Hello! Wow, thank you so much for such an honest and detailed review. Really outstanding. I would love to play a short clip of this in a video in a future episode, would that be ok with you? Naturally I will give full accreditation and a link in the description to your channel. Please keep up the great work and enjoy your RM! Onwards and upwards. Best regards, TGV
Thank you for your compliment, TGV. Coming from you, it's very encouraging! I'd be happy for you to use a clip - no problem. I'll have a full review of the RM coming out soon-ish (next week or two), so there may be some good things to grab there too. I don't have fancy equipment, but there will surely some new shots and thoughts. I appreciate the creative effort you put into this watch...In fact, you inspired me to start creating my own face design - something I've been intending to do for some time.
I’ve had mine for a week now. The dial is outstanding…very visible and the sharp point on the minute hand is my favorite part. I can only hear the Miyota rotor when my ear is really close to the watch. The winding feels a little grainy, but this is my first Miyota, so maybe that’s normal for these. My only real disappointment is that the bracelet isn’t a true 3 piece link, even though they appear to be. Overall I love this watch and love the way it wears. Definitely a keeper for me. I’m looking forward to years of enjoying it.
Congrats! The winding on my RM is on par with the rest of my Miyota movement. No - it's not as smooth as my Swiss/French movements...but I'm not too picky on the winding, as I almost never wind my watches. Agreed on the 3-piece thing....I assume it's a cost-tradeoff consideration, as all of my 3-piece bracelets are on watches that cost more than this. Cheers!
A great watch and a great review. I just love the whole 38mm package: the thinness, the SS finish, the hands, the markers, the spaced minute track, the lume, the 24hr chapter ring, the bezel, the crown, the bracelet & clasp; I mean, what more can be said! Has anyone mentioned a likely rerelease, or if it having drilled lugs might also be possible?
Bought this watch to wear as my daily driver. Once I got the bracelet sized correctly, I almost couldn’t tell I was even wearing it. Nice review, I just happened upon it and figured I’d take a look.
I have #210 of the 500 made. I wear it everyday its comfortable and the legibility is awesome. The bezel is brushed which is a big plus. Wish it had a better bracelet and lume and the noisy Miyota movement is kinda irritating 🤷🏾♂️
I'm really glad you were able to show it directly with the Smiths Everest, that was great. It's the other watch with a 3,6,9 dial in this price range that I've considered buying (though it's not been in stock). Great video, thanks!
Really nice review! Stumbled across your channel because of the watch (I have one on the way) and stayed because of your presentation. Informative and down to earth. Kind of like "regular guy buys watch and chats about it" including likes and dislikes. Well done. You also helped me get over the case of buyer's remorse I was starting to come down with. 👍 Looking forward to future videos.
Thank you, my friend! I'm still trying to figure out my tone...weird to be in front of a camera. Hey - if you end up with buyers remorse, check the listings on eBay...they'll turn your frown upside down!
I've been wearing an ISL-82 Mitchell for a while before getting the ISL-153, so the circuit logo doesn't phase me quite as much. Have this Rangemaster on a Wrist Candy Watch Club "Valor" NATO strap also designed by TGV. The black, gray, and touch of red are reflected between the strap, dial, and rehaut, and the steel blue brings a bit more subtle color.
I think asking the question - Will this have an identity crisis? - re: the stepped dual finish lugs suggests there there is indeed something of an identity crisis at play. It’s probably my only knock on the watch, as an observer. My wish for v2 would be for a case closer to the Tudor Ranger. Like a brushed version of the case Islander uses on their “Manhasset” line, with subtle polishing included.
1St off I was happy to hear that this review was is not from the inner circle, so thank you. my comments are before I receive my watch, I have one on order as I've been looking for explorer style watch that is affordable. I agree Mark's logo is kind of cartoonish (sorry Mark) I would have preferred a display back and that fold over clasp is not for me but I'm willing to give it a chance. I would be willing to spend more for better movement, a better clasp and display back. Your review has lots of detail, I also like to know how much it weights and a lume shoot would be complete the review. Thank you for doing this review and can't wait to get my watch!
Not sure on the weight...but plan on weighing all my watches soon. I usually prefer a display back, but in this case ---- the thinness of the watch is one of it's main selling points. Cheers!
They were aware of the original Tudor ranger, Tudor rereleased the ranger just before this watch dropped. It draws inspiration from a few watches and brands.
