Icon Rupaul!! Look at karma, Ru's more relevant in today's culture than Geraldo could ever wish to be. Much Love to these free spirits that paved the way for self expression freedom.
+guinness4life what does one person killing someone have to do with people of the nightclub scene paving the way for self expression freedom? also it was that michael guy right?
So in your mind there was no self expression for thousands and thousands of years, the world over, in countless cultures but then the 90s and club kids happened and the human spirit could at last slap some Lamé on and be set free?
I think there was self expression for millions of years, but then there was a change that caused societal norms and taboos. George Orwell's 1984 alludes to that during the war as well. Club kids and art in general is a means to break that mold. People express themselves in many different ways. this was one form.
There is an old joke, a young man said "Dad! I'm leaving for a life of wine, women, and song, and you can't stop me!". Dad thought for a moment and replied "Let me grab my coat. I'm going with you.".
I love the representation and most the audience, but i'm cringing from how Geraldo is demeaning the counter culture he is exposed to. "Everybody say love!" Rupaul!!!!
this is an accurate representation of two things: 1) unapologetic confidence and honesty on the part of the guests and crowd 2) passive aggressive homophobia on the part of the host
Every single generation partied and loved their lives! They all had their forms of self expression and pushing the limits of society. It’s amazing how far we have come watching the process over history

Bkkersey93 you don’t get it. right over your head. too avant- garde for you. i suggest you stay in your lane, comment on something you are educated and passionate about...that way you won’t make a fool of yourself as you are right now.
Like RuPaul said, people like them have always been around. Every generation (at least in modern history) has had artistic type people who want to buck the norms of society and express themselves in their own unique way....Flappers, Beatnicks, Haippies, etc. The "new" thing with this group was the large amount of drag and open homosexuality. I wonder why there weren't any former hippies in the audience who could have spoken up for those kids. Most older people in the 60s thought that the hippie crowd wouldn't be able to integrate into society and be leaders, but they did, and I'm sure the majoroty of the kids on this show went on to lead productive lives.
It started really in the 20s after the first world War where thousands of women were left widows and thousands of children grew up in unstable, single mother households.
It was a combination of post-war demoralisation, fatherless children and widowed women, post-qar immigration of blacks and prohibition combined lead to the rise of organised crime and jazz music being played in illegal clubs where jazz music played. It's development is largely a product of other 20thbcrntuey events such as the great depression and subsequent rise of keynesian consumerism and the welfare state, state mandatory education, child labor laws, ww2 deaths, new divorce and custody laws, vietnam war leading to the counterculturel revolution of the late sixties.
He basically looks satisfied when anyone puts down any of the club kids, and makes anyone who actually has something good to say about their scene to sit down and shut up. he gives me the creeps.
Right? Just thinking about Geraldo in his selfie in his little bath towel that he took to prove "how sexy he still is" a few years back IS WAAAAY creepier than anything any of these 'kids' are wearing~and they know who they are!
what people don't understand is that talk shows were the front line of progress. nobody would have given that group any air time. when these kind of shows came on, those of us who were fighting for gay rights were very excited.
yeah i think for an open minded crowd it was. the host and audience for alot of talk shows came off like assholes but often the guests who were "outcasts" were well spoken and educated.
Might be nice if you knew the scene and how to read between the lines but for the general audience, this show was terrible. They do just show the extremes, cut off anytime an actual point is made or discussion happens about the philosophies behind it all. Then the weak attempt to push the drug angle. Publicity like this is worse than no publicity other than it might have inspired people to join this culture.
I can get it. Even if they were massively being condescended to, this was the only outlets that would present them. We have the luxury now of platforms like youtube where people can make their own content. But back in the day? I know it was stuff like this, and the artists of the cartoons I watched, etc., that gave me an inkling of 'hey, there's a world out there that's glamorous and amazing, and you can be fierce and yourself, and it's ok.' And I needed that. Even if I was only a little kid wishing I could be as badass as the rocker chicks in media. I needed to know that the world wasn't terrible and bland. Even now, we're watching DESPITE the intended tone, because we want to see these people at the time, talking about their experiences. These are the documents we have.
I love how in all these appearances we get like this steady, technical, psycho analytical explanation of the Club Kids and their movements by Michael Musto
I haven't seen this in over 25 years. Back then I didn't realize what an condescending piece of shit Geraldo was being to them. And Michael Musto was right: Geraldo *did* change his name. He was born Gerald, plain ole Gerald ! I guess they didn't want to touch it.
I didn't really think Geraldo was being condescending at all. I think he was just trying to make it an interesting show and see what kind of reactions he could get. He did at times show himself as being very open minded, but didn't want to appear as though he totally sided one way or another. He really tried to get everybody's viewpoint on this lifestyle, that is why he went with the Suits and some of the older folk to speak with. I think he was just having fun, and trying to have an interesting show to watch. Sometimes people take an individuals attitude to stern and forget to see that they are actually just trying to create a fun atmosphere.

Clown guy kind of creeped me out a bit, didn't realise he was a killer clown!
Ngnom, that was one form. I will accept that.
OMG 😍 I so miss the 90's!!!! NYC in the 1990s...there was nothing like it.

