I appreciate that they made another "budget" microphone it feels like a nice sweet spot between the RodeVideoNTG and the original Rode Go you tested it against in this video.
I really like the new form factor Rode is going with. I have the VideoMic NTG and hope it gets all the software compatibilities that the new mics are getting for live USB streaming.
Amazing - two years ago I had heard of Rode but didn't have anything they made. Now we have Rode PodMics, a Wireless Go II set-up and just bought this mic. They are really at the forefront of coming out with products that make today's content creation both possible and enjoyable. Thank you for this solid review.
Excellent demonstration of these new mics, Caleb! The raw audio also just further compliments the processing of your main audio quality. It would be interesting to hear your processing of the VideoMic Go II to match similar to your overhead mic you're using - I feel like it would perform very well given it's size and price! One question I do have though; do the adjustments you make via USB "stick" with the mic when later connected to the camera? Just wondering if the pad/high pass etc. can be enabled externally and it's just a case that they lack the physical space for the buttons. I'm gonna assume no, but would be great if it could be set via the app...
Great question. Input Level and headphone monitoring do not transfer to camera use. Those two settings are only applicable when using the mic over USB. Everything else sticks!
@@dslrvideoshooter I agree, Can you do a comparison between your main mic used in this video and the VideoMicGo 2 fully processed? What do you use for your main microphone?
Thank you for the video! Just saw it on Amazon ES and I wanted to know where it stood compared to the VideoMicro, and it is SO MUCH better, warmer and fuller voice
Seems like a super solid mic. I’m currently using the Diety D3 Pro and very happy with it, but this might be a good backup mic or a second mic for the rare occasion that I need it. Thanks for sharing man! 🎤🤙🏽
The Senheiser MKE400 v2 does all of this (except the app) plus has a real built in wind blimp (and furry cover too). Its 200 bucks though. Just offering another great small mic I don't see much about. They're really great sound for their size, I have 3 of them (1 for each camera) for scratch audio and run and gun setups.
5:43 why did moving the direct monitor volume change the recording volume over usb? That should just change the head phone volume, or was that done in editing?
I saw a couple videos by "Cameras Mics Vlogging" showing a lot of distortion on videomic Go II and that concerns me. Increase youtuve speed to 1.5 at 6:17-6:23 to acentuate, but it sounds bad there when you move mic around.
I have been struggling with crappy built in and and cheap clip on mics, and decided to try out this mic because of your very detailed video. Is working very well for me so far. Connecting via usb c to c. Thanks! Gave your video a like and share.
Christmas has already passed, Caleb. I can't add anything more to my list😩 Ugh, I want this so bad now after watching your vid. I love how in-depth you get with these reviews
As always Caleb an excellent covering of the product. I have so many mics here that I am not in the market for one but STILL will watch your entire walkthrough. Thank you.
Thanks for the video! I picked it up after your video and the demonstration you made (using your link of course) hoping now my sound for my yt videos will be a bit clearer and with less noise. Thanks for the recommendation! 🙏🏻
I'm so glad I watched this, was going to drop a bunch of money on a new mic, but realized I could use this guy for my boom pole setup instead too. Thanks!
Your main mic sounds so good that I couldn't even consider giving a try with this mic. It's day and night. I will have to watch your video talking about microphone to see what's the best alternative.
Thanks Caleb. Finally a good mic I can afford and have a professional’ word on it’s quality. (You are the professional just in case you were wondering)
Caleb!!! I am casting the audio from my phone to a Google nest mini and the audio compression and obviously with the UA-cam compression as well, got to say whoa. Your voice pitch even was effected. I would say this is a beautiful share and insight. You can get a real wild difference. That micro. Tooooo narrow. Wow.
The black discs shown at 0:46 are STUCK. And in the lowest position so I can't even attach it to my camera... I have ripped the callus' off my fingers trying to spin one/both in either direction and they won't budge :( help?
Seems like a great new mic. I’m a bit disappointed that you didn’t compare this to the Rode Videomic NTG, though. It may not be in the same price range, but neither is the Videomicro and its definitely the most similar product in the Rode line of camera-top mics. Otherwise, great video. I’m not a hater. I’m a long time subscriber and fan. Just had to point out what I consider to be a real oversight.
Rode VideoMic GO II is compatible with Rode Connect, the application is quite easy for sound monitoring, effects and there is sound pads bank switcher.
Thank you. I just ordered one. I like the USB-C port which allows for so many uses. Wish it had the furry wind shield and the smartphone adapter, but that is not a deal breaker for me.
