CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Karen (Laura Linney) mops up the gorilla problem with a laser just before the volcano erupts.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Good gorillas meet bad gorillas while human beings search for treasure in this jungle advnture saga. R.B. Travis (Joe Don Baker) is the ruthless head of Travi-Com, a telecommunications firm on the cusp of a major breakthrough in laser communications technology. However, Travis needs diamonds to finish the project, so he sends a group of men to Zaire, where he's told that a large supply of the gems can be easily found. When the men go missing, Travis sends his trusted assistant Karen Ross (Laura Linney), a one-time CIA associate, into the jungle to find both his staff and the jewels. Hoping to keep her mission a secret, Karen travels to Zaire in the company of Peter (Dylan Walsh), a researcher on primate development who is hoping to return Amy, a gorilla who has been taught sign language and can "speak" English with the help of a glove-controlled computer device. Also travelling with them is Herkermer (Tim Curry), a Romanian with a secret agenda: he's convinced that Amy can guide him to the Lost City of Zinj, where he believes that King Solomon's Mines are located. Upon arrival, the group is met by Monroe Kelly (Ernie Hudson), a self-described "great white hunter who happens to be black," and they discover that the jungle holds a menace that they weren't counting on: a tribe of bloodthirsty gray gorillas. Congo was based on the best-selling novel of the same name by Michael Crichton.

I still remember as a kid, when Amy says "ugly gorrilla, go away" everybody in the theatre laughed. Was a pretty epic moment 👍
Lies again? Heavy Rain
@NazriB shut up you're so bitter and whack
I remember too
So this wasn’t a dream after all
It was real.
Dallas Warfield I agree
I used to get this movie mixed up with The Time Machine, and i couldn't remember which one was real.
@@ThorDMaster Lol everyone was in the same situation. Probably this film got a bit inspired by the aesthetics of The Time Machine (1960).
No it wasn't I remember it well
I understand this
nice to know you can find pre-cut diamonds in the wild
TheyGoWhootnnn Lol
It wasn't like that in the book...
Look's like we have to visit Congo then ;)
Somebody get Joe Don Baker on the phone STAT!
100th thumbs up and convenient? I THINK NOT!
“Maternal Instinct, long may she reign.”
Perfection, Amy is the best character in Congo, hands down.
This movie scared me as a kid now as an adult it's funny
lol same here.
TauntingBatmanV1 yet so good still
Still good and terrifying, but yes, it is fun to watch.
Same
Lol I couldn't watch anything ape related for a number of years after this film, now I'm laughing about it XD
"What is that?"
"The lastest thing in communications!"
So cheesy, but my absolute favorite line in the entire film. lol
dunno man i like the 4th of july line better
That's probably what was said about the first cell phones
This was actually the first experiments for 5G
“What about them?”
“Put them on the endangered species list.”
A much better line, IMO.
0:51 that never gets old
Agreed
if you live in detroit or new orleans
Yes I remember
@@alejandrob.4961 If you go to your family reunion.
Laura Limney can always bring the conviction in her acting regardless what production she's cast in.
She's a pro.
Man, I miss the 90s, everything was simpler and that made life peaceful. This movie looks simple but it has that feeling of going to the cinema and just enjoying a movie for the sake of it.
I know I miss the 90s my childhood.
Yea before everything had to be historically and scientifically accurate... I remember it started with Gladiator when people said there has never been an emperor killed by a Gladiator so the movie wasn't real or something along those lines...lol
Pfff
This made my eyes roll so hard that I busted a blood vessel. I’m in the hospital because of this. Shame on you
Yeah bro I prefer the era of renting movies from Blockbuster over watching any movie you want at the top of your fingers anyday. The whole experience was fun. Kids nowadays don't even have to leave the house and they can have whatever they want
Lovely Laura Linney and one of the two best lines in any movies...."the latest thing in communication" and "put em on the endangered species list".
FurryAminal Plus freakin' lasers!
oh great, a furry. of course your gonna be at a video that has animals in it.
I disagree ''who is kafka'' will always be in my heart...
FurryAminal
That line is so badass. As awful as it may be to some people I love that line and this scene is so memorable
Damn, Laura Linney was seriously damned cute back in her day.
