really hard to find players nowadays with his strong personality, physical playing style, strategic skills and he was always a sportsman on the field. a lot of today players fail to fullfill at least one of the attributes he stood for.
Not only that players like Baresi Maldini.... forced the opposition to get creative and way more versatile to get a shot at their goal ibrahimovic wouldnt play like ibrahimovic if he didnt get matched up against some of the hardest of defenders of all time back in the days. with the refs blowing their whistle for every petty contact the game has turned into a diving simulator.

Amazing player 1 Vs 1, great timing, great pace, extremely strong, good technique (he could have easily played as midfielder as well), his best skill was "intelligence": he really was a tactical genius, in the right spot every time, saying to his teammates what was the right thing to do. People who played against him know that milan's players were looking to him all the time, waiting for his instructions. Everytime, for more than 20 years.
There have been some truly unbelievable defenders over the past 24 years since Baresi’s retirement however no one has what he had or could do what he did, was so respected by mega star team mates and opposition players alike.
Maldini is spoken of highly and rightly so however as part of Baresi’s Milan there is obvious reasons why that Milan team conquered Europe so many teams and broke countless records

Totally. was just about to post something similar. Amazing to see a properly drilled and coached defence. As you say an art. Sacchi’s Milan were brilliant at it, probably best ever. Then MvB would punish you at the other end. I read an article recently that Milan team used to play Attack v Defence at training. You don’t need me to tell you who came out on top. Outstanding.
I also don’t think this video fully does justice to Baresi. His best skill was his reading of the game, positioning and organising the defence, bringing them out together like a military operation.

After the match against Norway ( during the group stage) he suffered a rupture of the medial meniscus of the right knee, an injury that normally will take 1-2months to recuperate properly. That is why the Italian medical team tried hard to bring him back from injury and make him ready for the WC94 final match vs Brazil. Too bad that his amazing performance during the 120min final match would get totally overshadowed by losing his penalty and WC title.