FINALLY!!! I was waiting for so long for this cheap alternatives... Everybody's asking me about a beginner microphone and in my country, the currency is like doubled dollars, so if something is 100 USD, its 200 here, anyway... The Rode VMP+ is 550 BGN and its so freaking expensive for the majority of people... With this Mic, my IG DMs can finally rest in peace! Thank you for the amazing review!
When you talk about sensitivity I’m guessing you’re talking about the output level? How does this compare to the NTG? I imagine you can alter the sensitivity with the gain control but what gain would you have to set the NTG at in order for it to match the GO2?
if you had to, like really HAD To judge it against your Big Microphone Shootout how would it rank against your MKH 416? Would it even make the cut of your final 3 microphones?
How much sound pressure can this new mic handle?? I had to send the Rode videomic NTG back because it couldn't handle loud sounds as good as my Rode videomic pro +.
I just realized how much easier having the output go to the mic for streaming! Getting desktop audio in stream labs is annoying on Mac. I just got this mic. According to the tutorial, it will work, but we’ll see
I'm trying to replace my Deity V-Mic D3 Pro - I'm *constantly* dealing with interference with that mic whether I'm using it to vlog on my EOS R or using it with the Deity XLR adapter on my Tascam DR60D MkII or my C300 MkII. I've tried every TRS and TRSS cable (including Deity's) and it seems to always have prominent background interference. I wonder how this mic fares when paired with Rode's 3.5mm TRS/XLR adapter and a camera or field recorder with XLR inputs. I want to use this mic in my live-streaming setup that includes my C300 MkII.... Great vid, Caleb!
This is way off topic, but I was wondering if you could do a video that explains any tips for shooting video of a TFT or LED screen without the flicker. I have tried multiple FPS settings, but just cannot get the hang of it.
My big question is, how's the isolation? I'm in the market for shotgun mics for my channel because our set up has three of us on the couch together and we desperately need mics that can pick us up with good quality AND isolate us so that we aren't picked up on each other's mics. We're currently using Blue Yetis, and with some mixing tricks, I can eliminate most of the bleed-over, but not all of it. If the GO II can cut out the bleed, it's an instant buy for me!
I have the Tascam DR100 mkIII, my plan was to buy the audiotechnica AT875R. Which mic do you recomend? I would like to record dialogs (mostly interior) and sound effects. Thank you!!
Thank you for the overview Caleb! Would have loved a comparison with the Rode VideoMic NTG and Deity D4 Pro to understand how far we are from those in quality and usability, rather than just the micro mics.. any opinions on how this would compare to the NTG?
Any idea how well this mic would record an acoustic guitar? How about an electric guitar? I’d love to hear acoustic samples just with the mic and from an amp with both acoustic and electric guitars. Thanks!
Great video mate! The fact you said you wanna use one for gaming is the EXACT reason I wanna get one for game console streaming. Could you PLEASE DO A GAMING/STREAMING SETUP VIDEO for the noobs (me) lol def need a step by step video on how you would put this together.! My setup is the M1 Mac mini, Xbox series X, Sony zv-e10 and a Elgato facecam jus got all the pieces but now I wanna add this rode mic to the mix! 🙏🏼 thanks man!
To be honest, I did not notice a difference in sound between the Deity D4 Mini and the Rode VideoMicro. There is a tiny, barely perceptible difference in Go II. But it is so insignificant that it can be neglected, especially considering the price and package bundle, because the package includes a windscreen and an additional cable for a smartphone, which costs $14 separately.
nice I currently have h1 zoom mic. I must upgrade because it is breaking. which should I upgrade too? the deity mini or rode go 2. I am new to audio. which is best for all purpose mic to go for shooting random videos and occasional podcasts?
The most comprehensive, yet uncomplicated, reviews and comparisons are always on this channel. Thanks Caleb.
I appreciate that they made another "budget" microphone it feels like a nice sweet spot between the RodeVideoNTG and the original Rode Go you tested it against in this video.
Woah! The audio is insanely clear! I was just about to buy a new shotgun mic a few weeks ago! Glad I waited!
I really like the new form factor Rode is going with. I have the VideoMic NTG and hope it gets all the software compatibilities that the new mics are getting for live USB streaming.
Many of the things this mic has in software, the VidoMic NTG has buttons for on the mic body itself. High-pass, high-boost, 20db pad, for example
@@BloodShotMovies Yes, and I prefer to have the buttons.
All of the software adjustments go away once connected to a camera, only works when connected to a computer or mobile device.
Why you gotta do me like that, Caleb? 😜💜
Had the get the GOAT in there!
I would love to hear how this compares to the VideoMic NTG.

