Is The 2023 Kawasaki Vulcan Vaquero Just a CHEAP Harley?

- Kawasaki Vulcan Vaquero is a great long-haul cruiser for those of you who prefer function over form and could not care less about riding around on a shiny over-priced and over-engineered Harley.
If you ask me, once you put down a couple thousand miles on your cruiser and the novelty wears off and you realize you shouldn’t have financed $40,000 dollars on your maxed out credit card, then you wish you had saved all that money and gone with an equally fun to ride cruiser from Kawasaki.

It's not a "cheap Harley", it's a good Kawasaki...
It’s really just a play on the word. I mean it as in a bike that “costs” less than a Harley. But that’s essentially what we explore in the video. Is it really cheaper or CHEAPER.
@@emadreviews
😅✌️ I understood your meaning brother. The Kawasaki is a much cheaper bike, for sure. And a very reliable bike too.
Safe travels brother ✌️😎
It’s a Kawasaki bagger. The Vaquero msrp is $19,099 and a Road Glide is $21,999. Only a difference of $2,900 which could just be put towards personalizing the Kawasaki. Just choose your disease. 😂
@@MrWhiteTank Sticker on these bikes are 17k not 19k
@@maximus11400 oh, their website shows an MSRP of 19 K. But I seen them on cycle trader brand new for like $15,500.
I suspect this 'cheap' Harley is far more reliable with superior engineering than the 'premium' brand.
bull crap. I test drove one of these. Sounded like it was about to fly apart.
I suspect incorrectly!
Notoriously noisy valve lifters but it goes away over time. Stock tires are terrible and the rear was gone after 6k miles. My Harley buddies are always having weird problems and I never took a trip on my Guzzi where I came home unscathed. Wait and see.

