    My mom gave me a plant when i moved into my first solo apartment, and man, this plant never need water and it was in an area with, literally, no sun light. It kept perfect color all throughout the year. When she came to visit me I was excited to show her my new pad and I pointed out the plant and if she remembers giving it to me and she said yes. No sun light very very little water. She was impressed. And she looked at me the only way a mother can look set her son and she told me it was plastic. She told me she didn't think I would be responsible enough to take care of a plant. Instead I wish she would have looked at me and simply said it looks beautiful. To this day I have two black thumbs and I have to paint my dead lawn every six weeks. I have a degree in agriculture

      That's an awesome story... hahaha... I have a similar one or not: long ago I bought a fake orchid because I killed one before and I really liked the look so I didn't care, I had a fake one. My dad came to visit (from another country) and stayed for about a year. He had regularly watered the orchid and felt good about himself because the orchid was always in good shape with the the bloom. I didn't know he was doing that until it's almost time for him to return....we had a good laugh and I think about my dad every time I see a fake plant...

    Golden Pothos is def the easiest plant I've ever had. It was my 2nd or 3rd plant and it's grown like crazy! We've given cuttings off of it, divided it into 3 separate pots.... just super easy & fast growing. I even have some in my bedroom growing in just water. Amazing! Love your videos!

    I bought a Chinese Evergreen for my daughter to have on her desk while studying for exams 3 years ago, and it's still beautiful and going strong. She has just moved out to go to college and we were able to take one of the babies and re-pot for her to take with her to its new home! Super easy to care for. I don't baby it at all. Water it when I remember. A great beginner plant!!!

    I absolutely killed a ZZ, AND rescued one (parts of one)...thanks to you. :) I took cuttings from a coworker, not even knowing if they'd root, but had no idea what it was. After planting and a couple couple kitten mishaps it was ok but not really thriving. So, I did what made the most sense and put it in bright light. After moving it around some and still finding it sad and yellowing I saw your video on Low-light Plants. I've been into house plants FOREVER but only discovered a community of plant lovers and videos a few months ago. Silly me. Anyway, I saw your video, stuck it in a dark(ish) corner, and BOOM! It almost immediately shot up two new stalks. I mostly just leave it alone now. It's not great yet but it is definitely coming into it. I'm also rooting another... Yay. Thanks for the help.

    One of my first plants was a half dead looking peperomia. I really wanted it to survive because it looked so pretty with pink stems and variegated leaves. After a couple of months it suddenly started growing new leaves and now, a year later, it's really thriving and is so big and full! I even managed to water propagate it. So yeah, from my experience with a peperomia i would say it's a fairly easy beginner plant, as i had no idea what i was doing back then :)

    • @debh3404
      @debh3404 6 років тому

      Bobbi Kalmer I’ve grown them for 35 years and they ARE pretty much easy Care Plants. But I wish more people would just Google and look up how to care for them. Where I think most people fail with African violets is that they think that they need to stay wet. And then they drown them. They need a thorough watering, yes, but will turn to mush if they sit in water. And they need a bright spot to live but not direct sun (unless it’s gentle morning sun for a short while). Sounds like you have it all figured out 😊

  • @crystalfrager3828
    @crystalfrager3828 6 років тому

    Hi Harli,
    Another underated or maybe not as well known plant I would also suggest is a "Florida Beauty". It prefers humidity but it grows really well as a beginner plant. I water it once a week with purified water. I used a diluted liquid fertilizer about twice a month over this summer. Also, airate the soil about once a month before watering. This will help to promote new growth around the roots and moderate light to indirect bright light. This was one of my first plants. I love it soooo much!🌿
    I also have a snake plant, parlor Palm, (3) Curly Chinese bamboo Plant stalks, Baby Rubber Plant and Croton on Fire. Dracaenas grow well too. Be mindful that both the indoor and outdoor temperature and environmental air quality can also play a role in changes in your plants growth as well. I have not heard any UA-cam videos so far that mention this factor. I hope this is helpful. ☺😊 - Crystal

    I would also recommend Jade plants. When their leaves are drooping and feel weak, you can water them. I’ve had one since the beginning of my plant obsession (almost a year ago), I’ve repotted it twice and it’s doing great

    • @HarliG
      @HarliG  6 років тому +1

      OH good to know! Jade plants are so pretty!

    • @debh3404
      @debh3404 6 років тому

      I’ve tried jade plants plenty of times and I always kill them! I’ve finally learned not to overwater succulents but it’s a hard lesson to learn coming from growing African violets for so long.
      The ones that I DIDN’T kill with ‘love’, They all got mealybugs. And I had to throw them away because I had an extensive African violet collection and I could not allow mealy bugs to continue and spread to the violets.

    • @elenagibbons4719
      @elenagibbons4719 6 років тому +1

      Deb H huh. My aunt had a huge Jade that got mealy bugs and eventually she just had to trash the whole thing.
      Would you recommend African violets? I’ve seen some in stores and they’re quite pretty but I’m worried about killing them and/or what the general care requirements are.

