The fact that this is called the ballad of Jane doe when it's really a lament, and Noel's lament is actually a ballad, is super cool. The titles reflect what the songs *want* to be, not what they are. Jane doesn't have a ballad because she has no story. Noel doesn't have a lament, his is telling the story of Monique.

In a way, she can't have a lament because no one is mourning her. She has a ballad that is not really her ballad, her story. Her ballad belongs to every Jane/ Jon Doe. This is the story they all have, no sadness or anger, just a blank headstone for a faceless person.

Right afterwards she also says: 'When silence falls, does anyone care?' which seems to reference the saying "when a tree falls in the woods, does it make a sound" (ie. if something is not experienced, does it actually matter?).
You see it in her name too, and in the way she references John Doe at the end of the song.
I really like how the songwriter twisted common modern-day sayings and concepts just enough to make them feel foreign and otherworldly. They've also focused on evoking imagery that matches Jane's character. It makes the song feel 'bigger' in its subject matter than it would if we heard the same in more familiar language, which is particularly needed for this character.

    LYRICS (I think)
    Some might say
    We're released
    Pushing daisies, deceased
When we all know the worms must be fed
    Theres just one
    Lingering fear
    Oh my soul,
    Is it here?
Or is it rotting somewhere with my head?
    Oh my soul, my soul
    My soul, my soul
    (Ooo and Aaas)
Oh no soul and no name
    And no story
    What a shame
Cruel existence was only a sham
Oh St. Peter let me in
You must know where I've been
Won't you tell me at last
Who I am, who I am
Who I am, who I am
    (Oos and Aaas)
    And from the ground
    beneath my feet
I hear the anguish of the street
    (A choir never complete)
And like an old, forgotten tune
A song that no one knows
    forgot how it goes
    Just John and Me,
    Forever eternally,
    Jane Doe
    And I'm asking
    Why Lord
If this is how I die Lord
Why be legft with no family and no friends
    I've got no celebration
    just this consolation
Time eats all his children in the end
    (Aaas)
A melody floats through the air
    When silence falls,
    Does no one care?
    (Does anyone care?)
    Another sad forgotten tune
Another song that no one knows
    So thats how it goes
    Just John and me
    Forever eternally,
    Jane Doe
    And she's asking Why Lord
(Why oh why oh why oh why)
This is no way to die, Lord
    No one to sing,
    No one to sigh,
now that all is said and done
Isn't there anyone to tell me
    Who I Am? (Oooo)
    No singing songs of celebration
    Just a starry speculation
    Like John,
    I'll be eternally
    A forgotten name
    Some lost refrain
    Just Jane,
    Jane Doe
A melody floats through the air
When silence falls no do one care?
    Jane Doe

"I hear the anguish of the streets"is referring to how cut off heads remain conscious for 25-30 seconds. an experiment was formed a while ago where when peoples heads got cut off, a man asked the heads questions and they responded by blinking.
this means jane doe was conscious for HALF A MINUTE, hearing people screaming when they saw her head

Warning: a few spoilers, for those who haven't seen the show and/or listened to the album.
This one just makes me sad, man. This whole show does, really, but there are plenty of comedic and fun moments sprinkled throughout before you get to this part that make you laugh and forget you're watching a show about dead children. When you get to this song, all the comedy vanishes (for now, anyway), and the reality of the situation comes crashing in. She's dead. They're _all_ dead, and she's the worst off because she can't remember who she is/was. You can just feel her confusion and sorrow and, later on in the song, her rage (during the _"Why,_ Lord?" parts). It's this anguished demand for an explanation, one that you really want to answer but, at this point in the story, just can't. It's depressing and makes your heart go out to Jane, and I think _that's_ a testament to how well Emily Rohm did in this musical! :)

    • @KuroDokueki
      @KuroDokueki 7 місяців тому +3

For me, the only parts that really break my heart are Ballad of Jane Doe, and Talia. Because, on the flipside of your explanation. Talia is about a man who loves someone so much, he'd do anything for her. And knowing he's dead, and he can never hear her again, never talk to her. That all he has in the afterlife is whatever's on his cell phone. And he can't make good on all of his promises. The two songs utterly wrecked me the first time.

@@americaroleplayer It could be a reference to Kronos, but I'm not entirely sure, because technically Kronos didn't eat all his children, and also I don't think she would see it as a consolation if it was referencing Kronos as if all his children were eaten, they wouldn't have been freed. However, as Kronos had 6 children that were gods, and there were 6 students in the choir, it could make sense. If it were to be interpreted as Kronos, then it could also represent Jane as Zeus, the last one to arrive/be born and the one who wasn't eaten properly, (Zeus was swapped for a rock, and Jane was part doll and "escaped"). If this interpretation is to be believed (the Jane Zeus one) then it might be predicted that Jane frees the other 5 choir students at some point after the events of the musical, just as Zeus did. I can't believe I just typed that all up. Anyways, it might make sense it might not I don't really know.

