The only thing particularly special about the brothers is that they are the last 2 members of an ethnicity that die overnight 400+ years ago. Other than Von Hohenheim, they are the only people who has blonde hair and golden eye.
I feel kinda dumb for not catching that
Al actually has blue eyes. Only Ed has golden eyes.
Josh Hillard I'm sorry, what? He has golden eyes, dude.
MasterPoppers Yeah you're right, but in the original series he actually had dark greenish eyes.
Josh Hillard Still gold. Just more dull than Ed's. fma.wikia.com/wiki/Alphonse_Elric/2003_Anime
My favorit thing about this episode is the fact that young Hohenheim is the first person we see in the first into the show have. Right in front of you the whole time.
At first I assumed it was an older Edward. But he'd have to grow a lot, so the moment it became clear that wouldn't happen... XD
In all seriousness though, for people who watched the 2003 version, it was clear from the start.
winterwolf211 Pretty sure EoS Ed is about as tall as young hohenheim.
It would be a (minor, but still) spoiler to give details but there'll be a scene where we can compare
*****
Hohenheim, Al, Winry and some others. Hohenheim is as tall as Al's shoulder, same for the chimeras. All the others are clearly shorter.
fun fact: the voice actor who played the young Hohenheim played Alphonse in the 2003 version when he was 12, but his voice changed so he couldn't play him in Brotherhood
And he now voices Oscar in RWBY.
I heard a difference in Al's voice when I started FMAB, but I figured it was just due to aging or lack of practice doing that voice...
Nostalgia Aaron plays young Hohenheim!?
It's actually really funny, his voice dropped like 2 octaves when he hit puberty if I remember right. This time they got a lady to do it instead, to avoid that issue.
After this episode, it's a good idea to go back and watch the first opening. The guy you see at the beginning isn't Ed - it's young Hohenheim, and standing in front of the Xerxes transmutation circle. The first bit of the OP is basically Hohenheim's backstory. I remember when Brotherhood first came out, my sister and I recognized him as Young Hohenheim right away, and we were immediately so excited I think we both gasped really loudly. We'd been wanting an adaptation of the manga, and right off the bat it hinted at some of our favorite stuff to come.
I only caught that only because you said it
Ik I’m late but I thought that was Ed when he got older
The split second Hohenheim “attacks” Izumi, all four jaws dropped at once. I’d never seen that before 🤣
Hohenheim's backstory always gets me! It's so mindblowing for me to find out how he was originally a slave who was from the ancient civilization Xerxes. Not only that, but Hohenheim himself made so much sense to me after this episode. It explains why he's so distant and why he views himself as a monster. I mean, wouldn't you if your immortal body was the product of the genocide of your people? He's basically the only survivor of his people and civilization. I wouldn't be surprised if he didn't suffer from survivor's guilt at some point.
What's also so tragic is how Hohenheim said he wanted a family someday and once he had one, he couldn't or at least, he had a hard time being with them because of what he is. All the guy wanted was a better life and a family and Father (Homunculus) twisted that and cursed him with immortality and half the population of Xerxes tormenting him. I'm surprised he didn't go insane yet because of that.
Sucks for Ed because he already unknowingly met a big philosopher stone. Maybe one of the many more reasons to hate Hohenheim if he ever finds out?
OMFG "Period" at the end of this video was 👌👌
True but the fact that his body was still made up of half of his people and he lived so long thus far, I can understand why he himself would feel that way. In the end, he isn't like any other human being. He lives on, never getting old, and always watching those close to him die.
What I love though is how when he explained to Izumi and Sid about himself in regards to being a Philosopher stone, he said "That's *what* I am". Just because that's what he is and he feels like a monster at times, it doesn't define *who* he is as a person and I love those little details. It's just a small thing, a word, but it really gives more insight into Hohenhein overall.
Hohenheim is one of my favourite characters. :)
After this episode it is meaningful to see back the recap episode. You'll get a better understanding about whole story.
They mentioned Scars arc in a recent reaction, and while his arc IS great, Hoenheim’s is THE best.
Bradley was injected with a Philosopher's Stone, which broke his body down and rebuilt him as a homunculus. Hoenheim's body was effectively turned INTO a Philosopher's Stone, but at some level he's still human. That's the reason he can still perform alchemy and have children
Armstrong explaining everything(Immortality, Homunculii, etc) to Bradley also covers for Ed and Al(who gave her most of the details a few episodes back) as she made it seem as though Raven revealed all the details.
