Superfans -- thank you for joining us for our On Location episode covering the many wonderful filming locations for Groundhog Day (1993) in Woodstock, Illinois. We are glad you are able to join us on our adventures as fellow film fans. Thanks for watching and please check out our other episodes!
There will NEVER be films made like this anymore, I promise that... The films they produce nowadays are SO BAD, that they make me not want to go on living anymore! 🤮🤮🤮
Spent the first eighteen years of my life in Woodstock. I'm intimately familiar with every square inch of Woodstock, worked at the Theater, the cafe next to the Opera House, bowled in that alley, That was my childhood. Thank you for this video.
When you're flipping through channels, and come across Groundhog Day, you stop and watch it. Doesn't matter if it's half way through. I can only think of a few movies that have that ability.
I grew up in Woodstock. It hasn't changed at all since I was younger. I remember the filming that year . There are plaques and pictures all over the town in the shops and outside. Find the famous alley.... If anyone has a day to kill in the Chicago area, come visit it, they have maps of all the filming locations around town.. Great Job on this Video!!!!!!
Thank you for making such a wonderful documentary. I first rented Groundhog Day back in 1994 only to discover that the last 15 minutes of the tape was garbled. I rented it again a year later from a different movie store but the tape refused to play and automatically ejected. A few years later it was coming on TV so I set the VCR to record but had it in SP instead of LP and the tape ran out. Around 5 years ago, I bought the DVD and finally got to see the end of the movie after 20 years. It was worth the wait.
Hahaha! Wow! That’s some determination. The youth of today will never fully understand what it was like to wait and find a rental (or in your case...a working vhs).
I did not expect to get emotional watching this video. Thanks for a beautiful revisit to a hilarious, surreal, but also very touching and thought-provoking film!
The Movie is realy special to me, i saw it with my Dad in cinema when i was a Kid and it was moslty a comedy movie to me. I watched it 2 Weeks ago and i realy enjoyed it, something about the setting, the city and the atmosphere realy sucks me in every time. You also get the more mature themes of the Movie when you are older. I watched of behind the scenes videos and now this pops up, i cant wait for this Episode.
Outstanding video! I grew up in the neighboring town of Belvedere IL. We were very proud of the fact that Groundhog Day was filmed in Woodstock. Very cool that you did this for the fans.
Yes! Thank you for watching and commenting. The town and area really embraces the movie -- which is awesome! This is why we do what we do: bring the movie feelings to the fans. Please check out our other videos -- more nostalgia and movie fun! Thanks! :)
I cannot say how many times I've watched and enjoyed this movie...and like Groundhog Day, I will again and again and again. Always get a laugh 😂 out of it, and it makes me think about what if...what if you were stuck in time , what would you do with that eternity?
Absolutely Super Fantastic!... This was a real joy, and that was an excellent closing statement. I will definitely visit one day. Take a bow everyone, so you can watch that step lol!
Wow man, Thank you. That was like jumping in a time machine and going back in time. You did a great job but then again all of your episodes have been top notch. Thank you
Great minds think alike! I just filmed my Groundhog Day episode in Woodstock a few days ago for its upcoming Feb. 2nd premiere, such a beautiful town! Cant wait to see what you guys did with it!
Well, that was really the filming location vid to end all others. Amazing! Thanks UA-cam for only taking several years to recommend this channel. A sub and thumbs up earnt for sure.
Thank you so much for not only making this episode but all of your previous episodes as well. I genuinely look forward to when you guys post a new show!
Well, now you have to watch it again :) :) Thanks for watching our video. Please check out our other videos -- more nostalgia and movie fun! Thanks! :)
Yesterday, February 2, I saw the movie ... Again! I was pleased to see your video and get to know that city that is very, very far from me. Beautiful places and people. Thanks and greetings from Buenos Aires, Argentina
At the time of filming, I taught at Waukegan High School. The highway closed by snowstorm scene ("I make the weather") was filmed on the Amstutz expressway (then Waukegan's 1.4 mile highway to nowhere). Some of my students went to watch the filming for lunch and came back proud that by yelling at Bill Murray, he gave them the finger! The Amstutz has been used for a number of movies and TV shows starting with A Wedding (1978) because it was a multi-lane highway that was easily blocked off.It was the first part of a lakefront expressway to Chicago that was never built.
I drove past that area while they were filming to pick my son up for Cub Scouts. Then a few days later I’m going down that stretch of road and I noticed it looked like we just had a winter snowstorm which didn’t make sense to me because it was May or June. I figured it out a little bit later.
Thanks for watching and subbing! We always try to bring the best of these films to our episodes -- their heart and story. Let us know what you think of our other episodes!
Great feature! This (2021), would have been my 4th straight year to visit on GHD except that COVID has intervened. I met Stephen Tobolowsky there several years ago when he was back for a visit and he was warm and genuine. In fact, the whole town of Woodstock really embraces the feel of Groundhog Day. I’ll do it again, and again.......
Great video guys!!! Best one yet!! The interview with Stephen was awesome!! Well done!! This movie holds a special place in my heart since Feb 2nd is my birthday!! So, “Groundhog Day” is watched in my birthday, every year, at a minimum! One of my faves!! Thanks!!
Another great video. A childhood classic. You defiantly have the same mind set as myself when it comes to the films you love. Keep making these great videos. 👍❤️
We did an opera house documentary. Narrated by Bill Curtis. I did all the shots and then edited the entire production in my home studio in Marengo, Illinois. I’m about 20 minutes from Woodstock. My favorite part of filming? That would be the opera house bell tower. Incredible view! Well done on this by the way!
Little-known movie trivia. Harold Ramis first claimed that Phil was stuck in Groundhog day for ten years, ut later upped it to 30 - 40 years counting all his misadventures then counting how long it would take to gain mastery in the skills he displayed like the piano and ice carving.
I actually just watched Groundhog Day last year and I loved it. Such a great film and it was awesome seeing all these locations today in comparison to when the film was released. I especially love that the town and the community really take pride and embrace the film unlike some places *ahem Home Alone house ahem* (jkjk) Awesome video as always!
I never understood why at the B&B there wasn't any cold water when Bill was showering and he asked the lady why and she said something like why or well there wouldn't be any today. Why did she say that?
Wow that was an amazing video. This channel should be getting picked up by a tv channel as it is better produced, fronted and so much funnier than half the crap on TV now. Awesome work it seems you and your team have so much fun making these videos and it shows through the video itself.
Great movie, cannot wait to see it! One of the best! If you guys ever get to Pittsburgh PA could you do Kingpin filming locations. For some reason no one has done that movie yet