I think the logo placement and execution kills this watch. Islander logo is awkward and looks incomplete. The tgv logo also looks weird on the dial, In my opinion tgv logo should have been on the caseback only and the Islander logo needs to be redesigned.
I am a fan of the two guys but unfortunately I am not a fan of this watch. I do not like Mark’s logo, the hands and font. When you compare the Seiko’s and Smiths to the Ranger it really makes it look sub par. Again, I like the guys and their channels, but I have to give honest feedback.
I missed out but congratulations and great review. (Something tells me they might bring a version of this back due to the unexpected and unanimous popularity.)
In my opinion the dial is a hot mess, but some how i like it.. I just wish the TGV logo was on top and just a larger Islander text on the bottom with 200m and self winding.. may a 12 instead of that large trophism.. to much islander logos.
If the self-winding was under Marks island logo i think the balance would be better. The dial feels bottom heavy giving an impression that watch is upside down. Strange. Good looking piece otherwise
Agreed, the TGV logo should be on the top. I would argue they could have left off the Islander logo completely. The log is already on the crown and to be honest, not that attractive.
I've actually reversed my opinion on this. As it is a collaboration, I think it's fitting that the Islander logo be above the TGV logo. I do wish Marc would change his logo though...
To be honest, I've never really cared about lume (some of my favorite watches don't have it at all). For visibility in the dark, I prefer tritium or Indiglo or digital w/ backlight. I like going through tunnels with lume though! I should probably consider including in future videos though - other folks seem to care.
@@whichwatch4031 - Good lume is awesome. I love being to read the watch in poor lighting conditions. ...especially on a tool watch like this one. On a dress watch, it doesn't matter much
This "knob logo" will keep me away from buying any Islander. I really like both guys and this collab would have been enough of a reason to buy one, but damn ... won't happen.
I watch marks vids and Im sure I will buy one of his watches one day. But i much prefer a logo that is a small long island like the shark on the heimdallr or LIW.
Yeah - I was considering the same thing --- though the shape of Long Island isn't immediately recognizable to most people. I'm going to mockup up a few logo ideas and maybe issue a design challenge on this channel. Stay tuned!
They've obviously gone for an explorer vibe here. It feels like they started off with an explorer design and just made a bunch of weird design decisions to make it look different to the explorer. The arabic numerals look weird with the angular cuts, the indices look weird (just compare to the explorer) and the bezel is comically large here. Yeah the watch-on-watch logo is dumb - the lion logo looks a lot better and the font they use for "lslander" is nice - they shoudl have used that up top. This handset reminds me of the Tudor Ranger - probably because it is exactly the same as the Tudor Ranger. It's an homage watch, homaging the tudor ranger and the rolex explorer.
The circle logo kills this watch, which is a shame because everything else is pretty nice. Standard bracelet Mark puts on his watches, not great but better than Seiko’s. This watch could have been great, but Mark is not willing to budge on his silly logo.
If there is anything I hate, its a review of a watch that's not available at the time the review was made. This watch sold out in less than a day! I've expressed my displeasure to Marc and TGV about limited edition watches in general. To me, watching a review of a watch that is sold out is a waste of my time. Nice watch, wish I could have gotten one!
I still feel that Urban Gentry should not do a homage that the original is available, a vintage homage may be. But may be it does not matter over time when all will become unavailable brand new.
Hats off to the enterprising nature of the watch's release - but isn't it something of a true Frankenstein as it appears to be so clearly the parts of other watches we all know put together?
Yeah - there's truth in that...though most watches fall into this category. And then some veer too far away from the accepted mold and end up being too "out there." Uniqueness/originality is definitely more important for some and less for others.
@@whichwatch4031 if it makes a buyer happy, we should all be happy! I suspect you are correct as most watches are just… watches. That Islander logo. I'd have two or three of Marc's watches if it weren't for that. It's frustrating he's so stubborn about it. Oh, well. For that reason alone I'd wear the Smiths 100% of the time over the Rangemaster.

I love pretty much everything about it but I'd see the islander and TGV family crest inverted as you suggested.
Congratulations. I hope you have better luck than me on impulse watch purchases. The only watches I’ve ever sold were impulsive purchases.

Your GS is gorgeous. As for the Islander logo, it would like nicer if they wrote Islander on the dial and keep the logo on the crown imo.
