That’s definitely something I missed in this video and yeah it’s a big one. I can see a lot of people being bothered by it (I was at first) but using the Q2 has made me more accustomed to not having a joystick
I pulled the trigger and ordered a A7cII yesterday as i really like the small form factor and the updates compared to the A7IV. Listed my A7IV for sale yesterday as well. Looking forward to the mail on monday or tuesday more likely. 😀
I've been waiting to see someone pair the silver baseplate on the silver camera, wanted to see what it looked like. THANK YOU, it looks awesome and feels like the best way to add just enough while maintaining the compact size (and the cool dual tone flair)!
Your video definitely convinced me. I don't think I'll ever need the 61MP of an R, and I rather keep the low-light performance. And that Smallrig base plate makes it look so beautiful. Thank you for putting this video together!
Ergonomics, 2SD slots, lack of customisable function buttons and a better EVF lost it for me. As a videographer, the flimsy micro HDMI is another no no for me. Specs are great tho! wish they did more with it for being a camera in 2023. Keeping my a7IV probably for the next a7V or A7SIV.
Agree. It was a super hard decision, and the form factor alone almost did it for me, but the A7IV isn’t THAT much heavier (like 100g) and it just feels better to use, all technical aspects aside.
same here, I prefer the size. I think the most important factor is that I am not using it for work, just for entertainment. I did notice a7cii heat up easily compared to a7iv.
Coming from a A6400 I picked up a ZVE10 with a 9 shutter count for £350, for my content creation work, and was so hooked on getting the A7IV for my professional work, also with the joystick, but seeing this has sparked a new interest, also being a lover of vintage cameras the silver is a breath of fresh air, and you have actually switched me from the a7iv to getting a A7Cii, so the joystick is not an issue since coming from A6400 and funny enough its cheaper so win win! amazing video and work, just subscribed and excited to binge more of your content!
Great video mate, was tossing up between the A7iv and the A7cii as our hybrid shooter and think i'm swaying towards the A7cii. Much smaller form factor and more features, seems like a no brainer as it's cheaper!
Jealous of that Leica. One of the big reasons I got the A7C II is because it's like a Sony version of the Leica. Whilst also being able to shoot incredible video whenever I need it to.
I just made this swap too. I don't use a focus joystick, so the swap was fine for me. I have an extender on below when I have a bigger lens and want more grip, but often pair this with a 40mm G lens and use it for street and on the go photography. The added benefit for travel and wight is why I moved from a Nikon DLSR to a mirrorless camera, so I feel like this camera lets you double down on that tech, IMO.
Nice video. It's interesting to hear reasons to get the A7c II other than the ones you have yourself (oneself I mean), I recently sold my A9 because while I really enjoyed its AF and operational speed and Z-batteries (my other camera is an a7rii) and very viable e-shutter I could not fit it in a jacket pocket (with a small lens) (unlike say an A6000) and I never utilized the blackout free continuous. My main reason for purchasing the A7C ii (which is more expensive than the A7iv here) is the physical shape, a secondary one is more AF recognition modes (if not better AF overall perhaps), some more resolution with kinda the same low light capabilities and lossless compressed. I had never considered aspect ratio visibility in camera : )
I sold my Fuji X2 which I loved for form factor and regretted it. I too own the a7IV and have contemplated the same move but to the R model. AND THEN…the a79 III blow us all away! Now we want global shutter in a7C R and I’m on it!
Great Video. I've been thinking of upgrading from aps-c Sony ZV-e10 to Full Frame. I use the sigma 16mm f1.4 pretty much all the time because of the focal length. What lens would you suggest that won't break the bank, but give me a clean image for video and a blurry background at or around the same focal length? I like to punch in when I ediet my video to show close-ups of safety razors going across my face. Very critical that it's as crisp as possible. One of the reasons why I want to jump into full frame with 10bit 4.2.2 just to get a little sharper image. Think this camera might be perfect for me. I do a podcast that goes sometimes two hours so the ZV- e1 is out due to overheating. Which is a shame because that is the same body. My current camera is using. Any recommendations will be greatly appreciated?
I have owned the A7IV since its release. I think the case of the CII is much nicer. I really like the look. If it were just based on the looks of the camera, that would sell my a7IV. I take a lot of photos using the viewfinder and the viewfinder of the CII is not good, and I would have liked the functional display of the A7RV. They could have brought both. Now I'm waiting for the A7V.