“Time eats all his children in the end” alluding to Ancient Greek mythology where Kronos, king of the Titans, is cursed so that his children will one day overthrow him. His solution is to eat all of the newborn children he has with his wife Rhea. In the song Jane uses it to say that no one can escape death, Time takes us all in the end. But the missing part of the myth is that this is the story of the birth of Zeus; after all her other children were eaten, Rhea became fed up and swapped out newborn Zeus for a rock wrapped in swaddling clothes like a baby. She gives that rock to Kronos instead, and Zeus grows up to overthrow the Titans and his father. So Time doesn’t eat all his children in the end. This one line foreshadows the ending of the show, that the other students will die and pass on, but Jane will not be eaten. She gets a new life. Favorite line❤️

I would accept the gruesome idea of she must’ve landed on the tracks again unlike the others but the way she sings about her head kind of implies it’s still intact somewhere doesn’t it? So I don’t think her head was crushed I think she was fully decapitated but simply how would that occur from a derailed rollercoaster if the others were presumably killed by impact with the ground.

Can someone with a higher functioning brain tell me if what I'm hearing at the end is Dies Irae, because if by the 0.001% chance it isn't, I'm going to cry.
Please I'm literally hyperfixated on this musical and if it mixes with one of my auditory loves I'm going to overjoyed. Like genuinely I catch dies irae so easily, but it's not catching properly this time for some reason
    I'm referring to:
    "A mel-o-dy
    floats through the air
    when sil-ence falls
    does no one care?
    Jane
    Doe."
It's used so often in media, and I love it. Some examples are the "siren" esc call from Frozen 2, a background noise in the pink shape guys song from Squid Game, and even a scene in Star Wars I think. Once you hear it, you genuinely can't unhear it. It makes absolute sense for this musical too, as dies irae is a song used as a symbol for death.

I don't know much about this musical so I'm just spit balling but since she had no head we can assume she was decapitated while on the ride one way or another.
I find this frightening as, for anyone who doesn't know, when you're decapitated your brain still works and you're still awake till it shuts down like, twenty-ish Seconds later due to the lack of blood. This means that not only was she decapitated, she'd probably watched her head hit the ground before she officially died.
Of course, it's possible that her head was mangled upon decapitation which would've rendered the death almost instant so she wouldn't of had to deal with that. But in the situation she was *just* decapitated she'd of been awake for it.
This is not important to the story in any way as it appears she has no clue who she is. But imagine not only having to basically watch and feel yourself die, but also have no one not even yourself remember who you are.
Once again, I haven't watched the musical so I have no clue what I'm talking about. I just found this interesting and wanted to share my thoughts.

To me this song also symbolizes a young person who used to be a normal active teenager then later became ill and as their body gives out they beg why it had to be this way and how. The anger, the screams, the operatic highs and lows. But there are multiple takes on every song, all are correct it’s up to you

lyrics bc i cant find them here!
    [JANE]
    Some might say we're released
    Pushing daises, deceased
But we all know the worms must be fed

    There's just one lingering fear
Oh my soul, is it here?
Or is it rotting somewhere with my head?

    Oh my soul
    Oh my soul
    Oh my soul
    Oh my soul

Oh no soul, and no name
And no story, what a shame
Cruel existence was only a sham?

Oh Saint Peter, let me in!
You must know where I've been
Won't you tell me at last who I am?

    Who I am
    Who I am
    Who I am
    Who I am

And from the ground, beneath my feet
I hear the anguish of the street

    [CHOIR]
    A choir never complete

    [JANE]
And like an old forgotten tune
A song that no one knows...

    Forgot how it goes
    Just John and me
    Forever eternally, Jane Doe

    And I'm askin' why lord
If this is how I die, Lord
Why be left with no family
    and no friends?

    I've got no celebration
    just this consolation
    time eats all his children
    in the end

A melody floats through the air
When silence falls, does no one care?

    [CHOIR]
    Does anyone care?

    [JANE]
    Another sad, forgotten tune
Another song that no one knows
    So that's how it goes!
    Just John and me
    Forever eternally, Jane Doe

    [CHOIR]
    And she's asking "Why, Lord?"

    [JANE]
Why, oh why, oh why, oh why?

    [CHOIR]
"This is no way to die, Lord!"

    [JANE}
No one to sing, no one to sigh
Now that all is said and done
Isn't there anyone to tell me who I am?

    [CHOIR]
    No singing songs of celebration
    Just this speculation

    [JANE]
    Like John I'll be eternally
A forgotten name, some lost refrain
    Just "Jane"
    Jane..
    Doe

    [CHOIR]
A melody floats through the air
When silence falls, does no one care?
    Jane
    Doe
