bit" by the channel called Learn A Logic.
When you get a chance look up Alan Wake it's a video game that was made by remedy entertainment these were the guys who made Max payne. There currently working on Alan Wake two. Anyway their last video game Alan Wake one had this band in it they had a few songs from their band in the game that are really good songs. And that most people don't even know exist because they haven't played the video game so look him up when you get a chance. Also look up old gods of Asgard from Alan Wake trust me you'll like them

Yep. That rain he's begging the listener to feed is symbolic of emotions / love.
Met them when they were in India and interviewed them and gifted them mementos n they signed stuff for our team. Such amazing human beings Marko and Ollie and their manager were.

Poets of the fall are an amazing band Iv been following for years, your breakdown of the video and lyrics was brilliant
"Daze" is also very amazing.
Really like their sound. 👍
One of my favourites

There is no L , R or D on that. You are hearing what you want to hear, not what is there.

I can see why you might think it's of a religious nature. It sort of is, and it's called Psychological Alchemy.
