This is just a simple quick video to show where to grease your trimmer/weed eater!
Good Maintenance on a grass trimmer. How to Do a Basic Tune Up on a Stihl WeedEater. Some of these tips even the pro's don't tell you! This is the right way to grease your trimmer.

it would be a lot easier if you put grease zerk in and use grease gun, but this does and will work.
Instructions unclear. It turned my head and now I can't see what I'm doing because I am staring at the wall

I had a model older than this one that I love. My sister has difficulty with tools that are too heavy and she actually loved mine and found it easy to use ua-cam.com/users/postUgkx_rBCFuDW1zD6blTGhLkvAkxU657uR_lG . This is a newer model but was even lighter which she really appreciates. She enjoys it and I no longer have to go to her house to trim as she can handle it fine. Haven't used it enough to comment on the battery life but lithium batteries last longer than the old style. Being cordless makes it easy to trim the far edges of the property. The entire yard can be trimmed with one charged battery.
This is great for anyone who doesn't realize that this maintenance is necessary. I've used Scaeffer's 238 for years with great results but never realized Stihl made a grease tube that threads right into their trimmer heads (mine isn't a Stihl so never would've even looked for such a thing). Genius move for sure and makes me lean even more towards them to replace my old underpowered Ryobi.

Top stuff, thanks for posting. Alas, the angle gears available in the UK at present for pro grade machines like the FS460 are 'sealed for life' so the grease nipple (for a clip-on gun, rather than a port like you have) has been deleted. No greasing possible and with prolonged and heavy use the oil seal built into the lower bearing wears and the grease escapes. Escaped lube=destroyed bearings/s and gears. A new one is around 130 quid plus tax. They can be rebuilt but it is rarely worth it.
Please be aware that wearing shorts whilst strimming is a Bad Plan. On public-accessible ground there is dog and cat poo and broken glass. We had an operator hospitalised where I used to work. He was a volunteer working on a public open space managed by a committee of volunteers. We had trained and equipped some of their volunteers. This was on a chalk site south of London - there are sharp flints around. He was on his own (naughty) and in shorts (against code of practice) and using a strimmer head on a pro grade machine. A sharp flint fragment flicked up and nicked an artery in his leg. He was saved by a dog walker who was a Casualty nurse. Yes he got damned unlucky, but he helped make his own bad luck. Hope this is useful.

Heres how I did my ryobi straight shaft gear head. It has a rounded head screw with a torx fitting. I couldnt find a torx that fit, so I grabbed the round outer part with channel locks pliers and got it loose. Then I used what is a syringe with a small tube that is made to add fork oil into motorcycle tubes at the bottom and put bearing grease in the syringe and injected it into the gear box, then turned my screw back in and got it snug with same channel locks

Definitely turn the head while squeezing grease in the gears pulls the grease all the way in the gear head.

Just add a zerk fitting or grease fitting in place of the screw and makes maintenance so much easier with just a grease gun. If you’re not sure of the size take the screw with you to your local Ace hardware store and they can help you. They sell single fittings.

They don't need grease often enough to justify that for most folks. You also have to accept that little bit of dirt that will be forced in when you use a grease zerk. On regular equipment with grease fittings, I leave a blob on the end of the fitting. With a trimmer, It's impossible to keep a blob of grease there, and highly unlikely that a plastic grease fitting cap would stay in place. It probably doesn't amount to much in the long run, but I'm finicky about lubrication.

If I do mine I think I will consider spraying carb cleaner to remove old grease first. The only negative I can think of is it might eat up a gasket.
Yeah I'd be careful with that too...maybe flush it out with hot water so the chemicals don't eat away at any gaskets?

NOBODY correctly lubes their string trimmers but a VERY FEW repair shops!!! Where I bought my GOOD one, the 90 year-old owner showed me all the tricks and hoops to jump thru on a straight shaft with a 45* gearhead box. And not 1 out of 10,000 owners use 100% GASOLINE (NO ETHANOL) to make fuel/oil mix (ethanol will score the cylinder) , and burn their tanks/carbs EMPTY at the end of use for the season (ruins the carb-diaphragm first then ruin the engine from running lean). How do I know so well? My late uncle used to buy HUNDREDS of trimmers at yard/garage/estate sales and expect ME to fix them for $20!!! Usual repairs would have been DOUBLE new price. That's why he got them for $25. He'd do the same thing with lawnmowers that had been run on E-10.
My neighbor who works with 2 stroke engines all the time said it's better to use Regular gas as to Supreme for small engines. That's not good info?
@@thelazyhandyman the problem in my area is that the only non-ethanol gas is premium. Unless you use the packaged gas with the stabilizer. That would cost a fortune with my lawn tractor. It’s about $10.00 a quart.

I'm vehemently anti ethanol for not only mechanical but political reasons as well. Any small engines (and my old truck) HATE ethanol and growing so much corn to support it rather than growing actual food crops is causing lasting damage to America's farming industry and the land they rely on.
@@thelazyhandyman it depends on where you're at. Where I am, ethanol free is only available in 91 octane, which I believe is far better than 87 or 89 octane for small engines anyway. In all of mine they run much smoother with high octane. Basically the higher the octane rating the more the fuel has a smooth burn than an explosion. Imagine more of a "FWOOM" than a "POP" when it ignites. This is especially beneficial in single and two cylinder engines when the ignition timing is properly dialed in.

