@Dick Guzinya it's quite easy. Dressed as a female? You call her a she. Dressed as a man? You call him a he. It's actually disrespectful to call dradqueens he when their in drag.
@Matthew Gillis RuPaul is a drag queen. It is really rude to call a drag queen 'he'. It isn't a matter of gender identity, but artistic integrity. You wouldn't call a Michelangelo a 'drawing' or a Broadway play a 'skit'. So why would you cheapen their art of female impersonation?

@Lester Diamond - Margaret Johnson is absolutely correct, so why don't YOU stfu. I know because I was there during those times. Were YOU? Most of the 'club kids' were parasitic, hypocritical morons... they were users, in every way imaginable!
Icon Rupaul!! Look at karma, Ru's more relevant in today's culture than Geraldo could ever wish to be. Much Love to these free spirits that paved the way for self expression freedom.
+guinness4life what does one person killing someone have to do with people of the nightclub scene paving the way for self expression freedom? also it was that michael guy right?
So in your mind there was no self expression for thousands and thousands of years, the world over, in countless cultures but then the 90s and club kids happened and the human spirit could at last slap some Lamé on and be set free?
I think there was self expression for millions of years, but then there was a change that caused societal norms and taboos. George Orwell's 1984 alludes to that during the war as well. Club kids and art in general is a means to break that mold. People express themselves in many different ways. this was one form.

what people don't understand is that talk shows were the front line of progress. nobody would have given that group any air time. when these kind of shows came on, those of us who were fighting for gay rights were very excited.
yeah i think for an open minded crowd it was. the host and audience for alot of talk shows came off like assholes but often the guests who were "outcasts" were well spoken and educated.
Might be nice if you knew the scene and how to read between the lines but for the general audience, this show was terrible. They do just show the extremes, cut off anytime an actual point is made or discussion happens about the philosophies behind it all. Then the weak attempt to push the drug angle. Publicity like this is worse than no publicity other than it might have inspired people to join this culture.
I can get it. Even if they were massively being condescended to, this was the only outlets that would present them. We have the luxury now of platforms like youtube where people can make their own content. But back in the day? I know it was stuff like this, and the artists of the cartoons I watched, etc., that gave me an inkling of 'hey, there's a world out there that's glamorous and amazing, and you can be fierce and yourself, and it's ok.' And I needed that. Even if I was only a little kid wishing I could be as badass as the rocker chicks in media. I needed to know that the world wasn't terrible and bland. Even now, we're watching DESPITE the intended tone, because we want to see these people at the time, talking about their experiences. These are the documents we have.
I'm so happy. Clearly he was a knowing entrepreneur and wouldn't have just let his son go out and back him blindly w.o. a business plan. New yorkets dont part w their money easily
There is an old joke, a young man said "Dad! I'm leaving for a life of wine, women, and song, and you can't stop me!". Dad thought for a moment and replied "Let me grab my coat. I'm going with you.".
Like RuPaul said, people like them have always been around. Every generation (at least in modern history) has had artistic type people who want to buck the norms of society and express themselves in their own unique way....Flappers, Beatnicks, Haippies, etc. The "new" thing with this group was the large amount of drag and open homosexuality. I wonder why there weren't any former hippies in the audience who could have spoken up for those kids. Most older people in the 60s thought that the hippie crowd wouldn't be able to integrate into society and be leaders, but they did, and I'm sure the majoroty of the kids on this show went on to lead productive lives.
It started really in the 20s after the first world War where thousands of women were left widows and thousands of children grew up in unstable, single mother households.
It was a combination of post-war demoralisation, fatherless children and widowed women, post-qar immigration of blacks and prohibition combined lead to the rise of organised crime and jazz music being played in illegal clubs where jazz music played. It's development is largely a product of other 20thbcrntuey events such as the great depression and subsequent rise of keynesian consumerism and the welfare state, state mandatory education, child labor laws, ww2 deaths, new divorce and custody laws, vietnam war leading to the counterculturel revolution of the late sixties.
Omg I can't believe Rupaul thought that he wouldn't be good in three-piece suit! You never know what you are going to wear all the time 20 years later. lol

I've actually partied with the Club Kids, I worked the door at The Starck Club in Dallas back in 89-93 I was the girl checking IDs and holding the VIP list they used to throw private parties there. This totally takes me back to my drugged out partying days. The good old days. That was ages ago.

