OUTSTANDING & INSTRUCTIVE! You are a gifted and natural teacher. I've been gardening for decades. There was never anything like this info available for beginning gardeners many years ago. I had to learn it slowly through the years of practice and error. Best thing was in-person extension service classes on pruning but they rarely covered the plants I wanted and often taught by book-smart academics with little real-life field experience. With UA-cam it's possible to find everything you might need to know and re-watch as many times as necessary. Love this channel and share it with many.

Yes, they left us manuscripts, books and other insightful records but imagine how it would be if we'd had digital photographs, videos and virtual interviews in the days of the great plant hunters, head gardeners, nursery people and garden designers🤔 Walking encyclopedias that were filled with amazing proficiency, skill and know how. When I visit the world's great gardens, I often have to ponder and remind myself that most of these plants in front of me were discovered and transported in the days before airplanes and refrigerated trucks, they were propagated and grown without mist systems and modern plant science, and the designers masterly arranged and combined them from written descriptions often not even black and white photographs.

We owe massive gratitude to our plant explorer ancestors who traveled the world at tremendous expense and discomfort in the days when it took MONTHS - not hours - to get there and to search some of the most inhospitable parts of our world. Their sacrifice and dedication to gather, identify, catalog, and transport plants for future propagation was truly admirable.

The toughest part of growing any shrub to a standard is picking the correct leader shoot to keep. The first and second year is the challenge. I would love to see a video showing random young hydrangea plants and an explanation of which branches to keep and how to make those first cuts and train it up straight. If you de-mystify the process, it would encourage many to try it. Excellent pruning instruction here.

My plant is fairly new but just after the winter passersby have pulled the dried heads off my paniculata (as dried flowers seem to be popular).
Will this affect my paniculata and how far back could I go in pruning because I would like a tall and full plant.

Passersby removing the old (dried) flower heads won't cause any issues with your plant. In fact, if you wanted to, you could cut them off and save them yourself (or even share them)!

Absolutely phenomenal! I just purchased this tree today because I was being fined by my homeowners association for not having landscaping in my front yard, and I was clueless on how to take care of it, until now. Thank you, Sir.
You made a good choice, one that we hope will give you years of pleasure. The important thing to bear in mind is that landscaping your front yard will add considerably to the value of your home. So as well as making your home environment more inviting and pleasant, the investment in time, effort and expense will be handsomely repaid, if and when your property goes on the market. Remember that the first thing prospective buyers see is the front of your home, so having a pretty front yard will make a big difference. Can we suggest that you check out some of the shrub Hydrangea paniculata forms too. Especially some of the smaller, more compact forms that we feature here on this website.

New subscriber! Great detailed video! I just planted one of these beauties a few weeks ago. Grabbed it for a heck of a deal on clearance. It has tons of twiggy growth as you mentioned and quite a few branches that need to be removed that are crossing. One of my favorite times in the garden is hacking back my grapevines to nearly nothing. This will be a blast!

You can prune these types of hydrangeas in either Autumn or Early Spring. David says he likes to do it in spring however, because that way he is able to enjoy at least the remains of the flowers, and the plants don't look so "chopped' back during the winter.
Sometimes, if you are on a windy site it makes sense to prune them lightly to reduce wind rock, but in summary they are so hardy and reliable they can be pruned at either time.

Wow 12 feet? I never knew they grow that high. Mine is around 7-8 feet tall. I’ve had it for 3 yrs now. I’m the same way I’ve never pruned mine either lol. I’m too afraid of killing it.

Thank you so much for all these wonderful videos about hydrangeas… I really appreciate them and David’s knowledge and enthusiasm! While I do generally understand the basics of pruning all the different types of hydrangeas, I do have a question about pruning a hydrangea tree. This past spring I purchased 3 Vanilla Strawberry trees to plant along my driveway. When I planted them in April they had small heads but with quite a few buds, over the summer they grew many long stems that created a 2-3 foot canopy that was covered in blooms! As the blooms became bigger the branches drooped, but the effect was still pleasant. Now that it’s late fall and the leaves have dropped off the VS trees I can now get a good look at their branches. For the most part all the new growth branches are thin a whippy which was the cause of the drooping blooms. My question is… next spring should I prune all these thin stems off and prune the plant back hard to the 2 year old wood (or maybe even the 3 year old wood)? This would leave 4 or 5 old stems that would be 4-6” in length… will this old old wood bud out and created thicker new branches for next summer? Thanks for any info… cheers!

It is a characteristic of this variety to have rather thin, whippy branches and a semi-pendulous habit, and there's not much you can do to alter this. Growing them a little "harder" i.e. making sure that they are not over fertilized (which includes the potential leaching of lawn fertilizer), and providing they are well established, cutting back on irrigation, often helps to make the growth a little sturdier. Also, sometimes we will give them a second trim (before the end of June), this induces new, shorter, bushier growth and smaller sized blooms.

It also sets the flowering date back and with us (in our cooler late summer nights)and we get better color too.

