1N4001 diodes. You can get them online for 20 cents each. Stupid engineer setup.....thanks for going thru it, Taryl!
By far the most informative channel for small engine repair and general maintenance! Keep it up fellers!
Thanks Daryl, been working on mowers for many years and didn’t know this. Your the man. You’ve saved me hundreds of dollars in repairs to my mowers, thanks again.
Out of the blue, my Brigs dropped a cylinder. Must be a shot coil right? Resistance was a bit low so I replaced the coil. No fix and now the "good" cylinder is acting up. Thanks Taryl for pointing me at the diode pack. Never thought of it. But knowing that I always enjoy your videos, I went looking and there you were with a very clear diagnosis. I did not find a reference to the diodes on any of the other small engine channels I checked. Thanks much!
Hi Taryl. Greetings from England. You're a good teacher ! I especially liked the Diode= Checkvalve analogy describing an electronic component in Mechanics terms. Very Good. And thoroughly covering the repair description makes it clear. Well Done..
Taryl, you’re a genius. Thanks for sharing all your knowledge with us. We always learn something new every video you guys produce. Thank you for your service...👍👍👍
Great video taryl!!!!! This one was very informative!! I like how you took time to make the home made wiring to show what happens with no diodes
Thanks for this video. A little story here. I have worked on engines all my life well about 55 years or more. Today was the first time I have trouble with a diode someone gave me a zero turn with a 16hp B & S twin he could not fix. Long story short he replaced the kill wire with one without diodes and this helped me fix this old mower. Thanks
First time I read about those diodes! I probably lost two weekends on this!!!!!
Now it’s got a rebuilt carb, new spark plugs, re-adjusted valve push rods, new battery, etc.... but... engine would not start even though I could see spark (I don’t have the right tool, so checking for spark with the plug out of the head).
Glad you made this video! Very glad I found it too! :)
Great Video Guys. I could have use that one a few years ago when I run into my first burnt Diode. Drove me crazy. I knew the Diodes were there just didn't understand how they functioned in the circuit, but knew what diodes did so with some study and some meter work finally figured it out. That's when I knew I needed two spark testers for the Briggs Balance test. Rock On
Had this today....on a John Deere.... I didn't know there were those two diodes in the Kill system....but I noticed someone had removed "something" in the wiring....
Now...alles klaar! Thanks Taryl...you nailed it for me.
Taryl thanks! You helped me run to at least get the grass cut. Then, I watched the video a few more times to fix the diode issue on the weekend. TIP: If you can't find or don't have a terminal end tool you can just use a small screwdriver to bend two tabs all the way into the round part of the plug and pull the wire out.
I know this video is 3 years old but it just helped me fix my Ferris mower with 28hp vanguard. It was a bad diode! Saved me so much time. I had been at it for 2.5 hours before I turned to UA-cam.
Thank you for this very well thought out and hands on demonstration video. I learned a lot from it. Never knew that these engines used diodes in the ignition system!
Chased down wiring for a half hour on my mower so pumped I found this you came in clutch.
I subbed because of this video. I've got a mower with a Briggs 20hp v-twin & to cut a long story short my issue was the diodes in the kill wire. Ordered some diodes online, made up a new kill wire & now mower is running like a dream. Thanks very much for making this video. Kind Regards from Ireland👍🏼
Great video and good explanation of how a diode works. i really enjoy watching your videos on how to fix problems with small engines, keep up the great work.
Thank you very much for your assistance in my briggs & Stratton V twin engine that has two Diles in it one day old was bad I traced it down myself but I also had a friend of mine check the diode‘s with a tester. Now the engine is doing it again it’s it’s shutting off while running and I think it’s somethings getting hot causing it to shut down. So after five or 10 minutes of waiting for it to cool off I can fire it back up again. Thank you and I’ll be keeping you on here. Thank you and God bless you and everyone in your family and everyone that works for you.
Taryl thank you for taking your time to show us numsculls how to get all our junk lawnmowers running. I appreciate you it's all good. Be safe.
After improperly wiring my new solenoid I fried some ground wires (2004 Cub Cadet ZRT 50 w Briggs and Stratton 22HP Intek). I pulled my main wiring harness and repaired/replaced damaged wires but mower would only crank without starting. After a week of checking switches, fuses, coils, spark plugs, etc. and killing battery trying I finally caught this video. Taryl nailed it.
THANK YOU TARYL!!!! I can mow until I get the kill wires fixed. You're a gentleman and a scholar, I owe you a 6 pack of Hamm's.
