I notice that most of these etiquette rules, not just in dining but in general, actually are practical and not just something to follow to be “proper”. For examples, waving the fork and knife in the air would pose a hazard, putting the utensils back on the mat would be unsanitary, bending down too low can hurt your back (and also would be dangerous if you get too close to the food especially if it’s hot), etc. These are pretty much based on maintaining safety and hygiene.

that's because etiquette was first "invented" so that everyone can feel good when interacting with each other; now people use 'not wanting to seem stuck up' as an excuse to not have proper manners, so they end up being rude and crossing over people's boundaries

Too many restaurants I have been to expect you to keep your dirty cutlery, even when you have not one plate nor extra napkins on the table. I try to always hold onto my bread plate for this reason alone. I feel so comfortable and happy when the restaurant staff remove your plates, silverware on top, and either understand or bring a new set without even asking. A lot of people, staff and diners alike, do not know this; they are simply doing what they think is normal. 🥺🌹🍽 And yes, I am very certain this has only happened in America. I often just ask for new silverware if they try to have my keep it, and sometimes that request is met with hesitation. I think I've always been given a new set, though. 😅🌹🍽

I am not well off or wealthy by any means; I am simply middle class. I never go anywhere fancy to eat because of this but I still use your dining etiquette lessons when I am dining. Things I have noticed is that when I practice dining etiquette, even if the common person or waiter doesn’t understand what I’m doing, I look much more feminine and put together and I’ve noticed that doing these things commands more attention from my date and I get better service from my waiters and waitresses. Home training and soft skills truly benefit any woman in any situation

Well said! I was also thinking that if you chew/swallow your food before speaking, drinking or taking another bite, you will be eating slower and probably getting fuller faster by using proper etiquette. Therefore, you may not be eating everything on your plate, which is healthier if you're receiving American proportions. I do wonder if it is rude to not finish your meal? Likewise, would it be rude to hold up the rest of your party, while they wait for you to finish your course?
I hope she has videos on what is appropriate attire to wear at various type of venue's such as a 5-star, vs a chain restaurant, for example. I learned table manners growing up but not this in-depth. I was never taught about clothes. In Arizona, as a middle class person, we dress for coolness and comfort and frequent chain restaurants, which often means jeans and t-shirts or a sleevless top of some sort. This is acceptable here due to the heat. Growing up this way, makes me feel dressed way over the top if I wear a nice sundress or skirt and top. I don't even know where to begin. Like you, I would like to feel feminine while I am outside of my home dining or even just running errands. I would love to have the confidence to dress in a proper way to dine at a five star restaurant (not that I would ever find myself in one). If I wore a beautiful dress like her black one, I would feel like I was going to a wedding. I need help. Lol

Jamila, I would like to know how to gracefully deal with little accidents that happen while dining. For example, when you drop a piece of food, if you drop your napkin or cutlery by accident, if you rip a stocking or whatever clumsy mistakes that could happen. It would be fun to watch and very educational 🤣.

In France, the etiquette says that fork and knife position in the plate also has a meaning.
Crossing them like you did in the video means you have finished and... didn't enjoy your food 😛. Putting them in parallel means you liked it, and putting them perpendicularly means you would like to have the next dish.
Making an A, means you are having a pause

I feel like the latest generation tries to come off as unassuming, authentic and friendly but they have lost the art of many etiquette rules that, when you think about it, are in place for the comfort of everyone at the table - and for your safety clearly. This is a nice reminder, as I myself tend to take heaps of food in my mouth and then blabber on in case I miss out on the conversations being had 🙈

For the people around us, it is fancy. My kids complain about having to learn to be fancy when no one else does it. My husband learned! He recently went to a business celebratory lunch and his friend/boss leaned in and asked my husband what fork he should start with :)
My mom is Mexican but taught me the basic use of fork and knife as a kid (siblings and dad need etiquette classes!) I later learned the rest on my own. When we were dating, my husband’s family gave me the nickname “la duquesa” the duchess because I use a fork and knife lol.

I noticed that the way Hailey eats it’s just more American, whereas the etiquette rules are more how Europeans or British or the French eat. For example, in Europe, you’ll always have the fork on your left side with the tongs facing down and your knife on your right side because a lot of the food that you’re eating there are using both utensils And it makes it easier for cutting each bite instead of switching the utensils over to the other hand like you do in America because typically with American foods, you can eat a lot of stuff with just a fork by itself so it would make sense just to have the fork on your dominant hand.

There is. You eat it with your hands, but you take a bite, then put it down, wipe your face with a napkin… take a drink if you like… repeat as necessary, while conversing and alternating with your side dishes (French fries, salad, etc.).

    Hey Jamila, hope you're amazing.
What I loved most is learning the right way of holding the fork when bringing it into your mouth, and learning how to take a break with the cutlery for talking.
Thank you so much, it's very useful, and I'll put it to practice from now on.

Jamila was eating in the Continental/European dining style. Hailey Bieber was eating in the American dining style. Americans do not eat with fork tongs down. In The United States it would be rare to see anyone eating the way Jamila does.

I am so glad that I have found your UA-cam channel! I wish that etiquette was a more common topic to teach at school to kids. Your videos are easy to understand and so useful, I hope you will reach out 1 million of subscribers soon! People are genuinely surprised about my well manners in social settings, and this is part of your teaching throughout your videos:) so thank you!

In the USA No but really In Europ ppl actually eat a certain way at fancy Dinner, at a normal Dinner you can be more casual but at a nice Dinner everyone Eats with edict. You shouldn’t use your knife as you gesture with your hands - it’s not nice!

Hello Jamila, I admire how you did this video from such a kind place, you didn't at all pick on Mrs. Bieber, who was indeed practically waving her silverware around & talking with her mouth full. Once again you are considerate & classy, demonstrating etiquette in the way you live your life & treat others.

I have old French cutlery, and on much of it from that same period, it is decorated on both sides, but the medallion area is on the back side (where a monogram, crest, etc., would be engraved or added) for all pieces, so you would normally put the forks tines down as you mention, but also the spoons as well. I have some very old American cutlery that is done the same way, but it may have been meant for a French family as it has a Fleur de Lys on it, with the medallion for the monogram or crest on the back side. Lovely video.

Of course, special mention to how quick and fast this video was produced from conceptualisation, to filming, editing and posting here on UA-cam. I also noticed in the first clip the way she held her fork pointing up in her right hand while trying to use her knife with her left hand, it all looked extremely awkward. Loved this video, thanks for sharing your knowledge!
PS: Quick question. I understand that when eating a "bite size" piece of fish or vegetable, it is easy to bring it to your mouth with the fork facing down. However, would it be correct to eat "smaller pieces" food like rice, ground beef, or even mashed potatoes with your fork facing up? What is the etiquette for these foods?
