    We know what you’re thinking - why not give the whole machine a paint job? 🤔 While a fresh coat would look nice, we’re focused on functionality over aesthetics right now. A full machine restoration is on the wish list for the Zayer, but with other projects on the go and while this is earning our business money, we’re prioritizing upgrades that make a real difference 😄 Lesson of the day: Listen to your wife 😂

      If that happened in a plant with lots of employees, you'd be nicknamed 'Wrong Side Kurtis', and have to suffer your work 'mates' shouting 'IT'S THE OTHER SIDE Kurtis' several times a day. I can think of workmates who kept disparaging nicknames for 30 plus years. There some you wouldn't say to their faces, like Black Jack because he would throw a hammer at you, but it was 'character building'.

    This is what sets apart a good operator from an excellent operator! Machine maintenance! Everyone can put grease in a grease fitting, but very few do actually care for the machine in a way that's truly important. Repair broken parts, fix way covers, fix broken Oil lines. It's spending a few hundred bucks to keep an almost unbreakable, very reliable and very expensive machine in service for many more years. THATS what's keeping these beautiful machines alive!

    I love the fact that you've allocated time for shop projects, and that you follow it even if the original thing can't be done. It's nice to have a "break", where you get to do something you enjoy to make your work go smoother. Much love from me and my 45kg dog that's sleeping on my lap like all Friday mornings! ❤

    • @aserta
      @aserta 5 місяців тому +8

      And it's not just about the break, but also putting work into the shop, maintaining it. SO many people fail to do this and the shop just degrades bit by bit along with their productivity. Most of my big machines are taken from such shops, because they couldn't keep up anymore. And all the stories are the same. "Just one too many problems."

    • @josephking6515
      @josephking6515 5 місяців тому +7

    • @thomasswearingen6971
      @thomasswearingen6971 5 місяців тому +3

      There is always something that you wish was just a little bit better. And yes time off is great. The weekend is the best time to do projects and repairs. Unless you have a customer sleeping in your shop waiting for his job to get done. When I watch the rebuild videos it's. This is what we are doing today. Usually it all things that would drive me mad and if I didn't change them to not be dreaded then I believe that I would start to resent the occupation that I love. It's always better to have work look and feel like play then to be something that you have to do.
      I don't think that I have seen a video yet that was not a master playing with his craft. That is to all three of you. Even when Curtis has been so frustrated that he has to take a breath. He gets right back at it and if it wasn't part of the video then one would never know that there was something that didn't work out according to plan. The breath is just stop drop and roll before the fire comes and then the next thing we know the approach is changed and it's like nothing didn't work as planned. You always know that you are with a master that enjoys their craft when they stop and take five before the job ends up in the bin, or every step is so though out that it looks like hay maybe I could do that to and the first and last time I tried to mill something I broke every tool I tried to use and when I welded two parts together they looked like I got hungry and tried to eat them. But you know I think that despite my having two separate parts and not a welded part. I think that I might be able to do that.
      Please remember that work is play and play is work with a deadline. And with no you time or we time. You end up working a job. I hope that you will always be able to never have work be a dreaded job but rather it be something that just is because you orchestrated everything. Meaning it was for no other reason then you were there.

You are being trained that while the three little words are still important, you are to now use two little words at critical moments. From "I love you" to "Yes, Dear". That was a ,"Yes Dear" moment if I ever saw one. Great job!

  • @walter2990

    This video brought back some old memories for me.
    My first "professional" machine shop job, (meaning that I was actually paid), was to clean a 40? yo Turret lathe for my Grandfather's shop. It was about 8 foot wide. That lathe looked as if it had never had a good cleaning, ever. It took me about a week to clean out about 5-6, 5 gallon buckets of really awful grease, coolant residue, and chips. It was back in about1965.
    It's been about 60 years now, and I can still remember the horrible smell of the debris!
    My older brother recently told me that he had worked on that cleaning job as well, but I don't remember him working on it with me, because at that time we didn't get along very well, so I guess we worked on it separately.
    I was about 10-11 yo, but I'd been "working" and learning about machining from him since I was about 6yo. He was a very patient teacher and taught me as if I was much older.
    I became the owner of his machine shop equipment about 40 years later, and I still operate the equipment, but that turret lathe had been sold previously.

    Kurtis, you need to get a job where you use that shaper you have, I've watched a few of those machine shop videos from India, and watching a shaper work is mesmerizing! 😄😄😄

    I just love this channel and try to watch it daily if I can. Being retired I should have all the time in the world, but nope. Seem to have something else all the time. But it is great to get on and actually comment. Just keep up the amazing work Kurtis and Karen, and Homie! Love the channel, love the work. I have so many questions, but don't want to bother you with them all. Keep up the good work!

    SCHEDULING shop maintenance & repair time.. truly professional. So many will only take the time after it breaks. It’s panic time then. Scheduling PM keeps things so much better.
    And aren’t those just the prettiest swarf guards?😊

    Nice, I would just run a chunk of conveyor belting on the end of the table as way covers. You just need to mount a bit of a rounding to the end of the bed so they don't snag on the end of the ways and tear up the belting. If you use belting not just rubber is stiff enough to stay lined up all side to side on its own and will just push its self of the end and pile up on the floor. No springs stretch, no sheet metal to ding, no complicated rubber wipers to wear out. I did this for a old planer mill for the very reason that you then don't have an extension hanging of the end of the table. Also makes cleaning off the ways a breeze as even with covers crap still gets up in there over time.

    Hey you two. We have yet another week gone. First thing that caught my eye was the big lathe in the background all covered up. It tells the tale of respect for your equipment. Keeps people from piling things on it that can damage the ways. The color you use on the guards is perfect. Are you thinking about doing a lot more painting ? Seems you have enough to polish up the whole line up. It will make the whole shop a lot brighter. Something to be really proud of. Great post Kurtis and Karen, You two sure make some great videos. Handy too if you have trouble rembering of on a job like the new crane. Was it here or over there, LOL, There is always a chuckle or two when you two entertain us. THANKS EH !

    Nice job folks! I’ve noticed something: outside of North America, tee-handles are used for small jobs but here in Canada, we would use either a ratchet or a small impact gun on those swarm guard bolts. Not a big deal but an interesting detail.

    It's great to watch you both get stuck into filming another machine upgrade and fixup. The swarf guards look so pretty now Kurtis 😉, and that new readout makes the Zayer look like its ready for another 10,000 hours work. All dressed up and nowhere to go. Karen I love your little giggles and other oohs and ahhhs. Homey and Jeffrey top off a great week. Thanks for the great video. Speaking of the FRANNA ... While driving along the Northern Expressway north of Adelaide several days ago, I saw the familiar profile of a FRANNA Crane plodding along , quite an awesome machine. Yours will be more spectacular when you have finished fully restoring, rebuilding and repainting and with "Cutting Edge Engineering" proudly painted on the main boom. Have a Supercala-Franna-Listic weekend.

    There's a company in the US that specializes in manufacturing way covers. I used to be a machine tool manufacturer's rep and we used them all the time as getting them from Japan or Taiwan was lengthy I can't remember their name but with a little work on the internet, you can figure it out. I've been watching your vids for a couple of years now and I don't miss a one. And I absolutely love 'em.
