I got fluent in English just by watching UA-cam. Thousands hours of input in a target language is the best way to learn it. You just need some base vocabulary to get started with it, but once you can understand videos, learning becomes free.

    • @SaludInformada

Science doesn't support your claim. What science tells us is if you listen things, you'll be better at listening. If you speak in English, you'll be better at speaking and so on. You can't be fluent only by listening, you have to use the language. That's the whole point of this video.

@@SaludInformada would love to see, where is was disproven, because I've heard the opposite.

@@sobanya_228 If you haven't spoken to an English speaker, how do you know you are fluent? If you understand things in English, that doesn't mean you are fluent. You have to produce language, you have to speak with other people (not only write) to be fluent...

Hi Christian. My name is Mike Woods and I am an Australian English teacher working in Taiwan. Your video is a breath of fresh air. I totally agree with you. A long time ago I arrived at the same conclusions. Teaching English is an industry, videos, books, magazines etc etc etc. It all makes money. This does not mean that online teachers are bad people. Only that they fall into the same pattern as everyone else. When my students tell me that they must learn grammar I ask them two questions: "Could you speak Chinese when you were seven years old?" They always reply, "Yes, I could." I then ask them, "How many grammar lessons did you have BEFORE you were seven years old? They just look at me and cannot answer. There are so many questions, like this one, that a teacher can ask a student to expose the truth of the situation. So, good luck, keep going and I wish you all the best for the future.

I'm a seventy six year old native English speaker of the English language. I have been living in China for eighteen years. My eight year old Chinese step grandson, loves to correct mistakes that I make when I read stories to him that he knows. Sometimes I make mistakes when I'm not reading out loud. We never stop learning, laugh at small mistakes, we will remember them better that way, and feel good about it. A great video, great content.

Such positive and purpose driven podcasts especially all your podcasts help improve English and give people knowledge about right approach towards language . Hi Christian, I don't agree with your claim to stop trying to learn English via youtube. I am a 72 year old Italian who loves to know languages. When I was young in Rome the war had just ended and there was hunger. For me there was no possibility to study, and even less to study languages. I am now retired and have been in Kenya for about a year where I tried to learn the local language (Kiswahili) and the official language (English)
Since I discovered your channel, thanks to you, I have learned a lot. Now I'm back in Italy and I take advantage of your help. What I like most is that your "lessons" are like conversations because your way of dealing with linguistic issues is engaging ... I am intrigued and make the topic absolutely interesting. Now I have returned to Rome and I have no opportunity to practice or converse in English, for this I must thank you for the help and the company you offer me .... Yes Christian I have not used an inadequate term. You offer me company, education and every day intriguing points of view on learning methods.
Happy New Year and thanks again.

I totally agree with Christian. You should have a great conversation with friends around the world is the best way to learn English and I disagree just with one thing when you watch and listen to youtube channels in English you increase your vocabulary and listening skill, but you don't have to watch just the videos where people teach you how to learn English you try to see funny videos like the Ellen show or interesting videos like TED Talk, learn a new language is an amazing experience and enjoy the process is the most important thing.

This means that you don't need to know grammar and you don't even need to read, but you're right when you say you have to practice the language. For instance; if you like some group of music, you can watch videos with interviews to the group, reports about their songs, etc. If you like football, bikes, nature, travel, history, animals or whatever you like then watch UA-cam videos about it.

Most English courses are designed to capitalise on people's lack of autonomy. They purposefully discard critical thinking because tycoons are interested in protecting the sanctity of their products. When people realise that language is not a commodity but a vehicle to transmit their most fundamental human emotions and ideas, then they will truly grasp the importance of learning a language.
Christian, you're absolutely brilliant. I'll definitely share this video with my pupils.

Love your classes. I think is the first time I understand almost an entirely speech without subtitles. I'm from Spain. Thanks!

I loved this video, when I tell my students that it took me 12 years of studies and practicing, and even spending 6 months in Toronto, and it was difficult, their reaction is like...really? and I´ve been teaching for 6 years and I'm still learning... when I tell them that they need to practice, talk , talk and talk. they get all confused because all they know is grammar.

Double thumbs up to you Sir Christian. Your content is certainly essential. No sugar coating and yet bold and direct. I found this superbly helpful when it comes to learning English. Unlike other English teachers, who master marketing/sales just to get more subscribers, you speak the truth. Please continue your journey on helping non-native speakers to learn the language and communicate better. Looking forward to more of your videos.