Geraldo was such a prick 😂 This is such a precious clip of our history honestly, the context, the crowd interaction and social dynamics is incredible to see.
I haven't seen this in over 25 years. Back then I didn't realize what an condescending piece of shit Geraldo was being to them. And Michael Musto was right: Geraldo *did* change his name. He was born Gerald, plain ole Gerald ! I guess they didn't want to touch it.
I didn't really think Geraldo was being condescending at all. I think he was just trying to make it an interesting show and see what kind of reactions he could get. He did at times show himself as being very open minded, but didn't want to appear as though he totally sided one way or another. He really tried to get everybody's viewpoint on this lifestyle, that is why he went with the Suits and some of the older folk to speak with. I think he was just having fun, and trying to have an interesting show to watch. Sometimes people take an individuals attitude to stern and forget to see that they are actually just trying to create a fun atmosphere.
I know! He did not! Come for Rupaul! He really was bashing them instead of trying to educate himself about their culture. This is just sad. I have more respect for Rupaul and all these individuals here; simply because they had to endure all this bigotry. I wasn't born when this interview was filmed. I was shy 2 years, but I honestly bow down to them all; for paving the way for us. We came a long way, We have a longer way to go, but with every step our destiny becomes brighter.
Every single generation partied and loved their lives! They all had their forms of self expression and pushing the limits of society. It’s amazing how far we have come watching the process over history

As much as i know it was a different time (i was a tiny baby in 1990), it still does shock & hurt me to see the way people treated LGBTQ+ individuals still, in my lifetime... My own child is just 4 years old & I'm glad things aren't as awful for him & his peers sake. But the more i watch on, the more i think of how we still have so much work to do as a society. These kids did so much just by being themselves loudly and proudly. I do think that based on many of the other comments here, a lot of people still miss the importance they carried today. I've also been thinking a lot lately, about how much force and volume the hateful types were able to gather during my child's four years of life. All he's ever known was an America that tries to be more like this one shown here, than it's ever been in my memory. But these kids work can never be undone - RuPaul was so right, the people who see every color including but not limited to black white & grey have always been here, and they always will be... I'm wondering if the phobic people are just worried about what those like the club kids might see in them, that's not something they wanna see in themselves? I think this recent surge in ugliness is the death-rattle of a beast that these kid's parents & maybe their grandparents worked hard to slay. I think millennials & gen z are crapped on so hard is that we're not typically this fearful, hateful, etc - i believe the backlash of the last few years is the death rattle of a great 3 headed beast of willful ignorance. ❤ have a beautiful day
@@marysupernova7780 well, it WAS a different time. A time when people were still allowed to have opinions unlike today. I want to live in a world where people can have opinions no matter how different they are. TBH, I would take the early 90s in a heartbeat compared to the garbage times we live in now. The 90s were probably the last great decade, we had technology but our lives weren't ruled by it. So many different creative outlets to choose from. NYC had the club scene, punk/hardcore, graffiti, hip hop, etc.. You should also realize many of the club kids were troubled drug addicts who escaped their homes to come to NYC with a mission to just party, quite a few of them in this video. Not exactly the role models for pride and self expression you think they were. One went on to kill and dismember another human being, served his time in prison and he recently died of an overdose. It's pure tragedy. The fact is that there were many underground club and music scenes going on in NYC during that time period, and the club kids pictured here were just one tiny part of it. I was there through most of it. I am not coming from a position of hate, quite the opposite. Just saying that by watching this video it is easy to say in those days people who were different were treated poorly, and that might be true to a degree, but there was so much more about that time period that was positive.
Aw I just love "Stan", Michael Tron's dad. He has the best outlook. "I am definitely his backer 100%.... It's okay, he should choose for himself.