She still is
@@randywhitten7804 Right on! ^_^
Check her out in 2000’s Maze. ;)
Real pretty.
She's the definition of a strong female character. 😊👍
That dude shoulda brought his proton pack.
Or a phaser rifle from the movie "Star Trek: First Contact."
Agreed
He'd risk crossing the streams
Thats meant for ghosts.
@@Lostraven2420 Yes but no.
You should remember how much damage they do when it misses. _hotel scene_
That put the phrase "Kill it with fire" in another level
The volcano said: "oh you gotta laser? Gtfoutta heeya"
The lava said: Badaba boopi

The volcano actually said:

this one of the most realistic "what if laser weapon existed" scenario I've ever watched on screen. It would be a straight concentrated beam with limited and regulated intensity so that soft targets like tissue and cloth would get effortlesly pierced and cut while more dense material like rocks and thick plates would resist much longer.
There's a lot of things that are wrong, though. If you can see the beam, it's probably the last thing you ever see; anything strong enough to cut like that is going to be strong enough to blind if any of it is diffracted away from the beam's main path. Furthermore, you wouldn't expect the wounds to cauterize like that. A laser weapon's going to work by heating the water at the point of impact to boiling, at which point tearing occurs. The action's going to be mechanical at that point, and the wounds are going to be at least as bloody as a gunshot wound, probably more so in the front from the lack of backwards force from the bullet.
@Lord Admiral Spire They're deep inside the jungle, near an erupting volcano. The air probably has like 90% humidity and there should be dust/ash from the volcano/mineral springs in the air, all which can very easily make the laser beam visible.
@@tsovloj6510 Interesting comment. Thanks for posting it.
@@tsovloj6510 if it’s concentrated it wouldn’t spread to blind but would be very bright though. If directly at the eye it would blond but directly means into the eye so straight through the head since it is a laser.
Also depending on how the heat spreads will it tear flesh by its heat but it is a quick cut and with such heat it will cauterize immediately as well as boil to cause blisters. No splitting or tearing will occur unless the beam is stuck on them then yes that would be the case
What about those little handheld lasers? You can definitely see those beams clear as day.
Gorillas: start showing compassion and mercy for the invaders of their territory
Humans: shoot lasers at them

This is the part Matt never shuts up about when talking about this movie but damn is it awesome!
ChronoEdge lol favorite movie. That's what my sister says. She like shut up Matt. Yes Matt that a laser. Lol
Oh, that Matt... ;)
MATT????
I don’t understand how this didn’t get an academy award. Between the script, the acting and the realism of and set design? Goosebumps. Move over Godfather, Citizen Kane and Pulp Fiction because this powerhouse is open to the public.
Lmaooooo
You really don't need to see the rest of the movie now.
considering this is the last 5 min... yea
I like clips that give a pretty good sign that the rest of the movie will be trash
STOP EATING MY SESAME CAKE!
Yeah you do; for the auto-turrets they have earlier in the movie which kill even MORE gorillas
@@elliothill3953 Tbh I would think the rest is far worse than it is judging from this.
I loved it when she said to her former boss, " I told you that if you sent me here for some damn diamond, and not your son, that t you'd be sorry. ZZZZZZZT!
He deserve to have his company bankrupt. I mean he send his own son to and dangerous place that he might not even return and when that failed he send his son's wife/ girlfriend to find his son and the diamond and when she learn that he cares more about the goddamn diamond than his own son that when's she have enough and destroys the satellite.
“This is for you Charlie.”
0:45 one of my all time favorite movie scenes
"Put them on the endangered species list"
What is that thing? "The latest thing in communication."
Hot damn, that lady had some good one-liners!
Such an under appreciated movie. Loved it when I was a kid and still do today
Then youre a smart intelligent open-minded person. Unlike most people sadly
A one megawatt laser in handheld form.. What a dream!
This movie still holds up to this day!
that really rustled their jimmies
What......
@@damage6836 it's an old meme but it checks out
aaaayyyyy lmao
This movie was so underrated, freaking awesome from start to finish.......