Actually in my country A7C-II is the same price as A7IV with cashback. But... for me everything that came up in A7C-II wins over what that camera doesn't have (faster card, better EVF, etc.). It's like mini A7RV and I accept that.
Bro!! I just got the a7cii and the only problem I had was grip was too small but not by much. That being said i love everything about the camera & didn’t want to add a large grip adaptor and seeing your base plate it looks like the perfect/fix solution.
Thanks for this. I've been thinking aboit upgrading my A7RII for a while now and now I shoot a lot ot video this seems like an ideal upgrade as i still want to keep decent resolution for photos.
Seeing at first a7cii + zeiss 55 - great combo - wish to have 2slots + joystick, better viewfinder and that's a fantastic combo! better than rest of cameras..Great choice
I've missed my a7iv so much since I sold it but finally got myself an A7Cii after waiting for local stock to arrive. I'd say it's one of the best compact cams for photo and video that can be used as a pro cam as well.

Is this better to get right now or wait for a new a7ciii release, I have the Canon R5 its big, I have a RF 15 to 35 2.8 and a 50 mm 1.8 Canon, what do you think I need something lighter? What would you be getting? Then I can keep the R5 for rhe big wildlife stuff and use the A7cii for street travel.
I mainly use big zoom lenses and thought i would need a bigger body/deeper grip (a7iv) but ended up walking out of the camera store with the A7CII, not disappointed at all.
For me small not always means better, the A7iv has already a very compact body, the cii it’s too small for me, also the lack of 2 cards slot, a worse evf, a micro hdmi and lack of customisable buttons it’s a no no, as a professional I wouldn't use a camera with only one card slot. For who has only one body and already has an a7 iv i don’t justify the change, you gain certain things with the cii but loose others which for me are more important than a slightly better autofocus and questionable smaller form factor
So many professionals have and still use cameras with one card slots, that’s not the end all be all you make it seem to be 😂 like I said, it’s not for everyone. But it’s more than just slightly better autofocus
@@amandeepanand9972 my main lens for video is the 16-35mm f/4 PZ. Doesn’t feel bulky. Now I also use the Sony 24-70 GM II and the Tamron 70-180mm for photos. Those feel bulky on the A7cii 🙂

How is the EVF? I went from the original A7c to the A7iv because of the horrible EVF. Not sure if the increased magnification stacks up. Is it worth going back?
I returned the A7C II after thinking about how I would use the camera in favor of the A7R V. I do agree it is a better, more well rounded hybrid camera. But, I already have the A7C. The AI tracking would be nice but Sony has nailed focus for many years. So, for me, I just want all the megapixels. I rarely shoot video on my big camera anyway - opting for my smartphone instead (yeah, I know). My smartphone (iPhone 14 Pro Max) is my push for the A7R V since it is "good enough" for most cases, so I need a big camera worthy of the effort of getting all that stuff out and lugging it around - 61mp does that for me. I normally shoot landscape and will dabble with astro-landscape once I figure out how to setup my star tracker.
I'm still very confused on whether to pick A7IV or A7CII I'm moving from APS-C to my first full frame and can only buy one. I love the form factor and the design of the A7Cii but I can't decide if the lack of dual SD card slot is a big enough reason to pick one over the other. Probably one of the most important decisions in my career(I'm still in my early career). I need advice as I am going to do professional photoshoots.
A7IV if ur going professional. The extra buttons, dual cards, full hdmi and larger evf and grip will go a long way. Not to mention better cooling due to bigger body will help a lot in longer shoots.
I own a Sony A7iv already and have been looking for a B cam once I have sold my Sony A7iii. I was looking to grab the Sony A7R V to have along side my A7iv. However, I'm loving the look and small body form factor of the Sony A7c ii. I think thanks to your video I'm loving the look of the small rig silver add on. I'm now leaning more towards the Sony A7c ii as I will not need to purchase a second CF Express type A card for the Sony A7R V and I would save more money by having the Sony 7C ii along side the Sony A7iv coupled with at least another new prime lens with the money I'd save. What are your thoughts ?
Very thankful for such beautiful explanation!!! Can you help me with choosing between Sony A7c2 and Sony Fx30? I want a hybrid camera, with less overheating issues and main purpose is creating travel reel videos and photographs. 4k 60 fps is must.
