You smack the watermelon to hear the sound it makes, then you say "that's a good melon". This encourages the melon and makes sure it stays ripe and delicious.

I love seeing people "spanking" melons in the grocery store. Totally right, it's the sound and feel that lets you know it's ready,. My partner hates rockmelon (Canteloupe). He can't even stand the smell of it, but I love it. Same with papaya. LOL

You should see the recipes from a few years back, when people were doing Vegan "ham" using watermelon. It was tasty, but it wasn't ham. That said, it was served hot, like ham. They had to do a LOT of dehydrating of it. IMO, just not worth it, but hey, some people have nothing but time, and extra melons.

Oh, and for big basil leaves; make sure you're not overcrowding (shop-bough fresh basil, for instance, tends to have WAY too many plants in one small container and they suffocate at the roots), and trim back occasionally as it grows, that encourages bigger growth.

I make an awesome watermelon salad when it’s the season. Watermelon chunks, red onion sliced thin, cucumbers and the Brianna’s home style blush wine vinaigrette I just add a little at a time, but it’s best when put in frig for an hour or so. It is so good!! You can omit the cucumbers but the red onion is a must.

The basil seeds I have been buying for years make two kinds of basil plants, some have smaller pointy leaves and are really leanng into the licorice flavour that some basil can have and the others have the fat round leaves and the really floral flavour that I prefer. If you're wondering if it's growing conditions or seeds, if you can buy some fresh basil with the huge leaves and put it in water till it roots, you'll find out in a couple months whether it's going to continue being big leaf or if the growing conditions are making the leaves smaller.
Also, grilled watermelon with chopped fresh mint or basil sprinkled on it afterwards is amazing.

Emmy! I saw a recipe online to make watermelon rind kimchi. Ever since I saw it I use some of the rinds for that recipe and there is still plenty for our chickens. My mom and sister are both big fans of banchan and they say watermelon rind kimchi is their favorite variety of kimchi. I would definitely recommend it! Also, you can easily make balsamic glaze by adding brown sugar to regular balsamic vinegar and reducing it down.

Hi Emmy! First I have to say seeded watermelons are so much better and better for you. My grandmother grew watermelons in her massive garden. She taught me how to find the best and sweetest watermelon. They are the most ripe when the stem turns brown and a little dry. You have to knock on it or slap it and listen for a hollow sound. Also for ones with stripes, look for the most contrast between the light and dark green. The flesh should be a deeper red, not pink. This always worked for us 😊💖

I water my basil so so much in the summer. I do live where the summer and winter air hurt your face, but I've found that my basil is happier and gives bigger leaves when it's moist and In indirect sun.
Ooh, the variety helps with leaf size too. Italian large leaf is the one I've had the best luck with for larger leaves, but I don't find the flavor as delightful as the smaller leaf varieties.

If you are growing basil in pots that's your problem. The roots get too hot. Basil also doesn't need much fertilizer, looks like some nitrogen burn. If I had to guess I'd say that's a bag of miracle grow in a pot out in direct sun with midsummer heat.

i think it'd be more fun and less unwieldy as a salad, maybe with discs of watermelon to go with the round tomato and cheese slices

I thought I was the only one who still quoted dirty dancing by saying “I carried a watermelon”. 😂🤣 This is why I love watching your videos.. You are so real and relatable!! 🙂

Thank you so much for this video. I would definitely do this as a salad. I would make a mess trying to eat this as a sandwich. I’d probably have some fresh Italian bread along with it.🥰

Watermelon goes really well with feta cheese

That looks good, but I'd probably deconstruct it and make a salad of sorts using all the ingredients. I love sliced tomatoes with lots of salt. I also salt my watermelon.🍉😊

I think (not quite sure) that pruning the basil plants in a certain way might help (I would definitely look it up and not trust my comment however! But my friend who knows about plants told me about pruning an edible leaf plant a certain way so they don't get stalk-y)

I make mind with Violife vegan feta cheese, basil and Bitchin' Sauce Original. No balsamic I spread the bitchin’ sauce on both ides like mayo. Delicious!

Thinner slices and Balsamic glaze makes it so much better and easier to eat .
