Couple of hints: 1/ If you mix in your acid to your stock water before adding in your nutrients you will probably only need about half of the acid you are using now. All due to ion chemistry which I won't get into now. Just ensure your plants are not hit with too low a pH between adding your acid & adding your nutrients. 2/ Always add your calcium nitrate to your stock water before adding in your Hydrogrow. Again, it is all to do with ion chemistry reactions, but swapping around the order of adding your 2 separate nutrient solutions to your stock tank will result in less calcium coming out of solution over the next couple of days. Don't just take my word for it, try it & see for yourself :) 3/ Use a short stiff hair broom instead of PVC pipe to mix up your nutrients. Really easy! Keep up the entertaining vids!
@@gloriouspopemantom373 Yes, I know most people (& even Masterblend) say to mix the calcium nitrate last, however it is the calcium that reacts with the trace elements to then form an insoluble mixture of compounds in the bottom of your nutrient tank. @@HomegrownPassion Hi sweety! you say that you use tap water, what is the EC of this water before you put the fertilizer, and how much do you put from (Potassium nitrate) in 100 galons tank (378 liters) Thanks in advance for your reply.
Hi Ma’am! First I want to thank you about your sharing nice video. Question: Is it worth like to start like your project and how how much it cost? Thankfully.🌷
Thank you! We use the same fertilizer for the beans as we do for the tomatoes. We actually started them off with the lettuce formula, but they are on the tomato one now because we have tomatoes in some dutch buckets that share their same line.
I will like to start by saying that your channel is so educative and that you both are doing amazing job. I have new interest in farming and naive to Aquaponic and hydroponic farming. I wish I can visit your farm to have a first hand look at the setup, ask questions important to me like costs involved, production capacity(especially for tomatoes). Thanks for all y'all do!
What is your opinion on flushing the system occasionally? Booklets states as it's a must but I just feel like a business driven advice or just if you can't troubleshoot start over. Have you ever flushed the system?
We do flush to remove salt buildup in the system. We try and monitor the plant sucess and let that determine what needs to be done with the nutrient solution.
Really enjoy your channel. Do you have problems with cucumber pollination? I use a camel hair brush. Is there a better way or a plant that works in the greenhouse? Thanks!!
Thanks, Tom! We have self pollinating cucumbers, and they do pretty well. The variety is called Tyra. We do have to pollinate the tomatoes and we use an old electric toothbrush.

Devon do you have a video on the simple timers?? Like the timer in this video.. i,am guessing it,s a progressive timer..on so long every so often. your greenhouse has diffrent systems and timers and i,am kinda confused. I,am thinking the bato buckets are on the simple timer and run off the black stock tanks where the channels run off the big tank set in the ground and the blue tank system??
I have a super small (3 plants) tomato Dutch bucket system in my basement under a grow light. I did the first set up following your recommended nutrients but here I am 3 weeks later and my nutrients read the same on my ec meter. Do I just keep using the water until the ec drops? So I need to add more or change out the water? I don’t see any algae growth currently.
I'm not sure i would just watch growth make sure no yellowing. our ec changes up or down all depending on uptake from plants. if there rowing well just let them go I would say
I have found soaking the screen filters in a dilute bleach solution cleans with the least effort. All new filter are now disc with a black housing, much less algae growth and a longer interval between cleaning.
I have a "First Time" Dutch Bucket System and am having a BOAT LOAD of problems. My PH is between 550-680 all the time. BUT, by TDS seems to be off by a lot, I mixed the Nutrients Master Blend. at 2grm per gal, Calcium Nitrate at .8grm per gal and epsom salts at 1.2grm per gal. I have a 34 Gal Sump and am mixing 80 grm of M.B., 25 grm of C. N. and 40grm of Epsom salts. All my tomatoes. Zucchini and Cucumbers are wilting. What am I doing WRONG? Thanks,
How do you get the water that drains from the dutch buckets that are sitting on the ground back to the nutrition tub? Are they on some kind of pump, or is there a slope to your concrete?
I have a question that concerns growing tomatoes in a dutch bucket system our tomatoes are at a height of 7-8 feet we've had blooms and good growth early on at the lower levels of the plants. We prune and maintain our plants twice a week. problem we are having is very few blooms and no production on the upper levels of the plants. Should we cut the tops of our plants to encourage more blooms and production? any suggestion would be appreciated.