@@JonnyRoams Thanks for the speedy reply. I'm looking at the Sony fx3 for long-form content. Other than that, the zve1 is a solid camera. I'm still undecided 😆
I just can’t afford a camera for photos and a camera for videos, even though I’d love to. Therefore, I need to have the best hybrid camera possible (Sony). Do you think the A7CII is the best option right now? I’m more into videos but still need to have the stills option
I have a Canon 5d mrk4 ... I want to switch for low light video and stills.... but I still don't know which to get A7iv , Fx3 or Cii because I want to do both.... suggestions please
Hi Jonny, I know this would be a guess, but working with this camera, do you think this camera would be as good tracking a motorcycle as it does your Jeep? I am currently a Fuji shooter and I am struggling with autofocus especialy when the bike is coming towards or away from camera. Oh and how's the focus between the FX30 and A7c ii?
im about to sell my xt5 just for a a7cii! Regarding about the shooting exp you mentioned, wouldn't a fuji be a better fit since SOOC jpeg is already that good.
great, thanks. - I used both and sold my 7IV … because I dont‘t do jobs with it anymore, only private stuff. workhorse: 7IV. better looking (personal opinion), af, a little bit smaller: 7CII.
hey, I have a question for you because I heard that the Sony a7c ii is "more plastic" than the first version a7c, something like the zv e1. Does this only apply to the black version or is the silver version also made of the same material as the black one?
For someone getting into the hobby would this be a good way to start? Do you need 2 card slots fpr hobbisty or a full hdmi? I wish sony would just come out with the a7v. Everybody is r aleasing new cameras and it seems like sony is sleeping.
I really want the a7c ii because if the ai stuff but the a7iv has 2 sd card slots and "better viewfinder". I just don't know what to do. Wish the A7C II had 2 sd card slots... Is there a work around?
Hey, can someone that owns the A7Cii tell me what MB size ranges the 3 Lossless Compressed sizes are when it comes to brackets? Could someone fire a quick test? Shoot 3 brackets 2 stops apart with the Lossless Compressed L, M, and S and tell me those numbers?
Kind of. I put a huge value in the improved AI autofocus. If you can overlook the flaws in the viewfinder and ergonomics, I think it’s better than the a7iv. But to each their own
Good video. I’ve also been split between the A74 and A7cii for photography. But you didn’t mention in the video that you mostly use the screen, not the EVF. For me as a photographer I use the EVF most of the time, and the A7cii’s EVF is just not good, especially for a body in 2023. It could have been the Leica Q killer if that EVF was as good.
Can you help? I have around 2k budget and my initial idea is to buy the a6700 + 35mm 1.4 GM (FE) i can get both at around 2,2k. Would you get the a6700 which is croped but full of new great features, or the old a7c? Which I can buy at the same price as the first a7c?
A ciencia de cor dela é melhor do que a da A7iv? Mesmo compartilhando o mesmo sensor de 33MP. Is its color science better than A7iv's? Even sharing the same 33MP sensor.
This is very helpful. I am thinking to upgrade my a7iii which I have been using for 5 years now. I am confused between a7cii and a7iv but I think I would lean towards a7cii since it's light weight
What about the new menus? I have Fujifilm gear right now and the menus are great but I’ve heard horror stories about Sony menus. What do you say? Thanks
i just got the 55 zeiss 1.8 also recetnly second hand for a expensive price and i have been LOVING it on this cam too, like almost more then the 24-70 gm2. (and oddly enough it might be clearer and sharperr?! (no way im actually saying that compared to a gmaster zoom lol) ???
For me there is no longer room for the A7IV I upgraded to the a7r 5 and A7Cii and the autofocus with the AI processor is so better much better than i ever imagined. These cameras feel idiot proof. Whether your shooting photo or video you will not ever hsve to worry about your subject being out of focus. If you dont need the extra custom button and sre okay with 1 cardslot then get this for sure!
sync speed of 1/160 is a bit slow compared to 1/250 on the a7iv and 1/4000 max shutter speed vs 1/8000 in bright sunlight with flash is just too slow in 2023. i really wish they would have been the same
Hard question tbh! This is an excellent hybrid, the Q2 is one of the best photo cameras I’ve ever used. If I could only choose one, id take the a7cii because I could still do excellent video.
