I hear what you're saying with Seiko having generated and developed the product but it can be said the Long Island Watch was part of that success. Seko dive watches were their best selling models and then the manufacturer let them know those watches are being discontinued... well, they developed a good replacement for those dive watches that weren't going to be coming from Seiko any longer. I wish those ISL's were available in South Africa! They pack a punch way above their cost! Plus Mark is just a super nice dude so id rather support him than a soulless company.
I was gifted a Seiko Willard homage by Stealdive as the previous owner purchased the Seiko Willard… I really like the Stealdive and for a $1,000 savings… it’s an amazing alternative!
Great head-to-head comparison Russell! Thanks for broaching the subject; I know some folk get really fired up over this at times (in both good and bad ways)
Great review...you have quickly become my favorite watch channel! I understand completely what you are saying about the intangibles of the Seiko over the Islander....which is why I bought both. 😂 Marc is a great guy at LIW, so I am happy to support his small business. Cheers!
I have the SKX009 and the 007. They were two of my early purchases when I first was really getting into collecting. I have four ‘Islanders’ in my collection. In my opinion Mark’s watches are better in EVERY way. Mark produces the SKX that we all wanted… And in my case modded, the SKX to be! Thanks Russ!
Thanks for this fun video...keep up the great work! I can personally attest to the excellent customer service Marc provides. If you buy from him, he WILL make sure you are taken care of should any issues arise. I have purchased two watches from Island watch. The first was an Orient Ray (black), and the second was a Spinnaker Fleuss. The Spinny turned out to be defective, and Marc responded to my email within a hour or two. Unfortunately he was out of stock so couldn't immediately replace the Fleuss. I decided to go for an Islander #ISL-10 instead (which was actually a more expensive watch), and he threw in an extra strap. Well the ISL-10 turned out to be a way better looking and more comfy watch anyway, so I am glad this happened. Go ahead and buy an Islander...you will be happy!!!!!
When you showed the long island watch page at the end it was out of stock, did make I chuckle, it's definitely copying the skx 😂😂. Great vid as always, as enjoyable as it was informative 👍👍
I feel like I've missed the boat on the SKX, I do have an SPRD, and I did look at the ISL stuff as well as some other homages and although they do offer a value proposition over the SKX, I feel something that's unquantifiable is somehow lost in translation.
What a great review this one Russell, its amazing watching your work evolve with every video. Difficult comparison this time, Marc being such a gentleman and the SKX being such an icon, but you nailed it. Now I want both.
Love this vid! I Wana see a 3 way comparison: Rolex explorer II “ Steve McQueen”, the modern anniversary model Rolex explorer II and the Homage Steinhart ocean GMT
We all know that the majority of the money we spend on watches is for brand recognition. But I get the most compliments on my Hot Pink Dial Invicta Pro Diver. It's definitely a conversation starter.
I have the Islander with a stark white dial, and Batman blue and black bezel. It's stunning, I love it, I get compliments on it, and I'll eventually get the SKX, but I'm satisfied with the Islander as it stands on it's own.
@@THEMADWATCHCOLLECTOR it was perfectly pitched as far as I can see. You said it is a superb watch for the value but purists will want the original, can't be more honest than that !
@@THEMADWATCHCOLLECTOR I agree here. Your delivery is spot on and no doubt people will relate. Was it the A-Team theme song on Watch roll on the go? 👍😀
@THE MAD WATCH COLLECTOR £60 for mine, but I believe it's calculated on the retail amount from where its sent, all my watches that have been sent from Creation I've only paid £6 royal mail, but creations postage invoice shows less for the item, It could be how they get round customs ?
