- The Milan man of the century, Franco Baresi heroically captained the Rossinieri out of the Serie B and into the club's most decorated period. The loyal libero was at the heart of a back-line that is generally regarded as the greatest ever. A tough tackler with an unmatched ability to read the game, Kaiser Franz is undoubtedly a legend of football and THE icon of AC Milan.

My dad shared an elevator with Franco Baresi, Alessandro Costacurta and Paolo Maldini in a hotel in Milan sometime in the late 90s. He was so starstuck he didn't ask for a picture, but his colleague took one after they left the lift, so there's a family photo in my collection of my dad smiling liking an idiot with three famous Italian football legends walking off in the background.
Do you stil have that picture?
Doubt it
Brilliant,ur Dad brushed shoulder's with some true greats!👍

The Milan defence of Maldini, Baresi, Costacurta and Tassoti is the best defence I have ever seen to date.

It kills me to say this as an Englishman, but Baresi is the best defender I've ever seen. What a fantastic player.
England have had some great defenders over the years, Tony Adams, John Terry, Rio Ferdinand, Bobby Moore ect. I'm sure you could think of a lot more but yeah there is something about Italian defenders that's unique to them I think, Nesta and Maldini for example was my favourite two
Why it should kill you?
No, Harry Maguire is Cleary goat
@@votewaldo9876 I forgot about Maguire. I change my statement. Baresi is the second best defender I've ever seen.
I love the rivalry between England and Italy, it's fun and respectful, I understand totally when you say it's kills you to say, because England hate playing against Italy because Italy nearly always takes the piss.
The greatest defence ever.
Maldini, Baresi,Costacurta,Tassotti. All of them(except Tassotti who played his whole career except 2 years in Milan ) were a product of Milan's youth's academy and played for 20+ years for Milan. Forza Milan.
Calm, clever, physical, cunning, totally committed and a genuine legend ❤

Baresi "this is my box"
Legendary defender!
IMO the greatest central defender to play the game. Could mark Maradona and Romario at times to oblivion and his ability to read the game was top notch.

AC Milan will always be my favourite Italian Club. Their side of the late 80s/early 90s was glorious. Amazing Content 👏🏼
Gullit and van basten are as good a duo as any to ever play the game. That high press was just astounding at the time
Sacchi's milan changed football more than any team in history. without sacchi there'd been no guardiola, and that Ac milan team remains the best club side of all time
Guardiola learned from cruyff , so there’d still be pep without sacci. Also, the greatest club side is Barca of 2008-12. They conceded few goals, were dominant in possession and - unlike Milan - never struggled to score goals.
unlike most people commenting, i was around to watch this Milan side of ‘87-94. Sacci was a visionary and a legend. But let’s not exaggerate.
@@SKa-tt9nm ah, the same cruyff who was humiliated by sacchi's understudy, capello? ok, I rest my case, I will be here if you want to learn more about football
@@SKa-tt9nm AC Milan of 90's was team complet : defense, midfield and forward. Barcelona was only on attack. Wasn't big money involved in that time and it was very hard to get all the trophies in 1 year. The recovery of the injury wasn't that quick and you couldn't afford a big squad. I have to say, seria A was very competitive, with a lot of good quality teams. Never, Spain or England had a league like Italia 80's-90's.
Im a liverpool fan but i remember growing up seeing the legend baresi on tele he made defending look easy he was a amazing player big respect always to him 👍
The name BARESI is a mythical one to the new-age of football fans. As for me, I wished I could have witnessed his defending ability and being a Milan fan, it makes it all the more sweeter knowing that his IMMORTALITY in footballing folklore will NEVER BE RIVALLED.
It's already been rivalled plenty and will be again in the future don't be so silly.
@@JaymzZeppelin Name me one player in todays era that can be matched with BARESI?
@@creative_soul-recolo I could name you many but here's the problem; Anyone I name, you're just going to laugh off because you put Baresi on this pedestal. Baresi was a fantastic player in his time, one of the best ever. I just think you went way over board saying he could "never be rivalled". Like, wtf does that even mean? Trophies? Caps? Longevity? All have been bettered since.
@@JaymzZeppelin It's not even about that. We are talking about a player who reinvented the sweeper role and rewrote the position of a defender. I mean to be voted the player of the century at a club where there has been countless legends. Who's been with the club through thick and thin. I mean yes there are players who rival his status or even better both past and present but there's been none like him during a time where Italian football was the benchmark.
@@creative_soul-recolo Okay listen. You clearly worship Baresi and I'm not hating on that, like I said he was a great player. He didn't "reinvent or rewrite" anything though. You are very poetic/romantic with your description of him; but I'm presuming (again, not hating) your first language isn't English, because taken literally, you're not really making any sense.
I can't imagine how much work you put into these. Great stuff, keep it up!
really?? Sweeper and libero is not the same position.. Sweeper plays behind the central defence, while a libero plays in front of the central defence.. In todays football where a flat defence is most commonly seen, the goalkeeper plays the old sweeper role..
And not going to comment on all of the other inaccuracies or down right nonsens, but I will however say that Baresi and Maldini feared Maradona, not the other way around😂
Quoting the national team commentator Bruno Pizzul every time Franco recovered the ball: "Imperioso Baresi!" What a player. Smart, strong but humble and fierce. A champion and unforgettable capitano for AC Milan and Nazionale. Legend.
Baresi is an absolute legend, and like you addressed he was undersized for a centre back. Just goes to show his knowledge of the game. Another similar Italian is Fabio Cannavaro who was also only 5'9 and considered undersized for a centre back. But his performance at the 2006 WC was nothing short of legendary. I'm from Ireland so I didn't really mind who won that WC but it was hard to pick a side with Cannavaro and Zidane being two of my favourite players. I enjoyed seeing Italy win but it was a heartbreaking way for Zidane to end his career.
Cannavaro! Wow, what an Hero that summer, in an interview for a documentary of that world Cup Me. Lippi in a confident tone started :" i did not Say anythingnto the players prior to the finale game, that year Cannavaro would not allowed in the area not even his own Mother, and behind him Buffon was saving everything" ..a glorious and Golden era. Nowadays italian soccer Is more than dead
I always preferred Baresi, Maldini, Costacurta, Nesta, Thuram, Puyol, Vidić or Thiago Silva over Cannavaro. There was always something deeply chivalrous and honorable about them. They were not just a great players and warriors, but also a true captains and role models, on and off the pitch. Cannavaro was just another (in/glorious) bastard for me, like Chiellini, Bonucci, Ramos, Materazzi, Montero, Mexes, Jorge Costa, Pepe...
Cannavaro, as great as he was, could clean Baresi's boots, no offense.
@@robertomoccia8305serie A is dead long before calciopoli
When it comes to USA 94 I still cry with Franco but not because we lost, not because he misses the penalty, but because I'm proud of my captain (rossonero as well) shining class and humanity.