P.S.-NICE RIP!
Sometimes after watching you perform your genius work, my head hurts. You are the best.
I’m a mechanical engineer & cant stop watching this series, it’s actually brilliant
I've got a 16 hp Vanguard. I'll definitely keep this in mind. Thank you Taryl.
I subscribe to a lot of different channels but this channel has the best videos as far as I'm concerned y'all put allot of thought and work into the subject matter. As always thanks for all your work and effort
Que tipo de diodos son los que lleva el motor briggs stratton 20hp, en los cables que van hacia las bobinas
*** SPARK TESTER NOTE - See Video: 13:11
I bought these exact spark testers (2), and while they work great, they are poorly made since
the black heat shrink does not hold the glass tube tight, and that flashing element will
soon break free.
I secured mine with super glue.
At 13:11, I see you secured yours with silicon, and that's a great fix also, probably better.
I noticed over the past 10 years or so, everything I buy needs some little clever fix to keep
it from breaking. International markets (Chinese/foreign) make things cheap for
competitive reasons, which means they are poorly made, but the alert buyer will benefit
from cheaper price by examining the product, and making it better!
Thanks For Thinking!

your channel has helped me so much, maintaining my own yard tractors, and keeping them running good, thank you.
camera man is a sniper, knows where to point make it easy for me to understand, great job group.
Oh yeah Tayrl and KREW,HAPPY MOTHERS DAY!!.
Taryl,You are alright in my book!! Thanks for the pointers. I binge watch your videos!!
Thanks Taryl. I think that I have a bad diode on my B&S twin. Being an Ham Radio Operator I know how a diodes work. I accidently knocked one of the spark plug wires off it and it would not run at all but would run when it was replaced. Keep up the great videos.
A lot more informative than many other serious videos i have see..............hey rocker you ROCK!!
That's great information! Weird problem, but makes sense.
Great info ,keep rocking it out guys
Hey that there's the Brothers Gross at the end! They're rockers! Loved the video. Always wondered if the engine would still run with the kill wire removed, so I would know if the coil was bad, or something was cutting off spark (like one of those pesky safety switches). Thanks for the valuable troubleshooting tip!
Bardzo dobra robota! Lapka w górę panie majster
Good job! I'm gonna need to watch it a couple more times to fully grasp it.
Taryl you are the best. Whenever i need to fix my mowers i look up your channel. Thanks Rocker!!!
Thanks Taryl, I like how you take the time to really explain and make learning fun.
Just to clarify, a diode can fail either shorted, where it will read both directions, or it will fail open, meaning you would get no reading in either direction. No offense, taryl, just wanted to add this. Great video, brother.
Taryl you are the best! This is exactly what I am dealing with. Thank you man!!!!
New subscriber here. I think you have solved my problem with my Briggs & Stratton Twin cylinder. Thanks. I guess many people know how to fix things, but there are few who can explain it to others. Good job on the explaining.
Another great video always very helpful thanks for sharing
Top tip about the diodes and how to test them, Cheers Taryl.
Pete, Lincolnshire UK.
Another great video. I wish you would do like a behind-the-scenes video on the camera equipment you use, the costumes, the real people behind the costumes, and how do you come up with the storylines every week. I think all your fans would really enjoy learning more about how y'all do it. Have a great day Taryl Fixes All.
Reeses Mill Off-Road Adventure Tayrl has already done that video. If you look back through his archives, you'll see it.
Gene Friedman Are you serious??.HAHA!!.No,not really even though I've seen a few people roaming the streets with somewhat similar"dental issues".HAHA!!.
Well done as always. Good info as well.
You are one class act. I can be so down try to fix my mower and you have a way of sending me in the right direction and make me laugh at the same time. Keep it up you crazy brother. 😂
Just found u thanks so far I’ve been checking and you are the first to mention this problem they have thanks 🙏
Thanks Taryl ...for my sunday night infotainment!!
Good video on the diode. I have a older Snapper riding mower with a Briggs 14.5 hp that wouldn't charge the battery or turn on the lights. I traced it down to a diode in the wire that comes out of the alternator. Ordered a diode, it should fix my problem.
Glad I saw this. I have a dead cylinder in my riding mower. Mice at through my kill switch wire and I resoldered it. But still not starting. Ordered the new wire and hoping that does the trick. If so, the new coil I orderec along with it will go back once I receive it.
Love the videos, very informative.
