The Last Blockbuster is Lame! - Hack The Movies

- Tony with Newt and Crystal review The Last Blockbuster. In this Podcast / Movie Review of This documentary they'll talk about all the things that make it lame. Like the constant cutting to celebrities, the way its horribly structured, and how everyone its really just one big advertisement for Blockbuster merch.
The documentary tells the story of Blockbuster Video, a video rental business. The documentary explores how the video rental company put independent video rental stores out of business by striking deals with film studios. These deals, known as revenue-share deals, allowed Blockbuster to negotiate lower price than their local counterparts in exchange for a cut of the rental fees. Eventually the Blockbuster brand would crumble only leaving one store left in Bend, Oregon.

Last Week Tonight is awesome. Youre wrong
@@yourbigheadcousin5434 It isn't though...
Newt is that one friend who tells a bunch of stories that he’s been through but no one really believes.
Or cares
And who laughs WAY to hard at his own jokes
Same with that nerd crystal!
Or the geek Tony
As a kid I asked my dad what was in the "movies for mom and dad" section and he said, "Movies so scary it will turn you stiff."
It took years for me to get that joke.
The edgy dad joke. One of the rarest forms of dad jokes, but always welcome.
ur dads a legend
Does anyone else find it funny that this is a 76min video that has endless name drops complaining about an 88min movie that name drops. So meta.
I thought that myself, but it takes 20 minutes or so before they even get to the movie.
@@danielstack4158 That's even worse.
That's what this show is...
There show is like this every week, I always fast forward to the movie parts
Did they even talk abort the movie?
When me and my bros were kids we'd always dare each other to run into the adult section real quick then run out. Anytime one of us came back out we'd always be like; "bro what did you see!!". So it became a thing of running in and trying to take as many mental pics as possible in like 2 seconds, then running back out and relaying what we saw. We were scientists conducting science.
I'm glad Tonys co-hosts are always people he's comfortable with so the review just flows along. All the going off track and joking around reminds me of hanging out with real friends
I need an episode of just Tony, Newt, Johanna, & Crystal telling stories.
I agree anyone else
Yesss. Also my idea too.
"Hack the Memories"
Agreed
@@twerktospec shhhh don't tell anyone!
“30 year old bearded white dudes that probably rented space jam to be ironic and bought ipa’s afterwards”
That is basically what Bend, Oregon is like tbh
My mom and dad owned our town's first video store from 1980-1991 (yeah, my local mom & pops store was literally my mom & pop's). The "movies for mom and dad" section at their store was a pair of blue 3-inch 3-ring binders sitting on the front counter, which had flyers and sale sheets for each of the adult titles and when someone found a movie they wanted, they'd just point to its flyer and someone would go to the back and get the movie for them.
Drinking game:
Take a shot every time Newt says: "I'll never forget."
I will forget because I'll be drinking so much.
Or “xxxxxxx used to be good/funny”
Newt and Keeeeiiiiirrraaaaan need to do a show with all their Blockbuster stories. Several podcast episodes or something. Though I'd rather watch videos.
I agree, however I'd like to listen to a podcast of them telling Blockbuster stories. While I'm driving on the road.
I'm so glad this is here to fill the rental reviews shaped hole in my heart
Me too
For sure
Hi, I’m Jimmy!
Newt never runs out of funny stories about his life
He is the most interesting b movie actor in the world....
You mean his sociopath stories? "My parents don't talk to me anymore" I wonder why
@@Radb707 because parents are assholes sometimes. Do you just assume all parents are perfect or something? Horrible way of thinking
@@theitfactorjameswheezer2852 why are you upset, did your parents take away your llama o'rama video game?
He's old
Y'all ain't lying! This documentary was a self-indulgent piece of crap. This flick was so forgettable that I was 75% through your review before I realized that I had already seen the movie and not just the trailer for it.
I didnt know Lloyd Kaufman by name until yall said "Troma". I used to watch all of those Troma movies on the USA Network late at night.
We need more Newt's Blockbuster stories.
i dont know. a lot of comments are saying its getting old. so may scale them back
@@newtonwallen3210 clearly you are reading the wrong comments Newt. You should start telling them out of spite.
