Very true, i never realized this but your comment forced me to think about it and my perception for golden pothos has been changed just because you said something and it striked my mind.
I have SOOOO much golden pothos, and it all started with one plant I got to help keep the nitrates under control in my aquarium. now, I've given away at least a dozen starter plants that I propogated, and still have plants in 3 aquariums, and....5 pots lol
Thank you for shifting the spotlight from rare & expensive to these beautiful, more common plants. I love that Harli has said many, many times how much she loves her golden pothos and has never shamed us for having "basic" plants. 🧡🌱
Tell me about it. I spent 17 on a purple wandering Jew 😳 I was like OMG if it wasn't for the fact that I really wanted that plant I would have said 🖕🏿 it 😂. But yes plants are getting to be expensive, only plant I don't mind spending money on is diefenbachia and that's only cause their my all time favorite.
The “common” plants are my fave too! I love seeing them just boom with growth! That’s my favorite part of house planting. Give me all the Pothos and ZZ plants!
You have such a kind and beautiful soul. You always make me feel so happy when I watch your videos. And when you cried about the goats, your kindness just shined through.
I went to the garden centre the other day with the intention to only buy ONE compost bag, but ended up getting “lost” in the house plant section.. long story short, I did sooo much damage to my bank account 😭😭😢.. I’m living off bread and water for the month, but they’re so prettyyy 😬🌿
Don't forget Snake Plants. The basic ones are usually cheap and family and friends may have divisions to share. Also, one of the reasons I started loving you girl is how emotional you get sometimes...just like me. I was liking this video all along then you noticed the goats and I loved it! Thanks for the content and happy growing!
I'm a jungle cactus enthusiast. Holiday cacti, rhipsalis, epiphyllum, etc. I love them. I love them the very most, actually, and they're such easy sharing plants because cuttings root so easily. I wish I had more Canadian plant friends, because sharing cuttings is one of my favourite things.
Since we don’t get imports from the US mainland due to strict agricultural security, we don’t have to many options when it comes to rare plants since you need to know people to get them into the state. However I really like this video because it shows that you don’t need to spend a fortune on plants to have a nice plant collection. I personally make it a goal not to spend 15 bucks on a plant and while it may not get me rare plants, I still love my collection. Keep it up Harli.
I have almost all the houseplants you featured and I love them all. Once you get a plant that thrives you are hooked for life. Fellow plant lover... Thanks for your great videos 🌿🌱💕
I love that you speak up for the little guys, the beautiful plants that so many people seem to discount. I love them and have quite a few of the ones in this list.
I can't afford the expensive plants, I'm just happy with the common ones . My favorite is the monstera right now, I can not believe how easily it is to care for.
I really like that more people are talking about the affordability of plants. Things are getting out of control. We definitely need to have more people talking about this.
Now that I realize it, a lot of people who love plants, their parents or a close relative had/has plants! We grow up around them and either hate or love them and either way we end up falling in love. *imagine Harli’s baby*
You are adorable. I love your philosophy, your spiel, your ingenuousness, you're a great mother to all your babies. I am so glad you have not become jaded.
One plant she didn’t mention are Air plants! So inexpensive and easy to care for, plus they bloom and give pups like crazy! 😜 They might not get large like regular house plants but you can find cute stands to decorate your home!
I love my "cheap" plants just as much as my more expensive plants. I bought a HUGE Philodendron Hope for $20 at my local grocery store. She has doubled in size in 3 months. She's a statement plant for sure and so easy going. My Tradescantia Zebrina was $16 and holy smokes, she has gotten HUGE. Easy care and a good grower. I'm looking at once of my dieffenbachia (I forget which variety) I bought for $6. I feel like so many folks purchase plants because they are on trend at that moment and not because they really love them.
i 🖤 this a lot!!! i needed orchid bark and some pots today and got a 5" Monstera Deliciosa for under 10$ and they had some Hoya Australis Lisa for 10$ as well... i feel like many Begonia are pretty cheap as well
Wish I could say the same. My first year owning one and lost all it's leaves. Total bummer. It doesn't like, low light and being over watered. Even just a bit! Overall, I found pothos to be more forgiving than philodendrons. Maybe I will change my mind after owning them longer than a year. If I don't kill all my philodendrons, that is. The Rojo Congo, Brasil and Silver Sword, all dropped their leaves. I'm nursing them back to life, but it takes so long, compared to a pothos.
