Taryl , you are a God sent , i had two lawn tractors at a shop. they sat there for two years. I brought them home they would not start. I watched your videos and got my 1996 Murray 14 HP briggs & stratton started 3-4-2018 . i removed back wheels put tubes in tires, unstuck the brakes, rebuilt the starter, rewired 'replaced ignition switch and solenoid , replaced all fuel lines, rebuilt cab
Taryl is an awesome teacher! Can't help but to learn and have fun along the way.
This video is crazy. CRAZY GOOD!!!!! I rebuilt my carburetor and fuel pump on virtually the same Craftsman 18hp had to make a similar adjustment once completed. Now I'm in the Peach Orchard. Thanks Taryl and very much appreciated.
Everything you did in this video helped me get my mower working again. Thank you so much! I actually watch this video from time to time just cause it's very entertaining! Thanks again Taryl!!
Yeah.. He should probably just start and build a channel around videos like this.
@@calholli he did lmao
Thx for your time in making these helpful videos! They’re the best!
Those Briggs and Stratton opposed twins are great engines!
I appreciate the helpful video. I done rebuilt my carburtrator and my tractor dint run at all. I fingered it out after I watched this video and realized I didn’t wear my glasses the first time and the second time I rebuilt it I found that one of them daggum springs jumped outta place when I put it together. Happy to say she purrs real good now. Keep up the good work.
replaced choke cable ,used torch cleaners to open jets , added best grade of gas and connected to a 300 crank amp bat. I watched and followed your advice to the T. thanks so very much. i have never tried this before!!!
I like how taryl has a video for every thing i work on 😊
All I wanted to know was how to sort out an opposed twin carb and I stumbled on to this.....Taryl, these videos are the most informative and entertaining that I have ever seen, Thank you. Dave, From NH.
Thanks for all your videos. It is really helping me restore several riding mowers and push mowers because eod your teaching. Hats off to you and the gang
Thank you very much for this video. You are right about those fuel pump springs. Once you drop them, they are gone forever!
hey man, thanks for the Video, just got my briggs back running today(oonly to have the deck blade housing break and fall out from under the mower) but the step by step was amazing. thank you guys from maryland.
Now I know how to rebuild the carburetor and adjust the governor, thanks a lot!!
Just finished up going over my carburetor and she's running a lot better now thank you
Im glad that I found your video! I was almost intimidated into buying this carbutraitor instead of rebuilding it myself!
Those engines are awesome found a craftsman same engine on the curbside with free sign on it
Nice you got a free sign with the motor lmaoo
I tried everything to stop the surging, flooding and backfiring...nothing worked. Then I remembered Taryl said check the welch plug 12:35. Sure enough, the plug was missing. Problem solved. Thanks Taryl!
thanks for the great info
Thanks. This may help in the future on my Briggs .
Found the same gasket set 393397 for my separate fuel pump on a Generac 5000 10 HP Briggs even though the kit was listed for a 14-18 hp Briggs. Thanks for showing how to take it apart and reassemble. When I pulled apart the separate fuel pump it never had the tiny springs which tells me someone had this apart before because it would not run right. What's strange, it is gravity fed anyhow. I guess it works better with fuel pressure.
i like ur videos they help when fixing up engines that havent ran in many years
Taryl, thanks for this video, mine is running great now.
i like to use ebgine oil on the tiny parts and around the rubber gasket seals its kinda sticky and really helps hold the tiny parts together when rebuilding the pump. Also IMO it beads water and helps the gaskets swell into position once its all back together. The last time i rebuilt this carb was 10 years ago when we bought the last battery! This mower has been an amazing one we got it on 95! *knocks on wood*
GREAT video Taryl.
Epic. So helpful. Time to work on my Carbatrator!
Thanks fer wrenchin with us!
Good show!
So glad I found the Fuel Pump test at 9 minutes in. I was was thinking either I rebuilt my pump wrong last year or I was not getting enough fuel to it. A positive test let me move on to the rest of this video and my lawn tractor is now purring along with the choke full open, finally. I have had to fully choke it since I got it. Great, informative and entertaining videos. My first stop from now on whenever I am trying to figure anything out. Taryl is an awesome instructor!