BTW, since all the people of Xerxes was sacrificed in that night, Ed and Al is the only ones with blond hair and golden eyes in Amestris. And Hohenheim only uses glasses to have a different face from Our Father.
I dunno, I never really watched any Super Man or Justice League cartoon, I'm not from US to begin with. I know a little bit, tho.
7:39 Interesting observation. Not many people get it. Yes, that looks like Pride. Or, Father - the dwarf in the flask. This means that the experiment that created 'the Dwarf in the flask' required the alchemist to open the portal. So, the Dwarf in the flask comes from the portal of truth.
This is an important piece of information, it also helps to understand Father's longing for freedom.
In addition: The "Dwarf" was a part of the Whole that is the Truth. The moment it became conscious and aquired some individuality, it started rejecting being a part of the whole and desired to be THE whole itself.
Sovan Hohenheim is the best character
How did they miss hear “So, Von Hohenheim,” and get Sovan Hohenheim?
@@ripleyjlawman.3162 They didnt hear the comma
Van* Hohenheim
Young Hohenhein is voiced by the 2003's Fullmetal Alchemist Alphonse's original VA. He was a kid in the original and they wanted to include him in this series as young Hohenheim since they couldn't have him voice Alphonse again due to him hitting puberty.
It means that Ed and Al are of Xerxes descent -the last living ones at that, it also means that in a twisted way, since Hoenheim and the Dwarf are of one blood, the Homunculi are their family -cousins at the very least.
Fun fact: Hohenheim is named after Paracelsus, one of the pioneers of modern medicine and the father of toxicology. His full name is Philippus Aureolus Theophrastus Bombastus von Hohenheim, hence the names the homonculus suggested.
Homunculus was a Paracelsus fan.
I love when Hoenhiem fixed Izumi and four jaws dropped.
8:55 thats a great scene. It gives you almost a sense of what it would be like to be the last man on earth.
the thing is. every philisopher stone is a true philosopher stone. theres no fake. the only thing that matters is how many lives are in that philosopher stone which determines how long it will last
I love this episode. Largely because young Hoenhime/ slave 23 is Aaron Dismuke. He played Alphonse in the 2003 version of Full Metal Alchemist. He couldn't return for the roll because his voice changed. Having him play a young version of Alphonse's father is a great metaphore for his part in the show. Love it.
Hohenheim*
“So, Von hohenheim”?
You guys “sovan hohenheim”
He's not a homunculus he's a human philosopher stone... van said it out of his mouth.
Sovon Hohenheim - Eric
9:44
There's a difference between a Homunculus and being immortal.
A Homunculus is an artificially made human... Hoenhiem is just an immortal being-- he had children, which Homunculus cannot do.
Fuck yes! I can't wait till you guys can see the rest of the story unfold. You have some interesting questions.
so the ritual that gave hoenheim and father immortality isnt "failed" human transmutation like what happened to al and ed. Father transferred the souls of xenxes into him and hoenheim to use as a powersource to prolong their lives. He used souls as a battery basically. Since souls can be transferred and used as payment it supersedes any need for equivalent exchange.
Father is based on God(Truth)
And Pride is based on father
The way all their mouths drop at the same time @10:34 lol
the fact that hoho is the kid's father only means that ed and al are kinda related to the humonculi, that's it; it doesnt give them special powers
I’ve been waiting for this episode ever since the beginning
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paracelsus
Theophrastus Bombastus von Hohenheim
Umm what does that have to do with anything? Are those related to Alchemy? I'm not really familiar with Alchemy....
Oh that's cool. I had no idea
Yeah. The dwarf in the flask was really stuck on the name. Both suggestions were the same person.
Van* Hohenheim
10:35 That reaction was great haha xD, all 4 of you speechless
Calvin's beard grows along with his power level.
Shane: *smiling*
Someone dies
Shane: *still smiling*
Someone stains the ground with their blood
Shane: *still fucking smiling*
You monster
Its sad to see how the early friendship between Hohenheim & the dwarf in the flask was genuine. Who knows how the future would have turned out if they worked together for the common good...
