In Europe even if you have an iPhone, you simply use WhatsApp. It's almost rude to initiate a discussion with someone you meet for the first time using Apple messages which may or may not revert to SMS depending on the other person's device. You simply don't do it. The fact that iMessage and FaceTime are considered 'lock-in' cultural phenomena in the US is the most head-scratching thing for us.
What’s weird is that Japan has a surprisingly high iPhone rate and people buy iPhones because they’re iPhones but none of them use FaceTime or iMessage and use some third party apps.
That's normal. Facetime and iMessage is primarily used in US. Like my whole family uses iPhone, talk about 30+ iPhones across ages but all of us uses Whatsapp instead.
@@ayushj6216It's a status symbol there, and the peer pressure of iMessage isn't there because of WeChat, Line, Kakao etc. It's similar in Germany, people don't use iMessage for groups but WhatsApp
It's WILD how much has changed in the 6 days since this was uploaded. Nothing has canceled its iMessage service, and Apple has announced that the iPhone will support RCS next year.
What's wild is that there are still people who buy Apple products, my MacBook is broken and they say it can't be repaired, when the warranty runs out you spend a lot of money on repairs, everything has to be original!!! no wonder their shares are worth 3 trillion dollars!!!!
Thank you for being the only UA-camr on this topic to have an awareness of what happens outside of the US. Also, I live in Japan where iPhones are clearly the dominant smartphone but no one uses iMessage here either - everything is LINE.
It's crazy to me how the US is so deep into the Apple ecosystem and how it's virtually impossible to live with an Android phone because everyone uses the Apple messaging apps (iMessage, FaceTime, etc) In Europe, whether you have an iPhone or an Android, everyone just uses third party apps like whatsapp so you can pick either phone and you'll be fine
And I absolutely hate that, how everyone here in the US uses the iPhone exclusively. It’s so crazy to me. There are SO many interesting/cool phones out there that no one is experiencing because of this weird spell Apple has over so many people. I have an IPhone currently because everyone else does 🤦🏽♂️ But once the S24 Ultra drops, I’m on to that and not coming back
Just to temper the dialog here, I live in the US and happily use a Pixel 8 Pro. I don't have any issues and rarely if ever get blue bubble shade. 49% is a huge market share for one company, but they don't even have a technical majority much less a practical one.
@@DanKaschel How old are you if you don't mind me asking? He said in the video 87% of teenagers use iPhones so obviously if you aren't a teenager 1. there is less pressure and 2. If so many teenagers use iPhones that would mean the percentages for the remaining population flip quite a bit since overall 51% use Android meaning adults favor Androids quite heavily to balance out the stats.
Im from europe and refuse to use whatsapp and is very difficult, people don’t seem to understand why I refuse to use it. I have made a keynotr presentation and send it to them and present it and still they think i am the weird one for insisting on using signal I really really prefer iMessage above whatsap but i have more success getting people to use signal then to get them to use iMessage
As a teenager myself, I constantly have to defend my pixel 7 pro against all my iPhone user friends. And the weird thing is that almost all of them think Samsungs are the only androids. Gotta give props to Apple though, they got them early, and they got them good.
And then gouge them for memory for ever after. That was what drove me away from iPhones a decade ago (though I am still an Apple laptop user) and it looks like they still do it. It felt like an abusive relationship. Like: hot guy, but mean. Not worth having, ultimately.
I have said this a million times before and it bears repeating a million more times, but America absolutely loves to find creative solutions to problems that shouldnt exist in the first place.