Man this show is just straight up comfort food at this point. Such great guests and topics. You should all be proud of yourselfs.
I love the dynamic you three have so much lol. You guys all have such great energy.
I used to work at Blockbuster and I'll forever have their promo song stuck in my head as a result! *"When the day is done, the night's still young. The show is about to begin. We've got everything here, I'm telling you we're gonna spend the night out in. Ooo, alright... Make it a Blockbuster night."* Tiny correction, I know a Blockbuster that *did* have a movies for Mom and Dad section. 😲
Born in 93. My first regular video store was a Movie Scene, with a space harrier arcade machine in the back, a popcorn machine near the exit, and a whole lot of good memories.
I always went to a local mom and pop shop with my dad. They had a gumball machine were if you got the one that was wrapped meant you got a free game or video of your choice along with what you rented. They even had deals on weekends for rent one get one free. Why would I ever go to Blockbuster? lol God I miss video stores.
More Crystal episodes nice, when are we going to see Kieran (sorry if I butchered the spelling) I miss him from the rental review days. I'd love to see you Kieran and Justin together in an episode again.
Same here Id loved that too having them all together.
He's in soviet Russia shovelling dirt. Dont ask where he got the time machine.
You can only see his video with a vpn as it taken down
You got your wish
TONY!! I just figured it out.. Your schedule mimics Monday Night Raw & Thursday Night Smackdown!
That is some class!
Attitude era schedule. Awesome
One of my first video store experiences was a pharmacy near my grandparents' house where you either told them what movie you wanted or you handed them the empty cover off the shelf and they gave it to you in a clear case if they had it-with both an actual video store and a Blockbuster nearby too. There was a store one town over from where we lived too when we first moved there, so that technically is the first experienced then in that case. The Blockbuster in the same town as the locally-owned one eventually was the only one left though and it was a regular stop on weekends for quite a while with us. Haha.
I used to work at a video store called Hastings. It lasted longer than Blockbuster. It was a video store, and bookstore, and music, and cool stuff. I was the video manager. We had movies that blockbuster wouldn't sale. We did have a small adult section. It was about 2 shelves of movies not behind a door. It was next to the musicals. I swear it was only kept around because one customer would buy 200 to 300 dollars in porn movies and porn magazines every Sunday. It was gross. It got to the point that managers would only check him out. Because of the stuff he would say while paying.
I loved Hastings
I had both mom and pop stores and blockbuster nere by me. i loved them both. my blockbuster had a great horror section and exposed me to so many classics. Suspiria, Cannibal Holocaust, The Beyond, Faces of Death series etc. I also never returned Clayfighter 63 1/3 for N64 from them and it's one of the most expensive games that I own now. so only positive vibes from Blockbuster.
But if you never returned it, can you say you "own" it??
@@KombatGod yes because the store no longer exists
You found your magic crew, Tony. Newt and Crystal are perfect. We don't need anyone else.

My best friend (Gary Wilson) who passed away a few years ago owned our local video store called birtley video shop and then a chain called global video pushed him into running a mobile rental out of his car then global got pushed out by blockbuster which I thought was poetic and now we have none, I would love to open a shop now in Gary's name, R. I. P Gary, I miss you
Sorry about that ❤️
@@Crystalquin thank you, he was a good man, it happened so fast, he had a blood clot in his leg and died before he hit the floor, I'm just so glad he didn't suffer
That recitation of Smashmoth lyrics was hilarious. I can see why that was cause for uproarious laughter...
I like that this show eventually became talk about tapes instead of Newt tells stories forever.
Tony is dead on with these comedians, they all took courses in how to be as cringe as possible
Shout out to “the Loft Cinema” in Tucson
The video store newt was referring to is “Casa video “ it costs 6 dollars to rent a DVD and to account for the decline of patrons it doubles as a craft beer bar
yes
Always love Newt and Crystal as guests, but Newt! I was in EIGHTH GRADE in 1993! I’m old, not you! LMAO!!! And I keep searching “Alien 3” in the UA-cam search...
Blockbuster was always terrible. As soon as a Hollywood video opened up near us we never went back to blockbuster.
People are confusing corporate blockbuster with old school physical media and video rentals.
