  • In this final test of Spiderwire Ultracast Invisi-Braid vs. PowerPro, we decided to test the knot strength of the two lines using two different formats.
First, we decided to test the braid-to-braid knot strength of the two lines.
Then, we decided to test the braid-to-leader knot strength of each line.
You can see the full series of tests of these lines here:
    www.saltstrong...
Test 1 - Braid To Braid Knot Strength:
To test the braid-to-braid knot strength for these two lines, we connected each line to a swivel using the Uni Knot and then connected to the two lines together using the Modified Double Uni Knot.
We then connected the strand of lines at the swivel to a scale. Next, we pulled the scale until one line broke and measured the strength of the line, where it broke and which line broke first.
We did this two times, one time with the scale attached to the Spiderwire swivel and one time with it attached to the PowerPro swivel.
The line that breaks first has the weaker knot strength.
Test 2 - Braid To Leader Knot Strength:
To test the braid-to-leader knot strength for the two lines, we connected each line to a swivel using the Uni Knot. We then connected each line to the same piece of fluorocarbon leader line using the FG Knot.
We then repeated the process we did for the braid-to-braid test.
Check out the video to see the results for these knot tests.

Salt Strong thanks for the video. I also checked out the video on the fg knot. Good stuff. If I want to tie a braided top shot to a nylon backing, would I tie it the same way as your video or is there a modification?

Old video now but just some thoughts as I watched. It was a nice test, however the side that broke was ALWAYS the side tied to the door, not the side being pulled by you and they broke the same way. It was nice to see the knot strength and pull capacity compared to the line weight of 10lbs, but a fish isn't a stationary object and can either pull back or be pulled. I would like to see the same test but with a device that can equally pull from both sides at the same rate to better replicate angler vs fish.

Hey Luke: Thanks so much for the unbiased testing efforts and uploads!! I have Spiderwire Ultracast Invisi-Braid (some 15lb, one 10lb) on my spinning reels. Casts beautifully, no twists. I tie on a rod-length of leader to beef up abrasion resistance and knot strength.

I have used both lines for making bowstring center serving, the world's best hmpe fiber made out of spectra and dyneema. Both fibers are very familiar to archers. Low stretch, low creep material.

Hi Luke, Thanks for the braid comparison video! Could you tell me if the Invisi-Braid casts as well as PowerPro? I fish with just PowerPro but would be willing to try the Invisi-Braid if you find it works as well as PowerPro? Let me know. Thanks, Tony

I have used braided line for many years and buy the cheapest for the amount of line on the spool. When Spider wire first came out I had problems with it breaking when I didn't think it should have. Tried it sometime later down the road and it has preformed just as well as anything else. I have tried the more expensive lines that are suppose to be better in the wind and don't see a difference. We fish often many time we go five days each week for speckled trout and red fish.

Salt strong i have done allot of test of strength on stuff more like plastics but very similar. Would u mind doing a test on both lines connecting to leader line and then ur swivel. Not connected to each other just to see if the stress point changes? I just have a feeling it will give a higher amount of force before it breaks and i could be wrong but would like to see please

The lines always broke on the fixed end of your set up as that's the end with the most tention. The end closest to you had the least tention that's why the line never broke on that end. I thought you did good at switching the lines around to compensate. Good video!

Idk I love Spiderwire it holds a knot well and you can't get a better balance between price and quality, I've found 300 yard spools at Walmart for just 15 bucks, Powerpro could never. I've been trying out the Yo-Zuri braid and it's pretty good so far, just had one trip on it so I'll get back to y'all on that.

@@Saltstrong yeah the Yo-Zuri is pretty good for the price used it today caught some small mouth buffalo and little Catfish, was jigging on EZ braid Spiderwire with no luck. I did get a couple wind knots on it but I think that's just cause I spooled a bit too much line on my little 500 size Pfleuger, felt like such a clown catfishing with half ounce weights on an Ultralight 🤣🤣. That's just because some dickhead stole my Bass and Catfish rods out my car while I was fishing the bridge, damn Highway Bandits.

Hey Tony, thanks for the kind words. I still have those lines on those reels and have used them about the same, and the PowerPro is noticeable better in castability (I haven't yet tested the knot strengths though, but my guess is that they'd be relatively the same.

Once again, logically only in the US. There the line is sold by it's capacity, which in this case is 10 lbs. The thickness of the line is never mind, even in reality that is the most important thing to know. Isn't it a bit stupid way to rate the line while basically one line can be thin as a hair and other thick as a finger but they still snap at the same load.

  • @dinefishing

That's not really a good test because most of the pressure is on the opposite knot.

    • @Saltstrong
      @Saltstrong  6 років тому +1

Is there a reason why there would be more pressure on the opposite knot? We have done many knot breaking tests over the years, and there has not seemed to have been a consistent trend on the knots breaking on one side vs. the other in total.

  • @lmsmbassaddict7779

These are so very inaccurate. There is no control for the knots. We all tie different qualities of knots. I always use these with a grain of salt. I'd honestly say with these two it comes down to how well they cast and for how long. I'd say so long as you aren't buying anything super new by a trusted brand, you will be good. I don't like spidewire I prefer PP to just about everything. The knot strength on PP is freaking great. I've never had slippage ever. I will admit now I used fluorocarbon 90 percent of the time and I'm starting to use braid to FC using the FG knot or Alberto. Never had problems with the Alberto and it's really easy to tie. But the FG knot is great too, it's main weakness is when it's being tugged in different directions.

I can't believe 10lb braid got to 19lbs. So 100lb braid might get past 150lbs before yielding and breaking. Good to know.