Just seems so much easier just to buy an iPhone as android doesn't really offer much different, iPhone and Samsung are so similar these days. I don't know anyone only messaging on imessage so I'm sticking with my Samsung and then giving apple ago because I have been using Samsung phones for 6 years and it feels boring but safe at the same time as I'm so use to how my android functions even though its probably not that different. I might get the iPhone 20 just so I can say to my sister that my iPhone is better 😂 Samsung and Apple are pretty much the same price so its fifty fifty. Enjoying my s23 ultra which isn't much better than my s21 plus but you live and learn I guess. Iphone 6 was the last iPhone I owned and I loved that thing. When I got my Samsung galaxy s8 I was like wow that screen is so damn beautiful and modern. I had iPhone 6 then S8, s10plus, s21plus, s23ultra. So I'm probably due to go back to apple as smasung isn't as unique as they use to be.
As a college student in the US, the analysis of the iPhone effect is right on. Not having an iPhone is almost a sin to our generation. You’ll be left out, intentionally or unintentionally.
What I dont understand is... whats so wrong with that? If you are mentally grown up enough you wont care about being left out because fake friends want you to have blue bubbles. Plus why do people hate on iPhones? Because they are the apex phone the best. Simply put.
I think it's less about hating on them and more that they are so expensive. Not everyone can afford an iPhone. But heck, not everyone wants an iPhone either. But it would be nice to have an android phone that worked as well with iPhones and iPhones work with iPhones
I was in Uni in 2016, we started with maybe 30% of the people with mac. By the time we were in our 4th year there was about 85%+ macs. It is quite insane how that goes. This is in Australia as well, windows laptop is essentially for uni students who had no job and couldn't afford to buy their own mac. I have a sister and she literally bought a refurbished mac in 9th grade for like half the price just to fit in with her classmates. It is insane how much of a chokehold that Apple has on the youth.
I agree with iPhones getting hyped up just cause of the necessary imessage and facetime in the US but macs are a real good product and is leaps ahead the windows competition… apple’s ubiquity with iPhones is not good but macs are completely fine .. offers solid build - chips - support- power everything…
At Swinburne in Melbourne, my class mates had to ditch their Macs because most of the Engineering programs didn't run on MacOS. Depends on what discipline and Uni you are at. But I'd imagine anything that isn't Engineering is Apple central these days.
The thing is, if you're not in a specialized field like Engineering, Architecture, and others that require Laptops with powerful GPU's, then Macbooks are the way to go. In particular, the M1 to M3 series of Macs are easily the best laptops I've ever used for regular daily activities. They have huge bateries--literally lasts 18 hours--and the screen along with the build quality are top notch. For all the wrong things Apple has done, Macbooks are not one of them.
Started a Creative Bachelor degree at the Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences in 2020. Had the money to buy an Apple but after 2 iphones I just didn't fancy to buy a Mac bc of the inferior specs to my HP envy x360 16gb RAM AMD Ryzen 7 with radeon graphics, more bang for buck. 13 inch powerhouse thats a 2 in 1. Sad to see all the "Influencers" and "creatives" in my class with those overpriced and underspeced macbooks. They dont even know whats inside them. Sad to see what social pressure does to people
I am a teen, and use a Pixel 7a, and I have to say, it also depends on where you live. If you are in a city, the iPhone pressure is so freakin high because everyone has their phones out, and constantly looking at what other phones people have and judging you by it. If you live in a more rural place, people could care less about what phone you used. I'm between the two types of places, but nobody I've been around has shown disgust that I'm not using an iPhone, and I will almost always be using a Pixel regardless of what others say...
i think the power of apple is iphone + mac together. teenagers are fickle by nature. if you give them a better camera with a powerful laptop, they will leave the ecosystem. that is a hard battle though. Nothing Chat is a cool strategy, i am not sure if it will work or not because think from a teenager's perspective- maybe he/she is not caught using an iphone because of "nothing chat" for 2-3 days/weeks. what is the end game here? eventually people will know and when they know the humiliation will be same...its just delaying the inevitable....and nothing phone 2 is not cheap also...so why go through the hassle and abuse when you are paying so much....the only solution is to ignore it completely....and honestly nothing is an enthusiast brand...people who buy it know what they are getting into....us market is the literally bossed by apple...if apple really has 87% of the the young masses, then it is better not to fight...let it become 99%...americans love to be special...as much as human nature, people will not like it if everyone use the same phone...that's when you pitch in with something different...till then entering usa market is not necessary....just keep a brief presence...that's it...
@@DemonSlayer-vh8uy Looks like we have an essay-writing Apple fanboy on our hands, who wants to promote domination of Apple devices if I'm not mistaken. Nothing Phone 2 is still cheaper than the cheapest iPhone in the 15 series. It's not good if the entirety of teens in the US to use iMessage, that could lead to privacy invasion and other unencryption problems... Yeah same here. Out in a suburb near farmland. Though I've always been a hardware-first kind of guy so I basically disregard all the ecosystem BS and buy whatever phone has the best modularity or repairability or most versatile camera suite or best tuned speakers or whatever. Sometimes people on the train or on campus even notice and say "cool phone!" 😁😎
I highly doubt people in the city care what kind of phone you have. The only time it’s ever mattered is in friend groups with people wanting to use iMessage within a friend group.
people are too "tribal" or "fanboy". They want to be a part of a brand or want to be normal and but whatever everyone else own. I think most people today can't think for themselves. Especially for teenagers as Marques mention. They want to fit in and be normal. "normal people use iPhone" -- teenagers.
I’ve been on college campuses for 15 years and have watched the % of Mac laptops in the campus coffee shop go from 30% to 80%. No doubt this in part is due to iPhone ownership and loyalty to Mac ecosystem.
Honestly I don't think the Mac ecosystem is having as large of an impact on people purchasing it as the iPhone ecosystem has on people purchasing those. The iPhone is pretty clearly inferior in a lot of ways to competitors, but for Macs, they've genuinely been a competitive product for power and build quality even disregarding the ecosystem. I'm a CS student, and I would've bought a MacBook for college if I could've ensured all of the required engineering/CS software would work on it (it wouldn't so I stuck with windows). But yeah, I don't think the Mac loyalty has anywhere near the ubiquity of the iPhone loyalty.

What's weird is that here in Colombia basically everyone I know owns an iPhone (myself included) yet we all use mainly WhatsApp for texting. Nonetheless there's been a recent trend where at parties or events you're told to keep your AirDrop open so they can send you pictures/promos/info, effectively leaving out every Android user from those messages.
As a Colombian living in the U.S I could say Apple is so overrated, as Marques mentioned before about Blue bubbles vs Green bubbles most people buy Apple to fit in not so much for performance, Android has many more options than IOS.
Its because here in South America it took a while before iPhones became a sizeable portion of the userbase. So Whatsapp usage was alteady culturally established before the iPhone domination.

