There has been so much innovation in the tech space over the last few years that it's pretty hard to find a camera that isn't amazing, and for around the $2000 price point, there's a whole host of options.
Getting into photo or video can be daunting as you start to tally up the cost of Cameras, Lenses, Accessories, computing, and everything else you might need to get up and started, and with the current economical situation, I think most people are looking to get as much for their money as possible.
I genuinely think that Lumix delivers the best value for money proposition in today's camera market, and that remains throughout their lineup of Mirrorless Cameras and compatible L-Mount lenses.
I was an early adopter of the L-Mount, and in just three years, I have seen this system become one of the most viable camera systems to invest in, both for quality and price point.
    Thanks for watching!

A lot of what I'm discussing in this video may cause controversy, but please understand that I'm FULLY aware of the limitations that come with Lumix cameras, as am I aware of the benefits that other brands may bring to the table. The blessing for us consumers is that the technology behind imaging is moving at super-speed, with new innovations and features becoming more accessible for even less money every year. The hindrance to this however is that there's now so many options at every single price level.
Lumix cameras are extremely well-priced, capable and enjoyable cameras to shoot with. This isn't a lie, nor is it just my personal opinion. The point of making this video was to shed light on the fact that Panasonic as a company are continuing to develop their Full-Frame cameras to be incredibly capable at a price point that allows new creatives to enjoy their products, and I genuinely don't think the same can be said for many other brands.
    Thanks for watching!

100% agree Josh! One of the biggest reasons I went Lumix and haven't turned back since the S1. Not to mention that insane lens deal when the S5IIx came out. Literally got the 50mm for $100 and 18mm for $400 off. Plus the image quality is insane

What your saying is the truth. Lumix cameras are great for the price point. Sony and Canon users spend the extra money based on the brand of the camera. Yes the cameras are good but its also the brand name that people buy. If your asked what camera you use and say a Lumix camera your meant with a oh really. If you say Sony or Canon its - yeah they are great cameras I have the ... Also Lumix cameras are made for film makers. Yes they have made cameras based toward pictures but most of there cameras are for filming.

Lumix fan boy here too. Ergonomics and colours for me. Anyway....Can you please add this point to your seemingly regular feedbacks to Lumix ? Love love the Lumix time lapse function... But it just needs a tiny upgrade to make it perfect - please let us choose the aspect ratio of the video it makes from the frames as this will increase spontaneity in posting time lapses to socials. Everything else about the function is amazing but this last bit is another step in Rush or Premiere that kills the spontaneity for me, as a non pro who does socials for work/hobby. 🙏

And if they want to absolutely smash it with the s9ii.... Rotate the sensor (and screen, even if this means a smaller screen) 90 degrees, but keep the grip where it is. Social stuff is almost always vertical nowadays but camera sensors are still landscape, even cameras for social creatives.... Now THAT would make Linux leapfrog all other brands in a heartbeat..... And bring smartphone graduates into Lumix above all other brands....

I've been considering changing from my Sony A7iii to the Lumix S5II but not everything is as cheap as you make it seem. For example, I need a 70-200 f4. F4 not f2.8 as I don't need the weight or the low light capability. Lumix are charging a whopping £1750 for an f4 version of this lens. The Sony version is just over £1k and the Canon RF version which you say is mega expensive is £1500. Lumix are really overcharging for that 70-200 f4! Unfortunately that is making me think twice about switching as I don't want to have to pay that much more to change that lens.
The lens options and prices are what will stop Sony shooters changing.

I couldn’t agree more! I have a BS1H, a Netflix approved (if that means anything), full frame, 5.9K RAW powerhouse! It’s a box camera which seems to be the stumbling point for most, but if you always have a monitor or recorder attached, the lack of LED screen doesn’t matter.

It's really special how much more the S5 II X offers compared to Sony. Even the FX3 is lacking in metering tools, open gate, IBIS and interface. It has better rolling shutter, higher fps options, and a better AF, but the fact that it doesn't have things the 1000 dollars cheaper S5 II does is absurd. And the image quality is on par, with both having 12.5 usable stops, with the FX3 having an extra stop in the shadow and the Lumix an extra stop in the highlights (which to me is better really)

I got my camera for a great deal, I’m thinking of getting a second one, and I can get one now for less than $1000. But I’m also thinking of getting an S1H, which I can get for $1900 now, practically brand new. I shoot a lot of anamorphic, so for me, this is an absolute no-brainer. Along with the black magic pocket cameras, these Lumix cameras are by far the best deals on the market. And even better than the black magic cameras because you don’t have to add anything to them if you don’t want to.