The heads of weed eaters, trimmers get extremely hot. You need a grease specially for high temps, or you will melt or burn them up.

It is possible to buy a small brass grease gun which you can refil from a tin of grease it is best to use lithium grease because it is best for gears that run at high speed it clings better to the gears.
Look for these grease guns in second hand tool shops or car boot or jumble sales. You hold the open end of the grease gun over the hole in the inner cover in the grease tin and draw back the plunger and the grease is sucked into the grease gun barral. Then you screw the front end back onto the grease gun.
It works out cheaper than buying a tube. Please check with the manufacturer of your equipment as regarding greasing procedure as it does vary from one brand to anouther or check with local repair man.

2:23 Don't squeeze the way he's showing! Always squeeze from the opposite end of the tube from the opening! If it's a metal tube roll it as the end becomes used.

I think they all have it. I bought an after market head for my BLACK and DECKER two stroke and it had the grease hole. Trouble is I inserted a grease nipple into it and now I think I put too much grease. That thing is hard to turn by hand now!

@@thelazyhandyman Not to worry, remember I used a grease gun so the pressure was greater than when just squeezing a tube. All I did was to remove the nipple and run it for a bit and that expelled the excess grease. No more rattling now. Thanks for the great tip!

Remove the bolt and look inside, if you don't see grease, add a small amount, do not fill it completely.

On cheaper weed eaters with no bolt , drill a 1/4 inch hole in the shaft above the head and add gear oil .
Good tip wouldn't the gear oil be too thin of a consistency? This grease was pretty thick..

Ur nor going to want to fill that thing with much grease it will rob a noticeable amount of power and cause the gearbox and drive line to over heat, unless for se reason u have removed the factory grease then it shouldn't need any if thebgearbox is too hot to hold ur hand on it after using then there is too much grease run it with the plug out and the excess should come out try and check the temperature again

I have an echo SRM-225 trimmer, do you think this tube would also be able to screw into the gearbox screw hole?
It supposed to be standard size for all stihl trimmers. Even if it doesn't screw in try to get some grease up in that b

How do you attach a blade to the wee
weedeater?
When you buy the kit you get a special cup like adapter and when you put the blade in the cup sticks out to the ground so you get some clearance. Same reverse thread so counter clockwise is tightening and clockwise to loosen. Hope this helps! Cheers brother and goodluck!

That's the wrong grease for the line trimmer head. What you are using is for hedge trimmers (notice the picture of the gears on the tube). The grease that you want to use would be "FS Gearbox Grease" (has picture of string trimmer head).

@@thelazyhandyman - I bet a lot of people don't even realize that you need to grease the head and your video helps to point that out. From what I remember Sthil said that the line trimmer spins fast and create more heat compared to hedge trimmer gears, so they require a grease that won't break down with the heat that is generated. I bet having something in there is better than nothing though.

Maintenance is fine with brushcutter greasing, but think about using long pants, helmet with visor and suitable gloves to do these jobs, instead of dressing up for the beach that you look ridiculous.

Bro i had my weedeater working than suddenly it ahut down.i tried to start it again but made noise inside.like.metal rubbing eachother and had no vaccum whats wrong
Do you think you ran it too dry and it overheated? I'd spraying some brake parts cleaner in the lube hole and see if there's metal shavings come out.

All those ppl thinking a grease zerk is a good idea need to get a clue. Maybe you should put a 'grease zerk' in your oil pans as well and see how far that gets you (oh gee, the manufacturers actually know what they're doing 🤔) -
I've heard about car tie rods, ball joints etc...they used to put zerk fittings on them to make greasing easier and makes the parts last longer instead of now where they want you to buy new parts instead of maintaining them. I just see them trying to make more money off people by making maintenance harder. What do you think?
@@thelazyhandyman you can put a 25 cent zerk fitting or a 5 cent bolt. If the manufacturer uses the 5 cent bolt they built one million united they saved $ 200,000 get it
Many manufacturers have gone to sealed bearings because people aren’t servicing the fittings.
So it’s better to have a sealed bearing than one with a zero that don’t get serviced.

@@thelazyhandyman Nothing wrong with what you did... but just if it helps: i believe you added too much grease. There is a whole branch of science for gears and lubricants and personally i think this comes close to being a Stihl gimmic. All you really need for bevel gears is just Some regular 90weight (or 85.. whatever) oil. Same as you add to the rear end (differential) of a pickup truck. The gears actually need VERY little oil, honestly. they give you a big plug like that so you can open in and Pour in some diff oil. Grease is Thick... doesn't carry away heat well. And even less so if there is no air so it can't splash or move around freely. So, just tyring to help you out a bit with stuff... just a little general gear oil in there yearly, or even every 5yrs should keep any trimmer running great forever, for real. Oh, and also, think grease also makes quite a bit of resistance to turn the head, meaning less power, speed and more fuel usage in the end. peace ~
