I retired from an office job in NYC at 60. We bought 20 acres of undeveloped woodland in SW Michigan and started our version of this journey ;) Like you, my weight dropped dramatically with the new way of life. We aren't making our living off of the farm yet, but we're a couple of years behind you ;) It's a real choice that people can make.
Hello: You are living our dream. We live in Michiana and want to do the same as you. We have a few years to go yet, we take care of my 80 year old Mom and have to wait until she passes… Would you mind sharing with us how you found your property and what you had to pay for it? This information would greatly help us to get an idea what we are looking at kind of cost wise… Thank you so much for any help you could provide and if you would rather email it to me I’d be happy to give you my address. We wish you all the best. Have a great day and be blessed.
@@troystutsman1400 I was trained as a real estate paralegal and residential appraiser, so had some special skills related to searching for land. Michigan was our destination because my wife's family is largely here, while mine is scattered all over. I searched the southern tier of Michigan for probably a couple of years before we were ready to move, looking at what was coming to market and the general price picture. We hired a realtor in the area when we were ready to buy. She helped with finding potential homesteads, but the land we ended up with was a listing I found online and asked her to look at. 20 acres, undeveloped woodland. 30k. The seller had bought it planning to build his family's dream home, only to have his wife divorce him. He wanted rid of it and helped with that.
Remember to keep your cover crops and companionship planting. Peas and other legumes can help with putting nitrogen from the atmosphere into the soil. You can also grow daikon radish for your animals to graze and they will fertilize and decompose your soil.
I Have been a customer of Joel and Amy's for a couple years. Their grain finished beef is beyond excellent, not to mention the honey, chicken, etc. They are fantastic people, what they have accomplished out at Fort Rock is unbelievable, a dream come true.
I'm speechless... Thank you YT for serving up my first Paragraphic video. The production quality is so good! Everything from the visuals, audio, cuts, etc., A+. I also couldn't help but love this family; I could watch a whole documentary on just this one farm.
I'm 32 with 2 beautiful baby girls from CA, wife and i moved to a perfect lil property on 3 acres. I'm trying to create exactly what you're doing but on a smaller scale obviously. Love this video and the encouragement it brings. God bless you and your family and am so happy you've found IT in your life
@@Grogu01 just outside of Charlotte, NC. I'm not that knowledgeable on all things homestead so we're close enough to the city to utilize it's pros but far enough away to be away from most of the politics. Look into Appalachia NC or South Carolina
Im with you dude. This is how humans should be. We are missing the critical aspects of who we are. Now a days people are so damn dependent on others to give them food, shelter, health, transportation, education and friends its a recipe for disaster. We are not machines we were meant to be living in harmony with the energy of this earth.
Your the MAN!!! I love this man !!!!! People going back to nature HALLELUJAH PRAISE GOD THAT GOOD FOOD IS GROWN IN USA!!!!!!! Thanks to Farmers like you!!!! Thanks for your work!!!!
I wanted to relocate to another country but with this video i just decided to use my funds to buy a big land to start my own journey of a sustainable life and i am good with my own hands the only problem is my wife she thinks i am going nuts. Nice video waiting for part 2
A cute small house on a beautiful remote homestead, self sufficient and self reliant, disconnected from everything of no importance, they are definitely living the dream of dreams! ♥
I go north country in the spring season and I eat off Amish farms. The farm life is perfect and my last few years will hopefully be on my tree farm living the Dream I was born to live free with My God .
This is a solution to our problems with the greed and power hungry problems. We need to slow down and stop trying to feed the entire world. If we focus on a state by state population and bring back being self efficient. I have so many idea's and keep hoping it will continue to spread. If everyone can raise meat then we shouldn't be letting these greedy companies take that from us. It is so much better for the environment the animals and the land to do things on a smaller scale. Every state can provide for their population and focus on the people. People over profit will balance the greed. Use our tax dollars to teach people how to live off the land. If we as a collective can stop being so greedy and power hungry we can start to heal and fix the damage we have done. Thank you for this video.