@@Christodophilus interesting. I don't live in a sunny place at all so my philo's are all in shade. They thrive! It's true, I try not to overwater them tho. Maybe it's the soil composition that they don't like?
I agree! One of the first plants I got and it was so low maintenance, and it has gotten so dangly and remained thick. Might have just been lucky but I am loving it and I think I paid $8 for ot
@@justavideodiary Thanks for sharing your experience, it gives me hope they are tougher. The soil composition was something I am considering experimenting with. I suspect, not enough aeration? I've bought a bag of perlite and when it's the growing season again, I'll try repotting.
@@Christodophilus I used perlite (about 35%), coco coir( 35%) and warm castings (30%) mix I made myself. This is what I'd use for most my plants tbh and they seem to love it. I’m so glad you focussed on houseplants not because they are rare, but because they are beautiful! My first was a cactus and a pothos more than 40 years ago and still love them today!
I just want you to know you are the reason why I am now a plant momma! I came across one of your videos on UA-cam and I only had a bamboo plant I had received in a valentine's arrangement. I went plant crazy after watching a few of your videos. And just a few days ago created my own plant IG! Thank you! I love the plant community! Also thank you for saying on your IG that our collection doesn't have to be full of rare expensive plants for it to be beautiful! I was feeling a little subconscious about that!
I’ve been having a ball buying small rooted cuttings of various plants. Very affordable and usually you can find them for not a bad price on Etsy ☺️ thanks for featuring some of my favorite plants!
I have been a collector of cacti and succulents for a while now. But since following your channel last year, I'm finding that I'm increasingly gaining more interest in all kinds of plants. There's some beautiful plants out there with beautiful leaves, colours and textures! I'm wanting plants that actually need me to take care of them. Love your channel - you've definitely opened up my eyes! My motto now is- "Plant lady is the new cat lady"! x
I have pothos that has been in my family for at least 30 years!! Just keep propogating it and it never dies. It is also a tradition now that my brother and I have at least one in the house from my mother's original 'mother plant'. I love them, especially cause they survived my lack of green thumb years!
You are the best! thank you Harli for addressing this by bringing the plant community into the real world. The affordable world. I bring cuttings into work of all my common inexpensive plants and my coworkers think I am a green goddess. Keeping it real... again thank you
I love your arrangement suggestion. I have several plants that I separated from an arrangement from a special occasion and I love that they're associated with a special memory.
I paused the video 9:57 and went to Walmart and purchased 4 new house plants... I’m so disappointed in myself. I think I have a house plant addition 😭😭but I’m very very happy with them😁😁😁 it seems like they make the air in my home so much sweeter and I only spent $20
Oh man, I looked up a cebu blue pothos yesterday to see if I could add one to my collection and it was $10 for a tiny cutting and upwards of $60 for a nice plant! Holy shamoly! I'm newly crazy about plants.. has it always been like this? And monstera albo on my wish list... that ain't happening.
You definitely have a beautiful collection. I love your enthusiasm for the plant game, it's contagious. I have been watching you since... IDK forever, sorry I haven't been much of a commenter before now. Love you and your channel!
Thanks for the reminder of how beautiful all plants are regardless of the price and/or commonality. Spider plants are a common fave of mine. I love the little flowers they get and the BABIES!
Absolutely agree with you!! These plants are solid! So easy care and that’s why they are popular. I have all you mentioned and they are my reliable humble plants! Love them!!! 🌱🌱🌱
Everyone is saying the reaction to the goats is because you’re a mother, let me tell ya, I don’t even have kids and I get that way over animals! Lol it’s hard not to when they’re so freaking adorable! Anyway, I recently stumbled on your videos and I love them! I am always telling people about how underrated pothos are ❤️
YAS!!! I have a crappy, part time job at Pizza hut and at first I thought I could never afford a large plant collection. I started growing my collection in march (start of co-vid madness) and currently I'm at 67. The most I've spent on a single plant is $18 (got a caladium from a local nursery). I wish there were more nurseries in Southern Illinois, where I'm at, but Walmart, Home Depot, and Lowe's usually always have a nice, affordable variety. 🙂 I've yet to purchase any online because I'm leery of online purchases and even more leery of purchasing live plants.