I noticed that when your getting water together for the initial dilution I think you mentioned "warm water" is that correct? If yes does it help the mixing the dilute? I haven't tried doing that but it makes sense to me rather trying to do the same in cold water. Good job
Yes, warm water helps the dissolve. we also fill the barrels and let them sit a few hours to disburse chlorine. (We have tap water)
Thanks for pretty cool video. Greeting from Tajikistan:))
Love your videos from Canada !
How do you recirculate your dutch bucket water if your drain line is laying on the floor ?
Thanks
we don't. the bato buckets are drain to waste. we watch the discharge very closely and make sure we only give the plants just enough, so we don't have a lot of wasted nutrient water.
When you mix the nutrients for the nfts, do the other veggies do well on the lettuce formula? Like the cabbages and fennel?
Yes, they do. Anything I have grown in the NFT channels does well. The only nutrients that are different are the plants in the Bato Buckets (Tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, green beans etc. are using a modified vine crop formula. My next video is going to be on nutrients.
your parents are absolutely brilliant, with climate change getting far worse it will be people like them that will feed America.
Thanks, and I agree! They’ve taught me so much. It’s nice to see more and more people interested in locally grown food.
@@HomegrownPassion does it Pay off compared to traditional farming?
I've seen a lot of pros and some cons, mostly about the energi consumtion costing too much. But thats mostly hydroponic systems that uses Led light which you guys dont use. (Sorry for spelling mistake. I'm from Danmark)
Hi Katy! Great video Devon!
Cucumber question, Do you prune your cucumber plants for fruit growth promotion?
Thanks for sharing. :)
Hi! Thank you so much! We prune them a bit, but sometimes they go a little crazy if Katy gets busy. I'm hoping to help out more this year now that my boys are getting bigger. We do clip off the first set of young cucumbers before they grow too much to get a bigger crop down the line.
Amazing and so good of you to share..can I ask was it trial and error with mixing and with the leaf vegetables adding iron.did you get advice .im asking because what you and your family have done and are doing in such a short time is amazing especially all the success your having .love the video again thankyou so much for all your effort it has such an uplifting affect as well as being informative..take care devon and love to the family from over the pond 😆 paul x
It was a mixture of trial and error, research and advice. We appreciate that! We all have fun trying different things and seeing what works best. I'm glad to get the postive review, it means a lot. Take care too! Thanks, Paul 💚😊
Hello from Kentucky!
Hello dear Devon and Katy! Every day I look forward to your wonderful videos! You are fantastic! I have a question! Do you use tap water or osmotic water for Dutch buckets?
That's very nice, thank you! We use tap water, and it seems to be working fine. Hope you have a wonderful weekend! - Devon
@@HomegrownPassion Hi sweety! you say that you use tap water, what is the EC of this water before you put the fertilizer, and how much do you put from
(Potassium nitrate) in 100 galons tank (378 liters)
Thanks in advance for your reply.

Hi Ma’am! First I want to thank you about your sharing nice video.
Question: Is it worth like to start like your project and how how much it cost? Thankfully.🌷
Yes, absolutely Dont know costs now since we built this 9 years ago
Beautiful setup! What strength fertilizer do you use for your pole beans?
Thank you! We use the same fertilizer for the beans as we do for the tomatoes. We actually started them off with the lettuce formula, but they are on the tomato one now because we have tomatoes in some dutch buckets that share their same line.
@@HomegrownPassion Thank you! I'm going to try some ancient Native America beans in hydroponics and see how they do.
@@HomegrownPassion Awesome, thank you. I raise Rebelski and Sun gold, they seem to self pollinate well, think it might be the circulation fans. Thanks Again!!
Where do you buy your bato buckets and bobbins? Just found your channel and would like to grow hydroponic for my family.
CropKing. Give them a call and let them know we sent you and they will take great care of you. they also have a website
Your dad is a smart man! I’ll bet he even has a spare pump ready to hook up if that one ever dies.
You are right hahaha I know he has at least one!
@@HomegrownPassion maybe one day you get smart like he is.
I like laying over the vining plants as they get too tall. It takes planning to move the hanging twine.
true.
I love your video. Thanks for sharing this. From malaysia
Of course and thank you so much! 💚
i would love to work in your green house, i would do it for free to learn and gain experience!
Do you recycle the drain water from the Bato buckets back through the system or do you discharge it to the drain? Thank you for the videos.
Of course! It is discharged to the drain. We try to set the timers so only a small amount is actually drained out.
I have found soaking the screen filters in a dilute bleach solution cleans with the least effort. All new filter are now disc with a black housing, much less algae growth and a longer interval between cleaning.
Ok I'm trying that, thank you! There was still a bit of build up on the screens even after the vinegar. We like the disc filter better too.
Are they on some kind of pump, or is there a slope to your concrete?
the greenhouse was built with a 6% slope they sit on a pipe. Check out the other videos on bato buckets and you can see how they are set up.
hi devon, is this master blend?
I have a question that concerns growing tomatoes in a dutch bucket system our tomatoes are at a height of 7-8 feet we've had blooms and good growth early on at the lower levels of the plants. We prune and maintain our plants twice a week. problem we are having is very few blooms and no production on the upper levels of the plants. Should we cut the tops of our plants to encourage more blooms and production? any suggestion would be appreciated.
Make sure you take off suckers and leave just one stalk. Pollinate everyday
Really cool!
Thank You!!
Hi,
EC is always 2.3 from beginning till end? Ty!
Hi ! Teacher Devon i v watched this vedio. So knowledgeable
Love from Pakistan ❤
Thanks 🙏 We are very glad to share information. 💚
Will the PVC leach toxins? Much appreciate your suggestion. Thank you.
Not that I know of. The question has come up before, but we looked into to it and asked the manufactures and everyone has said no leaching from PVC.
one more question, where did you find the filters?
Does your water pump (in nutrient water) run continuously 24/7 or there is specific time intervals that you use to manage water supply?
in the hydroponic system it runs 24/7
Hi niece very informative vedio can we use this solution in normal soil?
Hi yes hydroponic nutrients can be used in soil. It is good to flush with normal water once a week or so to clear out any salt buildup.
Thank you. I love you devan. I love you katy 🤗🤗
Of course! Love you too 🍅💚😊