That would be explained by the hearing damage caused from riding Harleys. 😃

I bought a 21' almost 2yrs ago new. It'll chirp the rear tire speed shifting on the highway and lift the front end. Not bad for a bike I paid 18k for, which was thousands less than a comparable HD or Indian. I did put a slightly taller windshield on it, about 4-5" to reduce buffeting.
the analog gauges are a throwback to classic american muscle car aesthetics
Definitely felt like that when riding!
I have the same bike, know it’s a little clunkier than the modern HD and Indian but much cheaper and I like the styling better. Done some simple mods: 11inch windscreen, Ivan tune, Freedom Performance exhaust, Eagle Lights LED headlight swap, I listen to tunes through my Garmin Bluetoothed from my phone. Side opening cases are fine since I use fitted liners when I travel anyway.
Did the ivans tune satisfy you?
😂😂 I would have loved to hear the "Good, Bad, Ugly " music, when he turned on the radio. 😅😂😂🤣🤣
It's 10 times the bike a harley is,the facts speak for themselves! 😊😊😊😊
It’s definitely a better money proposition on paper. However in reality I support everyone to choose the brand that gives them more happiness!
The problem with this category is the aftermarket is made for Harley.
At this Kawasaki, nothing needs to be changed. Just follow the service at the authorized Kawasaki dealer and have fun. Most people who work on their motorcycles screw them up. If you still want to look for motorcycle oil, accessories, and equipment, then I recommend the German pages of ‘Louis-Motorrad Shop’ and ‘Polo-Motorrad’. In Germany, this Kawasaki was sold until 2014 as ‘KAWASAKI VN 1700 VOYAGER CUSTOM’. Maybe this information will help you.”
Man. I gotta hand it to you.
Your review was incredibly detailed and thorough. Well done.
You really cover all the details!!
Nothing left out. Keep it up.
I didn't consider "any other" bike when I bought my Voyager. I love the 1700cc (103.7 cubic inch, might as well call it a 104) engine and it sounds more like a race tuned Vtwin rather than an engine that is loud and clunky. Yes, I did the Ivan tune and substantially increased the HP and Torque to keep up with the bikes out there with larger engines. I love the fact that with the Kawasaki, you get reliability and longevity. "Follow your heart, not the crowd"
Yes yes! I have a 2013 Voyager. Wouldn't trade it for anything.
NOT a cheap Harley in fact it's much better then a Harley in so many ways. Just to name a few better ride, water cooled, more reliable and a lot more Bike for the money!
I have a 2011 vaquero. I absolutely love it. Shits on a Harley road glide
Freedom performance dual exhaust on that bike
Gauges come from old school muscle cars
Literally this bike was designed to appeal to people who like a old school classy but modern bike
Wouldn’t trade mine for anything
Lol, shits on a RoadnGlide, Stop playin! There is not a Kawasaki touring bike that is on par with Harley. I like the Vaquero, it's beautiful, but I'll take myRoad Glide special over any kawasaki. The only real competition is an Indian or Goldwing or even Victory.
I ride strictly Honda or Suzuki. I purposely avoid Harley Davidson because of the image and their extreme attitude riders. The run of the mill Harley guys are easy to get along with But that hard-core nothing but a Harley guy is nothing but obnoxious. I will add I dislike the extreme sport bike rider as well and avoid contact with them also. It would be nice if progressive insurance would have motorcycle shows again and we can go try some of these bikes out. I’d like to ride a couple of the new Harley Davidsons. I feel like I need to say that I do not ride cruisers of any make. I have reached 64 years of age and maybe a cruiser would be a lot more comfortable for me.
I've been riding for nearly 30 years now. Not a bike snob, I can usually find the merits for any bike. I owned and rode 60k miles on a Vaquero and never had a mechanical or electrical problem with the bike. I personally do think they need an update, It's been the same bike since 2011 without any type of noteworthy update except the linked braking. They need more manufacturer options as well. The sound system, in fact the entire dash, is severely outdated. The only real problem I had with the bike was it's lack of character and horrible lean angle. Ivan's flash woke it up, but even an aftermarket exhaust couldn't fix it's lack of character. It's a super solid bike for people who want to put carefree miles on. As an aside, the true HP and TQ numbers are 75 hp and 99 tq on the dyno. There's not a whole lot you can do to increase those numbers. You can get it up to 90 hp and 115 tq with exhaust, an intake mod and a flash, but there is no cam chest kit or big bore kits available on the consumer market if anywhere.
I'm getting a little long in the tooth for a 950lb wet weight bike so decided to step down in size to a HD Street Bob 107. I have 2 of those now. One is a tastefully modified daily pushing 130 hp and 145 tq. My other one is a weekend machine pushing 175 hp and 190 tq with a turbo. I can honestly say that my daily is bulletproof. I've added some Villain2Hero bags and a Road Warrior fairing on top of my performance mods and have never had an issue with multiple 3000+ mile trips. The other positive is that it has a ton of character. It sounds absolutely amazing under load and has a nice deep rumble at idle. It's torquey, but manageable even when it's raining and I'm navigating wet roads in more urban areas. I've done all the work myself from engine, cams, primary, bars, wiring and even paint.
Also, you're saving well more than 4k at todays market. You can readily find an unused, but new Vaquero for well less than MSRP. You aren't finding a Road Glide sold under or even at MSRP. Usually 3-4k over + shipping etc.
I bought my Road Glide Limited for less than msrp. Depends on your dealer.
@@mkenny1128 every dealership within 100+ miles of DFW want thousands a over MSRP. They're also selling used 2020 models with 15k on the clock for new prices. Some are slowly getting back down, but they aren't there yet

Love the look on the Vaquero.
Overdrive is a gear ratio in the transmission not something they mapped into the ECU.
At times I thought I was listening to Borat explain the motorcycle to me. Loving my '23 Voyager! Thanks for the video.
Hey Borat is my favorite! Hope you enjoyed the video
I have a 21 and at first I hated the KACT but after a couple “oh shit” moments it’s really grown on me. Great bike and you get a lot for your money
I never felt it in action. But then again, I only rode it for 20 ish miles.
After riding/racing dirt bikes for decades, I switched to street bikes-Yamaha Super Tenere and a Kawasaki Voyager. I’m not sure how to safely ride a street bike without ABS.
Kawasaki puts out a quality product. And yes my Voyager was Ivanized. A very enjoyable long distance cruiser.
You NAILED the Demuro style my man 👍👍👍 excellent review, thank you! Keep the videos coming.