I love the goat part. Favourite part of the video. In previous video, you were studying a spider and I thought that was cool too. I like to teach my kids to watch animals and bugs. I think the emotions come from being a parent. I got so much more emotional over everything after I had my first child. It’s like you just feel the whole world more, and appreciate everything!
Love this video. Enough of the "UNBOXING RARE AROIDS!!!" clickbait consumerism. Loving plants isnt about having the latest and rarest, it's about nurturing and enjoying whichever plants you have. I'm not saying that it isnt great to expand your collection and get whatever it is that brings you joy, but you arent any less of a plant parent if you got all your plants at walmart than if you ordered all the unique and most expensive plants you could find from NSE tropicals...
Yes!!! Let's end the hyperconsumerism in the plant community! I went down that path myself a while ago and now I regret some of my purchases. The endless haul and unboxing videos give me anxiety now, and no one seems to talk about how the hyperconsumerist mentality is all over the houseplant community on UA-cam especially :(
Yes! I have a wishlist of specific plants I want, are beautiful to me, and that I know I am capable of keeping alive in my current living situation. I have to keep plants that either thrive in low light or do well under grow lights, that aren't too finicky, and some that I can overwinter through dormancy and put outside in warmer weather. Most easy, beginner plants are suitable for this, and I'm starting to build a small collection but it's all plants I love and bring me happiness.
I'm really really new to this subject, but heck I just want my room to feel like a forest. Crazy that people would get that into it. If it's green and alive I'll be happy with it.
I have never paid more than £34.99 for any of the plants in my collection. I feel that big plants can be such an investment, but often times you can get younger smaller versions for pretty decent prices! Schefflera arbicola Dracaena Fragrans Boston fern Calathea Orbifolia Peace lily Tradescantia zebrina Pilea glauca They're all ones I've found cheaply that weren't already on your list! I agree with and have a lot of the ones you mentioned in your collection. My favourites being Jade plant, Hoya krimson princess and monstera!
I literally just got two golden pothos cuttings from my work, because they have like four around the building. one of the cuttings just had a new baby leaf and has another one on the way! 🙌🏻 I am propagating them in water, I really really hope it works! I may need to watch your propagating videos again. 😅
I swear you are the sweetest 💛 cuttes person I think i have seen thank you for having a video on affordable plants 😊 we need this every now and again thank care and be safe.
You can totally find cool things for $20 or way less at big box stores. Where I live those types of stores buy overfill plants from local greenhouses and nurseries, so if there is a big box store on your normal route and you pop in often you can totally build your collection on a budget. Ruby cascade has been seen where I live at Home Depot as well as lemon lime prayer plants, Hoya Hindu rope etc. for usually like $12! I just got a monstera adansonii with 12+ leaves already growing up a pole for $7.99 last week. It’s like a treasure hunt with these big box stores lol but I love it. You never know what you might find and it’s awesome when the price is something I can justify. 🙈
@@edithtierce8209 I found a hoya krimson princess for 1,50 € at a local plant shop, that's less than what you pay for a normal black coffee at a café over here. ... went back a couple of weeks to get a second one and potted them up together...I swear they have doubled in size since then. Haha. That's the thing when you buy really small plants...they are more affordable but you gotta invest more time with some of them and not all plants are fast growers.
THIS! I will only buy things that i can find in my local nurseries. Don’t think i can spend hundreds on a rare plant (more like 1 leaf cuttings / tiny seedling) and take on the anxiety of getting it shipped. 😬😬
Chlorophytum comosum. You either love them or hate them. I love them. They grow super fast and will takeover your space quick, but I do very well with them. Agree on all the others you mentioned. Have a wonderful day!
I’m loving all the content you’re putting out rn Harli! One of the videos I would like to see is just a good ol come plant shopping with me. Idk I just always like your come plant shopping with me’s 🤷♀️😂
I honestly love the common houseplants... kinda even more than the “rare” ones. They’re always easier to care for. Golden pothos is probably my favorite in general. So Easy, so beautiful and I’m a sucker for the vine/trailing plants
My grocery store always has African Violets! They’re always $4.99 and they’re a really nice size! I’ve figured out how to water propagate them and I have a new AV and 3 more on the way!!💚🌱 Spider plants are very affordable and you can propagate them Peace lilies are super affordable! I think ace always has them for under $5 dollars. They put out babies like crazy and they grow super fast!