Main thing that happened is that the US market was stuck in SMS for far longer than the rest of the world, so the iPhone never saw a reason to implement a proprietary protocol until much later, by then WhatsApp, Viber and others had already grown a huge user base in multiple platforms, but in the US Apple basically led them from plain SMS to iMessage seamlessly to the point there are many that don't even realize that iMessage is something completely different under the hood to the old sms 'texting'.
In south america actually.. i come from Paraguay, and I also used to have an iPhone but almost never used the iMessage, I've used Whatsapp even with other iPhone users because we were all in an Whatsapp Group 😅
And security risks they were! This video ages well. Kudos Marques for highlighting potential security issues which materialized in the worst possible way after Nothing launched their "app".
I don’t think people truly realize how much of an outsider teens/kids here in the US feel having an android in an environment where everyone else has an iPhone
@@ARJUN-SSyou’re missing out on long-term support :P -sent from my 2018 iPad Pro which is still on the latest update…actually, I’m even on a developer Beta :)
The fact that persons feel like outsiders to have a different phone than an iPhone shows how insecure they are, and frankly stupid. I had an old S10e for a couple of years and didn't give a shit what others had in their hands, I now have an S23 ultra because the S10e battery went bad, these 'teens' are just dumb.
After seeing this video, I’m really not surprised anymore that the US still relies so much on SMS and MMS if this is the only way to communicate with iPhone users from an Android phone. For me, it’s very common to have multiple messenger apps installed, but even here in Europe, many people are not willing to use something other than WhatsApp 😂
Here’s the thing though, for people who’ve used iMessage, other apps are just plain inferior. iMessage is ridiculously feature packed compared to WhatsApp, Messenger, etc. it’s a shame only iPhone users get to use it
its a weird topic because right now EU is investigating whether they should designate iMessage as a gatekeeper service and thus open it up to competitors, what that means im not sure... could make iMessage downloadable on other app stores or make apple integrate RCS, either way this is an interesting time we are living in, and next 6-12 months will be spicy because apple is already working on side loading for EU users and should include it by law until march/april at the latest sooo yeah
Question: Why should it be declared as a gatekeeper app? Are companies/groups no longer allowed to make exclusive features to their customers/members? If they call it gatekeeping wouldn't that set a precedent? Genuinely curious, since on one hand I don't like Apple all too much myself but I have also heard that the message and video services are just very good. I strongly dislike the European Union but the switch to USB-C was welcome. I don't exactly want to support the Corporate Juggernauts Apple, but then again the Multinational Governing Body EU is awful too.
@@AcidifiedMammoth Because on one hand they own iMessage, but on the other hand they do not support RCS, which is basically universal iMessage. They are intentionally crippling the messaging app when messaging non-iPhone users, which is extremely anti-consumer and should be regulated.
@@AcidifiedMammoth Serious question: What's wrong with a multinational governing body like the EU when it comes to protection of customers and preservation of the enviroment? The EU is reason why our food is healthier and very affordable, why our air is clean and our water is safe to drink without hesitation. How are profit orientated organisations better in any way possible than govermental, non-profit organisations when it comes to preservation and protection??? The worst thing that could possible happening is corruption which then would mean that the interest of the profit orientated organisation in the end wins, so the worst thing possible to happen would be the status quo of not having these institution at all. Companies are allowed to make exclusive features to their customers but not if they have a quasi monopoly because that would expand their mopnopoly which is always bad for the customer and the market.
Great video, tackling a real anti-trust issue. I have a teenage daughter who switched to a cheaper, better Android phone from an iPhone X. She's been on Android for just 2 years but wants to switch back because all her friends are on iPhones and she can't deal with the exclusion anymore. A sad state of affairs.
Cheaper better android? Bro eBay. Get a iPhone 14 pro max for the same price as your cheaper android. It’s faster, safer, more secure, and a higher quality phone.
have her get beeper, it's similar and you can do imessage on android, I use that as a teenager, otherwise she can probably trade it for a good value with a carier

@@Tetrathegod actually no, well you're not entirely wrong. A lot of people buy iPhones on something called "No cost EMI" where they get an initial loan to purchase the device and basically pay back the bank without interest over the next 6 months. It's both, a blessing and a curse.
@@yogensachdev That's also how many people buy their iPhones from phone carriers in the US. They are also technically financing but from a carrier, not a bank. As for Nothing, the Asian markets are extremely competitive with numerous brands selling at all kinds of price points. Competing on price for them is a task, wonder how the bumped up Phone 2 did in Asian markets compared to the Phone 1. Not necessarily, there are some high value, underserviced Asian markets. Japan for example, barely have any Android present, iPhone is dominating but people don't really into iMessage that much, and you don't have major brands like Samsung or Chinese to compete with either (the biggest Android leader by far is the Pixel, which shouldn't be too hard to compete.)

Well, tbf, I am not a young teenager but I'm still in my 20s, still "Genz" enough. I only heard about these things about "Android getting excluded" online but I have never seen or heard about it in real life. Maybe because I live in Asia so it's different here. If anything, I only saw more Apple users getting excluded and insulted nowadays for owning one. Like I recently switched to Apple eco, and I couldn't even count the number of times people online have called me an iSheep because I only said i liked my Apple devices on Facebook or UA-cam. 💀
Here in Ecuador (probably also Latin America as a whole), WhatsApp is the go to app even if you do have an iPhone. iPhones are viewed as a “rich person’s phone” because if you were to buy a current mode one here (even sometimes a previous model) it would cost almost double what it costs in the states so having one makes it seem like you have money but that’s not always the case. I like iPhones, I have one myself, but it sounds pretty wacky to get one just because of iMessage or FaceTime when there’s WhatsApp, signal, telegram, and more to take care of those things.
Here in Brazil iPhones are also viewed as a rich person phone, but I would this mindset is slowly ending, since a lot of people even joke on iPhone users for having a iPhone (since most of them have ancient iPhones) Although a lot of people uses Messenger or Instagram DMs, Whatsapp still the way to go and the most dominant app.
@@MrSandChess the newer ones? Because here the older iPhones are way more expensive than the older Galaxies, and newer iPhones are most of the times way more expensive while Galaxy Ss are also expensive but not as much as iPhones (at least it's the case with the S23 Ultra and iPhone 15 Pro Max)
I always loved my android phone, but finally switched to apple 2 years ago, mainly for iMessage. I was often excluded from group chats because all my college friends had iPhones and wanted an iPhone group chat, and would rely on a friend relaying information to me. I have enjoyed experiencing the apple ecosystem, but would love the option to switch back to android at some point. Blindly signing in with my Apple ID seems a tad sketch, and would love if they offered an option to self host, but I am very excited for this development and hope that progress continues to be made
You can if you have a Mac at home using airmessage. I use my Mac mini as a server and just log in on my android devices to get a lot of the same experience
While this situation sounds absolutely crazy to a non-American, I had the exact same thought. I have and will always have an android phone, but I got an iPad. Why isn't there simply a message forwarding app that pushes your messages or media to the iPad to send in iMessage and vice versa.