I have a 2020 Kawasaki Vulcan Vaquero 1700 ABS and it looks better than the Harley Davidson Road Glide/ Street Glide. Everything's updated. Everyone think it's a Harley but it's a Kawasaki Vulcan Vaquero.
I grew up riding Suzukis and Hondas. I own a Harley now but only because it’s a Harley. My Suzukis and Hondas were much more reliable and cheaper to maintain. Plus Harley dealers are the worst. I finally have a Harley but won’t buy another.
I have a 2019 and love no problems at all.
Kawasaki bikes stand on their own merit...sick of the constant comparisons with HD actually..
Jus' sayin'!
Comparison is the secret ingredient to improvement!
Great review!

I'd like to see a radio delete kit than a 20 year old radio on a 2023/4 bike. Just ditch it, were probably not gonna use it anyways.😂
God I love this bike! Good job Kawasaki!
Informative video. 2009 Kawasaki Vulcan 900 here. The Vulcan is a sweet intermediate cruiser (sadly lacking a 6th gear) and whose sweet range is 50-65mph. Would consider moving up to the Vaquero for longer highway trips (and less high speed buzz!) but the 250lb weight difference is a deal breaker for me at 74yo. Even the 900 (at 625lbs) is a chore to drive in heavy city traffic, while the Vaq, at some 900+lbs must be a slow torture.
A gentle Suggestion: I do find your constant emphatic hand waving to be distracting and mildly irritating. Reminds me of Doug Demure who I can no longer stand listening to for more than 30 seconds.
I wish the saddle bags were opened from the top rather than the side where stuff falls out when opened as well as I wish they had a infotainment system rather than analog.
As I review more bagger/cruisers like this I’ll get more experienced at what I should look for in a bike in this category. Top load appears to be superior to side load as you mentioned. Had I known that at the time of review I would have deducted a half point:(
I’ve been looking to upgrade from my shadow 750. After some comparisons this Kawi is in the running as my upgrade. The equivalent in HD or Indian is out of my reach. I’m not a 1%er or a brand guy.
Absolutely a knockoff of Harley, but they did it right for the most part. The engine and transmission is bullet proof, the rear suspension is much better. And it’s cheaper than the over priced Harley. Ps I’ll put my voyager/vaquero to any road glide be it slow race, police course or a quarter mile.
Thanks for watching!

Would be awesome to see how this stacks up against the Indian Challenger and the Honda Goldwing
you add a reliable GPS, and not pay for the unreliable frustrating electronics of the upscale bikes, its a great value
Can’t beat the price with a stick for sure!
Kawasaki should at least offer an updated infotainment unit
It has its own fanbase. But I’d definitely get another bike if I’m not too into this whole “retro” design philosophy.
not being broke down is a major plus, you can always get a GPS
This bike just needs to update the radio. USB and get rid of the Aus Jack.
They need an optional tour pack and this bike would be even better than it already is.
The same bike with the tour pack, is the Kawasaki Voyager.

is 3rd gear fixed yet? what is mpg? how large is fuel tank?
Per Kawasaki, the tank volume is 5.3 Gallons (relatively small). MPG entirely depends on how you ride but expect about 30-35. Your question about the gear is better answered by someone who owns this bike long term. I only spent a day with it and no issues with its 3rd gear. Thanks for watching!!

Is this a good first bike? I was thinking of buying the Vulcan 900 classic LT for my first bike
I own a 23 Voyager and a 23 Vulcan 900 Custom. My first bike was a KLR. I wouldnt suggest a 900 lb bike as a first only because it steepens the learning curve. The smaller, more manageable and more forgiving 900 will not highlight your mistakes as much
I agree with Rich. This bike is a bit too heavy. If you want a starter cruiser try to see if you like the new Kawi Eliminator.
I had a Kawasaki Versys 650 then went to the Versys 1000. Love the Versys 1000 because it sits me upright. I am 6ft 4 in. Both of them fit me well. Great bikes!!
He is just going on and on and on now on. Killing me with his incessantly endless droning.
My bad
They are some nice bikes, but Kawasaki needs to get on the ball and update a few things such as the stereo, LED lighting, and I think the saddlebags should be top opening. LED lighting is a safety upgrade that should be standard on EVERY bike from every manufacturer. They could still do these things and the bike would still be affordable. Lighting and the Stereo being that antiquated is inexcusable if you ask me.
A new stereo and LED will put the bike over 20k and they will lose massive sales.
@@maximus11400 Nah I disagree. An HD or Indian in that class is near 30 or more, so there's still room.
@@maximus11400 Replacing the lighting with LEDs is maybe a $100-200 difference in cost. A decent head unit and speakers may increase it by $500. It's not pushing it over 20k. In fact, if they went to an all digital display with gauges and head unit, they wouldn't go over 20k. The top loading bags are already on the Voyager and mount the exact same way, it's no cost to them. They don't sell a massive amount of these. I can easily find new unused 2021 models for 15k. An unused HD RG is selling for 25k easy most places, even last years model.
2 companies make a LED headlamp conversion and led turn signal bulbs with built in resisters are all over Amazon.