Absolutely the first stop! This video would have saved me some serious time and headache if I had watched it first before rebuilding my carb. I didn't think to check the fuel pump operation when it was apart, and it would have led me to check my crank case line to the fuel pump earlier on (it was clogged with debris from sitting!) rather than not know why my engine wouldn't stay running!
Love this vid. Educational and funny. Lmao when Jr. pleas for his life because he "just got a new r.c. car and hasn't got to drive it yet"!
Your videos are very informative and helpful, tryed watching others and there just learning themselves and a waste of time
Thank You for sharing this information and knowledge of a life time of working on them…😊❤
That was a great video ! Helped me out a lot !
Thanks for the great video . I have some work to do now !!!
Just swapped out some old 1/4 fuel lines on an 90s MTD riding mower and realized I got 5/8, seems like it should be ok but before I put it all back together wanted to see if that’s a huge no/no. Am I destined for a fuel leak? Thx love these videos!!
Thanks Taryl
thank you
fun and informative
Good stuff guys thanks for posting. Help me with my 18 HP Briggs on older MTD lawn tractor.
Thanks for the video I have that dinosaur and the fuel pump wasn't working .now I have a leg up on how to fix it
really funny Taryl with great tips keep it up :]
Love the ending .. slippers crying 😅😅 getting hauled away. 😅
Very same Briggs in the shop last week. Customer said only run on half choke. Yep water and boogers in the Bowl. Love the walbro carbs. Good video Taryl. Scar looks awesome. Have to see my Hamburger hands LOL
I just recently this week learned about the Walbro Carbs in this video rebuilt one and found out there almost 300.00 new. So i rebuilt it..And had it out the next day..I just now got the video for this..So im ahead of ya! Love your videos ive learned alot from ya..!
I think this carbatrator video help me ! Really do !! Thanks !!
Thanks for the video!
I just did an engine swap on an 80s model rer Snapper and put a 2000 model Briggs 17hp Twin 2 on it. The engine idles pretty fast and I can't seem to get it to adjust down. Seems like the governor takes over and won't allow it to idle down. Does this sound like a governor adjustment issue or something else? I'm not very familiar with these engines yet, thanks....
I like your glasses Taryl Great video very informative
Fantastico Amigo!
Thank you thank you thank you! I have the Nikki six model....so tomorrow we go at it. Only runs on choke. Of course because I live in NH mice also invade my tractor every winter. That doesn’t help either!
great vids. I think my carb is in too bad of shape to rebuild. But I did enjoy the video.
Hello, love the video. I have a question. I have an Ariens H16 with a Briggs & Stratton carb the older one you mentioned with the low speed adjustment screw in the front and the adjustment screw between the front and the right. I rebuilt the carb put everything back together making sure the float valve was adjusted. I also made sure the throttle cable with the engine off, closes the plate at low speed and is open at high speed. When I run it and put it on high the throttle plate always stays shut. If I put it in gear or try and run the blades it just stalls out. Any help please.
I have a 1992 year model MTD with 18HP briggs model 422707 Type 1510 01 & the engine revs up and down. When throttle is put all way down it shuts off. I can cut with it because once pto is engaged it smooths out enough to cut grass. I'm going to tear into it soon being more confident after watching your video. What do you think might be the issue? Great videos btw, very informative & very well explained to where even someone like me can understand.
Taryl, your awesome!! I love the opposed twin, they are the most reliable engine from Briggs, in my opinion. Love to see your videos, educational and entertaining.
Exactly--- I don't understand why they stopped building them? It makes no sense... Why did Toyota stop making the 2JZ? Why did Cummins stop making the 12 valve Diesel? Why does Honda no longer make the CR500? Why? WHY?.... at least Chevy is smart enough that they are STILL making the LS engine in one form or another.
Oh!!!....I worked on one a few years back at a mower shop, and one of the spark plug leads was pinched, shorted to the tin, and it was running really bad. I said that the coil is bad, and it needs to be replaced. The shop owner said that the shorted wire wouldn't make a difference, as the opposed twin coil runs on wasted spark, so the one lead being shorted would mean their would be no spark....Look at the carburetor!! I was like whatever, so I went to the good used parts area, grabbed a coil, and put it on, and the engine ran perfect!! Didn't even have to dig into the carburetor. The shop owner was pleasantly surprised and was shocked!! I am like....yeah, it doesn't matter, the one lead is shorted!!