But after using it for almost a year now, I was seriously considering switching back to Android phone. Well, this just made the decision so much easier!
You said that discussing why Apple should stop using unencrypted SMS for iPhone non-iPhone message traffic is another story for another day. Apple needs to be called out for their hypocrisy on this.
MKBHD won't badmouth apple, it's too risky and he can't afford to be blacklisted for sake of his youtube channel. This is the reason a lot of UA-camrs who have a large audience are terrified of talking shit let alone being frank when it comes to Apple products.

In Asia, I notice iPhone users don't use much of iMessage. People use different communication apps to chat with friends in different countries. To be honest, to echo what the top comments are saying, it's the same in Thailand. Most Thai people use the LINE messaging app (from Japan), and barely ever use iMessage. My Thai family that live in Thailand say it's because LINE messaging is free and unlimited, while iMessaging uses data and costs them money...whereas it's usually not the case in America
That may be the reason when my nephew got married and honeymooned in Italy that he wanted everyone to download Whatsapp while he was there. Everyone but me has a Iphone. I refused as I will not put a Meta product on my phone.
Marques is like the big brother who wants to protect us from harm . he warns u , he gives u hints as to what could go wrong and he tries his best to give good reasoning . thanks bro.
That's going to change anyway because the European Union is going to force those big companies to offer interoperability so that instant messaging providers need to be able to talk with each other. I am not sure what that means in terms of supported features but for simple media and text messages there are going to break some walls for sure
Theres also laws in Canada that are going to be coming out as well. Bill C244 just made its way into the second reading of the senate, which means it is within a hairs distance of being passed as an actual law across the entirety of Canada. Bill C294 is also very close. C244 is essentially a right to repair law. C294 is the interoperability law. This will mean that apples parts pairing will become illegal in Canada.
There have been legislative proposals (most notably in the EU) to force tech giants to make their messenger apps technologically compatible. I expect this to be the case sooner rather than later.
The idea of using a platform-specific messaging app in a world that contains equally good non-platform-specific messaging apps honestly blows my mind. Not an issue I've ever found in the UK, with my friends and family at least.
It's like Many of the friends I met in gaming all talked on Discord and my real-life friend and I use WhatsApp. if I met a new friend I would give them my Discord username. There is no reason for me to use Imessage since I don't even have an iPhone and It's From a Platform Specific device.
I think in the future APPLE won't let you create an Apple account without owning an iPhone/iPad etc. They'll use the serial number of the phone to validate your account. edit: for people saying that there are a lot of users that have Apple Music/ Apple TV+ etc without owning any other Apple product. These sneaky Apple corporate people could give you a dumbed down version of Apple ID that lacks some functions, but gives you access to Apple Music and Apple TV+ but no access to iMessage. I'm just sayin...
since they have digital services, now dont think that will happen. there are people not having any apple devices still using appletv+ and if apple is smart enough they would expand their ecosystem to lure in users, without the barrier of entry of owning an apple device
that will never work theres apple software running on other non apple devices, like in samsung smart tvs that have apple tv native app installed and need an acc. this is just one of many examples.
Where I live in North Carolina, there seems to be an even split between Android and iPhone users. I use both regularly and don't think anything about it.
I think the biggest issue for me and maybe a lot of people, is if you’re already in an existing iPhone group chat and get an Android you get locked out. Then I’d have to bother everyone to start a new group chat and lose everything in our last one. I do have groups of friends that use Discord and WhatsApp but not nearly enough people to make the switch. So hopefully Nothing can be the company to open up the door and break Apple’s closed garden, even if just a little.
i'm pretty sure in iOS 17 iPhone users can still use iMessage features in a group chat that contains Android users, just on the iPhone users' ends though.
@@camsta_I for one don’t care about the features but I do admit that they are amazing. iMessage messaging should be accessible to all devices at the very least. If Apple ever decides to bring the app over to Android they will 100% paywall it lol

I know there have been projects to bring iMessage to Android before this, but this really hearkens back to the days Palm supported the Pre and would "trick" iTunes into thinking it was an iPod within iTunes. I wish the Pre was still around, webOS was great. It'll be interesting to see how this plays out.
in Europe as ive seen a bunch of comments say. People use 3rd party apps for messaging not so much the built in apple ones and sometimes i think about the fact that they pay premium for those services and end up not using them at all
I'm currently in the states as an exchange student in college. I have not been added to a group chat because "the group doesn't want the messages to turn green." Well I didn't believe it until I experienced it. If I'd be in the US for longer I would definately consider trying this.

Have a strong feeling that Apple will easily place some security measures to prevent them from being able to do this in the future, and possibly sue Sunbird/Nothing. Even Apple requiring face/touch ID per user session would cause the entire infrastructure to crumble. As Marques mentioned, the security implications are also huge. Not a great idea to do this from the Nothing team in my opinion. If I were the CEO, I would've focused on making it the smartphone of choice in the Asian markets, which Apple seems to have less of a hold on.