I miss the drugs....
That's how all talk shows were back then, hosts like Donahue would overtly represent Middle America's reaction to out of the norm guests.
Chloe Bonnett I
Middle America was sitting on its ass watching these shows. The producers knew who their audience was.
He's just a super dick in every way.
well, they are freaks.
this is an accurate representation of two things:
1) unapologetic confidence and honesty on the part of the guests and crowd
2) passive aggressive homophobia on the part of the host
BARELY passive aggressive, he was a condescending d*ck. Its crazy to watch
They’re a bunch of god damn weenies! HILLARY 2020!
Most of the guests snorted heroin with the exception of Julie and ru Paul I knew all of them..
3) we need a stronger strain of aids
very passive aggressive- Hes always been a dick!
That dad with the glasses and tie, what a good father!! Always nurture your child’s creativity and individuality.
Every single generation partied and loved their lives! They all had their forms of self expression and pushing the limits of society. It’s amazing how far we have come watching the process over history
I was so young when Geraldo was on; I never realized how bad he was as a talk show host... terribly disrespectful.
They're confused freak shows. Why should anyone respect them when they dont respect themselves?
@@bkkersey93 What a twisted and ignorant perspective. You assume they don't respect themselves based on your own hangups. The problem is you, not them.
Bkkersey93 Ignorance breeds hatred.
Bkkersey93 you don’t get it. right over your head. too avant- garde for you. i suggest you stay in your lane, comment on something you are educated and passionate about...that way you won’t make a fool of yourself as you are right now.
I agree with you. He's a pos and it no shocker hes irrelevant now.
The hippie generation is the biggest disappointment in American history.
@@kevinseveneleven Can we put this on the loudest speakers we could find? Seriously, it became a generation of blessed leeches.
kevinseveneleven 2019 can you explain what you mean please?
Momma Ru has been true to her words all these decades: "We're all born naked and the rest is drag" and my favorite "Love yourself"
lmaooooooo i love that he is trying SO HARD to deem them as bad people. but they are so smart. love all of them
He basically looks satisfied when anyone puts down any of the club kids, and makes anyone who actually has something good to say about their scene to sit down and shut up. he gives me the creeps.
Oh yeah right. Geraldo gives you the creeps but not the freaks that he was interviewing? Sicko
Lucy Katt I thought I was the only one that noticed this
I feel like Geraldo tries to turn audience against club kids and is kind of mocking them
Right? Just thinking about Geraldo in his selfie in his little bath towel that he took to prove "how sexy he still is" a few years back IS WAAAAY creepier than anything any of these 'kids' are wearing~and they know who they are!
Duh he wants to humiliate them. thats the point of bullying. are you stupid.
what people don't understand is that talk shows were the front line of progress. nobody would have given that group any air time. when these kind of shows came on, those of us who were fighting for gay rights were very excited.
yeah i think for an open minded crowd it was. the host and audience for alot of talk shows came off like assholes but often the guests who were "outcasts" were well spoken and educated.
Beagan Graham , , , yeah, , "progress"
Well said. Would throw Jerry Springer into that mix.
I love how in all these appearances we get like this steady, technical, psycho analytical explanation of the Club Kids and their movements by Michael Musto
I love the dad was oh yeah my son is fine going to clubs doing drugs but not yay he's dating a club kid girl!
Excellent show, thanks for the upload. 🇬🇧

I certainly appreciated my lifestyle back then. ❤❤❤
I haven't seen this in over 25 years. Back then I didn't realize what an condescending piece of shit Geraldo was being to them. And Michael Musto was right: Geraldo *did* change his name. He was born Gerald, plain ole Gerald ! I guess they didn't want to touch it.
I was really young when he was enjoying his heyday and I didn't realize what an asshole he was either.
Larry Tee made fun of the name change by calling him Geraldo with a j sound. Then he said he was practicing saying it with the heraldo sound.
John Jones Wow what a dick. I never could stand him.. then and now.
I was coming here to comment the same thing.
2020: Everybody knows who is Rupaul but... who knows Geraldo?

are you still living in the past? RaPaul is no longer relevant since the late 2000s.
Dj Mejika what are you talking about rupauls drag race is super popular
Dj Mejika what?!? Where have you been hiding?!? Rupaul is very popular now. He has Drag Race, Drag Race All Stars, Great Britain Drag Race, Canada Drag Race!! Just to name a few!!

he was probably tasked to attempt to humiliate them to make them seem less cool to the public as a deterent but completely backfired by being so lame himself
This made me so happy I was entirely too young for the scene but I remember this energy in the 90s and I guess this energy is kind of coming back now

Even back then, you could totally tell Rupaul would have the world eating out of her hand one day. She's smart, funny, charismatic, personable. She really had that star quality, and she knew how to focus and harness that. She started an EMPIRE! And we love her!
Geraldo was the father of trash television.
What about Jerry Springer? He's pretty close too.
@@Dreamskater100 Jerry Springer seems to possibly have a conscience. Geraldo is basically a Trump duplicate (and supporter if you look at his statements). This is basically Fox news from the 1990s.