Have to say I really enjoyed this episode mate. Great to see the comparison of what can be achieved in a homage. I'm like you I love the history behind a company which makes owning and wearing a watch a bit more special. Long Islander watches done an amazing job however and from a price point great value 👍👌 well done as always mate 👍
Another fascinating video, thank you. I agree with you on Seiko heritage. Nonetheless, I really like Marc’s watches and, more importantly, Marc as a person. So, I did the next best thing… I bought a SKX007 from Marc and then had him mod it for me with a flat sapphire crystal, sapphire bezel insert and Strapcode bracelet. I wanted to retain the original look of the SKX and the only thing that I changed was for a coin-edged bezel as I did not want to damage the original bezel and insert. Marc even pressure tested the watch and provided a printed confirmation. The Islander is definitely still on my shopping list and the only trouble is selecting which one to buy. 😊
That wasn't even close at all, would really like to see more of marcs watches put up against seikos in this series. Awesome work mate and very enjoyable 😄
I don't know if other viewers have noticed but your Mr Pagani character reminds me of the actor Oliver Reed. He has the same type of voice and actions, especially when he has a few drinks inside him!
The SKX has always been an anomoly...an icon in it's own right, and at the same time, very poorly specced for the price (not to mention alignment issues). Marc gave this icon the specs it has always deserved. The fact that this has been accomplished by a genuine enthusiast is icing on the cake.
Another great review Russell! Thanks! I'm a big fan of Islander Watches, Marc is doing a great job over there! You should check out the ISL-54! (yes I've said this to you before, but will keep bugging you until I hear you've checked it out! 😜). Keep it up! All the best!
Thank you for your statistical review. I am a Siko FN too; mostly from tradition. But the Islander is truly bang for the buck if you're looking for a true tool watch without brand loyalty 🤣😊😉
I’m a bit new to this so be gentle if this is a stupid question. Can I buy an islander watch in the UK? If so do we have to pay an import duty and expensive carriage? Or is there a UK distributor?
Yes you would have to pay import duty my friend it’s about 50/60 pounds. Conversion rate the watch bought from the website is about £220 . With import tax it would still just be under £300 which is still a good price
Thank you Russell. You said it all at the end. Can't beat a watch brand and reputation no matter what better specs you put on it. I like Mark and he certainly have quality watches, but it is an Islander, not a Seiko.
Nice comparison Russell. I agree with your conclusion, although the homage is well done and has some better specs, it can never compete with the original and its history. Besides, I don't like the Pepsi colors and in general it winks too much at the crowned house. Seiko forever.
Very good, relevant comparison Russ. Many collectors thinking about the same. Frankly i would now go for Marc’s SKX watch over buying another SKX. SKX Mod parts fit Marc’s cases as well so you can continue to mod away to your hearts content and even stick a seiko branded dial in it (though that would create a whole new debate about authenticity!)
Fantastic, and very entertaining, review (I really enjoyed it). Clearly, in terms of specs, the Islander wins soundly. But, that logo on the dial though 😬...just not feeling that at all. But, otherwise appears to be a solid watch. Anyway, much respect to LIW. They really are a great company and I love their products. I've purchased a couple of bracelets and sapphires from them, and have always been impressed with the product and customer service. Again, loved this review and I clicked the subscribe button. Kind regards.
Awesome comparison MWC! Makes me wonder how an Islander would stack up against a 5KX. Probably very similar outcome to this head to head but certainly interesting. I really like what Marc is doing with the Islander range,. Obviously it doesn’t have the history or heritage of a brand like Seiko but there’s no denying the specs for the money are great! This video reminds me that I really do need to add an Islander to my collection at some point 💸😂
I like Marc's watches and enjoy his channel and his guesting. His SKX homage watches look good, given I have both the 007 and 009 there will be no need to get the homage.....I really enjoy both of my SKX divers such awesome watches and I wanted them because they are Seiko and iconic and not homages so I agree with you.
You have a good point, choosing the SEIKO over the islander because of the history. But since the SKX is discontinued, it has gotten extremely expensive. The islander on the other hand, is only $300 from the website. Pair that with much better specs, I feel like I would go with the islander every single time. And if the Islanders few years of history cause it to only last a decade or so? Then at the end of the day it was only a $300 purchase and it’s paid itself off more than once.