Trying to get large market share of an Android phone in the US is as much a fool’s errand as trying to get Nintendo users to buy your console because it has a game that’s kind of like Mario
In India , iPhone are viewed as a status symbol because of the higher price tags than the US. But the default messaging app be it iPhone or Android it WhatsApp. So it doesn't matter if it green or blue bubble. It WhatsApp by default
I think Marques is going to have to issue a retraction/clarification here, given the horrific security issues that have been uncovered regarding the Nothing Chat app…
To be fair, MKBHD indeed has said there are security concerns and red flags to use an apple account for this... But yeah it would be good if there is a clarification video for the same...
@@harishe6069 I believe he only said that just so people can't attack him on it later. He can be all "oh, well, I DID SAY there are concerns." Those concerns, however, didn't stop him from shilling for Nothing. Any person with basic understanding of tech and what Nothing tried to do would tell you it's a bad idea.
Please explain this to me. If there is a group of friends consisting of 6 people and 5 of them use an iPhone but the 6th uses an Android, will the 5 people create an iMessage group leaving out the 6th friend? I mean that is just simply rude. If you have true friends, they would use the service (WhatsApp, Viber, Telegram etc.) that enables them to communicate with you. It is as simple as that.
At the same time, other chat services must make their service quality, features etc. as good as iMessage so that iPhone owners won't miss iMessage and would switch between the apps comfortably.
I don't live in the US. But if I had people like them around me then I'm pretty sure l will make a distance from them really quick even if I'm owning an apple device.
as someone who has used android my entire growing up life (throughout high school and college)until now, I've genuinely lost count of the number of group chats I've been left out of, FaceTimes that never occurred, pictures/videos I could never send/receive, all because of literally everyone around me owning an iPhone. even both of my brothers, who started on Android, both have iPhones now 😭 (we all have Whatsapp tho). that's just how it is in the States. it's not great, but I've just gotten so used to it atp. also it's funny hearing how iPhone users talk about android. they talk about it as if it's a company in and of itself, or they think that it's just Samsung that makes Android phones (sometimes Motorola). they're always so surprised whenever I tell them that there's literally well over a dozen different companies that make android phones (Google, OnePlus, Huawei, etc).
can you blame not only iPhone users here but the *average consumer* too if they don’t know other android companies exist? Google is the only exception and they definitely should know them since they’re making progress but Huawei, Oneplus, Xiamoi etc can you really blame them? It’s not their fault that these companies can’t/dont want to advertise & sell their phones here. especially since carriers don’t do it
It's less because they use an iPhone and more because they're jerks who refused to use platform agnostic apps when it's incredible easy and more inclusive to do so.
Depends who you are talking too because the same thing can be said about most of the Android phone consumers. They don't even know what brand their phone is.
I feel like the most problematic part for a Nothing user like me would be that they're only launching it for the Nothing Phone 2. Like, why are they not allowing Nothing Phone 1 users to have this app? Is it because the Phone 2 is a premium phone or is it because they just can't be bothered to do it for the older models. If the latter is true, then I'm worried.
Probably just a timed exclusive for it as it's in beta, but it's just using Sunbird underneath which is in closed beta with a waiting list so you can register yourself on that or wait for it to come out.
Probably because there are costs to run those mac mini servers. So this nothing chat app is only profitable when it can attract people to buy their new phones. If people use the app on the old devices they are just losing money.
Even if Nothing slips out of this unfazed by Apple, i wonder what Samsung or Google will do , not only specific to the States but also in places like Korea , Japan and UK
@@jianna_oberoi that depends on how they promote it. Let's say Google brings Google Chat 2.1.1 or something with a very tiny line added to the bottom -ios text support . Also Google has been nagging EU about apple's monopoly over US and not using RCS
They can do legal stuff, but I bet apple will ignore it for a while and then implement a software update to alter some of iMessage behavior to stop hacks like this.
In the UK before the iPhone there was a similar thing with blackberry. You needed a blackberry to join BBM so everyone was getting blackberry phones. Soon as they opened BBM to all platforms everyone switched away and by this point the iPhone was dominating too
As someone who both has a Nothing Phone (2) and Sunbird (since the beginning), I love this collaboration. The only thing I hope sunbird/nothing can figure out is using blue bubbles without having to send a new contact to them. I don't want to hassle every single person in my contacts list that has a iPhone to update the contact for me.