Specifically though, could you comment on pruning the branches of my VS trees back to the 2 or 3 year old wood… will the buds that form on this older (thicker) wood grow thicker/sturdier new stems next spring, which would help against drooping? Thank you for this wonderful video to show us exactly how to prune the tree form Hydrangeas. I have 2 of these for over 10 years and never prune back that hard hence I have smaller flowers as you had described in the video. Really wished I have found you earlier! Anyway, if I may ask is it too late for me to prune them back hard now? Thx
No it is not too late, pruning them now will set the flowering back a few weeks but it will induce nice healthy new shoots and bigger flowers. Since you haven't pruned them previously, I suggest (rather than pruning as hard as I've done in this video), that you take them back less severely, shortening back and thinning out the growth, with the aim of getting them to sprout new growth over say a three year period. Then eventually when they are more lush and vigorous and have plenty of new strong stems, you can employ this method. They are tough, hardy and remarkably resilient but for now, it might be better to take a gradual planned approach.

You are very welcome, and of course, it is fun to try growing your own, but it takes a while and also remember that many of the newer selections are patented, so it is illegal to propagate them! Perhaps, it might be worth having a word with some of your local garden centers, to see if some kind person can alert you when they are getting in their stock. The "early bird gets the worm" and all that!

Welcome to our channel and thank you for your question. Yes, you can remove the old flower heads - they are so hardy, it won't do the plant "a button" of harm! In fact, some people will remove the heads in late autumn and dry them. Here on the nursery and in my own garden, we like to leave them on the plants because while they are finished, they persist well and give us something to enjoy in the winter.... especially sticking up out of a snowy landscape.
Thank you very much for this excellent video! My husband and I purchased a strawberry vanilla hydrangea tree last fall. This is the first year that we have it from the spring on. We did not trim it at all. With that said, there is deadwood and weak branches on it at the present time. Should we do any trimming now? Since it is now July, do you recommend that we wait until after the flowers have finished blooming and have turned brown to trim it? Or is it best to wait for the spring now? We have massive blooms that are weighing some of the branches down especially after it rains. Thanks for your help.
Thank you for you nice comment and question. You can trim back any of the branches that weigh down to the ground or likely to get broken. And, because it is so hardy you can trim it back in autumn as the flowers discolor, but the my favorite time (as you've noted in the video) is in early spring and that's when you would carry out the main pruning. It is a characteristic of this selection to be pendulous, and droop over, several more recent selections have been bred to have thick, sturdy stems that keep the big heavy heads upright.

You can prune them anytime from late Autumn onwards, but my favorite time (like in this video) is early spring (before growth begins).

Yes, the same principle applies. However since Tardiva is a strong growing, vigorous selection, we would suggest you prune it a little less aggressively, by leaving the branches a little longer. The harder something is cut back, that stronger the resultant growth will be.

A storm is coming in our area with very strong winds. Our strawberry vanilla hydrangea tree has full panicle flowers on it now. Do you recommend somehow tying the branches together for support because of the weight of the blossoms? Is it better just to leave it alone and let the wind blow through it? I have ribbon that is strong that I could join together And tie it if necessary. Please let me know. Thank you.
If you are concerned about it, you could try erecting a temporary netting screen to act as a wind break or try tying in some of the branches temporarily to bamboo canes or thin stakes, but because plants tend to grow to depend upon supports, it is usually better to let the plants move and sway in the wind so that they become sturdier on their own.
Certainly that's what we do.
If there's any particularly big, heavy heads on what looks like vulnerable branches, you might also consider snipping them off and bringing them indoors to enjoy in an arrangement.

Hello. This is the second year that we have our vanilla strawberry hydrangea tree. Last year it looked beautiful and is starting off to look very promising with the new buds. The only concern is that in the middle of the trunk, there is a bud coming out like new wood. Could you please tell me if I should just snip that off and seal it? I was afraid to trim that off and not put a sealant on it so that it doesn’t get a disease. Please let me know what you think about this. Thank you very much for your help.
They sometimes, start sprouting from the trunk, and if you wish to maintain the tree form, it is important to remove these buds and shoots as they appear.
Just snip it off close to the trunk, it will not harm the tree and because the wound will quickly callus over, there's no need to apply sealants etc.

Most of the places will have already arranged for Miss Saori to be delivered when they are coming into flower (typically around or just after Mother's Day). So maybe you can get in quick and nab one, or ask them to see if they can get it for you😉.
I worry about borers here when we prune. Everything we prune winds up with a borer hole in, including when pruned in winter.
Understand, but this has not been an issue with us.
Since it is now end of May can I still do a little trimming of old dead and spindly parts from my hydrangea?
Absolutely, that will clean it up a bit and make it bushier. What I didn't mention in the video is that we do this all the time in the nursery....

In fact, as you will see in this video: ua-cam.com/video/1uJKg7RZ16M/v-deo.html we deliberately prune some of our crops of panicle hydrangeas to have them not only extra bushy.... but also, be in flower later in the autumn! The neat thing about this is that it spreads and extends the color period, and because the weather is cooler, and we get better pink and red coloring on some of the varieties too.
So, by all means, go ahead and do your pruning, and if you have more than one plant, now you know how you can experiment with getting more color over a longer period, and enhanced colors too!

Rabbits chewed on my panicle tree trunk i mean like the whole tree bark is gone...will the tree survive David?
Sorry to tell you, it doesn't sound good. If the whole cambium layer has been chewed away, the poor old plant will not be able to get water up to the leaves! If the damage is near the bottom, you could try mounding up extra soil around the stem (all over the damaged area), and then hope that the tree with sprout new roots above the damage and still be able to survive. it will look ridiculous but might be worth a try. You should also consider thinning out the head a bit to lessen the transpiration demand and maybe shade the tree a bit with some temporary shade material during hot sunny days. Time for critical "ER" care!