Honestly, I have been considering the C series since the first. I am currently using an A7R III so its getting on a bit, over 6 years old. It still takes wonderful photo but i'm looking for something just a touch newer. The choice really has boiled down to the A7IV or A7CII because they are both 10 bit capable (unlike A7R IV) and I'm not one to have two cameras. I just don't think I can accept having one memory card slot. I've personally had an SD card fail (luckily nothing was on it) but a friend had hers fail and lose a LOT of pics after a holiday. I might be ok if the A7C II supported CFexpress which are far less likely to fail, but all the time its SD I want 2 slots.
@@magnusasmussen9452 worse sensor, 42mp in my A7R III was already pushing things in low light. 64mp just has tiny little pixels and I would never need that kind of resolution

How is the EVF? I went from the original A7c to the A7iv because of the horrible EVF. Not sure if the increased magnification stacks up. Is it worth going back?
I’m probably not the best person to ask this as I don’t use the EVF much, it’s fine for my needs. But definitely small.
@@JonnyRoams thanks 🙏
Very bad EVF on the CII
A7IV.
A7IV or V for professional use. These smaller AC is really for people who intend to travel with and still want a lighter body.
A7IV if ur going professional. The extra buttons, dual cards, full hdmi and larger evf and grip will go a long way. Not to mention better cooling due to bigger body will help a lot in longer shoots.
I like your 55 1.8 setup. Which step up ring size and filter did you use? I heard Polar Pro and Mist but didn’t catch the rest.
As a professional this is a no go, 1 card slot with added video overheating, hate the ergonomics too, for a travel camera it's great
what picture profile did you use on this video?

@@JonnyRoams thankyou
I think paring the a7iv with the cii is a great choice especially if it allows you to invest into more glass!
Very thankful for such beautiful explanation!!! Can you help me with choosing between Sony A7c2 and Sony Fx30? I want a hybrid camera, with less overheating issues and main purpose is creating travel reel videos and photographs. 4k 60 fps is must.
Does A7CII get overheat while filming? If yes after how many minutes? How long the battery life can handle?
Great content. If you were to buy a camera today, would you purchase an fx3, Canon R6 Mark 2, or Zv-e1 for vlog/doc content or any other suggestions
ZV-E1 and I’d pair it with the tamron 20-40 or 20mm G. Can’t go wrong with
@@JonnyRoams Thanks. Do you enjoy your Sony fx3
@@MODESTYXO205 oh yes I love it! Sometimes I do feel it’s overkill for even my needs - I had the fx30 for half a year which always does call me back
@@JonnyRoams Thanks for the speedy reply. I'm looking at the Sony fx3 for long-form content. Other than that, the zve1 is a solid camera. I'm still undecided 😆
did the crop mode on 4k 60 give you more bokeh letsay compare to the same lens using at 4k 30 ff mode? and also if the crop mode only apply to 4k 60?
Got an a7Cii as well and am eyeing that 70-180 as well. Do you have a video review?
I just can’t afford a camera for photos and a camera for videos, even though I’d love to. Therefore, I need to have the best hybrid camera possible (Sony). Do you think the A7CII is the best option right now? I’m more into videos but still need to have the stills option
May I ask why did you choose A7CII over A7CR?
I have a Canon 5d mrk4 ... I want to switch for low light video and stills.... but I still don't know which to get A7iv , Fx3 or Cii because I want to do both.... suggestions please
@@yngfireman a7iv or a7cii. Go try and get your hands on both to see which you prefer.
I’m confident this will be a lot better than your Fujifilm! The new AI autofocus isn’t perfect but it’s VERY close
@@JonnyRoams Well anything is better than Fuji for autofocus...which is a shame because the rest of the camera is great. Cheers keep it up.
Hows your jurney going with the a7cii? I would love to see another video reciew after some months of use!
It came to an end as much as I loved it I’ve move my photos entirely to the Leica Q3. Still a fantastic camera though!
If I may ask what made you move away from it?
im about to sell my xt5 just for a a7cii!
Hi, Do you have link for the silver baseplate? Thanks!
Yep there is one in the description!
hey, I have a question for you because I heard that the Sony a7c ii is "more plastic" than the first version a7c, something like the zv e1.