i think the power of apple is iphone + mac together. teenagers are fickle by nature. if you give them a better camera with a powerful laptop, they will leave the ecosystem. that is a hard battle though.
Had my Nothing Phone 1 since release, and for me personally it's been one of the best phones I've had. Cheap and sleek, and since I only really use my phone for chatting and calls the fact that it isn't high-range in terms of specs doesn't matter to me. This feature in particular won't affect me, but I'm sure many will be happy with it.
The Sunbird app will actually come to all android phones eventually! I've used it on two different Samsung phones. (The beta version) This chats version may be exlusive to Nothing but the Sunbird app is nonexlusive and legit!
I can imagine being a kid is tough. Nobody wants to be the odd one out. I think it speaks to something more culturally for adults though, interesting. I literally have Whatsapp, Signal and Telegram to speak to peeps. Whats the big deal. ( I use Signal for like 2 people lol).
@@Wildcatky_502 Well, if you use Instagram, Snapchat or Gmail then your data is going through a server anyway. In this case its a mac mini instead of some linux vm running on servers made by dell or hp hosted by Bezos. The type of hardware is less of a factor than the overall architecture, security implementation, and operational practices. So if you trust Nothing about as much as Facebook or instagram then its absolutely fine
What I find interesting to this, in my personal anecdote, is that when I was able to start working on my own and everything, I ended up getting an Android phone (LG Aristo 2) because beforehand, I had a budget Android phone so it was able to work seamlessly with all of my Google things, but I also was just always more interested in Android phones growing up. I never had felt like I needed an iPhone, because hey, we're all already using Messenger or Discord and many of the people I was around didn't even have an iPhone anyways. So I wonder if there's specific places in the US where people are just more brand-loyal to Apple, considering that here in Minnesota, even older people seem to use either-or. The family I talk to uses Android, and so do many of my friends so even if I weren't on Discord, it would still be more annoying for me to use an iPhone anyways.
I think it's exactly how everyone else stated it: a walled garden of wonderfulness, especially with interconnectivity. I enjoy being able to leave my iPhone at home and either answer calls via my iPad or Apple Watch. When I tried that same thing with Samsung's "walled garden" I hit an impasse: I could receive calls on the Galaxy Tab S8+ but way, WAYYY delayed; calls were fine on the Galaxy Watch, though. It also turns out that Verizon - my carrier - was the reason I couldn't get what I got between Apple products so even if I wanted to switch to another carrier, I now have to pay off Everything Just to get some operation between Samsung products, assuming it works. (And yeah, paying off devices is a whole other thing in itself, I know.) So for now - and hopefully until Google can catch up enough - I'm personally fine with Apple everything.
For me personally, iPhone was always going to be the brand I would buy, and that’s because of the iPod. Back in the days of mp3 players, Apple was making by far the best music players, and the competition wasn’t even close. They basically perfected the UI on their devices, so iPods were the standard when it came to portable music. I ended up getting an iPod nano, and used it for a long time. When came the time to buy my first phone, the natural progression was to get an iPhone. I have a feeling this is the case for a lot of people.
Left Apple for Samsung with the X and the Notch. Samsung/Android had a lot of great features and customization that I've grown to love. Thought I would likely never go back to Apple but Samsung has steadily begun to cut out features that made their devices better like expandable storage. Apple, as usual, is gradually adding some of my favorite features from Android after years of ignoring them and now the gap is closing again.
Perhaps you should open your mind to other Android options. Sony Xperia phones keep their expandable storage and headphone jack on their latest flagships.
@@martingavrilovski6463 They all have 4k cameras now. You fill 1TB of storage with a 10 minute video. Apple's storage prices and low storage capacity are one of the most universal complaints about their hardware.

My phone is less than a year old so I won't be switching anytime soon but if this were out when I was deciding on my current phone, I would have picked it. The iMessage pressure is very real for me as an 18 year old despite the fact that I have been a committed android user for many years (after switching over). I wish the nothing phone had Apple's photo sharing capabilities though because my whole family uses that
The biggest win for Apple here in Aus for teenagers, is the schools implemented apple macs and devices throughout to the classrooms. This included ipads and laptops right from grade 4. they are in the apple eco system, at 9 which leads to there first moblie being an iphone at 12. For us parents, being on the same plaform makes it so much easier for parent controls, shared calendars, imessages and gps tracking...
I think this would be great and wish more android phones would offer this. I switched from android to iphone out of frustration because my pixel 4 had terrible QC where the backscreen adhesive wore out, making the glass just fall off, hanging on by the wireless charging connection. Ever since switching, I miss the software and innovation behind Android. I haven't gone back to android because I am to deep in the ecosystem where the groupchats I am, facetime, imessage, share my location with family etc are so essential that I can't really switch to Android without having a second phone. If this works, where even my phone number is still linked to imessage, I would switch in a heart beat.
I'm a teenager (older range but still) and all my friends are tech knowledgeable, so we don't have the green bubble discrimination or anything (mostly because we just use discord). My friend is also trying to develop apps, so likes to use my android to test them, because no iPhone sideloading.
Interesting, an open source self hosted solution would be nice. I would be happy to put an old mac mini to use as a home server running the routing server. Edit: I stand corrected - there is airmessage which does just that.
The fact that the Mac Mini in the cloud has access to my messages is a huge security concern. It not only means that all my chats can be read by that machine, it also compromises all of my friends as well (along with the media that they share). More often than not, these cloud machines are shared, meaning that one Mac Mini is hosting multiple iCloud accounts. I personally can't discount this risk.
Couldn't they just route it from a local device you own? So if you happen to have any apple device, you can setup that device to do the same instead. Or maybe even a VM if possible.
@@rep-vile Could be possible, but it's a tradeoff that they have to make which negatively impacts the user experience due to the setup that's involved. I doubt a company like Nothing is going to allow it. I'm sure some hackers from the Android community could definitely find a workaround allowing people to use their own Apple hardware. As far as cloud Apple VMs are concerned, they are notoriously hard to maintain and expensive ($25/day on AWS EC2)
Because it’s encrypted on device and apple only has the encrypted data. It’s then decrypted on the receivers device. In this case, the receivers device is Nothing’s cloud iMac, thus they have all your data unencrypted
Honest question tho, do you guys got any video to explain why I need to keep my chat "data" private? Besides for targeting advert of course because the only way to avoid it is just stay off the internet.
it’s a thing, in the us there’s very much pressure to have an iphone, and if you get an android phone you’re “weird” or looked at as “poor” or just don’t have money, this is most likely due to android phones usually having more cheaper options, but it is a very big social thing here
Haha yes, in India too having an iPhone just means you're rich. My young brother went to some expensive place recently(he has a Redmi 7A) and everyone else had iPhones, of course no one is that pretentious over a phone but my brother's phone did look hella out of pocket like it didn't belong lol
87% teenagers, that's almost equal to monopoly in a specific "vulnerable" group. That's really scary. It will most definitely go up over 90% in the coming years. Unsettling and disturbing how much power over kids one company might have.