Yea Ireland beat yeas in first match
Tale a look at Paul mc grath , he was way better than any Italian defender. Fu

Possibly the best overall defender ever despite not being over six foot.
After Napoli smashed Milan 3 nil... Reporter asked Maradona about his performance... Maradona Said something like the game is over and I have got Baresis shirt which I will treasure forever.... That's the respect baresi had
Baresi is simply the Greatest !
No wonder Maldini went on to be so good, he had Baresi as his mentor.
I just love defenders, they give it their all, they're not selfish and they are leaders, attackers on the other hand are crybabies who get all the credit
Exactly bro , No defenders =No 🏆
@@josearias9825Defence, midfield and Attack are all important.
Franco Baresi is the greatest ever defender in the history of football, what an incredibly determined player that always gave everything he had to give, which almost every time was enough.
That back four line with Maldini on the left, Tassotti on the right and Costacurta and Baresi in the centre is by far the best defence the game has ever seen.
From an Englishman Italy have and will always produce the best defenders! They love the art of football and all aspects of the game which includes defending
Not so lately, unfortunately. Did you know that Serie A has the highest scoring rate per match among the top 5 leagues in 20/21 season, and the 2nd highest in 19/20 and 21/22? Except overrated Bonucci, they got no CB superstars anymore. Just look at those recent calls in national squad:
Bonucci (CB, 35)
Tolói (CB, 32 years old, Brazilian born)
Acerbi (CB, 35)
Romagnoli (CB, 28)
Scalvini (CB, 19)
Bastoni (CB, 23)
Mancini (CB, 26)
Luiz Felipe (CB, 26, Brazilian born)
Gatti (CB, 24)
Not so promising, bro.
Plus these "Italians":
Emerson (LB, 28, Brazilian born)
Jorginho (MF, 31, Brazilian born)
Grifo (RW, 30, German born, never played in Serie A)
Retegui (CF, 23, Argentine born, never played in Serie A)
João Pedro (AMF/CF, 31, Brazilian born)
Not so promising, bro.
No one can match Franco. He had it all. Vision, predicting things before it happend, he could drive with the ball forward at his feet, he rarely kicked the ball away when under pressure like 99.99% of todays defenders, every pass hade a tought behind it, he could pass it, dribble, tackle, trick his opponents, stress free. Im a Milan fan since childhood. Maldini is in the top. One of my favourites, but Baresi is watching them all from above, he was that good.
🤘🏻👹🤙🏻
As a Milan fan since 1980, i thank for the great video of a true legend, Franco Baresi. I remember fondly, at minute 6, the english player Ray Colin Wilkins, called "razor" for the throws that cut the field in two, arrived at Milan in the summer of 1984, for two years, who died prematurely in 2018. A player who soon became a favorite of us fans, a true gentleman even off the field.
The great Ray Wilkins of Chelsea and Milan. May his soul RIP
Grande video
Didn't know Razor passed away. Sad news. He was a true gentleman and a good player too. He came to AC Milan in an awful period for the club, when it almost went bankrupt.
I saw him, Baresi, F. Galli, Verza (if I'm not wrong) at a fan Club Dinner.
Ray Colin said Baresi was the best player he saw in his career
He was definitely one of the very best. Players like him should be awarded the player of the year not only strikers. Is a shame. I’m a German not an Italian but I have admired him all the time.
He was actually voted by the Italian press and supporters as the greatest Italian player of the 20th century. That's a hell of an achievement for a defender and shows just how great he was.
I'm sure the day will come and your content will get the recognition it deserves
I've been watching your vids for a week now, and can't get enough
Keep it coming man, you are great
Baresi was simply brilliant what a ac milan side that was
I have been saying this for years about franco Baresi and people say what am i talking about. In the 80s i used to watch Italian football and franco was so good on the ball no one could get the ball of him and he was so clever he new where to put the next pass. I am so privileged to have watched him as he was world class. 👍
Baresi was a Monster ❤
He was the guy strikers did not want to mark them. He was a Maestro, his vision of the game unmatched. He was part of one of the best defences that ever played the game and for a moment in time, one of the best teams that ever played the game. The guy just demanded Respect. Out and out Legend 🙌. 58 game win run 👏👏👏
In late 80's an right through 90's I loved watching Franco baresi he made defending look like fine art, an he schooled Maldini when he was a youngster, when baresi retired, Maldini took off were he left, both world class two best Centre backs in the world 💪🏽⚽👊🏽💯👌🏽