There is no better feeling in the world than to wake up at sunrise, on your own land, look out and feel how much God has blessed you. I love being at the ranch, don't make my living from it yet, but that's my goal. I used to be a people person, but people screwed that up. Cows make much better neighbors, but then out here people aren't bad either. If you have high blood pressure, take a trip to the country, stay a while, bet that blood pressure drops.
Im glad you made the change for your health. I wish I could get my father onboard. I’ve been raising chickens for a few years now. My end goal would be to buy land, grow and raise mist of my food. Great video… you are a humble man!
Retiring in a few more years here in central Arkansas on my 35 acres. Watching this video bolsters my resolve to live a similar life to y’all. Grew up on a ranch in Northern California and have yearned for that lifestyle again for years, just haven’t had the time working 50 hours per week.
Quite inspirational! Even the air your breath on a daily base and direct contact with God given nature in place like this is incomparable and cannot be measured in monetary values. Thanks for sharing the blessing you have found!
Thanks for sharing your time with me via internet ...again here from Auckland, New Zealand !!!! Merry Christmas and happy New Year to you and your family !!!
I feel like I am working with a friend that cares about me and what I need. Joel is super knowledgeable and wants to help you get what you need. The beef is great and I am a customer for life.
Very impressive setup and life! These are the type of people that I envy, man they are doing it right! I wish more people would look at a video like this and take in some of it... Even if they just planted a small garden, or had a few hens, it just makes things better!
I am a 29 years old and about to start my international career as a nurse abroad, but i promise my self, one day, i will be living this type of life, buy my own land and build my own farm and a farm house there, be a self sufficient also provide for the community i live in. thank you for your video, it gives me additional motivation to achieve the life that i want in the future.. 🙂
This didn't just happen to you. Congratulations on what your long hrs educating yourself, great planning and hard work have achieved. The well may be luck but my hat is off to your great luck. I look forward to more videos about how you have done this.
The benefits of delayed gratification are something most Americans don't understand. There are plenty of societies in the world that understand it just fine.
OMG ! You literally sound like me. I wake up everyday needing a reason to go to work and have to try not to hate everyone too 😂. We actually have been trying to commit to this for years. Love the video. You might just end up being the reason we take the leap. By the way …. Best quote I’ve ever heard, was “Closest thing to hitting the lottery, was finding property with a good well”. Brother people just don’t get how deep that goes. 😂. No pun intended. The single most important thing in life = WATER 💧
Absolutely loved watching this video very inspiring your dream and vision and what you have achieved is exactly what I am hoping to get to on a smaller scale fantastic job
If I could offer a suggestion. When your pond is finished, stocked and active. You might look into hydroponic farming. This is where the nutrient rich (fish poop) water is pumped into a series of garden beds for plant based food growth. Plants soak up the fish waste and return clean water to be pumped back to the fish farm in a closed system. You get protien, vegetables and circulating water to prevent airborne insect pests.
Thankyou. Very confirmative for me as I have everything set up in Europe ...almost, ready for tractor chickens, a few sheep, etc. ..when Feb comes, it's full steam ahead.
Great Video.....I second the Part 2... I'm retiring in 823 days... I have alot of that knowledge, but this gives me more drive to just get going towards that goal... Thank You..
What a cool way to live your life. I’ve lived in cities all my life and ever since Cove it it’s some thing I just don’t wanna do anymore. I think eventually when I save enough money, I would like to buy a little Homestead myself.
Thanks for this video. You can not believe it when we tell you that I'm about to embark on the exact same journey as you ... Thanks for the inspiration 😅

You could conture the land, collect all that rain and keep that well producing. Love what you've done there.
Delayed gratification, spot on. Think you are doing such the good and right thing!
Just subscribed!
Now THAT is freedom. I cant wait to get there, NEED to get there. Get me out of this rat race...Great Job! This is fantastic