Its def crazy that this is a thing in the US. The rest of the world could care less. Apple has great phones sure, but android and some really cool features with a diverse range of flagship phones. Europe, Asia, Africa all use third party apps like whatsapp as well as regional apps like Line, Zalo, Telegram, Wechat and so on. A phone doesn't define your identity. Everyone should be able to choose what brand or product they want to buy or use without feeling discriminated against.
agree with you but definitely it matters as US is still the cultural setter. People copy whatever trends are going on in the west (especially US). It's even evident with more kids in India having an preference for iPhone.
As close as apple holds their cards and holds them to be more precious than the One Ring, I can't imagine them staying quiet on this for long. But if Nothing has covered themselves cleanly (as they should have when attempting something like this) maybe there won't be anything apple can do about it. Time will tell. GREAT video, BTW.
If it's really just forwarding messages that are sent and received on a real, actual, Apple device, there sure isn't anything they can do about it. Its only taking advantage of stuff anyone using iMessage has available to them. As far as I can tell I don't think there's any way Apple can "break" this method of using iMessage
Apple could add a feature to iMessage that requires FaceID for example. Money transfer or whatever. Immediately, any device that's not Apple would be locked out
My thoughts are Apple will not shy away from denouncing and shutting things down eventually. Accessing, hosting, and offering Apple services without Apple's permission more than likely goes against their terms of services.
They can't. As he explains in the video, the Apple ID is being logged in to a Mac mini and all of your messages are going through that up and down. So, they are technically using Apple Products & Services. There is no law against reselling or renting out Apple Products you own
Thank you T & T ..... always being trusted and transparent! I honestly do not care for your other change with the co-host because else seems to be it across the screen like you do.... JS..... Keep it up
It really depends on what you mean by "work". I don't know if it'll convert people or help Nothing's position, but I do hope that it makes Apple do something about implementing RCS.
My thoughts are that this feature is a *trainwreck* and they pulled it after 24 hours. Not only is it a security nightmare in theory, it was actually implemented the worst possible way in practice. 'Nothing' is criminally careless with security and you should never trust them with your data.
If you are on the internet, you have no protection over your data. Anyone can take your data and then give it to anyone else. So security shouldn't be the highest priority unless you want to run pure Linux.
Also I’ve been part of the Sunbird alpha for a while and it’s the buggiest piece of software I’ve ever used. It’s works about 20% of the time and I can’t figure out how to get it to function the way it’s supposed to without failure.

Facebook owns that system and actively uses it to gather information on users.
What’s weird is that Japan has a surprisingly high iPhone rate and people buy iPhones because they’re iPhones but none of them use FaceTime or iMessage and use some third party apps.
Even Korea and China has huge number of iPhones surprisingly.
That's normal. Facetime and iMessage is primarily used in US. Like my whole family uses iPhone, talk about 30+ iPhones across ages but all of us uses Whatsapp instead.

I’ve been on college campuses for 15 years and have watched the % of Mac laptops in the campus coffee shop go from 30% to 80%. No doubt this in part is due to iPhone ownership and loyalty to Mac ecosystem.
Hope you graduate soon
Honestly I don't think the Mac ecosystem is having as large of an impact on people purchasing it as the iPhone ecosystem has on people purchasing those. The iPhone is pretty clearly inferior in a lot of ways to competitors, but for Macs, they've genuinely been a competitive product for power and build quality even disregarding the ecosystem. I'm a CS student, and I would've bought a MacBook for college if I could've ensured all of the required engineering/CS software would work on it (it wouldn't so I stuck with windows).
You're definitely not the average Colombian if you and everyone you know owns an iPhone. I'd go as far to bet you live in a gated community.

its a weird topic because right now EU is investigating whether they should designate iMessage as a gatekeeper service and thus open it up to competitors, what that means im not sure... could make iMessage downloadable on other app stores or make apple integrate RCS, either way this is an interesting time we are living in, and next 6-12 months will be spicy because apple is already working on side loading for EU users and should include it by law until march/april at the latest sooo yeah
Here in Brazil iPhones are also viewed as a rich person phone, but I would this mindset is slowly ending, since a lot of people even joke on iPhone users for having a iPhone (since most of them have ancient iPhones)
Although a lot of people uses Messenger or Instagram DMs, Whatsapp still the way to go and the most dominant app.

It’s not their fault that these companies can’t/dont want to advertise & sell their phones here. especially since carriers don’t do it
It's less because they use an iPhone and more because they're jerks who refused to use platform agnostic apps when it's incredible easy and more inclusive to do so.
american skill issue @@lifeisshørt_420
Depends who you are talking too because the same thing can be said about most of the Android phone consumers. They don't even know what brand their phone is.
Gosh!! are ppl that unexposed to technology in the US?? cause this sounds like they are
I feel like the most problematic part for a Nothing user like me would be that they're only launching it for the Nothing Phone 2.
Damn he literally made Apple support RCS with this video
Even if Nothing slips out of this unfazed by Apple, i wonder what Samsung or Google will do , not only specific to the States but also in places like Korea , Japan and UK
So true. A few years ago it was Samsung Vs Apple but now phone companies like Nothing and Google are giving Samsung a run for it's money
Nobody cares about iMessage outside of the US
@@bletwort2920lol but US market is THICKKK ASF & if a company can get into it, it'll grow dollars & reputation..