Dude, is that Len Kabasinski's Swamp Zombies 2 on your shelf there?!? I LOVE THAT MOVIE!
well I did write and produce that cinematic masterpiece
My sister ran one of our Blockbusters before it shut down. It was easily one of her favourite jobs. Much like Newt, she has stories. So many stories.
We still have a rental place. It's a convenience store that sells tons of popcorn with a movie section at the back of the store.
… where are you? I travel as much as I can and I would absolutely love to drop in :)
Newt can you link to the video that you are talking about around the 40:50 mark of the video?
I found his channel just fine, but I wanted to watch the video you are referring to.
if you go to the nasties reviews playlist I believe its the last 2. Its been a while. I really love this dudes video essays
Wasn’t to lame just underwhelming but I loved the old blockbuster commercials and old blockbuster stuff. Cheers to the woman tho that still operates that last blockbuster
I wasn't surprised by the Target visit moment in the doc. I worked at a mom and pop video store in the late 00s. they sent me half the new release inventory for my first week there, they told me to hit local retailers for the rest. I laughed hysterically and quit.
I’ve been looking forward to this review for a few days now. Enjoying it very much thus far. But brahhh Roadhouse 14 nights in a row tonight. It’s starting to take multiple cocktails to get geared up for it at this point!
At one point, I had four video store memberships. One of the Mom-and-Pop stores did have good stuff, but another was really crumby. I went to West Coast Video the most in my teens (after moving across town from the cool Mom-and-Pop place).
I grew up in Cherry Hill, NJ and the first Blockbuster came in 1989. It killed all the mom and pop stores, but West Coast Video, Erol’s and even Tower Records by the Mall still rented VHS and Laserdisc. But Blockbuster was the goto for the popular movies cause they always had them in stock.
As a fan of the movie Empire records, it makes me wonder what would the hip 90s hang out be like today? I was also working on a script for a lost boys tv show and I was wondering how to update Max’s video store for modern audiences?
Tony newt and crystal! the dream team!!! Gangsta gangsta!!!

Tony the best tho
IDK, it's hard to beat Mike Matei and MintSalad.
Here in NW Indiana we had Box Office Video. Not sure if it was a chain but we had a few stores around here, at least 5-10 stores. Pretty solid place, they even used to have TG-16 games, but they sold them off after not too long. We eventually got a Blockbuster Video. They were OK.
Video Castle, Video Vault, J&J Video, Rent-a-Flick, Red Giraffe Video is where we went in the mid to late 90s. Blockbuster seemed more expensive
Hollywood Video was a lot cheaper too when they first started and had a more flexible return policy. That's how they got customers.
@@colinj5291 true. Went there until we got that late fee for like 80$ lol
This "documentary" really could have been a 10 minute piece on Vice. It's hard to celebrate the same brand that killed all the mom and pop rental stores before meeting it's ultimate demise but I will say my local Blockbuster in Oxford, MS was the bomb. The front half was a regular ole Blockbuster while the back of the store was full of adult movies, odd horror movies, B, C, D- movies Even people would just put their own badly made home recorded movies on the shelf. You would find the most obscure shit in the back. And also fighting tooth and nail with your parents to get them to rent you N64 games looking at the box art on the shelf on display. Man good times.
Just wanted a quick sample and ended up watching the whole thing. These guys know how to entertain and inform.
Crystal being Crystal lol not a simp just love a girl that keeps up with herself 💁♀️😍. Funny old blockbuster stories Newt lmfao and Tony keep up the great work sir always bringing new content constantly ain't easy.
Thank you!!!!!
Definitely a simp though
When I was a kid I used to go to blockbuster but there was also a place called Shenandoah Video and Tan where you could rent some movies and watch them while on a tanning bed. Very odd concept. Needless to say they weren’t around very long.
I was dating a girl who worked at the clementon west coast video when it went out of business. Got some really good discounts. Couch potatoe in oaklyn was my favorite.
Newt that's not so bad, I got robbed at gunpoint by a guy with a "Gun" in a paper sack, and had a real s&w 9mm in my waist ... and I let him take the money and leave. I was 50% sure there was no gun in the paper sack ... but I wasn't going to risk possibly getting shot for money that wasn't mine.
makes sense
Newt’s blockbuster stories should be a Patreon video.
