I have my own technic to learn English tenses. It is completely different from a traditional one which is proposed by many schools and teachers.
You just have to memorize at least 12 sentences, one for each tense which describe your life situations. Use them in your daily life as you need, just change needed words. That's all.

      Simple:
      I like sleeping. Do you?
In 2008 I was fourteen. I'm old now.
I will be in London at 5 p.m. I think.
      Continuous:
I'm running right now. Let's talk later.
I was sleeping when the fire began.
      I will be being busy at 5 o'clock. Let's meet at 7 p.m.
      Perfect:
Have you ever been to England? I haven't.
I had just got home when she called me.
The game will have finished by 6 p.m. Who will be the winner?
      Perfect continuous:
How long have you been learning English? I have been doing it for 3 years.
I had been waiting for 1 hour when she came.
I will have been running for 1 hour then I will do exercises for relaxation.

This is so good! I explain the tenses the same way to my students -- but they still can't use them until I force them into a MILLION situations when they have to choose the right one and use it.
Also, although in some situations "will" and "be going to" are interchangeable, in my thinking there is a specific difference in a number of situations. One is when you come up with an action that is a new idea spontaneously vs. when you have decided before. When we prepare an imaginary birthday party, people offer how they will contribute ("I'll make the cake!' "I'll bring the sandwiches!" "I'll decorate the room!") A person who was previously sent out of the room will be informed about the birthday party and will have to offer ways to contribute:
    "I'll make the cake!"
"Sorry, you can't, because I'm going to make it!"
"Okay, then I'll decorate the room!"
"No, sorry, you can't because I'm going to decorate it!"
Also, the weather forecast says: "It will rain a lot next month." But when I look out the window and see clouds, I say: "It's gonna rain!"

My name is Abdiaziz Idiris from east Africa , somalia
First I want to thank you for this simple and logic way that you are explaining the topics. I watched only two videos of this channel and many others from other English channels. The differences I can say 1) the simplicity
    2) the method of your explanations including body languages , how you are giving the examples, and how you are attracting the attentions
    3) the scientific way you use for the explanations rather than narrative method which many channels use that most of them seam it is a copy from one another.
OK again and again thank you for this

  • @giulianamit

I think the use of present simple in English, like you have explained it, is something genial because we live present just for a moment; one moment before is past, one moment after is future, so if I have to talk about this message I have to say: when I was writing "moment" and I have to say: I am going to write "Thank You". In this way, or we use present simple to talk only about a moment or we use present simple out of time. Genial!
Thank you for your explanation of present simple out of time line, this is genial!

Italian native speakers struggle with Past Perfect Cont. and Future Perfect Cont. because the Italian grammar doesn't have the continuous form in the past nor in the future. As you said, the past simple is used for a specific event which happened in the past, eg “I went to the shop at two o’clock yesterday.” But it is also used for ongoing things which won’t be repeated, eg “I went to school in Sydney.” I love the way you described the past perfect.

    • @Canguroenglish
      @Canguroenglish  7 років тому +1

Hi Jason! For me an ongoing thing that won't be repeated and a specific event that happened in the past are the same thing. All events occupy some period of time, be it five seconds or five years, so it all depends on HOW you are looking at the event, from which ASPECT. Of course, YMMV!

Indeed, english verb tenses are usually difficult, especially when we try to use them during speaking. I used to think, that we should know and use all of them, but it wasn't true. Usually, we use 3-4 verb tenses in common situations (speaking). I have never heared some of them in conversation. However, being familiar with all of them is helpfull during writing. Thank you for clear explaining!

Hi Christian, You have forgotten one tense in the future : the present continuous (which we no longer call that among linguists in France, we call it "Present Be+ING") this present has a "future" value. It expresses a planned future. When you say "Tomorrow I will take a train home" s a project, but not a precise one whereas when you say "Tomorrow I am taking a train home" there's a fair chance that you know the time when the train is departing and that you already have a ticket booked. The fact that you use a present tense makes it a very certain future. That's my input. Thanks for your lessons they are great and very clear!

    Hello Christian,
I found this video very useful.
I'm trying to improve my English, though I've been learning it since I was eleven (now I'm 65).
Respectfully vocabulary, pronunciation and writing skills, I believe that being good at grammar is of utmost importance.
I've got to be quite honest with you - I can't be a grammarian.
By watching your videos I sincerely hope that'll help me.
I look fwd to hearing from you soon.
    Best rgs,
    Miodrag