@@jianna_oberoi that depends on how they promote it. Let's say Google brings Google Chat 2.1.1 or something with a very tiny line added to the bottom -ios text support . Also Google has been nagging EU about apple's monopoly over US and not using RCS

- He said: "Honestly, probably nothing". This is EPIC.
They can do legal stuff, but I bet apple will ignore it for a while and then implement a software update to alter some of iMessage behavior to stop hacks like this.
This is actually incredible and I hope a true solution comes out of it and I hope Nothing gets what they deserve for the effort
This is interesting because Apple announced RCS support yesterday. I’m wonder if it’s in response to the phone.
Very unlikely. This phone isn't even a speed bump to Apple. Now if Samsung or Google did this, then yeah. But Nothing is a flea to them.
7:28 "(...) probably nothing" (No) pun intended?
In the UK before the iPhone there was a similar thing with blackberry.
You needed a blackberry to join BBM so everyone was getting blackberry phones.
Soon as they opened BBM to all platforms everyone switched away and by this point the iPhone was dominating too
I remember the BBM craze

The iMessage situation in the US looks incredibly rude from an outsider’s prespective😂
It is, especially from an insider's perspective.
It is. I use an iPhone and it’s asinine that my friends/family with android see my photos/videos as shit, and vise versa. It’s apple’s fault.
Change phone number easy peasy my phone was destroyed and my number was easy to buy new one that use old one
Which is not real but just say :idk
>Hey guys I’m on iMessage now with a new number
>oh cool you got an Apple?
>🤓👆um actually no I still have my android but there’s this cool new nothing phone and they setup a way to have messaging severs that run on Apple hardware that you remotely log into…
>oh ok, so does like FaceTime work?
>no but you can put me in group chats
>alright man
>Apple patches out the functionality
>weird dead contact you have to explain to people
>back to square one
Beeper actually solved this issue a while back! You should give it a shot
i think the power of apple is iphone + mac together. teenagers are fickle by nature. if you give them a better camera with a powerful laptop, they will leave the ecosystem. that is a hard battle though.
@@EAdan8xD the only thing with beeper is I don't have/want to set it up on a Mac
This wouldn't persuade me to get a Nothing phone, but I like the possibilities and direction this is going in
Out of curiosity: what would?
Nothing just killed this feature due
To its complete lack of security. Hmm. Didn’t see this coming. lol.

Beeper also follows the same concept... and it's available for all Android phones (but you might have to wait in a beta waiting list first)

Except it's taking forever to release. Been waiting for a long time now
@@Wildcatky_502 Well, if you use Instagram, Snapchat or Gmail then your data is going through a server anyway.
I have a feeling this is the case for a lot of people.
did Apple just say, oh yeah? Hold my drink.....
they goddamn did
Left Apple for Samsung with the X and the Notch.
Why would anyone need expandable storage while there is a version with 1T? What are you guys doing on your phones?
@@martingavrilovski6463 They all have 4k cameras now. You fill 1TB of storage with a 10 minute video. Apple's storage prices and low storage capacity are one of the most universal complaints about their hardware.

Probably explore more Android products. Not just Samsung. Samsung is just using a Google based software (android) and putting their own skin on it.
That Nothing Phone looks fire in the thumbnail
My phone is less than a year old so I won't be switching anytime soon but if this were out when I was deciding on my current phone, I would have picked it. The iMessage pressure is very real for me as an 18 year old despite the fact that I have been a committed android user for many years (after switching over). I wish the nothing phone had Apple's photo sharing capabilities though because my whole family uses that
Apple announced today it WILL be supporting RCS in the next year!!

I mean your icloud info is being held on some apple server somewhere alongside all other apple users... I don't see how this is that much different.
Because it’s encrypted on device and apple only has the encrypted data. It’s then decrypted on the receivers device. In this case, the receivers device is Nothing’s cloud iMac, thus they have all your data unencrypted

it’s a thing, in the us there’s very much pressure to have an iphone, and if you get an android phone you’re “weird” or looked at as “poor” or just don’t have money, this is most likely due to android phones usually having more cheaper options, but it is a very big social thing here
I'll never understand why people unironically give a shit about what phone someone owns. One of the most 1st world non-issues to ever exist.
It's a thing here in Ireland too. I suppose it's just a western thing
Haha yes, in India too having an iPhone just means you're rich. My young brother went to some expensive place recently(he has a Redmi 7A) and everyone else had iPhones, of course no one is that pretentious over a phone but my brother's phone did look hella out of pocket like it didn't belong lol

As a teenager who lives in Saudi Arabia, there's a high number of people that use iPhones, and we mainly use Whatsapp and Messenger. Nobody is using imessage or SMS.
I guess in some Arab countries (UAE, Oman), iMessage and any other encrypted messaging are banned!
It's the insidious marketting of the Apple brand. they are slace drivers no matter what they say and they implant ideas into kids brains.

@@flyingpanhandle I guess he meant to say "couldn't care less"

agree with you but definitely it matters as US is still the cultural setter. People copy whatever trends are going on in the west (especially US). It's even evident with more kids in India having an preference for iPhone.
So MKBHD wants RCS on iPhone in this video and Apple gives him that 36-48 hours later. That's an influencer.
100%. apple could squash this whole environment yesterday
They can't. As he explains in the video, the Apple ID is being logged in to a Mac mini and all of your messages are going through that up and down. So, they are technically using Apple Products & Services. There is no law against reselling or renting out Apple Products you own
It’s just a simple code on apples end to shut all this down plus a law suit
@@zaharanniyas4409 they can. Your understanding of copyright law and licensing is flawed