    • @debh3404
      @debh3404 6 років тому

      Elena Gibbons Yes, I highly recommend them! There are a few do’s and don’ts but they aren’t hard plants to care for.
      Do water thoroughly but leave no standing water or root rot will happen quickly. Don’t water in till almost dry. You will know that you waited a little bit too long if it droops. If it drips water lightly, Then the after it perks back up give it some more water until it amounts to a regular watering.
      Use half strength fertilizer. They get fertilizer burn if used full strength (generally). I use the method where I give the weak fertilizer in the water every watering.
      Bright indirect light. Some violets don’t mind the early morning sun but light filtered through sheer curtains is great. I’ve always had mine under fluorescent shop lights but have switched to LED shop lights and they are doing great.
      You can rinse African violet leaves/plants, but you cannot allow water to stay pooled in the center crown of the plant or it will get crown rot.
      Remove lower leaves that look like they are fading. When the neck of the plant gets too long, time to replant it. I can only think of a few violets that need a pot bigger than 4”. AVs roots need to be touch the bottom or sides of the pot to bloom. Remove any blooms that are fading out. More blooms will not grow again in the same leaf axil. One bloom stalk per leaf axle.
      Violets hate high temperatures but love normal household temps. Most people don’t put them out in the summer because of heat and sun.
      Too much information and I hope I didn’t scare you off!

However, this past year I got into plants and decided to get another oxalis. I got a purple and green one and I have found them to be super easy. Not only do they do well no matter where I put them, but when they don't do well, I just put them back and they will sprout back in no time. One wilted beyond repair shortly after I got it home from the store, then once it bounced back it had spider mites out it. Both times I cut it down to the soil it grew back with vigor. The other one got aphids and I did the same thing with it and got the same results. I can't believe all those years ago that I threw away what I thought was a dead plant. :hangs head in shame:

    You should make a video on how to care for a ficus Audrey. I’ve looked everywhere on how to care for them and found little info on them. My boyfriend bought one and within 2 months it lost all its leaves. I still water it hoping it would come back to life lol but I think it’s gone gone. Sadly.

      My monstera siltepecana is being picky. I water it when it’s dry and it gets plenty of indirect light. I took cuttings and it’s doing better in water. And I never could grow peace lilies. Love your videos. I agree it is odd how plants are different in everyone’s home. Haha

      Kathy Gilbreath I don’t get along with Peace Lilies either. They grow well for me but I just have “trouble “ with them not fitting in to my watering schedule and style. I know I can do right by them but I just don’t like them enough to pamper them.

    Had my ZZ for two months and have yet to water and it’s just continuing to do so well. My Chinese evergreens have new growth constantly and I rarely water then and they’re not in the brightest locations. I have three monstera Deliciosas and I water them MAYBE once every two weeks and they’re growing like crazy! I have three varieties of snake plants and I haven’t watered them in two months and they are doing phenomenally.

    Hi Harli,
    I was wondering about hanging plants! (The ones that come in a plastic hanger) I’ve searched all over. I want to know if you have to repot these? Or just change to soil after a certain time? I’m learning and want to keep them happy and alive for as long as possible :-) thank you!

      Hi! I normally repot hanging plants I buy right away! You can definitely keep it in the same pot, but just change the soil. It really is all up to you (: Either way should be fine.

    Harlow I need your help! I’ve been propagating in water like a pro UNTIL I transplant it to soil... then it dies!! Beautiful roots then bam.. adios amigos. What do you do once the roots are established in water? Do you transplant into wet soil and keep it fairly wet? Do you use regular soil? I’d love some advice on the process once a cutting it rooted!! Thanks in advance!!

    • @debh3404
      @debh3404 6 років тому +1

      Kivonna Coccia After you plant a water propagated plant into soil, do not continue to keep the soil wet. You don’t wanna let it completely dry out but you do want to let it get to where there is air in the soil or else it’s going to suffocate. When it gets into soil it needs to grow the roots in a different way. Water roots and soil roots are not the same. So make sure that it gets some air by allowing it to get almost dry enough to droop then don’t overwater it to where it stays wet for too long again. It should adjust pretty quickly. But if they are failing after you put them into soil I am betting that you are overwatering them. I hope that helps! U used to do the same thing.

    I recently killed my spider plant by watering it… tell me how that happens? Like it had fungus gnats so I let the soil get super dry and then I watered it all the way through and made sure it wasn't sitting in any water. After day 1 and 2 the bottom leaves started drooping. By the 3rd night I think it was the plant was starting to brown up from the bottom and it had completely flopped over. I'm pretty sure the soil was cold and wet and wasn't drying out but like geez. It's because I said to myself that I've never had a significant plant die on me.

    • @HarliG
      @HarliG  6 років тому +3

      oh you TOTALLY jinxed yourself. The plant heard you say that, & was like "oh yeah? I'll show you"! That is definitely just a fluke :P

    • @debh3404
      @debh3404 6 років тому +1

      When you have a plant that has gotten that dry (you still did the right thing to kill the gnats) when you do go to water it, it’s best to give it a light watering instead of a full watering. Then wait a day or so and water it a bit more. What happens after a plant becomes that dry and gets a lot of water is that it takes into much water to quickly and can explode the plants cells and kill the plant. The water gets into the cells and can’t get back out.

    Hi Harli,
    Another underated or maybe not as well known plant I would also suggest is a "Florida Beauty".