I have 10,000 miles on my 23 Voyager. It was my first 900lb+ bike. I have been primarily loyal to the big 4 as i have multiple bikes in my garage. I have not had many complaints about my big Voyager in a year of ownership...until i bought my first Harley. A 24 Heritage 114. I take no great pride in saying this but the Voyager does not compare in any way, any category or any fashion whatsoever to my Harley. My mind is blown. And thats an honest fact. Its important to realize this bikes strength is entirely in the fact its a bargain full dresser. If you keep that train of thought its a very nice bike. But a Harley it most definitely is not
True, but a Harley is in no way as good as an Indian. I have both 19' SDH and HD heritage, the Indian brings happiness and the Harley brings headaches

Agreed. I put 60k on a Vaquero. I'll likely never own another one even if it was a very capable bike. It just has no character at all.
I love the review except the horsepower torque rating…. Even an H2R would only score a 9 on your scale…?!? The Triumph Rocket & Ducati Panagale V4 would only score a 7!!!
Then that’s good scoring when the most powerful motorcycles get “almost” 100%. If any bike powerful enough gets 100% then that’s a toned down score.
There is no actual data I can find to substantiate that a Kawasaki will outlast or is more reliable than a Harley "based on Kawasaki's track record." I've persoanlly seen both have their share of great and bad examples. From my personal experience, the Kawasaki is cheaper to maintain and own. But also, both deliver unique and compelling value propositions.
There are quite a few sources out there indicating Kawasaki’s superiority of any measurable factor (cost of ownership, MSRP, warranty coverage, cost of parts, etc.) over Harley. Other less measurable stuff like long term reliability and looks would have to come from long term owners of these types of bikes. Going through various forums, Kawasaki appears to have far fewer problems than HD. Just google: “reliability, harley kawasaki” and go through the websites that pop up. I cannot testify the sources are credible, but unfortunately that’s all I got to check for info. As for the looks, it is a subjective topic. I personally like the look of Harleys more.
L O L, you didn’t look very hard.
Well then - enlighten me with your data sir Lol Dog Man
Anything built on a Japanese assembly line is most likely more reliable than an American made product. Just the way it's always been.

I wish it was offered cheaper but without a useless stereo. Let's be honest: my Cardo EDGE JBL intercom and iPhone most likely outperform any expansive fancy motorcycle stereo and touchscreen dashboard. Yes, a screen that supports wireless CarPlay can be useful. But, stereo still is the most useless motorcycle feature ever.

Won't happen and even if it did, 1k thrown into even a 103 Breakout and the Kawasaki couldn't keep up and there's not a whole lot that could be done to increase Kawasaki's power. No cams, no big bore kits, no real intake options, exhaust options are extremely limited. My stage 3 114 Street Bob that I paid 14k for and put 3k in parts into (I did all the work) will shred a Kawasaki 1700 like it's standing still. 135 hp compared to the 1700's 90 hp and 145 tq compared to the 1700's 115 tq at the crank. I'd compare it to my weekend/track bike, but I've spent well more than 3k in parts and it's not a bulletproof every day rider like my other Street Bob. I liked my Vaquero, it was a very dependable bike, but the motor in that bike isn't make for performance. Yamaha should have put their 119 in more bikes besides the Stratoliner and Raider, though. That was a beast engine and Yamaha screwed up by not expanding that into other bikes. If they'd have done that and taken enough of a marketshare, there would have been enough of a consumer base to really work the aftermarket.