Very good lesson daryl
I learned something new and you made it fun too. Like your videos.
Great tech tips Daryl .
Thanks for the info and the entertainment!
Great info ! Thank you!
Your videos are just awesome and funny... thanks for the great tip...I think this fixed the problem.
Nice job on explaining this one!!
Thanks for the great informational videos!!!
Great vid Taryl. Thanks
Thank you so much Taryl !!
Taryl Fixes All is above and beyond any other mechanics videos not just because his knowledge is endless but also because he makes it fun.
Just one question do the twin cylinders engines like this one have the compression release or are they only on the single cylinder models?
Thank you Taryl!
Great video Taryl! I've been working on small engines since I was a teenager and I did not know this. I had an old Briggs opposed twin that was running on one cylinder and I bet this was the problem all along!
The opposed twin uses a single coil with two wires going to the plugs. It uses “wasted spark”, which means it fires both cylinders at the same time, one at TDC on the compression stroke, while the other cylinder is on the exhaust stroke.
Good job and good to know. Thank You
YES! I spent some time today figuring out what you just explained on my 1996 20hp Briggs IC V-twin I'm resurrecting.
Thanks for reminding me that the gad-frappin' solenoid'll starve it for fuel even if the kill wires are removed. I had forgotten that.
I learned (and your video confirmed) that the bands on the diodes must be on the *coil* side of the kill wire harness, unlike another UA-camr who had them the other way around in his schematic diagram, but came up with a good electrical solution in lieu of new diodes involving a DPDT switch with the coils on one end (electrically separate coil kill circuits controlled mechanically by a single switch) and the other ends of the switch wired together to the single harness kill wire in case your anti-after fire solenoid is buggered open, modded, or deleted.
That way all your safety switches still work.
A quick lookup says they're 1N4007 1000V 1watt diodes for anyone wanting to make their own harness.
You explained their function better than you had to and the 'improper' wiring examples and their associated symptoms really drove the point home.
Nice work, man!
Happy Mothers Day from Athens GA
again, somethings a lot of folks dont know thanks Taryl
Good info. Taryl, thanks
~ Jeff
You are the BEST outthere bro. Regards from Denmark
Awesome videos. Dont even have issues just like watching them. Currently my briggs peice0crap wont start checked kill wire, checked fuel pump, checked compression. All good. Installed new coils. Dam thing only fires up with starter fuild. Yard looking like a jungle
Slippers done another great job!!!!
Sir, you just earned a new subscriber. Thank you!!
Man you are awesome!!! My exact problem and explained very well. THANKS ALOT!
Great info!
Thanks, I like the idea to. Just unhook the grounds. And gave me the thought to check if both sides are firing.
Dude, you are amazing! You made me laugh and taught me a ton at the same time great job!
Beautiful, Thank you very much always helpful.
great info! thanks!
Great video! Very informative! It was exactly the problem that was occurring with my lawn mower. Thank you very much!
I just bought a used snapper and it’s running intermittently on one cylinder. I just bought two new coils 😫. Hopefully it’s my problem. But if it isn’t I now know to check them stupid diodes. The previous owner had problems with the same thing costing two different shop bills at a cool 2800$. The one coil would shut it off if unplugged. The cap was so rusty I can’t believe the shop missed it and didn’t replace it. I replaced the cap and still running on one cylinder. Glad you explained the problems. I have a plan B now
Right on...ROCKER!!.🎶🎵🎼
Rock on!
Great vid daryl
You are the best Taryl
Thanks man that's pretty slick
Thank you Terrell good video
Thanks, you are a great Teacher 👨🏫 did you see the mower pic on your google plus? The green one at salvage yard like the international harvester?
A good general diode is the 1N400x (1N4001, 1N4004) range - these are cheaper than dirt and can be found anywhere.
The king of lawn mower repairs wondering if you have a racing lawn mower or a very special mower u been holding on to but you should show us how to build a racing lawn mower i like all your viedos keep it up bud
Great info
Awesome video
Thanks for the great video. I live in Brazil and I have a lawnmower with this engine. Here it is difficult to find a mechanic to repair. My engine has a problem that seems to be governor. When I start the engine, it is constantly accelerating and decelerating, this happens at idle, or full throttle. Could you tell me what might be the problem?
Great videos Taryl!!!!😎😎😎
Good explanation
Great video.
Tarry's funny, even when he is trying to explain things! Good info as well.
Thanks for lessons 😅. Vary helpful