With Islander Watches.. Yes!.. Marc is a real watch ADDICT!..You know He wants to produce the best watch He can..and all He does is improve where He can, I'm not into a lot of "homage" brands.. But with Islander it almost feels like buying off a Friend! My Islander is such a good watch..my daily wearer at this moment in time.. Amazing quality for the price!

Nice comparison mate. I like that you left brand and price out of it, so it was more of an even playing field to compare them. I always knew the Islander watch would win this fight. What would be interesting though is seeing it up against say a Steeldive or Heimdallr etc. I don't have personal experience with Islander watches myself, but I do have other homages which I think are pretty dam good for the money.
Fabulous Video mate. I really respect your love of brand heritage. I get that it’s one of the most important things to you. Myself I don’t really care. Yeah the back story and history is all nice, but I don’t really care. I do agree with you on this occasion though. I’d take the Seiko over the Islander. But just because I think it’s a nicer looking watch. 😅👌
Cheers Joe! Loved history as a boy and I also love delving into a brands lifespan y’know, then I become more attached to a piece . Very hard for me to fall for a brand that is brand new. I don’t think I ever have ! Sinn, Squale, Seiko, Rolex even Casio , rich history, loads of watches helping them (hopefully) perfecting the craft! Can totally get someone just liking a good watch though Joe!;)
Mark has thought of every little tweak to give The ISL just what we would’ve loved in the Seiko. Both great watches though and obvs the SKX is a well loved classic. Your Sarb looks great on that strap btw!
Seiko may have more history to show off but Mark has worked on the F-14 and does the watch world a big favor with his watch-and-learn videos. I wouldn't pick the ISL-49 but i'd always prefer an islander over the SKXes. And your score table tells me i'm right. Thanks for the lovely video, though. 👍
The mental gymnastics required to "make an exception" for Islander is hilarious to watch. My position is simpler. Copying a watch legally, is perfectly okay. The market gets to decide if it is worthwhile or not. The Islander SKX is excellent, as is the SteelDive 6105. I like them all.
I’ve had some of these other lesser homages in the hands my friend such as the Loreo submariner . Literally it is a logo away from being a copy fake ! Even had superlative chronometer on the dial!!!!
Seiko got me into collecting watches, but I just received my first Islander and have to say I’m really impressed. I guess my biggest complaint with Seiko is that you’d better have your money in hand when they release something you like because they seem to change the lineup faster than I can gather the funds.
Hahaha well I agree my friend with the last part!;) his love for Seiko is obvious to all. Without the SKX , the Islander would not exist. It’s a Homage no doubt Sunny ;)
Ok, I don't own either watch. I own two Seikos and like them. I don't own a Long Island watch. I would run to the Islander. Run! Not even a contest. Now I have to decide if I go for the Ford Pinto or the Tesla. Decisions... Decisions.
Great review. Thanks Russell!!!!

Seems like a great guy Marc and all the effort he goes into with his watches is fantastic
I was gifted a Seiko Willard homage by Stealdive as the previous owner purchased the Seiko Willard… I really like the Stealdive and for a $1,000 savings… it’s an amazing alternative!
It is my friend, having reviewed a Steel dive it did not stop me from buying an SPB153;) it made me want the Seiko more
The ISL web page you show says "Out of stock". MWC you did it again 👏 😆
Oh dear!!! I’m sure that’s not the case hahahahaha however it’s a darn good watch!
Great head-to-head comparison Russell! Thanks for broaching the subject; I know some folk get really fired up over this at times (in both good and bad ways)
Thanks Jason! It’s a show that had to be done and I hope I have a balanced view!
Islander all the way. What a FUN video! Thanks for the thorough review!
Great review...you have quickly become my favorite watch channel! I understand completely what you are saying about the intangibles of the Seiko over the Islander....which is why I bought both. 😂 Marc is a great guy at LIW, so I am happy to support his small business. Cheers!
Well said Moses and thank you! There is room to love both 100%! Thank you for your continued support!
Thanks for watching and for your input my friend!
