Yea, I don't think he is even aware of this or was for quite a while xD I mean I remember writings with some of people in Japan connected to the Touhou circles that were equally schocked that I knew who the characters were, even though I am from Poland, also the most humorous part of it that he might had actually unintentionally made it universal because he used classical Japanese mythology, still I think I can understand why he feels that Touhou is hard to understand in many ways it is accurate, because of the way he writes its definitely harder ironically for Japanese than for Europeans or Westerners as some of the themes are actually closer to our culture than that of Japan,which he might had not realized especially when he was writing the manga and putting all the complex themes in them.

Well, one reason why ZUN thinks Touhou Project is hard to understand for foreiginers, comes from the fact that as Japanese person he learned history from Japanese sources, so he doesn't for example understand that the very same cultural elements were actually heavily exported outside of Japan including the classical Japanese mythology, stories about Kaguya hime and some older examples of obscure wood prints that were freely sold in ancient Japan and were often taken back from Japan as tourist souvenirs,meaning that ironically these lesser known obscure elements of Japanese heritage, which might be forgotten by the Japanese people themselves, are actually well known outside of Japan because they landed in someone's collections and are now preserved in museums...something that Japanese themselves might not do because they viewed certain erotic art as vulgar for example and examples of high art unlike the foreign people who bought these or were given these by the locals ,which is why it's actually foreiginers who better understand Touhou Project than the Japanese.... Ironically this difference between local point of view and the point of view from the Outsiders perspective is also a sort of a theme in Touhou Project itself.
