I've been sitting for an hour watching videos on how to prune my Pinky Winky Hydrangea. This video does the best job of explaining exactly how to pick the cuts. I know to trim out week wood or wood that grows in the wrong direction. But John clearly shows how and why to pick the location of your cut.
Yes! I think experts become so automatic with their cuts they forget they're actually making decisions each time. But we need that process slowed down, explained, & demonstrated several times to actually see the decision-making process re WHERE to cut, & then bring us in very close to watch the actual execution of the cut.
This video did that very well.
I love the paniculata hydrangeas( vanilla strawberry and lime light ) I always mess up my macrophillas . We threw all our endless summers out due to frustration. I will keep watching CTScaper.

I feel confident enough now to prune my hydrangea tree that I bought last summer. I would love to see a video on how to care for winter damage to hybrid tea rose bushes . Illinois got slammed this winter and mine are dead and I don't know what to do or if they will ever recover .....thanks so much :)

This answered by question. It's really pruning not deadheading. I tried deadheading but stems so fragile many break. I'm more comfortable now, inherited this type.
Thanks for your clear and informative video. What should I do with a second little tree that sprouted from very close to the ground? I would love to be able to use it to propagate. It doesn't seem to have its own roots though.

I just found your channel. I am in Canada zone 4 and have a Hydrangea in a north facing bed. I am not afraid to prune but I dont know the species so does it matter? The buds arent breaking yet, and I would lie to cut off at least a foot .It is an established tree/shrub, about 5 ft tall and it did get lots of blooms last yr, I just want to make is shorter so I can see out of my bedroom window.

@ctscaper what do you do when its almost Sept and your Standard Pinky Winky still in pot has turned brown because mosquito spray has landed on it? Do I just leave all of the crusty flowers on until Spring and go ahead and plant or ?? Btw I cant return it
How much more could you prune off this hydrangea? If you wanted/needed could this safely be trimmed down another 12-18inches?
I just got a beautiful pinky winky. It being the beginning of August it's an awkward time to transplant some plants to make room for it where I want it. Can I wait with the shrub in it's 5 gal bucket until fall to transplant? Not sure how to proceed.
Can you post a video on how to prune a Big Leaf Hydrangea? Also I've been told two different things regarding this shrub. One is that you leave the old wood because it will flower on the old wood. But then I was told to remove the old wood because it is taking away from the nutrients the new wood needs to grow. Which one is correct? Thanks in advance for your help with this.
My tree hydrangea is about 6 feet tall, one stem. Top has 4 small branches that blooms droop down because they are weak. Can I cut the stem off at about 4 feet and have it start over? I would leave several buds on down the stem. Thanks Carole

Incrediball blooms on new wood and is a more 'perennial' type shrub. You can cut the shrub to the ground over the winter and you'll be fine or just thin out the weak branches in the spring.
I cut my standard hydrangea trees way back last fall and they came back with a lot fewer branches and blooms so large that the stems are bent over. They look terrible. What should I do?
I just planted pink diamond for first time. Can i prune after 1st yr planted? What month is good; I live in canada. And how often to water? And for winter do I need to cover in burlap?
You explained very clearly how to prune my pee gee hydrangea, so now I feel more confident to prune it correctly. I also have three Hydrangea paniculata Vanilla Strawberry in a tree form. Am I correct to assume that I would prune those using the same principles? I just planted these three this spring, so I haven't seen how much new growth they produce each summer. The vanilla strawberry hydrangeas bloom on new wood, so you're fine to trim it either in fall or early spring, before they really start to grow. They're easy hydrangeas in that regard. Good luck!

How much would you charge to prune a tiny tree like this for spring that has only been in the ground one year as well as a small knockout rose tree that's been in the ground for 1 year?! I would hate for myself to do it wrong and have the tree's not produce flowers?!

Can I prune a standard hydrangea that was just planted this year (about 6 months ago) in the same manner as what's described in your video? There were a lot of blooms this year and there are a lot of new buds on the stems, I'm just now too sure how far back to prune. Absolutely! You can prune until the buds are 1/2" long and later if you don't mind losing some flowers.

Annabelle flowers on new wood. You can cut it back as much, or as little, as you like at the beginning of the season. Some people cut Annabelle back to the ground every fall.