Hi Harli! Loved this video. Do you have any videos that talk about the expenses that come whe you start growing a plant collection. Humidifiers, types of soil, plant food, etc? My collection is getting bigger and I’m starting to struggle in that aspect
Absolutely LOVED this video. I also loved what you said in your IG stories. I think you hit the nail on the head. It’s been something that’s been so frustrating to me for awhile now, and I’m so glad you said something. I’m also SO HERE FOR the basic plants. They’re staples and some of them I’ve had through generations. They’re so underrated. Thank you SO much for this video and showing the goats and goat man. I legit tested up too. Too. Freaking. Sweet 😁
I got some large gold bowls from Target almost exactly like those for $9/each that I plan to drill holes into to hang from. The chain is fairly inexpensive at hardware stores :-)

Check your local big box stores often! I found mine in Home Depot
@@jaclynns.jungle I'll keep an eye out, thanks! Usually our Lowes has more interesting stuff than Home Depot but I check both anyway. :D
I have nothing to add, just wanted to leave a little bit of love here. I think you're the best Harli.
Everyone is saying the reaction to the goats is because you’re a mother, let me tell ya, I don’t even have kids and I get that way over animals! Lol it’s hard not to when they’re so freaking adorable!
Anyway, I recently stumbled on your videos and I love them! I am always telling people about how underrated pothos are ❤️
You can find 6” Peace Lilly’s for usually less than $10
I was in Carbondale for a little and although not alot of nurseries I found great local house plant sales especially during the summer.
I love ❤️ some of your hanging planters Harli
I love the goat part. Favourite part of the video. In previous video, you were studying a spider and I thought that was cool too. I like to teach my kids to watch animals and bugs. I think the emotions come from being a parent. I got so much more emotional over everything after I had my first child. It’s like you just feel the whole world more, and appreciate everything!
My Hoya krimson princess is my favorite plant in my collection! That one got me obsessed with hoyas
Oh. My. Gosh. Her response to the goats at the end had me laughing so hard! 🤣🤣 BEST part of my day!
WOW! I have never seen that root phenomenon before!! Excellent video! Good ideas🤩🤩🤩
The goat interlude 🐐
Great video 👍❤️ common house plants need to be recognized. Thank you for sharing 🤗❤️
Yes! I LOVE holiday cacti and I feel like they never get any love on social media!! More thanksgiving cacti representation!
I have never paid more than £34.99 for any of the plants in my collection. I feel that big plants can be such an investment, but often times you can get younger smaller versions for pretty decent prices!
Schefflera arbicola
Dracaena Fragrans
Boston fern
Calathea Orbifolia
Peace lily
Tradescantia zebrina
Pilea glauca
They're all ones I've found cheaply that weren't already on your list!
I am propagating them in water, I really really hope it works! I may need to watch your propagating videos again. 😅
I swear you are the sweetest 💛 cuttes person I think i have seen thank you for having a video on affordable plants 😊 we need this every now and again thank care and be safe.
Lots of good information and good plant tips. Many thanks!! Loved the goats as well. So cute!
I love the pot where the spindactus pictus is planted.
I REFUSE to spend over 20$ for a plant lol. Big box stores and some plant shops keep me sane lol.
I have over 100 plants and never spent more than $40 😊
@@jaclynns.jungle teach me your ways
I love these! Another good one is a china doll, I got mine from walmart for $3 and they are a lot easier than people say!
So excited for this! I’ve been collecting for almost 2 years but have spent $$$$ on plants and need to go back to the basics!
Harli you're so cute. Your videos always make me feel like we are just hanging out like old pals.
I love the way you talk about plants 😍
My grocery store always has African Violets! They’re always $4.99 and they’re a really nice size! I’ve figured out how to water propagate them and I have a new AV and 3 more on the way!!💚🌱
Spider plants are very affordable and you can propagate them
Peace lilies are super affordable!
Too. Freaking. Sweet 😁
Omg where did you get those beautiful gold hanging pots?!
I got some large gold bowls from Target almost exactly like those for $9/each that I plan to drill holes into to hang from. The chain is fairly inexpensive at hardware stores :-)
This was a great entertaining educational and so me video I wish you were my neighbor! Just one thing to add... the thanksgiving cactus , it’s leaves are in shape of a turkey and the Christmas cactus it’s leaves are holly shaped🤗💓
