There is still a vintage AN-2 flying out of Oshawa Airport in Ontario, Canada. Its age is apparent, but it still has a rugged appeal to it. The modern AN-2 here is absolutely beautiful.

There was an old one with radial engine towering over Cessnas and Pipers at Buttonville as well for many years. I guess someone was lucky enough to snatch one for cheap from eastern Europe in the 90th. Maybe it's the same one as on Oshawa? Can't believe it will soon be 100 years of their mass production. And it's too bad Transport Canada doesn't approve these for commercial use. Would make a perfect bush plane.

You are not far off the mark.. The org. version could according to its manual do a vertical emergency landing. Full stick back, stall vertically to the ground and the pilots could (in theory) make it out the plane in one piece thanks to its weight/ surface ratio, landing gears, and seats. Dunno if it was ever tried in real life though.

A design that looks modern and antique at the same moment.
They took a lot of features that were good on the original AN-2, like the double wing, taildragger landing gear and cockpit which has a very wide view angle.
All suited for short fields which you can barely call runways, it's a real bush plane.
The new turboprop engine, all metal wings and fuselage should make it even better and safer (can you make something safer which already has the best safety records in aviation?)
A plane to consider on some routes in Alaska as well.

It does the service of the Fieseler Fi 156 Storch, only 100 times more. This is a characteristic of biplanes - short runways. This wing design I saw for the first time on a homemade airplane model of the future a few years ago. Children know that box - shaped wings fly well - see their kites in the wind. Yeah but how eager would you be to put 12-14 passengers behind s single radial engine, especially in subzero conditions with 50wt oil thick as peanut butter (creamy style obviously), vs a modern turbo prop like a PT6 or equivalent with 0wt synthetic oil that pours like water at 50f below zero not to mention all the valves, rocker arms, push rods, crank shaft, connecting rods, twin ignition, and the list goes on. Those big old radials are wonderful to romanticize about, but dealing with one in daily operations is an entirely different matter, just look at Buffalo Airlines out of Whitehorse and the nightmare of trying to get these engines to work at 30-40f below zero. The repeated cracked cylinders and so on. The truth is these engines were engineered in the 1930's and first manufactured in the 1940 or earlier. People didn't attempt to fly in conditions that today are routine. My brother just retired off a major carrier after 25 years and about 24,000 hours. I asked him how many times he'd had to shut down one of the PT6's or CFM56's he flew throughout his career and he said never except in the simulator! He stated he had never once had to shut a turbine engine down and flew all over the world on just two

This would be the perfect plane for rough short strips in Papua. Apparently you can't stall it. The procedure for engine failure with no available glide options (I hear) is full back stick; once below 10-15KIAS the leading edge slats pop out and you descend with minimal forward speed and a reasonable descent rate - sort of like a parachute. The main issue is that US sanctions will rule out the US turboprop and necessitate fitting a vodka burning engine with about 20% less fuel efficiency. I hope they just build it in a state not subject to sanctions.

I wonder if this bi-wing concept could be imagined with an oval shaped, mono-wing, for reducing wing span, specifically for use with very narrow landing fields.
I also wonder if lift can be achieved with a dual hull shaped airframe, in which an outer hull, structured to support an inner hull where pilot and cabin are located, similar to newer buildings, which have a duel shell, with structural, pierced support in the outer and pierced shell, for the inner shell.
The piercings themselves would direct air flow inwards in effect making the outer hull/inner hull a turbine itself, with airflow creating a turbine like thrust AND lift through other piercings?
I know many will say it can no be done, but I would like to hear from those pilots, builders on how such a concept would actually function, just for fun!

Awesome upgrade to a reliable airframe. Not the luxury plane we would buy in the west, the AN2 was the short route king of Soviet aviation. In fact, one article I recently read described how the antique version of the airframe could overwhelm South Korean defensive in a simple but super effective assault on SK ground forces by NK. This bird is capable of so much more, and I'd love to be able to buy one!

Huh. I never thought of using a blended winglet to strut together two wings.
Guess the basic An-2 design will be in service for over a century, since they keep making new versions!

It's always interesting to see what aircraft have potential to achieve that. Ones that come to mind: Antonov AN-2, Boeing B-52, Douglas DC-3, Tupolev Tu-95, and maybe Boeing 737 if they can get the MAX sorted out. All except the 737, the one I'm least sure of, are in unique niches that would be difficult to replace, aren't large enough niches to justify development of a more modern clean-sheet design, and all were pretty tough from the outset. I guess the Cessna 172 comes to mind, but that's a bit different as it's a private rather than commercial/military aircraft.

A good redesign of a classic historic airplane. Holy F! The wind at that airshow with respect to the microphone! Perhaps normal in Russia, certainly on the American Great Plains.
Anyhow, a very durable and highly adaptable aircraft. Hope the biplane friction doesn't terribly impede its marketability vs the deHavilland/Viking Air DHC-3 (the Viking Air model of this aircraft to debut once enough of the older single engine deHavilland models become un-airworthy...which will be...uh... I dunno when that will ever happen).

Its actually not that good or better said, its good but not so much for russian conditions. Its composite parts showed up problematic in conditions of russian winter and even bigger problem its their repairs in conditions of russian Siberia or far east. Also there are issues with engine (its american engine and thats big problem for Russia). UZGA abandoned next development of An-2MC and now they are testing LMS-901. They should have flying prototype this year. Its smaller than An-2, just for 9 passengers, max speed up to 300 km/h, range 3000 km. Important is that its much simpler airplane than An-2MS, with easily repairable dural fuselage, russian engine etc. All in all, it should be low cost and much better designed for harsh conditions of russian field airports on Siberia or eastern Russia. What a graceful bird! What people associate with airplanes is that they are expensive, delicate, require long runways, can't carry much, and cost a lot to fly, but they are fast. But they can also be none of these things - sacrifice speed and they become a cheap, rugged, go-anywhere, high-capacity workhorses.