Agree. Many factors go into making a bike an ideal choice for an individual. For some people a Harley would make a lot more sense! (Like if they get a good deal and have a dealer nearby)
@emadreviews I like the vrod it's fun ,but the best deal for anyone starting out is usually a klr 😆 🤣 Harely davidson prices are kinda high right now. There are so many reasons why the road glide is a better deal and better value even though it cost $4000 more. Kawasaki needs to reevaluate if they think someone touring America doesn't want or need infotainment. From color options, infotainment, dealership available along the road to customizing and performance upgrades, Harley is the clear winner. I hated Harleys for most of my life. I've only owned metric bikes. But wanted something that was better for touring. The vaquero is the bike I wanted.........but I bought a Harley. And I'm glad I did.
You my friend are drinking the Kool-Aid if you think a Harley is a better bike. I owe a new Harley and have owned a few of the years. Harley has been in dire straits for a long time and have had a track record of poor builds and quality control on their engines. This is a fact and from experience. I love my Harley and enjoy riding it but as soon as I bought it the whole engine was disassembled and all new parts installed were all S&S components. 15k worth of aftermarket parts to make my over priced Harley to run like a reliable Japanese bike. As I said I love Harley’s. I love the look and cosmetics of the bikes but the internals are garbage and Harley knows this but they don’t care about the customer…hence why they have been in rough waters for years. With proper maintenance intervals that Vaquero will outlast any Harley on the road. Pull you top end off the bike on your Harley and have a look at your pistons. At 2000km minimum the carbon buildup will look like a bike that has been ridden with 500,000km. Kawa, Yamaha, Honda, Suzuki have and will always build a better bike. That may hurt you to hear but unfortunately those are the facts.
@@VincentVagabond 😂😂😂
I haven't spent any money on my Harley engine wise and it'll out perform ANY OEM metric cruiser. I used to think all the Harley guys were drinking the Kool aid as well. And maybe they are to a certain extent. But if you want a bike that you can modify to your heart's content, it's a Harley. If you want a bike that you can just make a beast of a engine out of, it's gonna be Harley. There is virtually no aftermarket support for the vaquero. If you want a bike that has infotainment (which means something to almost everyone that doesn't wear adult diapers), it's gonna be Harley. Maybe YOU are the one drinking the Kool aid.
@@nrgrlsd9931 I have been a motorcycle mechanic for 22 years. 8 of those years a master motorcycle mechanic. You do know why there are a ton of aftermarket parts out there for Harley right?? To fix Harley’s problems. S&S alone have solved and fixed 100% of Harley’s issues internally. When they had the oil sumping issues on new bikes their fix was drill a hole in your bottom end and install a vent…which did nothing to fix the main problem. S&S solved it with their oil pump and cam plate. Harley would have had to recall a ton of bikes and figure out a way to fix this issue which would cost way to much for them. Once you went aftermarket to fix this issue there goes your warranty. Between old school technology and poor quality control Harley will continue to go down hill. Do you know how many Harley dealers shut their doors in the past 5 years? A ridiculous amount! You can certainly love your Harley. I love mine. The problem is if you have a 2016 and up M8 that is stock you are going to be dealing with severe issues if you don’t get some aftermarket parts in your case. You have no idea how may M8’s I have pulled apart with low KM’ with major issues. In regards to drinking the Kool-Aid…yes sir I am drinking it. My flavor is the truth and reality flavor. All day and everyday I have a harley engine apart fixing cheap internals everyday. Some of those engine internals made of plastic.
@@VincentVagabond this is UA-cam. Stop writing novels. You write all that and you don't say shit. Yeah, I know why there is a huge aftermarket for Harley. Because people love Harleys. And people love to make their Harley set apart from everyone else's. Most of that aftermarket isn't even about the engine. Buy your little vaquero pull up on all your little metric buddies and talk shit about Harleys. It changes nothing.