That’s the power I have even before the show is released! The hype is real!!!;)
Excellent job 👍👍 love the blue and red together I would have the Seiko as it’s a classic
Thanks for watching Derek!!!
Love Marc’s watches, very classy, but, I still fall into the Seiko camp for he same reasons. Great episode. Cheers 👍🏴
Cheers Jim! I think you can like both ;)
This is an epic episode.
That appreciates innovation (islander) and golden heritage (sieko skx).
Magnificent.
Thank you for your comment my friend appreciate this a lot!
I feel like I've missed the boat on the SKX, I do have an SPRD, and I did look at the ISL stuff as well as some other homages and although they do offer a value proposition over the SKX, I feel something that's unquantifiable is somehow lost in translation.
I hear you my friend! I could not fault the Islander at all! Great watch ! You saw my views;)
Love Marc's watches. I'm wearing my "wave" right now. Incredible lume and so comfortable.
Congrats my friend wear it in good health!
What a great review this one Russell, its amazing watching your work evolve with every video. Difficult comparison this time, Marc being such a gentleman and the SKX being such an icon, but you nailed it. Now I want both.
Hahahahaha thank you my friend!
Id say that ISL is what 5KX was supposed to be. A slightly better looking dial with 200m WR and screw down crown.
Great point my friend!
@@THEMADWATCHCOLLECTOR For soome reason every single time I read your comment I read it in your voice and its amazing hahahahaha. Love you bud! 🙏❤️
Absolutely my friend! I need to see this watch!
The Islander is a very good and affordable quality watch, the SKX is a legend.
Brilliant comparison and summary of these watches!
Thanks Maro!!!
I have the Islander with a stark white dial, and Batman blue and black bezel. It's stunning, I love it, I get compliments on it, and I'll eventually get the SKX, but I'm satisfied with the Islander as it stands on it's own.
I think I'd do the same Russell. You'd still want the original. If you got one secondhand you could put a saphire crystal in it if/when it needed it.
Cheers Dale! Think it came across ok? This subject can always be spicy !
@@Watch4Jay yes Jason! It’ll be 80’s themed I think from now on!;) thank you! As always this is a hot debate !;)
@@THEMADWATCHCOLLECTOR 80s themed? You speakah muh language!
You have to do the caseback comparison again with the Islander’s new dive watch casebacks!!
These videos are soooo good man. Great stuff!
Thanks for watching my friend!
Couldn’t agree more, there is no doubt that Islander is better on paper, but the SKX just has something the Islander doesn’t.
Seiko prices no matter the “history” hace gone bonkers sorry but not sorry will not pay those prices and buying them second hand…. Love your show!
Great comparison. I love my Islander, the isl18, and the spec you get. I'd like to get more. it's such a shame the import charges are so expensive
Yes I hear you on the charges Russell! What is it 50 quid on top?
Awesome video, great comparison review between two great time pieces
Thank you for watching my friend!
SOOOOPER! REVIEW MY FRIEND , LOVED IT!
Hahaha there is a few to choose from! Thank you for this Eddie!
Nice pilots style watch my friend! Will investigate further!!! Cheers Ben!!
Where did you find that unicorn seiko? It's perfectly aligned!
Hahahahaha
Great video, thank you!
A bit like America VS the UK...... Of course the remake is better*
*Comments made under the influence of alcohol.
Thank you for your statistical review. I am a Siko FN too; mostly from tradition. But the Islander is truly bang for the buck if you're looking for a true tool watch without brand loyalty 🤣😊😉
What is your your wrist size? Mine is 6.5 inch and idk if 43mm islander would look big or fine. What you think?
6 and a half inches ! The diameter isn’t the issue man it’s the lug to lug and this one is very short ! Do it!!
@@THEMADWATCHCOLLECTOR You mean the 38mm? I'm thinking of the 43mm islander with 46mm lug to lug, big for my skinny wrist?
@@ctrangedemon no I meant the 43 my friend. It’s an SKX 009 case isn’t basically . Will fit great
@@THEMADWATCHCOLLECTOR okay thanks! subbed!