Best defender I ever watched.
Thank you from South Africa. King Franco Baresi.
Legends. C4 brought Italian football to UK television and Baresi was such a legend to watch.
Maradona said it and I'll say it too, the best defender ever. Respect to the Italian master from a Man City fan ❤⚽️🔥
Watching football italia in the 80s milans franco baresi made being a defender exciting to me ! What a player
Baresi and Maldini weren’t just brilliant players but their charisma was awesome.
Some of the photos and old footage you use in these vids are gems! Seeing Ray Wilkins on the same pitches as a young Paolo Maldini and Maradona is class. Baresi was a king and that Milan defence was impregnable. Check out Paul McGrath's life story buddy. A video on his career would go down well. Thanks for your work and attention to detail!
Lies again? Facial Botox
Ive been a Milan fan almost all my live, since 89 when i was 6 and Milan beat Steaua in the final.I grew with Franco and that team and they were my idols.Thank you for this video, really awesome job you've done
Baresi was one of the best defenders I have ever seen. His timing and reading of the game as superb
Honestly this deserves more views, felt like I was watching a Netflix documentary. Excellent work, not often I spend 5-10 mins watching one UA-cam video let alone 30.
Truth.w Baresi
Best Baresi Documentary EVER !!! Couldn't blink my eye the entire time even after watching so many of them.
In my humble opinion Franco Baresi was the best defender I have ever seen. He made defending an art form.
I remember when football Italia started on channel 4 in 92 as a kid. Serie A truly was the pinnacle then and pre internet it was one game usually featuring Gazza at lazio, and James Richardson highlights show with his gelato in some piazza. Would have loved to see him play more in the few years before.
Yes,it was a must for me..This was the top League in the World..I used to have so many debates with work colleagues constantly bumming up the PL..But they were wrong, that was just about SKy Tv and DOSH!.
The Italians had the Dosh,Glamour, players and the quality &,that's just an fact!
Ah, Gazzetta Football Italia. The best football show to ever grace the screens. Knowledge, insights, great interviews and highlights with a large dose of wit. What a fantastic programme and a great presenter. At the time, the best league in the world.
Baresi was a defending legend. AC Milan in the 80s, they virtually had the Italian International defense on their side. Baresi, Maldini, Costacurta. One of the best teams I have ever seen. Lets not forget other great defenders like Cabrini, Passarella, Kaiser and a defender who is not well know because his national team was weak at the time. I am talking of Elias Figueroa (Chile), he was awarded best player in Sth America 3 times, Brazil wanted him to play for their national team. He was also awarded best defender in 1974 WC where Beckenbauer also played, captained and won WC. He was outstanding. There are no such defenders anymore, they cannot read the game, cannot dribble under extreme pressure and have no timing in tackles. Ie Ramos, sent off 28 times and a liability.
Great work mate. Should look into the career of Michal Laudrup, one of the most skilled and underrated players in history. Keep it up
He isn’t underrated if you have a half decent understanding of football or at least if your older than the messi/ronaldo fanboy generation
Edit: just checked you’re channel after seeing that profile pic and it peeking my interest, wow your a hell of a artist with portraits
The late 80’s through till the early 00’s was footballs golden age.
This was the period of legends, who played with fire and passion for the game.
How much would Baresi/Maldini/Baggio/Weah/Gullit et al be worth in todays game?
This golden period of football and all the legends it gave birth to will never happen again.
Messi/Ronaldo are the last of them.
Thanks for the nostalgic trip down memory lane. Baresi was pure class.

That Milan team during that time was as close to perfect as we’ve ever seen
My Favourite Defender of all time and i probably saw him play less than 25 times as i'm british and so could only watch him at international tournaments and when he played against a UK team or a british club. The epitome of Brains, Bravery and a phenomenal mental capacity that combined Will to Win & Game Intelligence in equal measure. Literally the player i judge every central defender against. I wanted Gary Neville to play CB for Man Utd because he was a clever, sneaky, dirty defender before he was 21 and i thought those qualities were quite rare both in the United team and the british game in general. The True Captain Leader Legend.