Beagan Graham , , , yeah, , "progress"

The hippie generation is the biggest disappointment in American history.

kevinseveneleven 2019 can you explain what you mean please?

I was really young when he was enjoying his heyday and I didn't realize what an asshole he was either.

RetroGuy76 hey u!!!!! Michael killed angel, go to American justice first, dancing drugs and murder.....then.... They made a movie called party animal, it stars Seth Green, and Macally Culkin ... It's based on the true story, in a comedy drama ... It give u all ur answers!!! And it's free on you tube.... Watch American justice first !!! So you can appreciate the movie🙋. Also.... Even today Michael is on you tube he has is on page called pee ew, I just found this out last night, 😁
I have to draw the line between being a "club kid" for fun and doing it as a lifestyle. As a lifestyle, it doesn't end well for 99% of people. When I was younger I went to many raves but I never bought into the lifestyle. Many of my friends who did flushed their lives down the drain with drugs, because drugs are a key part of the lifestyle whether club kids will admit it for not.
Yep.... I am sadly one who took it as a lifestyle and it ends where it always ends.....heroin.
I bought Into the lifestyle but I grew up
You can say that about ANY group. Do you know how many Wall Street guys end up homeless bc of drugs?
And look at RuPaul today. A whole LEGEND
Excellent show, thanks for the upload. 🇬🇧
I see a lot of fashion styles in this video that is trending right now. I love how this fashion era is coming back.
rupaul was so ahead of his time
Not really the New Romantics we’re doing this ten years before in Britain
Knock it off. Any video made more than 8 years ago: "Wow, so ahead of their time." Sorry, drag queens were around way, way, way longer.
@@CashelOConnolly Agreed. RuPaul was cool and all but he was not the first to do eccentricity and break the gender norm, there were 1970s androgyny and how that carried over into the 80s as well as the New Romantic scene of that time. The Club Kids were just the New Romantics of the 1990s.
that's why you call her mother
Wow! Geraldo was so disrespectful. I'm shocked that he stayed on the air as long as he did.
Phil's Wife brown privilege
90s attitude era.. No one was soft like the people of today
Gtfo it.
Lol he is just entertaining theyre stupidity 😂😂
This is when Trump thinks America was great...he wants to make America be condescending and prejudiced like this again.
Even back then, you could totally tell Rupaul would have the world eating out of her hand one day. She's smart, funny, charismatic, personable. She really had that star quality, and she knew how to focus and harness that. She started an EMPIRE! And we love her!
My aunt used to be Geraldo's personal drug dealer.
Len Martin spill the t
Len Martin 😂😂😂
What's Geraldo's poison?
Do tell!!!! Let me guess was it coke he put up that big nose?
@@aprilwest9852 Probably coke or speed. A lot of those supposedly straight edged, conservative types were into coke in the 80s and 90s. Some of them still are.
I love that Michael Musto immediately brings up AIDS on national daytime television in 1990. BRAVO!!!
Do you remember his role in the movie Manhunter? He killed it! 🙌🏻
The transphobia and homophobia in this vid omg they look so uncomfortable
Ikr!?!?
@@DavidPuddy2024 Homophobia isn't really an opinion, it's just hate
I remember watching Geraldo every day after school. Way before talk tv took over.
Aw I just love "Stan", Michael Tron's dad. He has the best outlook. "I am definitely his backer 100%.... It's okay, he should choose for himself. I mean it's not my lifestyle, but it's his and he should choose and it's okay." If only everyone could be this positive and open minded there would be a lot less hate and less people scared to come forward with who they really are. So, good job Stan, I just love you and your attitude/outlook on life :)
Micheal tron was an obnoxious fuck who snorted heroin I knew him.
