  • How can Minnesota, the State of Hockey, lose a professional hockey team? A new FOX 9 documentary examines all the factors that ultimately led to the North Stars relocating to Texas in 1993. Catch the premiere of 'No Stars: When Minnesota Lost Pro Hockey' Thursday night after the Gopher game on Fox 9. The hour-long special will also be available on demand on FOX Local. The Beatles did not play at Met Center, their concert was at Met Stadium.

Too bad that Sean Skinner didn't show that level of objectivity in the documentary that is partial, biased, and made solely through the lens of disillutioned and nostalgic former North Stars fans. The last ten minutes are more interesting because it opens the perspective of new opportunities that opened up after the move but besides that, it's the same old broken record about how Norm Green is awful and bad and blah blah blah.
Many crucial points are either missing or shadowed. There's basically nothing about the Gunds already threatening to move in the late 1980s, the terrible attendance, the poor management of the team, the awful drafting year after year; and above all that, nothing about the MSC that didn't give a single sh*t about the franchise. Seeing Lester making his drunk theories is pretty embarrassing. Green put $20M from his own pockets to try to keep the ship afloat but everyone shut the door on his face. You deserve a team if you do care about it and make everything possible to make it work: not because you claim yourself as the 'State of Hockey'.
There's also barely anything of the a*hole Wolves owners who screwed any plan to let the North Stars play in Target Center. The Same owners that made a potential move of the original Jets fail and threatened to move in New Orleans only four years after the Timberwolves' inception. It's quite ironic that the Minnesota authorities refused to participate in improving the Met Center, then denied to renovate the St-Paul Civic Center, all that to finally demolish it five years later and build the X-cel Center for $120M plus and additional expansion fee of $80M for the Wild. Great mathematics exercise here... It they had done it for the North Stars, they would still be in the Twin Cities.
So blame Norm Green all you want, made him the official scapegoat of the whole story, that doesn't change the facts.