Agreed. No hate deserved here
LOL 2:06 gets lit on fire before the lava even touches him lmaoooo.
I saw this movie when I was 8 and it scared the hell out of me. The only time a movie has ever scared me. Now it looks like some B-rate SciFi channel flick.
Of course it does, it has Bruce Campbell in it.
This is hip hop.

1:26 When you finally get that op weapon in a game.
Metal Slug: Laser gun!
That LASER is one hell of a weapon!! LOL
I remember seeing this scene for the first time and absolutely loving Laura Linney for her badassery.
Hey didn’t you know strong women didn’t appear in movies until the 20 teens!?
You know it’s a solid movie when you have killer gorillas, lasers, tim curry
this scene alone makes me wish that they would make a Congo videogame
it could be in the style of the Turok games
Do you mean that you wish they'd make a new one? Because they did make one. "Congo The Movie: The Lost City of Zinj" (1996, SEGA Saturn)
Yeah when I saw this movie as a kid it first reminded me of Turok :)
@@vannidar
I remembered that game. It was a point and click game right?
Nice. It should be rebooted then made into a game
1:30..Luke Skywalker moment.
Daniel Ceballos UNDERRATED COMMENT LOL
That’s a good name
I approve
Lol 😂 cool
If it lost the arms and legs, you could call it an anakin Skywalker moment.
“What the hell is that?!”
“The latest thing in Communication!!”
F*cking Gold… lmao 🤣
Love that line
Things I learned from watching this movie:
1:56 Contact with lava will make your body combust.
Knowledge is power.
Agreed
And melt off all those unwanted pounds! (Lol!)
Instant hair removal
She turned this whole scene into metal slug. And I was always here for it.
It’s been over 20 years for me and still the best one liner in cinema history IMO
1:42 My degree in communication finally pays off.
the most hilariously epic deus ex machina ever
1995 was a solid year for movies. Another great one from '95 was Outbreak.
The climax of this film didn’t need to be more complicated than Ash Williams and Winston from ghostbusters blasting giant apes with lasers.
Depressed gorrilla at 2:04 just wants life to end and runs at lava.
LL gets two great lines there “Put them on the endangered species list” and “the latest thing in communications”. Only in the 90’s.
0:40 I always like part when Amy roars, from saving Peter from getting killed from the Gray Killer Gorillas, and the Gray Gorillas heard and looking straight at her, horrified and surprised
I know right I also love that scene I still can’t stop laughing at their reaction lol 😂
That's the best gun in movie history!
That’s the best gun period!
0:54 oh god is that a power glove? keep away from her
Lol 😂
The dreaded infinity gauntlet
ballistic fist from nv
When I was young I watched this movie and thought it was a huge success.
That was beyond putting them on the endangered list. They put them on the extintion list.
Laura linney pretty much plays the same character in everything she does
Forgot how much I watched this as a kid.
*1:59** lol best part*
Lol.. they tried.. they tried. 😂😂😂
For some reason I've got a feeling that Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs took a lot of inspiration from this.
Right down to cast. Bruce Campbell is in that too.
Those are some top notch effects
What I enjoy most about this film is its creativity of its special effects & it's technology used at that time to make the film so popular then as the story is rolling we see the gorillas suffering because doing much defending their territory then following up by man' s attraction to greed of huge diamonds then the action of the extreme power of laser to wiped out the gorillas & last the surprise power of the volcano it's explosion passing through the land which made the film so impressive .
It's definitely criminally underrated and underappreciated
1:22 "what the hell you doing anyway" 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Lol 😂
What am I doing? I’ll tell you what I’m doing, we’re getting out of here! 😠
Remember when movies were allowed to have animal villains, and you were allowed to kill them? Remember when movies were allowed to have the line, "People come first. Then gorillas?" Remember The Edge? Gosh, I miss the 90s...
Me too. Can't stand the 21st century anymore
Unbelievable that this movie is 20 years old. Very good movie for its time. 20 years ago, most people didn't own a cellphone. But at the very end, the idiots threw away the $20 million diamond.
a lot of people died to just retrieved a 20 million dollar diamond and the company's still very rich.
