Perch Fishing On Bobbers (Video 105)

  • You find me heading out on a short trip to a rather overlooked waterway with the pin, compact float rod and homemade Perch "bobber" style floats, hoping to connect with a sergeant or two. On reaching the river I'm met with less than ideal conditions as it becomes apparent that it is still dropping from the recent heavy rainfall and is quite coloured, making for challenging conditions where to begin with it seemed that everything apart from my target species was in a feeding mood.

      Thank you so much for taking the time to post a comment Wayne. I could not agree with you more, just to be out wetting a line is very special, as you rightly say that is what it should be about first and foremost.

    chuffed for you mate , nice fish , always good to catch on homemade floats, use to love fishing with perch bobbers back in my younger years, on the river Stortford and lea, in the little backwaters etc, lobworm or sml gudgeon, got some lovely perch out, pre mobile phone days lol, you've stirred up the memory banks , out comes my old fishing books and photo albums, think I might have to get some bobbers, there's a nice backwater off the trent near me, will take my youngest son out and teach him the ways of the perch bobber/lobworm, as my uncle did with me, cheers mark , you are a true gent for not only doing the video but you truly care about the art of fishing and what it's all about , thank you..

    • @francolinobasco
      @francolinobasco  7 років тому

      Craig thank you kindly for you warm words, that is what fishing is to me, not just the catching, but all the components that knit it together and make it what it is. I think when you look at it we are very lucky, we see many different faces of nature, be that the wildlife or weather, head scratching days and other trips where things fall into place, be that with rhyme and reason and application of watercraft or sheer good fortune. I must admit it was nice to put the bobbers through their paces and actually see them in action. It is funny that you should mention the Stortford as I have friends that fish there and they enjoy fishing that river a lot for perch and chub. I think you're doing the right thing and I would expect a day out on the bobbers for yourself and your son would be a very pleasant way to spend a fishing trip together.

    Great video Mark, I really enjoyed it. I like the way you get your enthusiasm and love of fishing across, and I make you absolutely right, it's not always about size, but the beauty of the fish itself, and the sheer joy of catching them. On a personal note, I personally don't weigh my fish these days, like you, I simply enjoy and appreciate every fish I catch, and love nothing better than simply being out in nature. I'm so pleased you had two nice stripey's, very well done. All the best to you.

    • @francolinobasco
      @francolinobasco  6 років тому

      Thank you John and I actually can understand where you are coming from regarding not weighing the fish, I have come close a few times and I can very much see why you wouldn't, a good days fishing is simply that, a few fish a bonus and you don't necessarily have to put a weight to them to enjoy it.

      Cheers Andy, and that is honestly fine, I really was not sure myself and did mention to a couple of the chaps on instagram messaging what they thought about it perhaps being a hybrid, that is a first for me from this river and in general as I have not previously ever had a hybrid, silver and bronze bream yes, but never a hybrid. You are totally right, the support that she gives is very special and at 38 I suppose I should be driving really or at the very least attempting some lessons.

    Always a pleasure to watch your videos mark and funny you`ve posted one featuring perch bob floats,as I`m currently making some at the moment. I use traditional float materials though........cane,cork and goose quill. That is the first time though,that I`ve ever seen one of those beer can widget things and a float making demonstration video would be good. There`s nothing more satisfying than catching,using tackle you`ve made youself .I`ve gotta agree with a couple of other people,that bream was definitely a bream/roach hybrid. It`s head was very roachy indeed.Keep up the good work sir.......tight lines.

      Hello there Nick and thank you, the widgets are very useful and I thought that they would be such a waste if I didn't put them to some fishing related use, as given their shape they lend themselves well to a float body and would perhaps (with the right clip) make a nice light bobbin/indicator too.

    Nice season there mark with a nice home made float . I'm glad to say the medway has picked up lately resulting in a pb roach of 2.9lb with some decent back ups and some nice pike just under 20lb. I've got two more days on the river before the end of the season hoping for a possible barbel just to finish the season. I hope you can also squeeze in a couple more sessions before the end.

    Very nice Mark! Nice float as well. Strangely enough, I too decided last weekend to have a go at perch on the next occasion, while I was blanking in style instead of catching river carp. Let's hope I'll catch a few. It has been ages, probably more than 5 years.

    • @CB-xr1eg

      HI Mark.
      Yes its renowned for big perch, over the years there have been 4lb,
      4lb 8oz and a 5lb 1oz which was caught by yours truly after it grabbed a gudgeon I was bringing in whilst fishing on the pole for tench in the margin!
      Sadly I don't think the bigger ones are there now as it has been 6 years since I had mine.
      Anyway I think they still go up about 3lb so I'll give it a go.
      I'm going to feed groundbait with chopped worm/maggots/pinkies, and fish on a bomb rod with a worm on a size 14 hook...here's hoping.

    • @francolinobasco
      @francolinobasco  6 років тому +1

      Ooh heck a 5.1 that is a very nice perch Clive, well done, my best river perch is 4.2, caught a few seasons ago now off the Loddon. That is a pity if the larger ones have gone, but if there is still some threes in there it is more than worth a trip or two. Good luck to you mate.

    • @CB-xr1eg
      @CB-xr1eg 6 років тому

      Yes it certainly was very nice, but I can't lay claim to catching it through skill as I was not aware it was around until it grabbed the gudgeon!
      I doubt I will ever better it so I'm glad I have a few photos to look at and remember the occasion.
      It was actually featured in Angling Times and I still have the copy.
      I'll be at the quarry after the perch on Tuesday, I will let you know how it goes.
      By the way, if you make any more Boddington Bobbers and you need help emptying the cans of Boddington...let me know!

    liking the scene-setters as the beginning :-) at 1040 I had to chuckle.: not many anglers can find themselves standing there with a beautiful looking chub, caught on a day of rising colored water, and with a bit of home made kit from a bear can that you'd "only previously tested in the kitchen"! lol, - you've really got the gift (thought no doubt a lot of commitment and dedications goes into these results too), and magnificent looking perch too : this vid really does the species proud and reminded me to target them next season. Did you get out again before the close ? hope so - very much looking forward to the next vid - or maybe a round up of season highlights?

    • @francolinobasco
      @francolinobasco  7 років тому

      Thanks Tim, haha yes at 10:40 I had to suggest to the chub that it might have a little chat with its perch friends.
      I had only previously tank tested them in the kitchen sink so to actually see them in action was nice as such tests compared to flowing water is chalk and cheese, they make for a lovely cheap and cheerful perch bobber float although you either need to drink Boddingtons or know someone whom does. You should definitely target the perch next season, I don't think there is many a finer looking species that swim in our waterways, from their bold scrap, to their vivid stripes and rouge fins they are rather beautiful.

I moved to Suffolk and went self employed, then found little time to go. THIS year having cleared the mortgage, I have promised myself to set aside a day a week for fishing. There's a few day ticket lakes in Suffolk but I'm Struggling to find info on rivers to fish in Suffolk. Can you or anyone else recommend some nice quiet stretches to fish. Ideally free or day ticket but I think I may have to join a club, as it seems all the rivers round here are owned. Cheers Gary

    • @francolinobasco
      @francolinobasco  4 роки тому

      You're welcome mate, simply put because the current and main flow are nearer my side, however the side the float was cast is a slack which are areas you try to look for when fishing on rivers when they are up, especially if looking for perch as nine times out of ten they will be in the slack water where the smaller fish are, as it makes an easier dinner for them.

    • @francolinobasco

      Hello there Marc, I went with a double bulk shotting pattern with these as they are a fairly heavy bobber, you're correct I was just touching bottom and fishing the slack on the opposite side of the river.