“Do you have any idea how long ago 2001 was?”
“Yah, it was 10 years ago”
Lmfao.
You mean 20.oof
@ivan pabon notice the quotations
Newt is a very interesting guy to be honest, his life stories are so amazing
Justin and Crystal and I have had some strange adventures
Love the vibe on this one guys. Really feeling the synergy
Dang, I miss seeing Raid Shadow Legends on the show. D:
I could see Johanna laughing in that situation. Be surprised what comes out in an intense situation like that. An awkward laugh is very believable.
Also I NEED an episode titled “talking about Newts” that’s just Newt stories. Please Señor Tony!
No please- he gets more unlikable each time he says “one of my employees”
If newt was in the fifth grade in 1993 how does he remember 1984?
Wait. Newt used to make out with Crystal?
I'm getting major Jessica Rabbit with Roger Rabbit vibes.
Hahaha yes!!! ❤️
Tony casually says he’s a capitalist. I wish I could do that but it’s so heavily criticized where I live (college town). Props bruh. Competitive market is the way to go.
As soon as Crystal started talking about buy&trade dude showing her the porn section, the 1st thing that came to mind was the baseball card story from Psycho Goreman. lol ps. The mom&pop video stores were superior compared blockbuster, they had variety.
After you watch this Hack the Movies video, please rewind it and place it in the drop box within 5 days from now.
Oh man, it was way to late back than when i realized that in the 18+ Section were all the Games that couldn't be sold openly in Germany,
as Doom, Quake, Return to Castle Wolfenstein and also uncensored Versions of Movies.
Blockbuster's first store opened 1985. My small hometown of Elgin, TX didn't get one until 1998.
Another great talking bout tapes.
Please could you do RED HEAT....it's such a terribly great late 80s action film which I think you guys would have some great thoughts and views on.
16:40 I can’t stop replaying this! XD
All this movie did for me was make me think of the memories I had in the two mom&pop video stores in our town, Sigma Video and Entertainment Tonight. Sigma was the best. Smaller but more of a deep cut selection. E.T. came in and eventually closed Sigma. Then a Family Video moved into Sigma’s building and E.T. closed. Sweet justice.
I'm old enough to still remember video stores. I went to a local down the street store called VHQ, which was a chain subsidiary of movie gallery, which is a subsidiary of Hollywood video. And in 2009 it shut down. There was a Rogers video a couple blocks up from there. That shut in 2010. I never really went to blockbuster because it was really out of the way. I got a free copy of the Wii Up game, due to VHQ closing.
I could listen to Newt talk messed up stories all day
oh dont worry i have plenty more
5:46 whoa, I remember going to west coast video in Miami Beach all the time as a kid. I have fond memories of loitering and reading the backs of vhs boxes.
I worked at an independent video rental store and in my town we outlived Blockbuster by years. We were going til 2014.
After filming a scene at my farmhouse. I cant wait for the movie "Killroy was here" directed by Kevin Smith
I don't understand how can someone think that the Mandalorian is bad. I mean, what are the criteria, it doesn't make sense to compare it with the phantom menace, there is something really wrong there.
If you’re ever in Asheville, NC you should check out Orbit DVD I used to get all my vhs tapes there for .25c a piece. They had a good selection of more obscure dvds and blue rays for rental. They also sold vintage video game stuff, but it seems they priced it by checking eBay listings. Very overpriced.
My local mom and pop show had the best selection of movies. They had everything obscure you could possibly imagine. My friend had a fake ID so we would rent movies like Tracey of Death when were were 15 years old. Tracey of Death makes the Faces of Death movies look like Disney movies.
Good day. I am fascinated and intrigued!!! I love the sarcasm and criticism. I mean constructive criticism and sarcasm... Lol!!! Anyways, I was the abiding blockbuster customer, but I witnessed and experienced several weird stories in blockbuster in the US and Mexico...Yes, I lived in the border of US and Mexico. So, I had the border-blockbuster experience. Lol!!! Anyhow, I agree with you that is a novelty place with a novelty documentary, period. However, I prefer to see the positives and negatives of blockbuster stories from employees, customers, and the corporate executives admitting their business errors.... With these comments in mind, I like your honest and direct humor... I mean good demeanor humor. Excellent, keep it up!!!!