Im trying to grow purple bok choy in a hydro kit, I have floragrow, florabloom and floramicro. I'm testing the water with my PPM and PH (5-6) Monitor seems ok. But the leaves shrivle up and sometimes the tip dry up... im soo lost, could heat be the issue?
ill look into that...thank you
Hello there I would like to get a better understanding on the ventura setup just off of the pump... is it a homemade or store bought item. Can you send me some links please?
homemade very easy to do. if you need help let me know
Wonderful greenhouse, i have a simple question is it possible to have this kind of set up here in the Philippines? Thank you and God Bless. 😊
Thank you so much! It definitely possible. Have you heard of J&Gs backyard lettuce? He builds hydroponic systems, is very nice, has great videos, always responds to comments and is in the Philippines. Here's the channel link. God Bless 💚

What other plants can you use the tomatoe nutrient mix? I hate to think you have to make a separate mixture for each of the plants
We only use two nutrient solutions. The lettuce formula for the NFT system and the tomato vine crop formula for the tomatoes, cucumbers, beans and peppers.
Ladies what is the ratio for potassium nitrate for tomatoes? Please and thank you from Oklahoma USA!
I'll have to look at our formula, we put in about 3 oz into our mix. I will touch on this in an upcoming video.
Hello what nutrients you added to you plant as lettuce or tomatoes thabks you
please let me know what fertiliser materials your are using?
hi when do you start pruning the leaves on your tomatoes, what tips can you share. I'm having a challenge in that some of my tomatoes start ripening when they are still small - any tips on this? thanks
We always prune the suckers and start pruning the leaves when they get bigger and start putting out some good clusters. I'm going to make a whole video on pruning, supporting the clusters, pollinating and leaning and lowering. What are the day and night temperatures? I will ask Katy if she has any suggestions.
@@HomegrownPassion Hi, does get very hot here, at the moment
we're in summer (28-35 Degrees Celsius)
@@HomegrownPassion what is your EC before and after increasing the Calcium when the clusters get bigger? Thanks.
Oops i meant to say Potassium nitrate
Have you ever tried the Masterblend Tomato Fertilizer on your crops?
No we haven't. What's your thoughts on it?
@@HomegrownPassion Well our Hydroponics Company is located in the Caribbean, we use different formations of the Masterblend NPK ferts for different crops. From what we have seen so far with other ferts used, it provided the best results. Their 4-18-38 line is ideal for tomato and other fruiting crops.
NPK for the two prods are relatively close. FWIW, Masterblend can get a bit dinky on the K too like HydroGro. I too have to supplement potassium.
@@teac117
Its par for the course with tomato, you have to alter the N/K ratio for different growth stages whatever happens. Typically its just a case of altering the amount of calcium nitrate and potassium nitrate in the formulation. Potassium chloride (KCl) is also used in some situations
