Seasons’s Greetings Devon! I love English cucumbers but my absolute favorite are Persian cucumbers! You and your mom should definitely try them out. They’re smaller with very thin skin, tiny seeds and a crispy snap! Thank you for another informative and fun video. Keep up the great work and blessings to you and your family.
Wow I just looked them up and they sound great! I sometimes will pick the English cucumbers when they are small, so I'm sure I'd love Persian cucumbers. Thank you so much!
Probably, but we've never grown them hydroponically. I have some in the soil. I'd just be worried about root disease developing in the growing medium since they can grow for many years. You'll have to let me know if you ever grow some.

I didnt really know how o grow strawberries then. I had major issues plugging up my filters. Go look at facebook.com/Schicks-Strawberry-Patch-115875769962657/
Ah I hate spider mites. We had problems with the strawberries in the NFT channels a couple years and stopped growing them in the main greenhouse. They clogged up the channels and they were just in there too long. We have some dormant strawberry plants in the high tunnel now and they did pretty good this summer.
Hi Devon, love your videos, keep them coming. Do you have any issues with perlite/vermiculite clogging the drain pipes? Do you also have to angle your greenhouse flooring for the bato bucket system to work?
No problems yet with clogging...the bato buckets have a u drain in the bottom which prevents loss of medium. Yes the entire greenhouse is built with a grade slope back. Have seen many bato bucket systems built on frames which are sloped in the direction need if the floor is level...hope that answers your question.
Love your videos Devon, so happy to see other experimenting with hydroponics. I've done cauliflower and cabbage before and also sweetcorn. A question, why do you not live your Beto buckets? I use a paint strainer to stop the vermiculite getting into the return line... love kale chips also. Keep up the good work...
Thank you very much. How did the sweet corn do? That would be pretty interesting. Do you mean line the buckets? We just spray them out after we are done. That's a good idea about the paint strainer. We have problems with the roots going down the line some times. - Devon
The algea doesn't grow in them, especially when we use the lids. The broccoli and cauliflower will probably have a little growth on the top, but it shouldnt get too bad because the plants should grow big enough to shade the growing medium.
Hi Devon! You and your Mom are the best! I love your videos! I have one question: Which type of pump do you use to feed the dutch buckets! Sorry for my English but, i speak english just a little bit! Best regards from Italy!!!!
We have seen that the vermiculite layer helps hold in moisture while the bottom and top layer of perlite keeps the roots aerated and healthy. It has also really helped reduce blossom end rot on the tomatoes.
@@HomegrownPassion Thanks, does that include the perlite? Does perlite eventually break down or does the compost simply have perlite like a bag of potting mix? Loved your videos. Very informative. We are building a high tunnel greenhouse and want to add bato buckets for fruiting/vining crops. We will also have a large aquaponics system. Want variety as we will be teaching from the greenhouse.
Hello dear Devon and Katy! How are you? I hope you are all well! I wanted to ask you a question! What percentage do you add vermiculite and perlite to? Thanks. A big hug to you, mom and family from Italy!
Hi Dave! We are doing well thank you! We put a layer of perlite on the bottom to fill about 1/3 of the bucket. Then a layer of vermiculite to fill up another 1/3 and then top it off with a another layer of perlite to fill up the rest. Seems to work well and help hold in moisture. Thank you!!!

Nice video but I was really concerned when I saw your mom pouring the perlite like that, you should know that the dust can be really damaging to lungs long term, as our bodies can't really get rid of it very well (don't trust me, always do your own research). Standard practice (I know it will add some effort) is to wet the perlite before using, that way the dust can't get into the air. Masks can work too but I'd worry about it collecting in the greenhouse and getting into the air as you do your thing.

Hello wanted to ask for your cucumbers how often do you water and for how long.
Cukes are waterered every 30 minutes for 10 minutes using a 1.5 gph emitter
Thank you and how much water does that deliver to each bucket/plant.
Ohh 1.5 divided by 6 😂. Thank you.

Hi
Why you put the cork above dutch bucket?
Omar Alobayki It is to keep light from getting to the growing medium so algae cannot grow.
Do you reuse your perlite ?
Yes, on cucumbers and beans. Then it is composted, and we use it in our bedding plants, flowers and hanging baskets.
Hi 👋 there. Do you have a list for the material that you used and where to buy? Thanks
Hi! We get most of our supplies and materials from CropKing. Here is the website.
www.cropking.com/
Why do you layer the perlite and vermiculite. I use just perlite in my beto buckets.
We have seen that the vermiculite layer helps hold in moisture while the bottom and top layer of perlite keeps the roots aerated and healthy. It has also really helped reduce blossom end rot on the tomatoes.
👍👍👍👍
What do you do with the perlite/vermiculite after you use them twice?
We dump the growing medium and old roots into our compost pile to be used in the outdoor gardens and grow beds.
@@HomegrownPassion Thanks, does that include the perlite? Does perlite eventually break down or does the compost simply have perlite like a bag of potting mix? Loved your videos. Very informative.