Finally My episode has came!!!
lol yeah congrats on that, my episode is when mustang fucks envy up
fun fact: the monk who introduced alcahestry from xing is hoenheim and the monk who introduced alchemy in amestris is father
the dwarf in the flask was made from the essence of god(idk how they did that) and hoenheim's blood
Really, “fun facts” five years later like they haven’t already watched the anime?
truth is god. it is an idea of a higher being among humanity. god doesn't have to be loving or kind or anything, maybe god is a trickster who laughs at fortunes and tragedies all at the same time. idk why it is so hard to believe that, is it because the whole sacrifies thing? that can be associate it with demon of some sort? i don't even know why im even writing this, they don't even read comments_(:з」∠)_
well they want to read the comments but due to fear of spoilers they can't. Their questions would be answered as the story unfolds.... it is such an amazing anime.
EpicaStella But Rhop does read comments so maybe he tells them important stuff without the spoilers lol
Remember Doctor Marco research paper about Philosopher Stone that written in code using cooking recipe? Well, Mustang wrote his research paper also in code, and the base for his code is Girls Name he dates. That's why he can understand what Hawkeye trying to say. Every alchemist have their own code used in their research paper.
Hohenheim is based of the real life alchemist Paracelsus whose real name is Philippus Aureolus Theophrastus Bombastus von Hohenheim which is where Van Hohenheim comes from as well as Theophrastus Bombastus
So... fun fact. The veil we see in the first opening is from Zerkses, and that's not Ed we see at the start
I love Hohenheim but George/Narrator from Yu Yu Hakusho will always be my favorite Kent Williams role
Do Code Geass after you finish Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood ! You guys will love Code Geass, its an amazing anime, and one of the best and most entertaining.
JustTooLit Fuck that shit. Takes to long to even remotely become interesting. I don't wanna sit through that cringe, there are better shows/anime to watch
You got bad taste lmao idk what to say.
Maybe once they finish deathnote, it would follow that better given in both our protagonist is a great tactician but with questionable morals
COWBOY BEBOP !!!
Code Geass > Bebop
can someone please tell em that there are NO PERFECT PHILOSOPHER'S STONE? they are all powered by a certain number of souls, and once the souls run out from a philosopher's stone POOF!! no more stone... why is this such a tough concept to understand? that's why you need to pay attention during the beginning other than that pretty neat stuff
like a battery :)
No
To be completely Fair, I've counter people who have seen the entire series and have asked the same question. That said, I agree. The Philosopher's Stone that you read about in books is fictional. That's just a myth. It's too perfect to be real.
Early in the series they show a Priest with a "fake" stone the malfunctioned after a while. That probably caused the confusion since that type was never used again, but looks the same.
RynKen turns out that stone wasn’t a fake, it was just a very small stone, made with few souls. That’s why it ran out so fast.
The dwarf looks like a yugioh monster
when you finish Full Metal Alchemist you guys should watch "Magi"
2:20 Hawkeye will remember that
Your faces were so shocked 😮
Hawkeye probably planned out ahead of time what she would say, then it was just a matter of finding mustang and getting his attention
This is one of my favorite episodes of the series because it delves into the backstory of Ed and Al's father and the creation of father.
I like that the song at the end tells us what intro song you're on😂. Who makes the songs? They're pretty well made. Looking forward to more.
This episode was worth the wait.
“beautiful strong fire babies”
I think the Dwarf is one of those thousands of eyes you see when you go through the portal of truth, the ones that grabbed Ed and pulled him through the portal. Those things are probably pieces of God and his servants which contain a certain amount of his infinite knowledge, the old king must've traded something in order to trap a piece of God/"the truth" inside an ordinary flask and then he demanded it teach him how to become immortal. Except that piece of God has its own will and cannot be controlled, thus it deceived the king into destroying himself, his own people and giving it freedom & immense power.
Lmao “sovan”
I love this show so much! Glad you guys are so intrigued as well. Can't wait for more!
greatest backstory ever. the moment Father says 'blood brother of mine!' i got chills
I said in in another reactors comments. Fun fact: Theophrastus Bombastus are two names of the real Hohenheim who lived during the German Renessaince. He's also known as "Paracelsus".
It is meaningful to see back the recap episode after this episode. You'll get different understanding about him and his way of life.