Great review!
Smallrig has a mic called the Forevala S20.
It's a budget microphone with a lavalier mic and no-one seems to be talking about it!
Interesting... Had not heard of that one. Maybe I will!
It Forevala is crap don't buy it, just buy the Rode seriously

Just got this mic 2 days back and it’s phenomenal!! This video and another helped me make the decision to grab it. 🎤💯
the VideoMic GO II is perfect for the mobile vlogging/ filmography setup. as well as minimalist setup for example the sony ZV-E10 or A7C
Seems like a super solid mic. I’m currently using the Diety D3 Pro and very happy with it, but this might be a good backup mic or a second mic for the rare occasion that I need it. Thanks for sharing man! 🎤🤙🏽
I'd love to see a comparison between this new mic from Rode and the two D3 mics from Deity
Thank you for watching boss! So many choices these days! D3 Pro is still a great mic.
I can’t hear you are you sure the mic you’re using is working?
The Senheiser MKE400 v2 does all of this (except the app) plus has a real built in wind blimp (and furry cover too). Its 200 bucks though. Just offering another great small mic I don't see much about.

Caleb! Your nominal excellence is seen onscreen! Thanks for this very helpful vid piece. So appreciated. 💛🙏🏼
Thank you!
What mic did you use in this video? And did add sound effects in post production?
@@martiniustollin so super pro expensiveo one haha clean though.
Damn this thing looks pretty sweet!
it sure does
Greetings from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. You always give practical and very good examples. Keep up the good work!

GOTTA WATCH IT IMMEDIATELY!

An EXCELLENT review, as always :)
Their new integrations with their software is really making them a better option than many competitors... damn.
Another thoughtfully developed video Caleb. I really enjoy the format and presentation, thank you so much for great content.
Christmas has already passed, Caleb. I can't add anything more to my list😩 Ugh, I want this so bad now after watching your vid. I love how in-depth you get with these reviews
Fantastic review. Thanks for all the detail!!
As always Caleb an excellent covering of the product. I have so many mics here that I am not in the market for one but STILL will watch your entire walkthrough. Thank you.
Was wondering how it compares to the Rode Videomic NTG!
same! I have the video micro and was planning to eventually upgrade to the NTG, but I'm curious if this might be an option
Wondering the same thing!
TLDR Filmmaker made that comparison. It's not really fair considering the price difference but yeah I had the same thought
Same..
Comparing them at the moment as well for another use case - will let you know
I needed to upgrade from the 1st gen. You just gave me a reason to make that purchasing decision. Great review!!!
Wonder if the sound is better than my shure lens hopper. The battery is annoying but it’s never let me down.
Thanks for the video! I picked it up after your video and the demonstration you made (using your link of course) hoping now my sound for my yt videos will be a bit clearer and with less noise. Thanks for the recommendation! 🙏🏻
Awesome video, thanks. Can it record audio with a usb C to usb C cable? I have a microsoft surface which has no usb A ports.
This convinced me to try one out: ordered just now. Hoping it will be a solid low-budget option for actors’ auditions / selftapes.
I'm so glad I watched this, was going to drop a bunch of money on a new mic, but realized I could use this guy for my boom pole setup instead too. Thanks!
You just sold me on this mic. Rode should thank you
Your main mic sounds so good that I couldn't even consider giving a try with this mic. It's day and night. I will have to watch your video talking about microphone to see what's the best alternative.
I'm currently unemployed and I'm trying to hustle so I can afford this one!!!
Thanks for reviewing it!!!
Haha love the perfectly timed pause on Gerald’s video. Nice review thanks!
Thanks Caleb. Finally a good mic I can afford and have a professional’ word on it’s quality. (You are the professional just in case you were wondering)
Very happy that it is still made in AU 😎
I love these videos