@@THEMADWATCHCOLLECTOR thank you for taking the time to reply. For a lovely looking watch like that under £300 seems a great price to me.
Thank you Russell. You said it all at the end. Can't beat a watch brand and reputation no matter what better specs you put on it. I like Mark and he certainly have quality watches, but it is an Islander, not a Seiko.
I love my old skx007, it would be interesting to see an Islander in the flesh, if the watch is anything like Mark, it will be a top notch watch
Thanks Mike! It’s been great getting to know this watch over the last couple of weeks. Take care my friend!
@@THEMADWATCHCOLLECTOR you're so right about that bracelet too. SO COMFY and sturdy
Islander watches are all amazing. They are better an Seiko watches. Soon to be better than Grand Seiko too.
Hahahahaha well Mark needs to take a couple of courses in siratzu polishing first!
Nice comparison Russell. I agree with your conclusion, although the homage is well done and has some better specs, it can never compete with the original and its history. Besides, I don't like the Pepsi colors and in general it winks too much at the crowned house. Seiko forever.
My thoughts to my friend. As a watch on its own it is very good .
Hahahahaha woah steady Dom!;) you could have a riot on your hands!!!!;) well said my friend!
Glen appreciate this a lot! It’s been a pleasure having an Islander for a couple of weeks!
Great show Russ, really like what Marc is doing with his Islanders 👍 And yes a homage can give the real deal a run for it´s money no doubt.
Cheers for watching and the support Chris!
Points to you if you get a badminton reference in Pagani sketch. Badminton > volleyball (and tennis of course)
I so will do a badminton one Gordon!!!!!
Casio dbc-32?
I have been saying it for years; Marc offers great value and quality in his Islander watches! Having said that, my own SKX013 isn't going anywhere! 😄
Right?!! Absolutely Gareth!
Great comments here my friend! Thanks for the support!
This is a great comment my friend and one I wholeheartedly agree with! P.s. my daughter and I absolutely love Mr Magoo!
@@THEMADWATCHCOLLECTOR Well I must say it seems Yourself & Your Daughter have impeccable Taste!.. Hehehe.. My names McGhee so I've been stuck with Magoo since School lol.. I adore the Cartoon too tbh😎😁
@@mrmagoo.3678 how ironic! My wife’s maiden name was the same. She too had the same nick name 😆
@@THEMADWATCHCOLLECTOR SERIOUS!?..Maaan!..Us McGhee's/Magoo's are thinly spread too! .. Not too many of us about!😵 Nuts!.. Well ..what can I say?..Your Wife is a lucky Lady, She has a Daughter with a Good Man..AND She's lucky enough to be counted with the Magoo's!😎🍾 Shockin' 😵😵
Cheers James!
Heard you humming the A-Team theme song. Guessing your favorite A-Team member was Murdock?
I've been saying suuuupa round the office hahaha brilliant video
Yes David!!!!
LOL The fact that the pepsi one is imatating the seiko. Must respect to Seiko.
Mark has thought of every little tweak to give The ISL just what we would’ve loved in the Seiko. Both great watches though and obvs the SKX is a well loved classic. Your Sarb looks great on that strap btw!
Cheers Nelson! He has indeed and should be proud of what he’s produced!
I've been very impressed with the in-house watches at Long Island watches.
Absolutely my friend!!
@@THEMADWATCHCOLLECTOR that crosses the line, doesn't it? Not one of taste but of trademark.
@@SheshankReddyS I know?!?!
Seiko got me into collecting watches, but I just received my first Islander and have to say I’m really impressed. I guess my biggest complaint with Seiko is that you’d better have your money in hand when they release something you like because they seem to change the lineup faster than I can gather the funds.
Marc's Long island watches aren't homage, but just only inspired from SKX and he is making them much better and perfect.
Decisions.
Not sure this hit the intended mark my friend!;) but I’m looking into getting a Tesla!!!
I have a SKX009 Pepsi and a ISL01 and ISL18 love them all equally
Excellent my friend!