@@calholli emissions, flat head briggs can’t pass emissions. 2JZ, can’t pass emissions, the Chevy LS has gone through many revisions to pass ever increasing emissions standards.
@@TheBeeMan1994 lol.. It's the same o'l single cam V8 that it's always been. They just have better bolt on's now. And you can do the same with a 2JZ; yes it will take revisions and new bolt on parts-- but a lot of that stuff is already out there in the aftermarket.
@@davidplaster4576 He's right in that it fires on both strokes. But anyone with a brain would know that your spark is just cutting to ground before it reached the spark plug. lol.. It was still sparking, and still working--- it just wasn't reaching the plug. He was thinking that a shorted wire would end up shorting the circuit--- which is true in any other situation. But spark plug circuits are made to be shorted; that's literally what the plug is doing/ shorting the pulse to ground. Kinda funny that he got confused
Thanks for the video, I have one of these. I have just service the fuel pump because its been difficult to start.Once its running I can cut the grass ok. But if I turn it off it won't start again.... any ideas thanks.
Very cool engines
do you have one?
love your videos my man!!
Hey I love this one. Slippers the hero
I like the fuel pump test.
Great video sir Taryl.
Get er done,thanks
Great video Taryl!
+patthesoundguy Thanks Pat!
+Taryl Fixes All you quite welcome! You are keeping me very well entertained, I love it!
Taryl Fixes All I did everything you did and my machine is still acting up. As if it's still running choke only, any advice?
YOu're right! The jetted carbs work a LOT better! I got one that even had the jetted main in it and the engine idles like a kittie purring instead of surging all the time. I can set the idle a lot lower too so I can back a trailer without it running wide open. And the HIGH grade gas is the only way to go!
Boy what a blow to this twin when the vanguard v-twin came out. this rascal loved gas and hated keeping valve seats in. They sure were easy to work on as you said.
You are right about gas.I can mow 2 acres with a 15hp single kohler on not even a tank of gas. I used to mow with a 18,5 opposed twin.It took a tank and a half.I can see opposed twin say for pulling plows and heavy apps but a person only needs a 12 to 15hp single to mow their yards.
tammygosnell It takes alot more hp.to mow then to run a plow or tiller.Bolens"G"-series tractors(G-arden)Had models as small as 10hp.running shaft-drive tillers back in the mid 1970's.
Thanks Mr Dactyl!!🍺🍺
Is there any way you could do a video on the linkages on this motor? I'm having some major issues. Thanks!
Me too
Great info again . Like the look of the tach metre . Where could i pick one up from.
+stevewpmac Top man thanks
I just paid $50 for a mower that has the 18hp opposed twin on it. Only thing i had to do was rebuild the carbatraitor and only paid $9.95 for the rebuild kit. Then boiled it lemon juice it works good. Also do you have any videos showing how to replace the needle seat ?
They just sound good 👍
Another good tip for this carb..... If you've hadone too many beers... make SURE you dont get the vaccum line and fuel line swapped... I spend 3 hours rebuilding this thing over and over lol. DOH!!
Had one I those I got in I was going to rebuild, a lot of parts are no longer available for these twins. Too bad, I like these
I havent seen a brass float for ages.
I just took mine apart today , would only run if choke was almost full on . So tomorrow I will clean it out ,,, interesting , but when I took the gas pump apart it had not springs at all inside ???? Guess I'll see if I can find a kit , but the pump seemed to work fine , burned up a whole tank of gas pulling the leaf rake around ( runs fine if choke is nearly full on ) thank for the video .
Well it looks like tour last winter up north will be unforgettable , Some body has a sense of hummer .
Mine will only run on choke do i need to do what you did in this video?
great video mr taryl i guess we better get slippers some crumb cake money hahaha
Hi Taryl, I have the Nikki carburetor and it is missing the welch plug. Will that make the engine surge? Thanks for any info!