Ugh, didn’t need another mic but here I am.
You ALWAYS need another mic! HAHA!
The real winner from this video was that you taught me I could OPTION click the Sound tray icon to quickly set my input device. Thanks!
Thanks for such a great video, man. Very informative and honest. Plus, video production is just next level. 🔥
The black discs shown at 0:46 are STUCK. And in the lowest position so I can't even attach it to my camera... I have ripped the callus' off my fingers trying to spin one/both in either direction and they won't budge :( help?
Rode was absolutely thinking of me when they made this microphone. So much bang for the buck! 🧨
There was no USB C-USB A cable in the box, just noticed in your video. But thanks for recommendation. Witt try it tonight!
Yeah, I am pretty sure he is wrong on this detail.
Thank god they upgraded it, I was having problems with the first Rode Videomic Go and had to buy the Videomicro. But I'll give this new one a shot!
Looks like a decent product. Thanks for making this video, Caleb. Have a great day!

Always great content
I brought one its surprisingly nice .. nice review
Quality sound + small form factor = Buy!

Hooked on your equipment reviews this evening, but I also must know where you picked up that awesome shirt! 🙂
Nice demo and revue, thanks!! But it’s not a RODE Wireless Go 2….. did no-one else pick that up? It looks like a great mic though… thanks again.
How much sound pressure can this new mic handle?? I had to send the Rode videomic NTG back because it couldn't handle loud sounds as good as my Rode videomic pro +.
Best Rode VideoMic GO II video!
Awesome video! Thanks. Just bought this and was worried about it's audio quality.

Hi. Will go 2 suitable for unboxing video let says approx 1 meter away. Pairing with Fuji XH1 and possible outdoor too. Thanks 🙏🙏🙏
I have the deity and it's great. Would you recommend upgrading to this Rode instead?

Great review, Caleb! ;)
What vlogging lens(es) are you using for the stationary shot and the handheld arms length shot? Love the look!
For a starter boom mic would you consider this or go all out with the Video Mic NTG or Video Mic Pro Plus?
My favorites right now from Rode at the VideoMic NTG and VideoMic GO II. Next jump up would be the Sennheiser MKE600 and MKH-416.
I have the Tascam DR100 mkIII, my plan was to buy the audiotechnica AT875R. Which mic do you recomend? I would like to record dialogs (mostly interior) and sound effects. Thank you!!
I love my VMNTG, cant wait to hear a comparison.
Definitely going to try one of these to see how they sound on indoor narrative dialogue 👌
Now I'm not sure if I should return my deity D4 duo and buy good or not? There's so many good options out there now!!
Thanks! I think I will be picking one of these up.
Man. This thing looks awesome. I do love Rode products.
Hope Rode pushes an update for the NTG Video Mic to use the Rode Central App, because I mainly bought it because it can be a USB mic and Camera Mic
Love your work - What microphone are you using in this video? You sound amazing!

While not on the same price range, if you could choose between this one or the DJI mic? Mostly for vlogging.
Quite an informative review, I currently own and use the Rode Video Micro with my Sony A6300.
Love this video as I always do!!
Just wondering how to connect two of these mics to a Mac? Cheers Ron
Very helpful, thanks for sharing 👍

Your main mic sounds significantly better than any of those mics. Perhaps even 10 times better :)
What does it sound like compared to the Deity D3. I think that is it’s competitor.
great review !
How would this mic perform when recording bands in concert? Can it handle the volume?

Just got one. It says you can use it for ipone and iPad but I cannot figure out how to make it work and there are no tutorials anywhere, any ideas?
Between this Rode and the NT5, which would be best to use on camera in a medium-sized RV for table top talking head videos?