We call that the "Shawshank Effect." You've been Shawshanked.
For some reason 'The Fugitive' was always the film i associate doing that with for me.
Groundhog day is absolutely another example, and Shawshank.
Agreed on The Fugitive!
A Few Good Men is one of those on my list..

Stephen is one of those great unsung character actors. It's people like him who make the movies great. Well done production BtB.
Thank you for watching!
Best film in the last 30 yrs., to me.
Top ten movie for me. Always a good one to fall back on.
Amen! Thanks for watching!
It's in my TOP 10 also.
I have a copy of the 2nd draft of the script, and Phil's long hug of Ned WAS in the script - he even gives him a hickey!
Love love love this episode, you guys got so much awesome access, great producing!
Thanks so much for watching! And we appreciate the kind words.

This is my hometown and it's so crazy to me to see so many people love this small town I grew up in!
That's awesome! Woodstock residents are the best. Thanks for watching and joining us back in your hometown!
What a beautiful little town. I love this movie so I would love to visit this place. I live in Ireland though, but who knows maybe some day.
I did not expect to get emotional watching this video. Thanks for a beautiful revisit to a hilarious, surreal, but also very touching and thought-provoking film!
Love it! Thanks so much

I am a Waukegan native... highway to nowhere. Drag race on the Amstutz many times.
Iv been in that square. They have a nice farmers market every weekend during the warmer months.
A wonderful town!