So I have a JD 116 with a 16hp opposed...I have the three screw carb with the low speed adjustment screw and the choke cable out front...my carb has an anti-backfire switch screwed into the plug on the high speed side...does that change the carb rebuild kit or could I get the one pictured here? Thanks for your help
Taryl your fantastic excellent man😊
@ 2:00 Harley does bust out, of his jumpsuit.
Brilliant video thank u 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
I have this motor in a troy bilt bronco. 2006 I've had garage kept for 10 years. It quit working over the winter. Just had the mower serviced completely. Plugs, filters, oil, carb rebuilt completely along with soaking it. It only runs for a few minutes then stalls. 10 minutes later it fires right up, then runs til hot again.. Is it possible to overheat or vapor lock??
This mower looks exactly like mine: 18HP Craftsman . Where is the engine model number located? I ordered the carb. gasket kit (520-526) on eBay, but it's the wrong one. It has the 4 hole and mine has 3 hole pump.
Yo Taryl where can I get an idle screw as I lost mine in the grass while clean the carb. I thought I was slick like you and dropped it in the grass while working carb on.
Anyone got info on a rebuild kit for an engine like this? Got a old craftsman GTV 16 with blow by...
great video thanks. I noted that you substitute another carb for the Nikki. I have 2003 or so 16.5 hp single cylinder Briggs Intek with the Nikki carb. Don't like it. The parts list shows an alternate Walbro carb. Think I can substitute without a problem?
Oh yeah I do it when I have a carb. problem with the Nikki. I'll find a good used one in my junk yard & change it to the walbro. Only for the fact that the Nikki carb. parts are $$$$$!!!
thanks Taryl
Great intro to your carbetraitor rebuild video. Where did you get the production music for the beginning? Good stuff.
We make all our own music.
Awesome vid...you do need to see a dentist ;) I have a 20.5 Briggs .. Opposed twin with that dern nikki on it.... You mentioned using another carb. Can you recommend one to me that would replace the nikki. I just put a new deck on it so I'm hoping for a few more seasons....
Hey Taryl,
Love all your videos! I have the opposed twin 18hp, but has the adjustable needle valve. I rebuilt the carb, but it wont run without the choke out and won't stop surging (looks like the governor goes up and down) throttle doesn't seem to work right either. Can you tell me step by step what to adjust in order. I Took it to the shop and they said I need a new carb ($200.00), that is why I pulled it from the shop....they said it won't idle....I'm stumped....I'm now a small engine mechanic, but I can follow instructions.
Thanks for help in advance if possible
Taryl love the show but i wish you would rebuild the Nikki 6 that what i got on my and can you tell me how you put fuil pump back on with out taking the carb off
What is the correct Model number or order number for the Walboro Carb? Thanks
what is the part number to replace carb to 3 screw pump
Lol he busted out alright. 😂 Right out of that jumpsuit.
what do you think of these new belts add a link they are very expensive but are supposed to last three times as long as a normal one opinion please
Taryl, what's the part number for the walbro type carb with the slow adjuster.. Cant seem to find replacement carb for my old briggs engine model 422437-1209-01 .. the engine is missing fuel pump and I dont believe it's the 4 screw pump due to not having 4 threads to mount on the corners! Thanks
how do you change the brass seat. thanks you are cool
i have a powr kraft 18.5 hp twin.it cranks but it does not turn on.any ideas?thank you btw.i didnt even notice some jets you pointed out.and i think im missing a lil spring inside the diaphragm.how important is that diaphragm spring?
How important? It won't pump gas without it.
Mine runs seeming very hot, like the hood of the lawn mover i can only touch for a second, and does not like to start when hot, any idea what could be causing this?
killerfizz2x sound like you got a mouse nest on one of the cylinders or maybe a partially clogged carb that runs lean or a small vacuum leak.
I came here to request that you do a video on how to repair the compression release on these engines
I have a 18 HP everything on the carb is the same except it has a fuel nipple on the side of carb and the two on fuel pump how would you hook the fuel lines up
Any idea why my 19hp twin is spitting fuel out of the carb? Runs fine but can’t figure it out
I have a 20hp opossed twin II briggs vertical shaft that doesn't want to crack. It tries but stops on compression stroke. Does this engine have a compression release? Or any suggestions? Thank you