Fun fact: Slave 23/Young Van Hohenheim is voiced by the same guy that voiced Al in the first anime
Fun fact: Young Hohenheim is voiced by the same guy who voiced Al in the original Fullmetal Alchemist 2003
You guys should make reaction videos to the peaky blinders series, it's such an amazing show
What I liked from the first series was when they explained how humonculus were made. It is completely different from the version here, but it was more focused on explaining how things happened in their version.
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paracelsus
Philippus Aureolus Theophrastus Bombastus von Hohenheim was a real guy :)
You guys forgot the part where Ed, Al, Armstrong company discover that Amestris was created as a military nation, for the purpose of making the transmutation circle, in the tunnel. Which means, that while the massacres that happened in Xerses were probably within months of each other, Amestris had no people, so it had to be built from ground up, which mean centuries of trading, expansion, etc was required to create a country that big. That's why its taking time for this second transmutation circle. And that's why the riots and massacres in Amestris are spread apart so far in years from each other. Nobody will come to a country that's writhing in blood.
Okay, so why Hohenheim could not restore Izumi's organs? Like shouldn't he be able to do the same thing as the Father, so he can bypass equivalent exchange?
A perfect philosopher Stone would never be depleted.
All the stones produced so far have a limit
13:18 I wonder if the reason Ed and Al are so prodigious and intelligent is because of their father being a living philosopher's stone or was it just good genes since Van was intelligent enough to learn from the Dwarf in the Flask.
Philipus Aurelius Theophrastus Bombastus Von Hohenhiem was a medieval physician and alchemist
A Homunculus has all the knowledge in the world since it born.
some one probably already said this but Fun Fact, young Van Hohenheim's voice actor was Al's voice actor in the first FMA anime dub
Super late but fun fact for anyone rewatching like I am. Theophrastus Bombastus von Hohenheim was a famous real life alchemist
I have been waiting ages for you to watch this again . I just got done watching this and it's so bloody good . You should focus on this anime guys .
Even though it’s all backstory, I think this is probably my favorite episode of the series 😁
Hey guys,
Watch Made in Abyss. It is a great show and my personal fave for the year.
Fullmetal Alchemist: (Man Gets murdered)
Shane: (6:48) laughs
now that you all know this info you should go back and watch opening 1 @Blind Wave
"Sovan" lol
I've been waiting for this ep xD also I want Aaron's shirt! where I must have it!
We are approaching the tail-end of the anime
Can't wait to see their reaction to this!
One of my favorite episodes!
I think they missed an OVA... wasn't there one where Ed and Al were chasing after a rumor of someone who has successfuly performed a human transmutation? A blind alchemist.
It doesn't add anything to the story in terms of character development/backstory or worldbuilding, like the others did.
This was a sick episode
10:37 Synchronized WTF
There's actually one more OVA, I think. It was waaay back at the beginning and you missed it. About a blind guy or something.
this week HYPE!!!
Being a philosophers stone makes the brothers slightly more talented for alchemy than maybe the average aspiring alchemist
11:40 :OOOO damn haha they finally see the plan of the government :D
I know a little about healing alchemist he says, A LITTLE he says a fckin little lol!
fmab is THE BOOK OF RECIPES OF DOCTOR MARCO. FATHER it is the first and only omunculus,
the others are just fragments of him
Cant wait for 44
whats that one again
The only episode numbers I remember are 4, 22, 26, 40, and 53.
bleep blorp the one where greed comes back
4:18 :OOOO xD
21:30 - Someone who has studied philosophy would be useful. This anime makes you think. And this is not even a matter of realism. It's just philosophy.
Go rewatch Ed's description of the pieces found in Gluttony's stomach. Maybe you can find the truth within the truth.
Yay, we can stop cursing the OVAs now!
I'm just waiting see these guys react when Honehime loses his shit and shows only a small portion of HIS AWESOME ASS FUCKING POWER!
10:37 all them mouth : O
i feel like these guys dont really understand about homunculus, if you look it up, homunculus refers to an artificial human that was created by alchemy in real life, so im guessing thats how it works in the anime as well.
Zyuu Fuwada it's probably cuz of Bradley and Ling that confuses them
Now this is podracing
I was keeping up with them but I binged it since it got so intense...full metal is over T_T
You know, I kind of glad that we had all these OVAs because this way, this incredible episode was synched with episode 2 of My Hero Academia yesterday! A great weekend of great episodes.