I have a G85 and a G9. Unfortunately, the G9 does everything I need, got the brilliant VLog option and I don’t need another camera which makes me very sad. The reason Lumix has got my trust is the number of firmware updates both cameras got. I completely agree. I started looking at cameras about a year ago to get my first 'proper' camera with interchangeable lenses. Initially I dismissed Lumix because I read somewhere that Panasonic had effectively stopped making cameras. I found that full frame cameras with IBIS were just too expensive from everyone else and I had narrowed my search down to the Fujifilm X-S10 as the best value APS-C at the time. Luckily I am a slow and thorough researcher (😅) and it was near the end of last year when I heard about the successor to the S5 and so I waited until last month and got the S5 II X with the 20-60mm kit and the 70-300mm lens which was reduced recently too! I'm really glad I waited as I don't think I could have got the same quality of kit for that price from any of the other mainstream manufacturers.

I've been shooting with LUMIX cameras for a little over two years now and one of the biggest factors of me making the switch from Canon to Panasonic was just the sheer value for money that you get. Back when I first picked up my S5 I was blown away not just with some of the incredible professional features that were included (internal anamorphic shooting 5.9K raw output via HDMI for starters) but also that all of it came in a package that cost less than $3000. Not only that, but the L-Mount ecosystem also plays very well with my pre-existing EF lens collection that I had built up over the years, as well. It really is the perfect camera system for my needs!

Started with Panasonic G7 (hobbyist) and it was pretty good so started buying a few lenses. Then after a year or two I spent the money on a GH5 so I could upgrade and use same lenses. Those autofocus issues drove me nuts though. Review after review raved about canons autofocus. So I waited and bought an R7. What a difference. Plus animal eye detect works great. The R7 seems to beat my GH5 in every way for less money than I originally paid. My time with panasonic is over but would like to get some use out of my 4/3 lenses so I am hoping to wait it out for a upgraded OM-1 successor that might be worth a try.

The 30 minutes recording time block in 4K/10bit/4:2:2 is something I'm working around with planning the shooting day.

I wanted/needed a hybrid and this was my best option for me. Fujifilm and Nikon almost had me, and Canon and Sony were just too expensive. Hopefully Panasonic with the L mount alliance comes out with more lenses and some more features for photographers like in camera multiple exposure.

I completely agree. I just shot by myself some photos, videos, and interviews--true hybrid environment--for magazine publication as well as social media, and I was feeling some real imposter syndrome before the job, like: will my S1 and S5 be good enough? I got great shots, and the marketing director was extremely pleased with how things turned out. On top of that, I shot almost exclusively with the Lumix 24-70 f2.8 and 70-200 f2.8, with a few extra shots needing the 16-35 f4 (I was worried it wouldn't do well stopped down in low light, but I was wrong). My prime lenses stayed in the bag except for a few shots with the 85mm. I'm really interested in getting an S5IIx to round out my kit and maybe ditch the S1. At such a great price, it seems like a no-brainer. This was also the first job that I left my GH5 at home and used FF exclusively.

Over my 40+ years of shooting, I have used a large number of different brands. I started with Nikon (which I still have a soft spot for). I have used Olympus, Fujifilm, Canon, Contax, Sony, Leica, and Panasonic. A year ago, I got rid of my Nikon system (the moves that they have made in mirrorless successfully alienated me). I replaced it with the Panasonic S1 and S5. While I agree that Panasonic is less expensive, there are two critical issues that should be emphasized. First, the l-mount system - love it. It enables me to use Sigma, Tamron, Leica, and Panasonic lenses. I dare anyone to tell that they can beat the quality of Leica glass. In general, the glass is good and, except for Leica, reasonably priced. Second, and very important to me, Panasonic cameras work and feel "just right". The buttons are logically placed; the menus well organized. When you take the Panasonic S1 or S5 into your hands, it feels just right. It evokes in me the same feeling that I used to have with Fujifilm Xpro-1 and Xpro-2 bodies. It is also very close to the Leica feeling. Panasonic is a system where I don't have to pick up a manual to understand it. I pick it up, my fingers go to the right places and I am ready to shoot. This is a feeling that I do not get when I use Canon cameras. Very subjective - I agree - but so important. In motorcycling, there is a UA-cam station taht is called Revzilla Daily Rider (I ride a BMW). The host, when evaluating every bike, presents an interesting question - is this something that I would take if I wanted to go riding. I apply that rule to my cameras - What system would I use if I wanted to go out shooting? The answer - the Panasonic S1/S5.