@@VincentVagabondI have to agree with you on this. I have been riding Harley’s for over 50 years. A motorcycle mechanic for 33 years. I have 5 Harley’s two of them M8’s. The guy arguing with you has no clue on what he is talking about. Both of my M8’s are completely full of S&S parts which is the only way to stop these engines from exploding. Junk, cheap internals with very bad quality control issues. I have seen left over engine shavings inside cases from drill holes that were not cleaned out. On brand new bikes. It’s only a matter of time before Harley goes under. I love Harley but not afraid to admit they have major issues. Keep writing your novels to amateurs that have no clue Brother! 👊🤙
1:29 If I am only saving $4000 then I'm buying the HD....
Yup. Just on the resale value
Yeah I think it's the biggest fault of this or any Jap cruiser, there just isn't enough of a savings over Indian or HD. Used these would be a great option though, if you can find one.
There is a brand new one of these near me right now, brand new 2023, $13k, over $6k off sticker. I would never consider this bike for $18k. The depreciate bath would be massive at full price. Still probably hard to sell used regardless.
Harley is a cheap Harley. Just scrap.
Yep.....its an illusion for the midlifecrisis dudes...
Slow down bro you might get a ticket
Oh, I wasn’t speeding at all! The speedometer was off Officer.
What's wrong with a cheap harley?
Nothing!
What makes the Vaqueros look cheap is Kawasaki cheap paint job of flat black everywhere. It looks like crap and a big turn off. The design and the build of the Vaquero in some ways is superior to a Harley 60 year old design.I love Harley’s! I’ve ridden both bikes and the Vaquero handles and rides easier. Why pay up almost $20,000 more for the name of Harley. It doesn’t ride or maintain any better than the Vaquero. Any one can do a lot with $20,000 in your pocket, plus most folks can’t tell the difference between the two bikes.
Lol… 60 year old design? Cant tell the difference? You clearly are living under a rock and have no clue about the Harley lineup of today…smh
Why does everybody that don’t own a Harley seem bitter at them? That skit at the end is bs 24:00 you talk shit on the bike that that one is built to imitate, 🤦♂️ and that bike cost as much as a basic road glide when it’s all said and done.
Harleys are great bikes! But as a challenge, leave a link to a 2023 Harley Road Glide here that’s close to the price of this bike.
Imitate ?? Indian was first in 1901....then Harley imitated Indian in 1903...Do your homework properly . Harleys are just copies...sorry☝️....😂 i mean very overpriced copies of the original. Look at the price of a sportster.....its hilarious 😂😂😂😂
@@emadreviews 15:10 your initial excitement on vaquero test ride was fun and your motorcycle review enthusiasm is good. Gonna subscribe 😉
@@pleun315The real Indian Motorcycle Company doesn’t exist anymore. It died decades ago. Slapping a sticker on a Polaris doesn’t mean it has any heritage linked to the real IMC. You newbs are really sad…🙄
@@RoadieWingZZ do your homework properly lady....Indian was first in 1901......Harley is just a copy of that they needed 2 years for God sake 😂😂... ....Everyone knows that ... ...say what you want, but these are facts ! Adiooos 👏
Bro they make motorcycles for men. They're called Harley davidson
Your bike’s brand does not define your masculinity.
I wouldn't buy a motorcycle named Vaquero
LOL, there is that!
Cheap copy and ugly. No resale value. Requires an Ivan tune right off the floor. Dated console and stereo. Lots of plasti-chrome and cheap paint. If it was 6k cheaper then all this would be ok. As it is no thanks. But if it makes you happy then I say ride and enjoy.
The polar opposite of this bike is the one I reviewed recently and its video is going up tomorrow morning! The 2023 BMW R18 Transcontinental Option 719. A $30k work of art. Make sure you tune in to see it! Cheers
Cheap copy of what ?? You mean Harley ?? Indian was first in 1901.... Harley copied everything in 1903..... By the way, every Harley sounds Japanese for years, the soul is gone, sales dropped, thank God for quality bikes like these
@@pleun315But Ilthe real Indian motorcycle company died decades ago. Slapping a sticker on a Polaris doesn’t mean anything as far as true lineage and heritage goes. Your misguided attempt here reeks of the “I identify as a…” crowd. 🙄🙄🙄
@@RoadieWingZZ do your homework properly lady....say whatever you want....Indian is the real deal, the original one from 1901 ! Harley needed 2 years after that to make a copy.........it will always be the nr 2 😂😂😂adiooos 👏
I traded my Vaquero in for an Indian Challenger. I will never look back. Challenger is a far better bike than the Vaquero and Road and Street Glides
Are you by any chance close to Seattle? I’d love to review your Challenger!
So the difference in price between Kawasaki V and HD is 5k but in the end is going to be 10k because hd has one million all possible fees
