Thank you for such a well rounded tutorial on pruning limelight. I’ve purchased two over the summer & can’t wait to prune in the spring for better stem support!
I've seen a beautiful limelight pruned like a small tree - maybe a 3-4 inch diameter trunk and about 7 or 8 feet high. It's in a waterfront park in Bay City, Michigan. I prune my limelight like you did, except cut at about 48 inches tall. The shrub sits in the far backyard, mostly shady, and has gorgeous blooms at about 7 to 8 feet high in late summer.
Thank you for this great video. I have a giant limelight that I stake every spring because it falls over. I prune it every year, but now I know I've been doing it incorrectly. Poor limelight 😢
Thanks for this video, was trying to decide between Limelight and Little Lime. I will go with Limelight now that you have shown how and when to properly prune it. Thank you.
Hello. I am so grateful for this video. I am in zone 8 Georgia. My limelight hydrangeas have just started growing green leaves. Can I still cut the old bark and still get blooms this season? I would greatly appreciate a response. Peace / Love.
Shrubs that are turned into tree-form are usually done so very early on in the plants life. You can't take a shrub that's already a shrub and just turn it into a tree, it will always fight you on that and it will be never ending pruning until you finally give up. That process has to start very early. Some plants actually have to be grafted onto a standard to achieve that look.
Make your own video! It’s great that she uses a measuring tape! When you have a grouping, it looks like all winter when you trim them all the same size! Some of us are that OCD and that’s the beautiful thing about gardening!
I live in zone 5, it starts leafing up in the spring and blooms from after mother's day until fall. Amazing plant, you get your money's worth. I trimmed mine into a little tree. It is gorgeous. Goes about 10 feet. Most people think it is a tree. I was just checking to see how to trim it up before it blooms, since I wind up doing it after it starts blooming--when it is just coming awake so I can see what is old and new branches and that is not what this woman is doing. How does she know what is old and what is new? I am mystified.
Hi! I have a Question regarding schooling. Did you go to school to learn this career? Do you encourage schooling or can someone learn how to be a floral designer on their own?
Hi Judy! Kelly did learn from others and you can read about her background here: www.teamflower.org/about-kelly/ If you’re interested in learning, I would recommend our Team Flower Workshop: www.teamflower.org/workshop/
Thank you for this clear and precise explanation on pruning
That was an excellent Video. Very straightforward and easy to understand. Thank you.

Yeah. she is quite fine isn't she.
So if you have little green leaves growing on your lime hydrangeas can you prune them back?
`i ACTUALLY WAS TRYIN TO GO TO RUSH LIMELIGHT BUT THEN FOUND MY NEW CCRUSH 😘
Can you explain the 2 different types of cutting? Woody and?
Hi! I was wondering if the same is true for a limelight hydrangea tree? Thank you so much!
Should I do this their first spring? My plant looks way smaller. Also, would you do the same method for Zinfin Doll?
What was your reasoning for 18"? Was it 1/3 of the general height ? Thanks for this helpful video!
You are beautiful!
Can you regrow the stems ?
spring being March not May ? is pruning a phantom hydrangea the same ? May being to late ? see many new leaves already ?
Just curious, how old is that Limelight?
how to trim them into a small tree when dormant? I usually cut mine when it starts leafing up.

Where is Boon?
Boone, North Carolina
I think you meant to say you would prefer bigger blooms and less of them but you said more blooms and less of them. LOL
Using a measuring tape lol. Just eyeball it. These plants don’t care. They grow like crazy so don’t worry about screwing anything up.

Awesome video! Do you know if the LimeLights are rebloomers? If so do you know about what time of the season to do it? Thank you!