Does it overheat more than a7iv since its a smaller form factor
I really want the a7c ii because if the ai stuff but the a7iv has 2 sd card slots and "better viewfinder". I just don't know what to do. Wish the A7C II had 2 sd card slots... Is there a work around?
Hey, can someone that owns the A7Cii tell me what MB size ranges the 3 Lossless Compressed sizes are when it comes to brackets?
Could someone fire a quick test? Shoot 3 brackets 2 stops apart with the Lossless Compressed L, M, and S and tell me those numbers?
Aside from a smaller form factor, it’s a downgrade from a A7iv but since you have a FX3, it’s not really a loss.
Kind of. I put a huge value in the improved AI autofocus. If you can overlook the flaws in the viewfinder and ergonomics, I think it’s better than the a7iv. But to each their own
How do you access the aspect ratio bars? And do you know if this option is also on the A7cr too?
Thanks
Great vid mate. I can’t find how to get the 2.35:1 aspect ratio on my a7cr. Do you know where the setting is?
Can you send the link of the grip? It's beautiful
How is it for bokeh??? Would it be a good camera to shoot portraits in China?
i didnt even sell mine! i just returned it in the box, straight for the a7c2 lol
Does this camera replace your Q2? Or do you use it along side the Q2 for different purposes?
A ciencia de cor dela é melhor do que a da A7iv? Mesmo compartilhando o mesmo sensor de 33MP.
Is its color science better than A7iv's? Even sharing the same 33MP sensor.
This is very helpful. I am thinking to upgrade my a7iii which I have been using for 5 years now. I am confused between a7cii and a7iv but I think I would lean towards a7cii since it's light weight
2 cards slots and a larger EFV make the difference for more professional work
3:29 what backpack is that mate?
Wandrd PRVKE 31L!
All I keep hearing is that the EVF is poor, what is your honest opinion?
Definitely a weak point, but personally I don’t use it much with this camera as it’s more of a quick snap store so I just use the screen
What about the new menus? I have Fujifilm gear right now and the menus are great but I’ve heard horror stories about Sony menus. What do you say? Thanks
I really like the current Sony menus. The old gen cameras like the a7iii were dated but the new ones are great
Man we have the same setup, a7cii and 55 1.8. Thinking of upgrading to the new 50 1.4 gm. Should i do it?
i just got the 55 zeiss 1.8 also recetnly second hand for a expensive price and i have been LOVING it on this cam too, like almost more then the 24-70 gm2.
If you dont need the extra custom button and sre okay with 1 cardslot then get this for sure!
sync speed of 1/160 is a bit slow compared to 1/250 on the a7iv and 1/4000 max shutter speed vs 1/8000 in bright sunlight with flash is just too slow in 2023. i really wish they would have been the same
Yeah I wish I talked about the shutter speed in this video that’s definitely something I’ve noticed become more of an issue for me
@@JonnyRoamscan you make maybe a short video elaborating on this and how it affects you? Thanks
Can you share a link to the grip you mentioned in the video?
added to the description!
@@JonnyRoams thanks!!
How’s the battery life compared to the original A7c?
what watch are you wearing in the video?
Love Sony A7CII
The new riggg

Could you share the link to the plate ?
It’s in the description! 🤝🏼
Thank you, Does a7cii have better stabilization than a7iv?
Hi yes it is slightly better than the a7iv (7 stops vs 5 stops)
How’s the battery life compared to the A74? I got the new Zve1 and it guzzles through batteries!
Pretty comparable I’d say! Just got back from a weekend shooting and did it all on one battery with about 60gb of footage
What’s better, this or the Q2?
Hard question tbh! This is an excellent hybrid, the Q2 is one of the best photo cameras I’ve ever used. If I could only choose one, id take the a7cii because I could still do excellent video.
What camera did you use to this UA-cam video?
FX3
How does the 20-40 tamron compare to the 17-50mm?
20-40 is better in terms of quality, obviously shorter focal range but the 17-50 has a very strong vignette at 17mm
A7cii over the zv-e1?
Hmm those are two vastly different and would depend on your use case. Primarily video the zve1 for sure. But if you want a hybrid the a7cii wins
Hi. Why not the A7CR?
@@magnusasmussen9452 worse sensor, 42mp in my A7R III was already pushing things in low light. 64mp just has tiny little pixels and I would never need that kind of resolution