She didnt want the faceless company to have the diamond. She was concerned about her ex husband and even told her boss that if she thought for one minute that this rescue mission was about diamond and not the human resources. She would make him a very sorry man. And she did when she blew out the circuits in their satellite. Good for her. Travicom would have dominated the communications industry overnight and she would have probably gotten killed for a cover up or fired upon her return.
Greg Cameron exactly! She teaches him a lesson
Thank you Funhaus for leading me here
Amy! fire. laser.
Man I remember this movie and it’s one of my favorite
All the leaves are brown, and the sky is grey...
This Scene is Perfect and Needs to be Taught in All Film Schools.
damn now i want to watch the movie again
This movie scared me shirtless for weeks as a child, it still does
Hope you aren't too cold.
What a waste, all those diamonds. They could easily have collected several diamonds per person
When you just barely run out of the heavy machine gun and the laser gun drop appears - Metal Slug
As silly as this movie is, there are some good bits - mainly Linney and Hudson's characters. I also liked Lindo's character, the corrupt Captain. "Stop eating my sesame cake!" It was a great line, and incidentally made me want some sesame cake.
What about
'This is pure Kafka...'
'WHO IS KAFKA! TELL ME!'
I'd buy that for a dollar!
I’ll be back
It’s worth considerably more than a dollar…especially the ZX600 Series
I remember this part had always got my energy running.
THATS hip hop

When your wife sees other women trying to talk to you
Ugly gorillas, go away. Ahh, my memory of this movie.
I use to love this movie as a kid
Laser tag got too real.
0:36 One of my all time favorite movie scenes
Cool, what are your others?
It's interesting to note that the special effects and CGI in this movie are so terrible, while the special effects and CGI in Jurassic Park, another film adapted from a Michael Crichton novel, are pretty damn good for 1993. This film was produced in 1995 but the special effects, CGI, etc. damn near look on par with 1975. It's a shame because the book 'Congo' is really good. Imagine if this was remade today by a more competent director like Ridley Scott or something...shit has the potential to be intense.
JJ ThaGeneral was it really bad? I always thought the effects were decent even for today.
I'm just glad Andy from ProGuitarShop is safe.
Amy literally saved his life now that is love.
This is my laser pointer fantasy. Congo 2 can have a Styropyro cameo.
That Diamond is basically focusing the radiation from the radio waves of a 80's-90's cellphone. Effectively making it a Laser-Beam.
"Well, I Guess
Crime Doesn't Pay."
I used to watch this all the time when I was a kid, now it's hilarious, I thank my parents for sitting through all those watches haha
1:27 So, Karen Ross became *Karen Rambo* and I'm referring to the nods in Jerry's score here too 🙌🏼 🎼
This movie was my very first PG-13 movie . I was 9 years old
The lava flow in this scene is apparently very accurate for how it works irl...nice.
If that thing was able to burn concentrate carbon from the diamond, a high power laser could do that, after all it would release the energy as a high yield laser..
Very expensive weapon to fire..
1:59 Um.... I'm no expert, but I am 99.9 % sure lava can't move *that* fast.
There are 2 different types of lava flows: Aa & pyroclastic. Long story, & it's just illogical for lava to move that fast.
Famous last words ;D
@@kurukblackflame ikr lol
Not down Wilshire Boulevard 😁
Any lavatologist could tell you that it can.
Pretty fun movie! The only problem was the lack of BRUCE CAMPBELL!
Ernie Hudson probably thought she could've cross the streams
She probably thought a lot things, but with the extensive scientific knowledge and expertise she possesses, crossing the streams was likely not one of them.
Best part of this gem... oh, we have to recognize the Bruce Campbell cameo at the beginning!
His awesomeness cannot be denied!
I like the part about, jamming random, charcoal diamond dust in the laser, and it works as well as a phaser from startreck
dammit even she got 1 of dem burning laser's from ebay, im still waiting for mine...
Came straight from the factory, saves time and money.
I always liked when she said, " put them on the endangered species list." Then fired the laser.
Honestly we need a prequel for this movie
Saw that laser and was like THATS COOL!!!
That lazer beam sound effect tho.
I can't believe that THIS is the movie me and my cousins used to watch faithfully as kids lol