I would love to see a video discussing the Mandolorian because I an genuinely curious as of Tony’s opnions
You are my TV show after work. You guys got it.
Watching this reminds me how much I miss Cinnemassacre rental reviews.
Argh, you really need to review some quality movies like: Terrorvision, Fritz the Cat, Ghoulies, Krull, or maybe Alien 3? I remember being first introduced to Fritz the Cat when I was 7. It was at the first Ma and Pa video store we went to in the 80's, it was right next to Felix the Cat in the Animated section... I learned quite a lot from that movie, one thing I can post here is that Chapstick is not a recommended birth control method for animated cats... Just thought I'd pass that nugget of information along, Newt might need it someday.
Also LMFAO @NEWT for getting you Crystal with the but if you wanna make a little extra money 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣!!
I remember when I was a kid in the 90s there was a video store a few blocks from my house in California called video land. All the sections inside the store were actually themed. So if you wanted to get a horror movie you walked into this spooky looking haunted house that was covered in spiderwebs and had creepy sounds playing inside of it. If you wanted an adventure movie you had to walk into a cave and if you want to drama they had this area with a big theater marquee above it that you had to walk through. sadly Hollywood video took it over and then eventually block buster. They ripped out all the cool set pieces and turn it into a boring ass place right before.
This sounds amazing and it always makes me think of the Louis ck bit on opie and Anthony about supporting local businesses when I hear stories like this.
Dang, Crystal looks good with glasses. Just saying. Commence people yelling SIMP at me.
Hahaha thank you!! 🤓🤓🤓
I worked at Hollywood Video in HS. We used to give free rentals if someone gave us their Blockbuster membership card to cut up
Yeah I used to sneak into that section when I was 16 all the time, mean also just went into actual adult stores before I was legally supposed to lol.
After rewatching this last night, when Newt told his RadioShack story, I had no idea he was a Dov Davidoff fan.
I'm late to the party, can anyone tell me why newt's parents are not talking to him?
Was just curious.
Don't kid yourself Crystal, you are even hotter with the glasses... just kidding around, Love the show. You guys are hilarious and have a great dynamic together. I loved the off the rails review of TMNT. It was truly priceless. This is my go to channel when I feel down. Thank you for all of hard work Tony & Cast
maybe i should try glasses and see if it makes me hotter
Love that Newt quoted Dov Davidoff with crazy person story and the envelope.
Ha. I watched and thought it was almost over and there was 40ish minutes left also. The difference, I shut it off. Thanks for the much better recap.
You forgot to mention the blockbuster express kiosks. They were always outside shady gas stations in my city.
The ones that came with coupons for methols and rolling papers?
they did mention them somewhere near the middle. But Blockbuster didnt own those machines they licensed the name to NCR who sold them over to Redbox later
*Eyebrows - "This is so interesting"*
*Eyes - "I'm so high"*
As a kid I would always prefer to go to the Mom and Pop Shop rental store. Maybe that's just where we went because I got a video game and a movie for the weekend for $2.25... idk
I used to go to Video Powerstore/Update, Hollywood Video and Blockbuster in Phoenix. Video Update had a better selection and a... naughty section. But you could also rent games and movies from grocery stores back then. I have no particular fondness for Blockbuster.
As a fellow New Jersey native - this warmed the cockles of my heart
crystal and i are garden staters to the core
@@newtonwallen3210 yeah man! The discussions on this particular episode of rental stores and the like reminded me so much of stories my dad used to tell. He used to manage a number of theaters in NY, NJ, and PA. Many years ago he bumped into Bill Murray on the way into a pre-production meeting for Ghostbusters 2. My dad said, oh I didn't know they were making a second one, to which BM responded..."Neither did I."
Why isn’t there a Prognosis Negative VHS?
My blockbuster had a raffle set up for 3 movies and a bunch of candy so I filled out like 100 slips and stuffed the ballet box and won. I somehow convinced them to let me pick 3 video games instead. It was a big(rigged) win for me in those days.