The other 1.8 primes are also weather sealed, have beautiful IQ and are much less expensive than the Canons.

I had no prior commitment to Panasonic and looked at every system with an open mind. Priority is photography which some others (Sigma) do poorly. But I also needed quality video and can't deal with a lack of shutter angle, etc.
OK, so the bit rate on the lower end model is not competitive. And if you want slo mo you'll be scaling up 1080p. But for the price the overall package is a home run.

The thought is how many lens does one person need. If someone is just gonna be a film maker then they simply need the 35 mm lens. If they vlog they use the 20mm lens or can use the 35mm. One can only use one lens at a time.

Interesting take, Josh. Here are (in my mind) the cameras that are close to the S5 II X - Canon R6 II, Sony a7 IV and in APS-C - Fujifilm X-H2S, BMPCC 6K Pro. All of them are excellent cameras and with the lenses, would go into roughly the same bracket as the S5 II X. And the cameras with some features that go beyond the S5 II X are - Canon R5 C, Canon C70, Sony FX3/A7S III, Nikon Z8/Z9. The 8K 60P and 4K 120P options, along with internal 12 bit options in the Canon R5 and Nikon Z8 itself push the capabilities well into the Lumix S5 II X's range.
However, in the spirit of fairness, the S5 II X is really the sweet spot, with excellent battery life, robust codecs and the versatility to get external RAW video (rather limited in codecs and options, but nevertheless, RAW video), 4 channels of audio with DMW-XLR1, amazing IBIS and the excellent color profiles (V-Log and Cine D2, especially)

While it's essential to consider various factors when choosing a camera system, such as image quality, ergonomics, lens selection, and overall performance, the cost-effectiveness of Lumix cameras certainly makes them an attractive option for many photographers and videographers.
It's important to remember that each camera brand has its own strengths and weaknesses, and the choice ultimately depends on individual preferences and specific needs. For me it's cleary the brand itself. Love the community, the cameras, the lenses (SIGMA aswell ofc, they still send me thank you cards for each lense I purchase). It's the little details of the system itself, and L-Mount being the big guy sooner or later (Blackmagic :D)

The panasonic s5iix is near perfect with rolling shutter being the only thing that is truly holding it back and unfortunately that is a dealbreaker for many narrative filmmakers including me.

I am surprised about that too. I switched from the Canon R6 to the S5 about a year ago and it was the best decision I could make. The dynamic range of V-Log compared to C-Log3 makes such a huge difference. And the thing with the limited lens variety just feels like an excuse, that mainly sony users use. There are more than enough lenses for L-Mount to work professional photo and video work and you can adapt to almost any dslr lens and to pl. Nealy no other hybrid/mirrorless camera has so many video-features packed into in this price range.
I would even say, that there is no better mirrorless camera right now than the Lumix S5IIX if you don´t need more than 6K or 60FPS in 4K. But these two requirements are very specific in just some small niches of the videography world.

Absolutely on point. As a video first guy, I've flicked between Sony and Panasonic for years. I sold my GH5 to move to a Sony a7s III. It is a phenomenal camera, and Ill keep it purely for the 4K120P 10-bit, however Sony after sales is infuriating. I also have the Sony 35mm GM f/1.4 which is one of the best 35s to exist on any platform with exception of the focus breathing. No drama, Sony added focus breathing compensation to the a7iv and thought it'd be just a matter of time to make it to the a7s III. To this day, the a7s III and the A1, the crowns jewels of the Sony hybrid stable do not have this feature added to firmware. Even the cheap ZV-E1 made for vlogging has it, as does thr A7RV which isn't even a video centric camera. Those of us who've thrown down the most money though are just out to pasture it seems. What a joke.
Anyway, of recent I've been wanting a B cam capable of doing 6k downsampling to 4k, but didn't want to spend a load of cash. Sony a7 III does a 6k downsamoked image, but only in 8-bit (even on hdmi out). The a7 iv does 6k downsampling and is 10-bit, but way over budget.
I was able to pick up a used S1 for only $1300AUD (about £665). It does everything I want from the a7 iv and lots more for me as a video guy. Now Panasonic seem to have have finally conceded the PDAF wars, if they were to put out a FF camera with equal frame rate options to the a7s III, there is a real good chance I'd be selling up my Sony gear to came back to Panasonic.
